New York Times bestselling author JoAnn Ross returns to Shelter Bay with a story of destiny, desire, danger, and a sea captain’s ancient curse that’s become local legend.
Someone to Watch Over Me
Independent, strong-willed Tess Lombardi has dedicated her life to fighting for justice. As a deputy district attorney, threats are merely part of the job. This time, with several high profile cases on the line, she reluctantly agrees to protection. Only to discover that Nate Breslin comes with his own risks. How can she trust a bodyguard who’s stalked her? And lies for a living?
Former Marine sniper Nate Breslin has managed, at least most days, to leave danger and death in his past. Nate has his own reasons for tracking Tess down, but when her life is threatened, this mission becomes personal and he’s willing to risk anything and everything to keep her safe.
As the danger escalates and her would-be killer closes in, Tess must learn to trust Nate. With her life. And her heart.
New York Times bestselling author JoAnn Ross has written over a hundred novels for a bunch of publishers. Two of her titles have been excerpted in Cosmo and her books have also been published by the Doubleday, Rhapsody, Literary Guild, and Mystery Guild book clubs.
A member of the Romance Writers of America's Honor Roll of best-selling authors, she's won several awards, including Romantic Times's Career Achievement Awards in both category and contemporary single title.
Currently writing a new Honeymoon Harbor series for HQN set on the Washington peninsula, that will launch in April, 2018, JoAnn lives with her husband (her high school sweetheart, who proposed at the sea wall where her Shelter Bay books are set), in the Pacific Northwest.
Sunset Point is a Shelter Bay novel that also hints at a new series, Orchid Island. In this story, we get to know more about Tess Lombardi, prosecuting attorney with several difficult cases keeping her busy and watchful, especially after she starts receiving scary phone calls, and a tire on her car is slashed. To make matters worse, the nightmares stemming from a childhood episode during which she was kidnapped, keep returning and tantalizing her with snippets of recall that don't make sense.
Also introduced is Nate Breslin, a Marine sniper now making his living as a best-selling writer of ghost stories. He's now living in a house overlooking the Oregon coast at Shelter Bay that was first owned by Tess's great-great grandfather, a man who died when his ship crashed into the rocks below where the house overlooks the sea. Nate is occasionally visited by that particular ghost, who becomes the conduit introducing Tess to Nate, who is convinced that he and she are destined to entwine their lives into one. She doesn't believe it, nor does she believe in ghosts--until the old salt visits her when she goes to Nate's place when things get nasty with her high-profile cases that involve a Russian gangster.
All looks like it's going the way of other romances with walks on the beach and hot sex until danger shows up in the guise of an assistant prosecuting attorney who comes to take Tess back to Portland for an emergency court appearance. When Nate insists on coming with her, things go from bad to worse. When she most needs help, will her ghostly great-great-grandfather save her when Nate can't? Read this delightful story peopled by wonderful characters, including that irascible ghost.
Nate and Tess are cool characters. They have been through a lot. I loved seeing some characters from previous Shelter Bay stories in here, and the action got pretty intense near the end. The addition of Captain Angus McGrath was great.
That being said, the character development didn't seem to go as deep as in other books in the series. The action and the twists and turns were great, as were the steamy scenes. Things kept you guessing up to the end. So that is why I called it a good story, but not great. See what you think. If you prefer action over character development, perhaps you will disagree.
Although I was feeling the danger was bit low key, the ending was a serious surprise. I must admit that I would have liked more of the captain, though. Nate is a sweetheart, yet still a powerful man of strong ethics. His focus on Tess was a bit of a surprise, as it was all but instantaneous. A wonderful story. I was glad that Mike found someone, but it sort of felt like an afterthought. That did need a little more depth.
Another wonderful book in the Virgin River series. When a young mother of two is abandoned in Virgin River, she finds help in the local minister and the community members. Determined to work hard to provide for herself and her children, the young mother takes a job picking apples at the local orchard. There she finds friends, warm relationships and much much more.
This is the story of Tess Lombardi and Nate Breslin. Tess is a driven DA in Portland while Nate , a former Marine sniper, who lives in Shelter Bay and writes novels. Tess is being threatened and needs to be out of Portland so she goes to stay with Nate. The book was a quick easy read.
I am done with this author. I used to love her books, I still love her older works. But she has lost her edge and everything feels like a Lifetime movie.
JoAnn Ross takes us back to Shelter Bay in this charming new novel. It wasn't her best Shelter Bay story (but then, nothing will beat Sax's), but it did provide a nice introduction to her upcoming series "Orchid Island." The romance did happen a bit quickly and some of the chronologic back story for Nate seemed off (it was even more striking when I read the first chapter of "Sun Kissed" which is included in the back of "Sunset Point"), but it was still a satisfying read.
This is the latest and maybe last in the Shelter Bay series, which I have loved. This one, not so much. It felt rushed and the main characters didn't seem to mesh. It seemed like they went from 0-100 in 0.25 seconds. One minute he was limping and bloody from accosting her on the street, the next, he was acting as her bodyguard and trying to browbeat her into marriage, at least that's how it felt for this reader. Disappointing compared to the author's previous books in this series.
Reminscent of Nora Roberts' romantic suspense, Tess, in the District Attorney's office, is under threat from a Russian mobster she put in prison. After a friend is injured, she is persuaded to leave town, in the company of Nate, to Sunset Beach. Nate, a former Marine, and now a fantasy/horror writer.
I loved this book with romance and some suspense. Ante has a resident ghost at his house who wants him to find Tess. Well worth reading especially if you like romance with some character depth.
My least favourite of the series, I just couldn't seem to connect with the characters. There were a few good bits but not as unputdownable as the others.
