Moose, by Jack Ballard, 2014. Very good book by naturalist Ballard in the Falcon Pocket Guide series. I learned a lot about moose, like the fact that there are 4 subspecies of moose: - Alaska moose (Alaska and northwestern Canada) is the largest moose. It can way up to 1,800 lbs. - Northwestern moose (much of interior Canada and parts of Minnesota, North Dakota, Michigan, and Wisconsin) is the second largest subspecies. - Eastern moose (eastern Canada and northeastern US) and - Shiras moose (northern Rockies in the US) round out the list.
There is reason for concern, especially for the northwestern moose. Minnesota’s population declined from nearly 9,000 moose in 2006 to less than 3,000 in 2013. The 2016 DNR moose population survey, conducted in January, puts the 2016 population at just over 4,020 moose. Disease, including some associated with global warming, is the main cause of the decline.
Great photos and informative narrative – Ballard did a good job.
