The 7th Jackal

Rate this book
In 1993 at a top secret facility conducting telekinetic research, something dangerous escaped. Now the government wants it back. Jim Thorpe Pennsylvania is a quiet little tourist town where nothing exciting ever really happens. All of that changes when a young woman is found brutally murdered and a local boy vanishes without a trace. Fearful for his safety and led by Keenan Braddock, a clairvoyant haunted by visions of an elusive killer, a group of teenagers set out to find their missing friend and confront an unstoppable enemy. Now, years later, that same group has returned home for the funeral of friend. Together they recount the terrifying story of their youth and a hidden secret buried deep within the past. In a time when young heroes make a stand and face off against the worst of childhood fears, J.L. Davis (Jeff Davis) constructs a haunting thriller where forces converge in a battle of good verses evil and the clock isn't just ticking. It's about to run out.

I was not sure what to expect because I have never read this author's work before, but I liked it very much. The story contains dark government secrets, murder and a young group of kids who put it all on the line to save their friend. The charactures were unique and the fast pace kept me interested. J. Scot Bennett did an excelent job with the cadence and all of the voices.

This is an exciting book, packed with suspense, action, and drama. The characters were realistic, the plot could be with a lot of imagination, and but the ending seemed to lack that finite finish that defines a completed story. It seemed to happen quickly, not affording me a chance to realize what all had led up to it. The kids seemed genuine, but the dialogue seemed a bit too mature at times, and their attempted rescue of their friend seemed more than they could have been capable of, much less having the nerve to actually do it. It is surprising that a “secret” facility of this magnitude could exist that close to a town without someone getting curious about it. A few loose ends. The writing left something to be desired. I wouild recommend a good editor to eliminate misspelled words, missing letters, and poor grammar.

Kept me on my toes

Once I figured out who everyone was it was good and scary. Loved how they all related at the end. Good read.

This was a 2.5 for me but goodreads doesn't have that option. The book was interesting and he plot was pretty good. I wouldn't tell people not to read this. This is a story I think would be really interesting as a show or movie. Davis created some really interesting characters. My biggest problem was the dialogue felt like it never quite fit the tone of the scene. I also wish this book was solely written from Keenan's perspective like the beginning and end. I think the author did really well with those. I think it would have been cool to leave out part 2 and have that be a seperate book just about the Agency. Part 2 just felt a little out of place and didn't have much lead in. I feel like it would have been cooler to be completely in the dark about Blackheart.

A well written supernatural thriller about a group of teenagers who take on a government created terror (that is linked to one of the boys past) in order to save their friend. There are many twists and turns in this suspenseful read and the excellent narration brought the authors words to life. Descriptive scenes, short chapters, a captivating storyline and strong characters that you soon became attached to, all helped build a suspense novel that keeps you on the edge of your seat. So creepy! The 7th Jackal is a supernatural thriller involving a group of kids, hoping to save their friend from "the dark man" but the dark man isn't the only bad guy in this one, Mr. Grimm is a disgusting, vile excuse for a human. I like that I didn’t figure everything out right away. There are times when the author gets a little too detailed about how things work in the “agency” but in all this is a solid 3-3.5 star book for me. The narrator does a decent job, I listened at a 1.5 speed, my normal speed to listen to an audio book is 1.25.

I really enjoyed this one.J Scott Bennett was the perfect narrator. This is a story of childhood monsters.Whether they're real or imagined you have to deal with them.In 1993 a group of kids must battle a monster. There has been a murder and an abduction.Jim Thorpe Pa is usually boring. This is before the town is remade as a tourist destination. When thy return for a friends funeral they review what happened so long ago and catch us up.
