Booker #5

No Más

Rate this book
No more deception.

Brought to the Caribbean island of Dominican Republic on the premise that he could finally close the chapter on the darkest moment of his life—and rid the world of a cold-blooded killer—Booker T. Adams instantly finds a far different scene. Set against the backdrop of a city consumed by the rising fear of terrorism and a brutal drug lord, a woman -- seemingly with two lives and even two faces -- uses her hypnotic charm to get what she wants, sending Booker on a mission to rescue a teenage boy held hostage.

No more lies.

Befriended by a fired cop and a homeless kid with nothing to live for, Booker struggles to understand fact versus fiction, while staving off wild boars, snakes, terrorist traps, and a past that has haunted him for almost thirty years. Is he dealing with people believing their own hypocrisy, or have they simply perfected the art of betrayal and treachery?

No more killing.

The all-powerful rule with brute force, killing women and children like they’re swatting flies. It’s a savagery that Booker can’t comprehend, let alone defeat. With the smell of death stuffed down his throat, the man with everything to lose puts everything on the line—because he can take…

No more.

Fans of Alex Cross and Jack Reacher will enjoy this private investigator thriller novel full of suspense, action, and crime.

Q&A with author John W. Mefford:

Q: What made you want to write a private investigator series?

JWM: I've always had strong desire to write private investigator thriller novels. When I was young, I was drawn to books, TV shows, and movies that featured a private detective with a little bit of attitude, a rebellious streak so to speak, a determined, gritty soul who used every gift they possessed to solve the case, but for a higher purpose than just paying the rent. I enjoy private detective novels that know how to create and build suspense...and then deliver a mind-splitting thriller with plenty of crackling action.

Q: What can we expect out of the BOOKER Private Investigator Thriller Series of Crime and Suspense?

JWM: To put it simply -- a roller-coaster ride brimming with action and suspense. The characters are tested to their limits, Booker in particular, which adds all sorts of interesting layers to his evolution. There's always a bit of humor mixed in, along with a healthy dose of pulse-pounding thrills. Born in South Dallas, Booker is driven to do anything in his power to protect the mixed bag of people living in his city. But even with the best intentions, Booker is dragged into seedy situations, slammed into obstacles that seem insurmountable. The man's got substance, though, which make his thriller moments even more powerful.

Q: How many books are you planning to publish in the BOOKER Private Investigator Thriller Series of Crime and Suspense?

JWM: Six and a half. Sort of. Six full BOOKER private investigator thriller novels are planned for release in 2015 and I recently published a novella (considered Volume 2.5). After that, there could be more. I can envision at least two more stories.

Q: What's the recommended order to read the BOOKER Series?

JWM: The novels can be read as stand-alone, but I'd recommend reading them in the following order:
BOOKER – Streets of Mayhem (Volume 1)
BOOKER – Tap That (Volume 2)
BOILERMAKER – A Lt. Jack Daniels / Booker Mystery (Volume 2.

Booker, # 5

“No more deception, no more lies, no more killing, no more”

This fifth installment brings Booker T. Adams to the Caribbean Island of Dominican Republic on a mission to rescue a teenage boy held hostage. Easy job for Booker....not so fast...Surprises await at every corner and his wild escapade sends him straight into the hands of the cartel.

Know your Spanish there are multiple comments said in that language with little translation or none at all but you can catch the drift somewhat as the story moves along. As all the books in this series, the pacing is fast, suspenseful and action is packed with many twists to keep us riveting till the very end. We learn a little more about Booker and his past and we get to meet his long lost dad and his murderous ex. What a mix. What a complete mayhem. Booker teams up with a very resourceful young man that knows the rope and is eager to be part of the recue. Of course things turn sour and bullets fly and people get hurt....but all ends well and the boy comes home safe and sound....awe.

Although this book is part of a series it can be read on its own but I find it nice to know the past characters and their relationship, it makes for a more complete experience.

“No Más ”, is a captivating read I enjoyed passing time with.... till next time....”Dead Heat” book #6.

I have been following this series from the beginning and I have become quite enamoured with Booker T. Adams. This title can be read as a stand-alone, but it would be in your best interest to read the series in order which will provide one with a better insight into each of the characters.

In this installment Booker finds himself in the Dominican Republic as he was hired to find his ex-girlfriend who was wanted on several counts of murder in Dallas, Texas. New evidence had come to light which indicated that she was residing on the Caribbean island. While there he found himself embroiled in another case which in true Booker fashion will have readers on the edge of their seats. There are kidnappers and members of the drug cartel to contend with.
We are introduced to some new and interesting characters. They were a great addition to the story. My favourite was the homeless teenager Bolt. This is not his real name but when you read the story you will understand why he calls himself Bolt. Some interesting facts in regards to Booker’s past came to light within this story which revealed more of his human side. These events enabled him to let go of the bitterness he has been harbouring in his heart in regards to the absence of his from his life while growing up.

Like all the books in the series, No Mas was fast paced, suspenseful and action packed. It was filled with twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very end. The story is riveting and will hold your interest from start to finish.

My only problem with this story was that there were some comments which were made in Spanish. Having not being a student of the language, this made it a bit challenging for me to read. The comments were translated, but I had to reread certain parts so that I did not get lost as at times the translation did not immediately follow the comments made.

If you enjoy, mysteries/thrillers that will get your blood pumping and your heart racing at every page turn then you need to read this series. You definitely will not regret it.

Booker , an ex cop now investigator has receives a tip that his ex is living somewhere in the Caribbean islands. Setting off to find the murderess and bring her back to the U.S. to face the charges he is on his way to put another case to rest, but as always it’s not so easy. Things start to unravel, picking up and taking her back isn’t as easy as it seems. A teenage boy being held hostage takes precedence over anything else. One case has seemingly shifted into two, and danger is around every corner keeping him on the move.

No one can be trusted along the way, nothing seems to be as it really is and Booker finds himself with drug cartels on his heels. With his past collided with him and nothing seems to be as it should be, he’s not sure what end is up anymore . One thing he does know though, is he can’t stand by and let more killing take place. Time is running out for Booker, and with death close enough he can smell it he needs to figure out what it all means, and what to do about it before a chance to stop it is taken away. Will he be able to find the kidnapped boy? Will he capture his murderous ex and bring her back to face her crimes? You’ll have to read to find out!

No Mas is fast paced and action packed! I loved this just as the other in the series, though they are stand alone I can’t help but be glad I read others. Tad draw back is there’s no translation for the Spanish used in the book, but that doesn’t ruin it at all. With dark twists and turns, this was a great suspenseful read that had me turning page after page to find out what happens next. Can’t wait for the next one and to see where Booker is off to next!

If you enjoy some suspenseful crime books full of adventures around every page turn, this is for your!

An awesome series. Can't wait to read the next book. I am totally addicted to Booker T. Adams PI

The story takes place in the Dominican Republic, and there is some Spanish used while I don't understand a word of Spanish, and was totally clueless about the Spanish used in this story, but it was explained what was being said enough to not let it interfere with the story.

While the books in this series might work out alright reading as a stand alone I would highly recommend reading them in order to get into the characters.

Another incredible adventure for Booker T. Adams, PI. Reading these stories is like diving into an episode of an on-going serial. Each one advances the development and interaction of the main characters, while this time, you are introduced to some new and exciting characters who will become permanent players as additional books are written. This time, Booker is hired by the wealthy parents of the bridegroom-to-be blown up in Book 1 so he can track down their deceased son’s bride-to-be, Britney [now classified internationally as a murder fugitive and who also happened to be the former girlfriend of Booker], and deliver her to justice in the U.S. Booker receives intelligence that she has been located in the Dominican Republic and travels to D.R. to bring her back. Of course, as with all this author’s stories, nothing is as simple as it first appears. In fact, as you continue to read, the beginning task becomes more and more complicated, putting you, the reader, on a roller coaster ride without brakes. Full of excitement and even dread at points, you experience with Booker a totally different type of adventure from prior books since it takes place outside of the U.S., and he must team up with brand new, previously unknown characters. Booker, ever resourceful and normally relatively self-sufficient, gratefully accepts all the help available and manages to do what he was hired to do, while at the same time becoming involved in deception, kidnaping, theft, assault, murder, drug trafficking, and, at times, complete mayhem. For fans of this series, this story also contains several huge surprises that affect Booker’s life forever. Of course, while complete on its own, it does help to be able to know the characters and their relationships already. And, as always, there is a hook at the very end to take you right into the next story. You are never disappointed when you read this very talented author’s stories. Although I received an advance copy, this review is totally my own since I really enjoyed the book.

"I haven't been a child in a long time, Mr.Booker."
Book 5 in the Booker series, and the PI is hired by the millionaire parents of their son, murdered by his fiance on their wedding day, to find her, Britney, the woman with whom he, too, had been in love. Acting on a tip, Booker goes to the Dominican Republic. A school teacher, respected in the area, looks just like the woman he is seeking but goes by the name of Ana Sofia and is living with a former baseball star. Knowing nothing about why Booker is there, Ortez - yes, that one - begs Booker to find his 14 years old son, Esterban, kidnapped just 15 days before. Now with a dual mission, Booker goes into action with, amongst others, Valdez, a recently sacked cop, Bolt, a street kid who'd tried to steal his bag, and an unexpected addition, Sean, a CIA contractor, taking on the drug cartels.

Although better from having read the previous book, No Mas works well as a stand alone. Author, John Mefford, writes convincingly and very visually. The book is action packed but also gives good characterization and even touched of humour. As alway, an excellent and thrilling read. Recommended.

Booker heads to the Dominican Republic for this next instalment in his story, there is a reference to previous books, in particular there is the return of Booker's girlfriend who turned out to be a multiple murderer. But although there are these references, this book still works as a standalone.
When he is hired to look for his murderous ex in the Caribbean Booker finds himself thrown into some very difficult situations, where lives are at stake and he must put his own life on the line to protect innocents.
This series has featured great stories with lots of excitement and many brilliantly written characters and this book is no exception.
I was fortunate enough to receive an advance copy of this book, but this honest review was written voluntarily.

Booker sure knows how to find himself in treaty situations. This time he is in the Dominican Republic trying to find his ex-fiance, Britney but ends up with a lot more going on than just finding her. He has a run-in with a drug cartel, a man who claims to be his father, and a young teenager who believes he’s a man. There was so much action in the book that it keeps you on your toes. I also thought this was the end for Booker for all the trouble he kept getting into. There were new characters introduced in this book and I really enjoyed the character, Bolt. He’s 14 living life on the streets but was a key player in helping Booker. Great read, a whole lot of action, twist and turns, and another home run for the author.

Booker travels to the Dominican Republic. His mission is to find his ex-girlfriend, who is wanted for murder, and bring her back to the US. Nothing in Bookers life is ever easy. If it was there wouldn’t be a good story to read. Booker makes friends with a teenage orphan and this lends itself to some great comic relief. There are a lot of twists and turns along the way. Several times I said to myself, “I didn’t see that coming!”. This is the best Booker novel so far!

Booker is hired by a family to go after Britney, his ex-girlfriend. This takes Booker to another country where he doesn't speak the language so well. He runs into a surprise helper, but this could be a bad thing in Booker's line of work. Whom can he trust in a country that he doesn't know? If you like action this book is for you. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Another great action/suspense thriller featuring P.I. Booker Adams. This time he heads to the Dominican Republic in hopes of finding his ex, Britney, in order to bring her to trial for murder. While there, he finds himself with interesting allies when he takes on a high profile kidnapping case. Full of suspense and surprises, this novel kept me hanging on every word. Highly recommended.

Por favor, quirro mas!
OK, I know less Spanish than Booker which made it just as challenging to understand the situations he finds himself in during this present dangerous assignment. That added to the elements of suspense and danger.
Adrenaline filled! (Spanish comments are translated for both Booker and the reader.)
While this book works well as a stand alone, I recommend reading the entire series. In this novel Booker is in search of a former lover, who happens to be a psychopathic killer. He met her in book one at the destruction of her wedding with her wealthy fiance hanging off the side of a famous church tower.
(Doesn't that pique your interest?
What or who Booker finds this time will surprise you.

John W Mefford is known for his fast paced, dangerous thrillers.
The Booker series will not disappoint. It is not my usual genre but I am hooked, devouring his novels like chocolate.

In earlier books we see not only Booker's professional prowess but also his personal, human side with his friends and his tender love for his six year old daughter. Being out of the U.S. that is not possible, yet Mefford manages to round out his character again. I love the street smart, manipulative, older than his years Bolt. I am not sure who does the better job of protecting the other this time.

I am not blind to the book's faults. Esteban's heroic actions at the end were weak and somewhat disappointing. Where did he come from?
Did El Jefe play a larger role in his kidnapping?
The action scene was amazing but the details left me with questions.

Parts of the dialogue I enjoyed were the references to well known tv shows and movies:

"I was half expecting to see a 1969 orange Dodge Charger fishtail into the alley..."

"I hate snakes..."

"...if all of this wasn't the greatest ruse since The Sting..."

Mefford has a wonderful way with descriptive dialogue.
Former cop Valdez makes a wise connection:
In the future, if you're around I will always need my sidearm.

Booker watching Sean check his cell phone early in their acquaintance:
Got somewhere to be? A camel to hunt down, a country to save?

"Dissolving the chip on my shoulder had helped me open my eyes and my heart."

Do not hesitate to take on this series. You will be glad you do.
It is an emotional rollercoaster with heart pounding suspense and a warm feeling of friendship and family.

I did receive this book in exchange for an honest review.
I read the first book to expand my eclectic reading tastes and I was hooked.

Before I dive into my thoughts, this book can be read as a standalone but I HIGHLY recommend starting from the beginning. Mefford's series is full of excitement that will make you want to keep on reading - if you love crime/excitement/thriller TV shows, you'll love these books even more!

Booker is tough. He's not someone I would personally want on my tail if I were a criminal. His distraught past makes him tough but I love the soft side we get to see when it comes to Booker and his daughter. Nothing more precious than seeing how a father loves his child!!

Heading to South America, this book contains some cross language of Spanish and English. Luckily it is all translated for those of us who dropped out of Spanish in college but I did have to go back and re-read a few parts to make sure I knew exactly what was going on. The series picked up a couple of new characters with whom I quickly fell in love with for the way they interacted and the dynamics they added to the story.

I adored this book....literally, adored it. The story is awesome! What is better than reading about a guy who is searching for a killer who just so happens to be his ex-girlfriend. I feel like this book really adds a new layer to Booker - one that we'll see more of in books to come!

I received this book to review through Beck Valley Books Book Tours, all the opinions above are 100% my own.

Booker: No Mas doesn’t hesitate with the action, thrill, and suspense.

The book starts right off with action. I had to re-read it a few times just to make sure I was following along! I thought Booker was dreaming or something, but no such luck. He was living it!

I am a romantic at heart so I was really hoping we could jump in right where we left off, but apparently, Booker received a phone call that put my wants on hold… and of course sends him on a new case that leads to another case.

As with the other books in this series, there is more than one crime to figure out and as usual, I can never figure them out until the end. Usually right before Booker himself figures them out!

I don’t want to give off too much information and spoil anything because this really is a book that you should read. Just know that Booker’s past collides with his present.

Although this can be read as a stand alone, you are definitely going to want to start from the beginning of the series. This is one of those series that you don’t want to miss anything and because his past is ever present in this book, knowing the who’s, the what’s, the where’s, the why’s, and the how’s will definitely make you feel better!

Booker is at it again - yet another unusual case - this time he's hooked up with his crazy ex-girlfriend Britney. It takes him to South America where she actually hooks him into looking for her now-boyfriend's son. Booker ends up feeling driven (like Booker does in most of his cases) to find the boy, and with the help of some new players. We get to see a new side of Booker when he interacts with his daughter, and we get a some spice with Spanish. I love the verve in this new addition to the series. It adds new dimensions to the whole series, but is easily read as a standalone book.

The new characters add some great elements to the story. Bolt is definitely a great addition, and the teenage boy's finagling of English and Spanish, add more to the humor that is usually just under the surface with Booker. Characters from Booker's past prove to Booker and us as readers that they are trickier than even Booker can distinguish. Britney is really a manipulative psychotic murdering beauty.
In the end, Booker's character is more fully developed in this tome, and the story is richer for it. If you can tell from my review, the ride is pumped up, attention-driving, and exciting.

Booker gets a lead on ex-girlfriend Britney, who is a murdering psycho, and heads to South America to find her. When he does, she hires him to find her current boyfriend’s son who has been kidnapped. Booker can’t tell if she is playing him, or has really turned over a new leaf. Nevertheless, he feels driven to find the boy. With the help of a couple of unlikely allies, Booker must take on the leader of the local cartel, who he suspects has the boy.

Booker always gets unusual cases, and this one doesn’t disappoint. It’s a testament to how sinister Britney is, when Booker can’t tell if she is acting or not. I loved the character of Bolt. It was so amusing all of the conversations getting the American lingo mixed up. Again, Booker shows a bit of a softer side, with his concern for Bolt and the kidnapped boy. I’m also glad his past is brought to the forefront to find some closure for him.

I have read and reviewed all of John Mefford's novels and they have never failed to grab my attention and keep that attention until the very end. I have read most of them in one sitting becuse I just could not stop reading-I had to know what happened next. No Mas is no exception to this.

This is one fast paced novel-filled to the brim with unexpected happenings. I particularly loved the character who Booker nicknamed "Bolt"--you will understand this nickname totally when you read what this young boy who has lived on the streets by himself most of his life is capable of, and he won't let anyone forget it!!

Read below and you will get a feeling of what you will be reading-if I say anymore I will give it all away!! Because this is a series and references are made to prior books it will help if you read all the novels in order-but not totally necessary.

Booker is sent to the Dominican Republic to find Britney Love, now Ana Sofia, and bring her back to the United States to be tried for multiple murders she committed. Upon his arrival to the DR, not only is Booker alone in a foreign country with no leads but there is also a language barrier.

Plot twists from new allies and foes to multiple dead ends and traps, this book deals with the strong ties of family that keeps one grounded and motivated to get the job done thoroughly and safely.

This was my first book from Mefford, and I love the unexpected turns that this book took me on in regards to the tasks Booker has taken on and being loyal to the friends he has met along the way.

The Booker Series just keeps on getting better and better! As with all of the other Booker books, I didn't want to put this one down once I started it. This book, No Mas, takes us to South America and we meet Bolt. He was a character that I loved! I enjoyed how they kept getting the American Lingo mixed up!

Booker is my kind of Hero, Tough but definitely still human. I will admit that I didn't understand not one word of the Spanish that was spoken, but you know what, that's okay because this book was still absolutely fantastic! 4 STARS!!
