Everything happens for a reason... Four people. Four very different lives. Four tales interwoven. Meet Kenzie en Shareed, the High Clan Chief's daughter who is sent south to fulfill a treaty by marriage only to marry the wrong man; Kadrean Authier, the Crown Prince who must come to terms with his new bride, even if he doesn't much like the idea; Garron D'Arbonne, a noble Lord who has been commanded to marry a cool and aloof princess he doesn't love; and Vivianne Chappelle, a young and ambitious woman who is in love with her abusive father's manservant and must find a way to avoid having her entire future decided for her. Fate and wills collide in this Shakespearian-style romantic comedy about good intentions and their unintentional consequences.
From obtaining a BA in Drama at the University of Windsor to becoming an entrepreneur in video game production and later, publishing, Justine Alley Dowsett's unswerving ambition has always led her to pursue her dreams. Today she lives in Windsor, Ontario and is the proud owner of Mirror World Publishing. When not focusing on growing her business, she enjoys theatre, roleplaying with friends, and developing new ideas to write about.
Unintended was a well-written romantic comedy with an unusual twist. It lives up to it's Shakespearean inspiration and could easily become a modern day classic. I was impressed by the author's imagination, but even more so, because it was a believable fantasy world.
This book was entertaining, unpredictable and held my interest from start to finish. The story also touches on a few serious and sensitive topics in a mindful way that doesn't distract from the lightheartedness of the main story. I would highly recommend Unintended to anyone who appreciates a classic love story.
4.25 Stars/5 As soon as I heard this book was Shakespearean inspired, I knew I HAD to read it, as I have been a Shakespeare junkie since middle school. I was so anxious to read it in fact that I had to pre-order it as soon as it went live on the Mirror World Publishing website! I wasn't disappointed overall. The complicated, interwoven plots, characters with big personalities and big opinions, and fast paced, witty dialogue abounded. The characters can be polarizing- I found with each I either loved them or hated them, no middle ground for most of them, but that is good, books are supposed to make you feel things, and even the ones I "hated" were in a good way, I still wanted to see where their stories took them. Definitely no dull moments in this book, and for a 440 pg+ novel that's an accomplishment the dynamic duo of Dowsett and Damodred should be extremely proud of!
As a life long equestrian, some of the horse riding parts were hard for me to read through, but I don't think casual horse appreciating readers will be bothered by it in the slightest. I wish there was a little more about the horses, as Kenzie, arguably the character we hear the most from in this multi-POV story is from a group of nomadic, Celtic inspired people, horses should be the centre of her world, and being cooped up in a city/castle should be straining on her. But that is just my little nit pick, and shouldn't be dissuasive anyone from picking up this book.
The dialogue is really where this novel shines, and shines brightly. The witty, sass filled, sarcastic back and forth between Kenzie and Prince Kadrean are heavenly- exactly the kind of thing I love in a book. Out of all the men in this book, Kadrean stole my heart, right from the get go. Sure he's a jerk in the beginning, but I found him to be a lovable jerk, and I totally got why he was being the way he was, his situation wasn't all roses and bons bons either. Garron was lovely, but a little too vanilla for me to book crush on. Great, stand up guy, who has a way with romantic words, but I like a man with sass in his back pocket that he isn't afraid to use.
The endings for the various characters were handled well, although not everyone got the end I wanted for them as a reader, but that is okay, and true of the Shakespearean style that inspired this novel. There were a few head scratching moments for me at the end, in terms of how certain characters got to the place they were emotionally, in the time that they did, but nothing large enough to wreck the overall feel of the book for me.
At 440+ pages, you get it all in Unintended- Love, Misunderstandings, Comedy, Sorrow, Plots and Intrigues sure to satisfy readers at every turn. I blazed through this book in three nights of reading, because once I got into it, I HAD to know how everything turned out. I may now go back and read it at a sensible pace, and enjoy it more slowly. Unintended is a great offering from Justine Alley Dowsett and Murandy Damodred, their best yet in my opinion, and is perfect to curl up reading with a cozy blanket and your hot beverage of choice as we head into fall.
So when the review request came through for this one, I almost passed it up. I'd been swamped... and I have a backlog list a mile long and... I was leaving for a vacation that was NOT book friendly (I will read anywhere- except Disney World)... and I didn't really need to add any more books to my review pile... BUT one detail caught my attention: "Shakespeare-syle romantic comedy." That my friends, is like dangling a candy bar in front of a chocoholic. For those who don't already know this, I am a huge fan of Shakespeare. Seriously, I fell in love with The Bard when I was around nine and I've read the plays multiple times; I try to see every production I can, I have plays memorized (and not the usual ones either), I took the course on Shakespeare in college as an undergrad and then took it again as a grad student and squeed like a teen at a 1D concert when I had to spend ninety bucks to purchase The Complete Works because I finally had them all (yes books are my pokemon- gotta catch 'em all- don't judge me). After seeing that one detail, I had to review this one. So I clicked yes on the form and sent it in knowing I had to bust my butt and reshuffle my pile and stress myself out over deadlines...
But I am so glad I did...
From the blurb, I expected something along the lines of A Mid-Summer Night's Dream but I got so much more than that! Sure there are some similarities of Mid-Summer in there but I also found some elements from Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, and even a little Romeo and Juliet. Holy cow! It was like a Shakespearean smorgasbord! There was some witty banter between characters which I simply adore. There was strong female characters, another big plus for me. There was some confusion and misdirection that kept me on my toes and kept me tied to the computer screen until I finished reading the book in it's entirety. It was cleverly written and lived up to the Shakespearean hype, earning a 5-Star rating.
As you can tell from the plays I mentioned, the story isn't just straight rom-com. There are elements of intrigue and deception and much more hidden in this story. There were multiple times when I would ponder the possible outcomes--how it would all play out, who was responsible for X or Y, or if there was going to be a HEA or how they would make it happen--and as soon as I thought I figured it out, something else would happen and I would scrap my theories and start again. I found the fantasy label a little misleading as well, at first. That more than anything made me expect something along the lines of Mid-Summer but the story read more like a historical fiction--castles, period fashion, nobility and fealty--you get the picture. The presence of a few modern phrases and concepts (and mindsets) creeping into the text and the fact that one character had premonitions of future events are what made me accept the fantasy label in the end.
The story was incredible. It is told in third person, but it does switch perspectives amongst the four main characters. Each section is marked with the initials of the character so there is no confusion as to who is the central character in the scene. The story itself is a mash up of so many stories and yet it was uniquely it's own. If they hadn't boasted the tale as Shakespeare-like, I don't know that I would have immediately connected it to his works. But with that little nugget of information, I looked for elements and compared them to plays that I know and love and I was pleased to see the story surpass my expectations. The authors did an amazing job creating a story that flowed well, kept me interested, and lacked predictability.
Of course, my review of any book wouldn't be complete without the discussion on characterization. Anyone familiar with my reviews knows that one of the critical selling points for me is well developed characters. Well, this book definitely has that. I'll start with the women. Kenzie is strong and strong willed but she has a sense of duty that tempers her actions but not always her mouth. She is in a strange land where everything from her gender to her status causes society to pile on very different expectations than her homeland. Vivianne is the victim of abuse but she still has a quiet strength that carries her through the most difficult situations. She doesn't have the ambitions of her sister, Victory, who has her sights set on the crown prince, instead she just wants to be with the man she loves and escape her cruel family. Now on to the men. Garron is kinda like a bystander that gets sucked in without knowing the whys and hows. His part in the story kind of reminds me of Shrek--he sets off to do one thing and it all goes sideways. He has a sense of duty and propriety but he also is compassionate and that leads to other emotions he doesn't exactly know how to handle at first but he eventually figures it out. Kadrean is probably one of the most complex characters in the bunch. The first impression of him isn't so great but as the story goes on more and more facets of his character are revealed. Then you get to the point where it's like, "Dammit, I didn't want to like him!" but you do because you just can't help it. There are other great characters sprinkled in that you either love or hate with good reason--Cyril, Niklaus, Creston, Victory, Vance, etc.--each one is expertly crafted and brings life to the story.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, it was a great read and even though it had me spending way too much time staring at my monitor during my reading binge, I regret nothing!
I was given a complimentary copy of this book from the authors through ‘Voracious Readers Only’ and had no idea the spelling was about to be caught up in!
I found the setting, story telling, and overall plot twists of this story to be refreshing and was completely sucked into this story by the first page.
Sadly it took me two days to complete this masterpiece as I only had the second half of the day that I started it on left to read 😍
When the story opens with the one of the main characters mistakenly marrying the wrong man, you know you’re in for some fun.
Unintended is billed as a romantic Shakespearian comedy. Now, I’ll freely admit that besides Romeo and Juliet, which was required reading in high school, I’ve never read a single thing written by Shakespeare (or whoever it was that was actually writing his work). So I can really comment on the Shakespearian aspect of Unintended. What I can say is, this book is a ton of fun.
The main plot revolves around a Clan Chief’s daughter (Kenzie), who is sent to marry a prince (Kadrean), so that there can be a treaty between their two peoples. However, as I said above, Kenzie mistakenly marries the wrong man as soon as she arrives. This accident kicks off a series of blunders which spreads like wild fire between a growing cast of characters.
The tone of the book is a mixed bag. At times, it is playful and humorous, but then would take a dark turn and produce some serious consequences for the cast.
I did find myself rolling my eyes a few times at the more romantic portions, but I can’t fault the book for this, it is clearly advertised as being a romantic comedy, so the blame is on me.
Besides the mushy stuff however, I really enjoyed the book. The characters were likeable, and the story had enough twists and turns to stump even Theseus. Word around town is that there is a quasi-sequel in the works. When it sees the light of day, I’ll have to check it out.
I picked up this book unsure what to exactly expect however I was not disappointed. This book is full of twisting plots with loveable.. and hateable (in a good way ) characters. The dialogue is witty and amusing. I love the pacing of all the stories and how it all came together in the end. Its a fun read that I had trouble putting down as I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. I found this book to be one of few that didn't bother me when the point of view changed with the chapter. It seems like the authors knew exactly when to change it up.
There were a few times that i felt myself pulled out this make believe world with details which bothered me somewhat. It would cause me to pause my reading to make sure i had read it correctly. For a world with castles and queens and kings, i was not expecting to have them have 2 way glass in the prisons for example. These details weren't numerous but enough to make fall out of the spell of the story.
I also had some issues getting behind the decisions of some of the characters at points and did groan at a few points but on a whole it was really well put together. I loved the complicated plots.
Dowsett and Damodred hooked me in from the moment their character, Kenzie en Shareed marries the wrong guy. What a faux pas! From there, the dominoes fall one after the other as the cast of Unintended try to right wrongs in the most hysterical and sometimes disturbing ways. I really enjoyed the fantasy world of Ismera the pair of imaginative authors created, which gave me a nostalgic feeling of Old World Scotland and Britain, coupled with their use of modern day language to bridge the gap of the past and present.
The twists and turns in this romantic comedy end with a few surprises, and leaves the reader feeling satisfied and ready for the next romp in the Ismeran world! Bravo, ladies!
Not your average romantic comedy, it tips its hat at the classic - both 18th century and Shakespearean. It begins with a classic mistaken identity that leads to all sorts of knockoff difficulties. A jaunty pace, is set and the four stories are cleverly interwoven. All set in a well drawn fantasy world. This was refreshingly different.
I liked the description so I decided to read it. I was kind of confused in which time the book was set or, as it might be a fantasy/ another place alltogether, how the two countries could be so different from each other. I got the impression that Kenzies country wasn't that advanced. Also I did not like the characters development. Kenzie did not like the Ismeran people but more and more she becomes like one of them. She is highly set on her people's values, yet she sleeps with the prince and thus betrays her husband. Also Anne lost her husband and the next moment she is in love with the prince. I also did not like how there were special sections for people's thoughts on the pages. The book is already written in the personal point of view, but then there are some sections in italics with the characters thoughts. I do think there is potential in the story and there was a lot of drama happening. I just thought it was too much and some story lines were not written to the end.

This book follows the life of a young woman and the people around her as she finds herself in a new land with a new husband, charged with keeping the peace between two nations. The story was interesting from the beginning with entertaining twists and turns, and the characters were varied enough to be realistic. My only complaint is that there wasn't much information given on the setting of the story - I wanted to know more about the surrounding world and why a treaty was just now being made between the two peoples. This didn't detract much from the story, but a little more background information would have been enjoyable, Overall, I recommend this book for those who are interested in easy-going low-fantasy romance. I received a complimentary copy of this work through Voracious Readers Only in exchange for my honest opinion.
This is the second book that Justine has sent me for free to read and review and I don't have a bad word to say, she is vast becoming a favourite author of mine. I loved this story as it has everything, romance, mystery, comical moments and moments when you cry. I'm such a romantic at heart and was really pleased that Kenzie got to be with Garron, that Kadrean found love with Anne. I was unable to put the book down, especially when the royal family was attacked, I couldn't help my heart breaking for the prince. Not only did he have to find his mum when he was little but he had to go through that again and then see his fiance be murdered. He makes a great king though, despite all the tragedy.
This book was better than I expected! I recieved a complimentary copy to review and honestly it was so good that I was forced to stop reading my other book and finish this one. Unintended takes you on a journey with the characters and does remind me of Shakespearean comedies where mistaken beliefs and missed timings leave the characters chasing each other and confused. The characters are well developed and feel very rounded, not one-dimensional, and the plot twists throughout the book keep the readers on their toes. I would definitely recommend to anyone wanting an easy-read, romantic novel which has a Shakespearean flavour to it.
I received this book free via the author through Voracious Readers Only. I requested the copy of it because the premise sounded interesting. The premise was interesting and toward the end of the novel I was finally able to like and relate to the characters enough to say the book was ok. The authors did not adequately develop the characters or story lines and often left me saying, "Wait. What?" The characters were naive and impulsive, and the story was abrupt and oftentimes implausible --despite it being a fictional world.
*I received a free copy of this book from the author via voracious readers only in exchange for an honest review* This was a tricky one for me to review because I started off really loving it, I was invested in the characters there were some twists and I could feel the romance building however it got to about halfway and all of that was just thrown out of the window. It became unbelievable and stiff. I no longer liked any of the characters and I just wanted it to end. The premise was great, I really wanted to like it...
Unintended read really well. Even though it had its problems, I couldn't wait to find out the ending. My problem with this book was some character choices didn't align with how the characters were portrayed. I can't go into details without spoilers, but some choices just seemed to be put in there to make the plot more interesting, not because the character would make those choices normally. Other than that, it was an interesting read. If you want to read a romance, this is an interesting one! I received a free copy of this book from VRO in exchange for an honest review.
What can I say I loved this book, it reminded me of outlander but without the time travelling. I loved that there was a twist right at the beginning that made me want to know what happened next. I must say I still wish she ended up with the prince and that Creston didn’t die but I am still happy with the way it ended.
Overall it was a funny, exciting book that I would happily recommend.

A twisted love story that keeps you on your toes. Never judge a book by its cover, or necessarily the first meeting. Sometimes you need to get in the middle to really understand a person. Also politics are messy and should not involve love. Fun story that's heartbreaking and love filled without even realizing who is going to end up with whom. Not a light read, but not a heavy one either. Happy endings all around, for the most part, and can't wait to read more from this author.
This book takes you through so many twist and turns. It keeps you on your toes, guessing what’s going to happen next. The story line came with so many surprises and turn of events that I did not know what was going to happen next. It is a well written book, and definitely caches the readers attention
I Enjoyed everything about this book there was nothing I didn't like about the book.I like the setting, the writing style, the plot, the plot twists and the characters in the book were amazing.I would reread this again.
I received a complimentary copy from the author via Voracious Readers Only.
I found this book a fun, fast paced and often witty read. The characters grew as the plot developed through twists and turns. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting a lighthearted, enjoyable read.
This book was well written. Multiple POVs isn't really my thing, so I spent most of the story confused. I wasn't a huge fan of this story. I did find myself scanning it just to get the main points and get through it. I read through some of the other reviews and I may have missed the point of the story which probably contributed to my lack of praise for this book. Overall, it was a fairly easy read. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through Voracious Readers Only.
I absolutely loved how Unintended was full of twists and turns and surprises. It was very well written and a pleasure to read. I loved the complicated and interwoven romance in this book which was very well developed and did not disappoint. The book as well as having lots of lighthearted moments, also touched some serious issues - both of which balanced each other out perfectly.
I admit, I did get annoyed with some characters at certain points in the book, but in the end I couldn't help but forgive them because it was the circumstances which shaped them a certain way and forced them into certain situations.
Overall, it was comedy, romance, action, lovable characters and so much unexpected all wrapped in one fat book of Unintended. Definitely recommend to any romance, action or Shakespeare lovers out there.
