I’m sorry to say this but this was just a waste of time for me, even if the story was short. I couldn’t really find anything that worked or drew me in, the writing was so detached and, well, strange and the interactions awkward at best.
The worst part is that had this plot been in better hands it might actually had been something. It had very interesting aspects like the witness protection program, the main characters being neighbors getting of on the wrong foot, the assault and the former navy SEAL. All of this however just became blah in this book, mainly because of the writing being so stilted, repetitive and lacking so much depth, which also translated to the characterization. It being that there was none. The characters had no depth or personality to them and every interaction between the two was like how a kid thinks grownups in love talks to each other. And when it wasn’t that it was over the top sexual attraction and descriptions. It was very strange to say the least and made it seriously difficult seeing any romance or connection that supposedly developed between them.
The only time that I felt that the story actually tried for some depth was when they talked about what happened or their past. This sadly, like everything else just felt off. In Edge’s case it came of as a big self-boosting spiel of how masculine and awesome he was, and in Calli’s case it was very bipolar. One second she had to keep it to herself and stay away to protect Edge, the next she jumped on the chance of hanging with the guy no issue whatsoever. Her constantly hinting at her past and not revealing anything also came across as seeking pity or attention. In both characters cases this was very off putting.
This book’s only saving grace is the fact that I had read way worse books, and the fact that it was short, I guess. All in all I give it two stars.
