Ah, the everyday bullshit that comes with being a low-level Hydra goon...

description

Apparently, getting your ass kicked by Nick Fury on a weekly basis isn't the worst thing that can happen to you. Nope, the tedious day to day minutiae of life is what wears a man like Hank Johnson down.
description
This isn't something that you need to read, it's just a super cute one-shot about a shlubby Hydra Agent and his ridiculous life as a henchman and a family man.

Attending Hydra funerals with the wife?
Poor Gerry.
Hail Hydra!
Ooooh, I'll bet there's an opening in sci-tech now!

description
Little League games against the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s kids, getting flack from his wife because they can't afford a nanny, and sitting through boring school fundraisers with his boss and her husband.

description

Basically, Hank does the same things we do but with a Hail Hydra! flair to it. And while it's not side-splittingly hilarious, it's funny enough to be an entertaining issue.

description

My only complaint is whothefuck is Hank and wherethefuck is Bob?

Oh well...

Hank Johnson is poor schmoe working for HYDRA. This is what he's done when he's not HYDRA-ing.

This is some funny shit, a few days in the life of less than successful HYDRA agent. His wife nags him about getting a job at AIM. His kids go to the Baron Strucker Academy. He gets sexually harassed by Madame Hydra. This is just a sampling of what befalls Hank Johnson.

The art and tone is very reminiscent of Matt Fraction's Hawkeye. If you ever wondered what HYDRA agents did during their down time, you'll enjoy this. 4.5 out of 5 stars, for what it is.

Nick Fury breaks into a Hydra facility, knocking out two guards before continuing his mission. But we linger on one of the guards and then cut to him out of uniform sat at his kitchen table nursing his bruised noggin and looking miserable. This is Hank Johnson, Agent of Hydra!

I haven’t read many of them but I’m calling it: this one-shot comic is the best Secret Wars tie-in! Seinfeld/Curb Your Enthusiasm writer David Mandel gives us a funny look into the everyday life of an ordinary Marvel supervillain goon. Besides the usual stuff every married familyman deals with like juggling kids and worrying about money, Hank’s also got to deal with getting beaten up by the Avengers and fend off Madame Hydra’s inappropriate workplace advances!

It’s essentially a Marvelised extension of that scene in Austin Powers about the Dr Evil henchman (but not as tragic) drawn in a style similar to David Aja’s Hawkeye by Michael Walsh. And it works really well – I loved it! Those scenes where all the Hydra guards line up and yell “HAIL HYDRA!” were the funniest as it’s like their version of school assembly, and there's Hank and his buddy talking about their boring weekend plans in between chants! Full marks to Michael Walsh for realising Mandel’s hilarious script so perfectly with his wonderful artwork.

I loved the fleshed-out supervillain community Hank lives in. The high school is called Wolfgang Von Strucker Elementary, the different factions have rivalries (“AIM-holes!”) whose kids play against each other in little league, and Baron Zemo hosts a school fundraiser! MODOK steals all the scenes he’s in – such a natural comedic character. I even loved the wonderful Hydra wreath at the funeral!

I’d ask for more as I really liked Hank and was rooting for him the whole time, but I wonder if this issue’s one-shot self-inclusive format didn’t make this work all the better. Either way it’s an outstanding comic that takes a wry yet refreshing and highly enjoyable look at the less glamorous side of the Marvel Universe.

Meet Hank Johnson. He's just a normal guy with normal problems. He's got a family that adores him.

Hank Johnson Agent of Hydra is a funny look into the life of a Hydra Agent. Let me tell you it's not as glamorous as it looks. Despite putting his life on the line against superheroes daily, Hank can't afford a nanny. His wife gives him a hard time and his kids...well they're just kids. Plus Hank seems to get knocked out by Nick Fury often.

A short comic depicting the day-to-day life of Hank Johnson, an agent of Hydra. Poor guy just wants to help his organization take over the world, but he can't afford a nanny, his boss may be sexually harassing him, and he keeps getting hit by Nick Fury. Why won't anyone give the poor guy a break?
This is one of the best things Marvel has gotten out in recent years, I love it.

This is the most utterly stupid, unnecessary, unfunny, senseless comic that I have read in a long time.

Waste of time and money, avoid at all costs.

It was good. Funny sometimes. And, I liked what they did with Steranko's material. Made me wanna go back and re-read it again for the millionth time. I like the series, and I'll continue reading it, hoping it gets better for me, and for Hank.
The only thing that I didn't like is that it was supposed to be BOB. Agent of Hydra. Who the hell is Hank? I'd gladly kill Hank and rename the title or something. So Marvel, please, do yourself a favor and bring Bob the title he deserves.

This was a fun, short read. It was not the funniest thing I have read but it was a great 15 minute diversion at the end of the day that I really enjoyed.
