Satellites are disappearing one by one. Not exploding, not dropping out of the sky, just disappearing. When the Hubble Space Telescope vanishes, reluctant hero Jake Corby is dispatched to figure out who or what is responsible. He's used to solving problems for the FBI, but hunting down missing satellites? That's a new one.
The mysterious force next cripples the International Space Station and destroys the only spacecraft that could rescue the astronauts. The race is on to avert the final death blow to the ISS and execute a risky plan to get the astronauts back home. Before it's too late.
This short prequel to Contact Us is filled with the quirky surprises and humor that Al Macy's readers have come to expect. The Antiterrorist is a standalone book, with no cliffhanger or "to be continued" at the end. It may be read before or after other books in the series.
Al Macy writes because he has stories to tell. In school he was the class clown and always the first volunteer for show and tell. His teachers would say “Al has a lot of imagination.” Then they'd roll their eyes.
But he put his storytelling on the back burner until he retired and wrote a blog about his efforts to improve his piano sight-reading. That's when his love of storytelling burbled up to the surface, along with quirky words like “burble.”
He had even more fun writing his second book, Drive, Ride, Repeat, but was bummed by non-fiction's need to stick to “the truth” (yucko). From then on it was fiction all the way, with a good dose of his science background burbling to the surface.
Macy's top priority is compelling storylines with satisfying plot twists, but he never neglects character development. No, wait … his top priority is quirkiness, then compelling storylines, then character development. No, wait …
Turns out Al Macy's fictional characters are just as funny as the man himself. Or really...turns out Al Macy's humor comes across in both his fiction and nonfiction writing. Either way this was good fun, sort of action comedy combo about a man who really, really hates terrorists, really, really loves his wife and really, really doesn't take himself seriously. Nice mindless way to pass an hour or so. Apparently part of a series, but works well as a stand alone too.
This is a short, but action-packed ride. The main character, Jake Corby, seems to bumble his way from mess to near disaster to resolution, while accumulating a variety of bodily injuries The bad guys have a James Bond villain weapon. Little time is dedicated to how it works, but Corby remains at the story at the centre, and you kind of fixate on him like watching a slow motion almost-train wreck. Macy does a very good job of orchestrating a disaster at the International Space Station and a rescue mission that will keep you on the edge of your seat (and yes, we are still reading a story about Jake Corby) and all of the parts of the tale really do hang together. Finally, put Jake in the Oval Office, and toss in the phrases “projectile vomiting” along with President Barrack Obama, and we’re done. I was inclined to give the book a three-stars-and-a-bit review, but for me, the deciding factor is whether or not I want to read the next book in the series. That was a “Yes” and Macy gets four stars for this one.
This is an entertaining short novella about a guy who tracks down terrorists; in this case the bad folks are using some kind of laser beam to shoot down satellites, including the unfortunate Hubble space telescope, and the ISS, which of course has astronauts and cosmonauts aboard.
I did wonder why there didn't seem to be any other agents available, especially as our guy is injured halfway. But maybe someone scruffy enough to pass without a closer inspection was better than a guy who looked like a government agent or a SEAL. We get a view of some desperate manouvres in space.
The author made an e-ARC available. This is an unbiased review.
I love the humor of Jake Corby, and the intelligence which authorized Macy has given him. I always love a little klutzy behavior and humor in a guy who always comes out on top on spite of it. It makes me want to cheer him on. Certainly this is an easy and a great read!
This is an amusing book with a lead character who beats the baddies but "no heroics".
My only criticism about the book is that it moves from high tension to the next high tension very quickly. Probably it could have expanded Jake's part and skipped the final rescue event.
I enjoyed this book. It has a little more foul language than I'm comfortable with. I love that place when Jake threw up all over the President. It's a short story but I know you will like it.
Wow! What an exciting short story! This “book” starts off with Jake getting taken prisoner, beaten up and then getting rescued by Seal Teams! What a typical start for a Jake Corby Novel. The action seems to continue non-stop. I won’t reveal the plot, but Jake has to save the Astronauts bacon while they are in the Orbital Space Lab! Now, figure that one out.
The writing is really good. The story flows really well and I like the sarcastic humor coming from Jake Corby. I can almost see myself saying or at least thinking some of the same stuff he says or thinks. Sometimes it would be better if Jake did just think his sarcastic thoughts instead of blurting the right out. It tends to make the bad guys pretty mad at him.
Now, you’ve probably noticed that I put the word “book” in quotes in my first paragraph. That’s because I was very surprised at how short this “book” really was. I’m not a speed ready by any measure, but I finished the entire “book” in about two hours. Yeah, I was constantly reading with no interruptions, but I don’t ever finish a book that quickly. This book is just that short; good, but short. So, if you’re looking for a quick, but exciting read, this is it!
Disclaimer: I received The Antiterrorist at no charge in exchange for an honest review, although Mr. Macy did send me an email that stated the review was not necessary. Because of the release from my review duty I postponed reading The Antiterrorist until just a few hours ago.
I now think that Mr. Macy had enough confidence in his writing to say the review was not required fully knowing I would not be able to resist writing one (he is obviously psychic, as he does not know me). I never give details in a book review so don't look for what the book is about in this one. What I will say though is that there was only one thing I did not like about this book-I wish it had been longer, say 600 pages or so, lol. The story is fast-paced, attention-grabbing and virtually error free from the very beginning and never loses it's power. While the genre is thriller/suspense there are tid-bits of humor interspersed that make a good book great for me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
I thought this was a great, fast paced, quick read. The main character, Jake Corby is witty, charming with a kind of James Bond-ish personality. He is a consultant working for the government to investigate a terrorist group that might be responsible for satellites disappearing. Jake gets into some major trouble while outside their compound.
The satellites that are missing literally disappear and it is imperative to find out who is responsible, how they are executing the disappearances and where they are located.
If that is not enough excitement, the same group is responsible for a space station accident and it is a race against time to save the astronauts.
Jake Corby has real magnetism as a protagonist! I thoroughly enjoyed The Antiterrorist. If you want to find out more about Al Macy check out https://www.facebook.com/AlMacyAuthor
First read of this author. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Is it high-brow literature? No. Is it just good fun story-telling? Yes. I'd recommend this for anyone looking for a light, dry wit, fun read. But I must add, the final space-based situation had my heart pounding. Which, frankly, surprised me. I'll be looking for his other offerings.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Well, I loved, loved, loved this book about a space mishap and the rescue mission. It's very suspenseful!
Great story. Hero who didn't know when to keep his mouth shut; who got the job done even if it meant personal sacrifice. Loved Jake and the development of all the characters
This is a great, quick read. Action and adventure with a bit of humour thrown in. I'm looking forward to more Jake Corby stories and more of Al's works.
