Levon Cade #2.5

Levon's Ride

Rate this book
They could steal any car, anywhere, anytime. But they should never have stolen Levon’s Ride.

Levon Cade returns in this relentless novella of retribution.

Levon and his daughter Merry are on the run. When their SUV is taken off a mall parking lot, it’s up to Levon to find it. The car means nothing to him but the million dollars in cash and uncut diamonds that are hidden in it mean freedom for Levon and his little girl. He uses his skills and courage to uncover a widespread network of thieves and invite the wrath of a local gang.

More of the remorseless violence and high-speed action that readers have come to expect from Chuck Dixon.
Includes five illustrations by legendary comic book artist and illustrator Butch Guice.

Charles "Chuck" Dixon is an American comic book writer, perhaps best-known for long runs on Batman titles in the 1990s.

His earliest comics work was writing Evangeline first for Comico Comics in 1984 (then later for First Comics, who published the on-going series), on which he worked with his then-wife, the artist Judith Hunt. His big break came one year later, when editor Larry Hama hired him to write back-up stories for Marvel Comics' The Savage Sword of Conan.

In 1986, he began working for Eclipse Comics, writing Airboy with artist Tim Truman. Continuing to write for both Marvel and (mainly) Eclipse on these titles, as well as launching Strike! with artist Tom Lyle in August 1987 and Valkyrie with artist Paul Gulacy in October 1987, he began work on Carl Potts' Alien Legion series for Marvel's Epic Comics imprint, under editor Archie Goodwin. He also produced a three-issue adaptation of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Hobbit for Eclipse with artist David Wenzel between 1989 and 1990, and began writing Marc Spector: Moon Knight in June 1989.

His Punisher OGN Kingdom Gone (August, 1990) led to him working on the monthly The Punisher War Journal (and later, more monthly and occasional Punisher titles), and also brought him to the attention of DC Comics editor Denny O'Neil, who asked him to produce a Robin mini-series. The mini proved popular enough to spawn two sequels - The Joker's Wild (1991) and Cry of the Huntress (1992) - which led to both an ongoing monthly series (which Dixon wrote for 100 issues before leaving to work with CrossGen Comics), and to Dixon working on Detective Comics from #644-738 through the major Batman stories KnightFall & KnightsEnd (for which he helped create the key character of Bane), DC One Million , Contagion , Legacy , Cataclysm and No Man's Land . Much of his run was illustrated by Graham Nolan.

He was DC's most prolific Batman-writer in the mid-1990s (rivalled perhaps in history by Bill Finger and Dennis O'Neil) - in addition to writing Detective Comics he pioneered the individual series for Robin , Nightwing (which he wrote for 70 issues, and returned to briefly with 2005's #101) and Batgirl , as well as creating the team and book Birds of Prey .

While writing multiple Punisher and Batman comics (and October 1994's Punisher/Batman crossover), he also found time to launch Team 7 for Jim Lee's WildStorm/Image and Prophet for Rob Liefeld's Extreme Studios. He also wrote many issues of Catwoman and Green Arrow , regularly having about seven titles out each and every month between the years 1993 and 1998.

In March, 2002, Dixon turned his attention to CrossGen's output, salthough he co-wrote with Scott Beatty the origin of Barbara Gordon's Batgirl in 2003's Batgirl: Year One. For CrossGen he took over some of the comics of the out-going Mark Waid, taking over Sigil from #21, and Crux with #13. He launched Way of the Rat in June 2002, Brath (March '03), The Silken Ghost (June '03) and the pirate comic El Cazador (Oct '03), as well as editing Robert Rodi's non-Sigilverse The Crossovers. He also wrote the Ruse spin-off Archard's Agents one-shots in January and November '03 and April '04, the last released shortly before CrossGen's complete collapse forced the cancellation of all of its comics, before which Dixon wrote a single issue of Sojourn (May '04). Dixon's Way of the Rat #24, Brath #14 and El Cazador #6 were among the last comics released from the then-bankrupt publisher.

On June 10, 2008, Dixon announced on his forum that he was no longer "employed by DC Comics in any capacity."

DNF. This short story (49 pages, that isn’t a novel) had FIVE specific instances of eating within ten pages. Johnny Rockets, a Pan-Asian Buffet, Chili’s, room service in a motel, MORE talk of room service in the motel, and then Wendy’s. So maybe it’s six instances of eating in ten pages. Fuck out of here.

Levon’s Lunch was not worth $14.99.

Not as grimy as the previous novels, and Cade's daughter gets more character development.

If your any kind of action/thriller fan then these 3 books should be in your library.

This review will cover all three of the current books. I read them all in the space of two days, they were that good so, I thought I would combine them.

The series stars with Levon's Trade.

Levon is struggling to leave his previous life behind and be a normal citizen and loving father, something he'd been unable to do during his life in counter-terrorism. There are forces at work, both internal and external, that want to make sure that doesn't happen. They see him as the cause of misery and are willing to use any means to make sure that he can't cause anymore.

Levon is working as a security guard for a construction company. We learn almost from the opening pages that Levon is not a man you want to threaten as a few unfortunate thugs find out the hard way.

Levon is unexpectedly approached to help find a missing girl. It's a life he's left behind and wastes no time making that fact clear but as happens Levon's past comes back to haunt him and he learns that a costly legal battle is coming.

Levon has no options left. To save the single most important thing in his life he will have to revive the skills that made him a legend.

The hunt turns to the drug trade as often happens in cases like this and Levon's not one to back down when he's on the hunt but he may regret the trees he shakes this time, if he lives to have any regrets that is.

I was sucked in and couldn't put this book down. There is plenty of action with some great characters. I'm not sure what more I can say but to say that I bought the next two as soon as I finished this book. I had to know what was going to happen.

The second book in the series is Levon's Night.

Levon's in hiding. Fearing retribution for his actions to find a missing girl he grabbed everything that was important to him and decided to start a new life with a new name and a new job.

It seem that no matter how far or how hard you try to hide bad things seem to find you. This time Levon isn't the target, not at first that is. There is a hunt for a stolen treasure worth millions of dollars and with that kind of money there those out there that will do anything to find it especially when a team of killers is hired to locate the treasure. The horrific means that these animals will go to for information has law enforcement across the globe looking for them.

Each location they've visited is littered with blood and bodies and as they track down one lead after another the body count mounts, women, children, nothing matter except the treasure. Their hunt brings them to Levon's remote hiding spot. The small community is about to be visited by these harbingers of death. They soon realize that their intel failed to alert them to a deadly threat. It's by chance that Levon is missed in the initial assault and while the hunters know he's out there, they have no idea that the man they missed isn't some hick but a force like they've never faced before. Missing Levon and once again putting threatening all that he loves ensures that Levon will hunt the hunters. His goal? Kill them all.

The first book was great. This one was awesome. The brutality of the bad guys had my blood boiling. You can't help being engrossed in the story and urging Levon on. You will want these animals to pay and pay dearly for what they've done.

The third book is a short story and is meant as a filler as we wait for the next full release but that doesn't make it any less of a worthy read.

Levon's on the road again. Looking to put as much distance between himself and the carnage he left behind in the frozen north the last thing he's expecting is car thieves.

They take the wrong car or more importantly they steal a car that has something in it that Levon is not willing to leave behind.

There is a prayer that could be appropriate in this case, "Forgive them Lord, for they know not what they do." but that would imply mercy but in Levon's world mercy is a rare gift and he's not if the gift giving mood.

What this lacks in length makes up for in full unabashed action and destruction. What irritated me more than anything is that I now have to wait for more.

Levon’s Ride, the third installment in the Levon Cade series, picks up where the action and intensity of the first book left off. Having enjoyed Levon’s Trade immensely, I was eager to see how Chuck Dixon would maintain the fast pace, skillful writing, and punchy storytelling that first captivated me. This book did not disappoint.

In this story Levon Cade and his daughter, Merry, find themselves on the run from dangerous enemies. Their troubles escalate when their SUV is stolen from a mall parking lot. While the vehicle itself holds no sentimental value, the million dollars in cash and uncut diamonds hidden inside are critical to their escape and future freedom. Levon must track down the thieves and recover the stolen car, knowing that failure will leave them vulnerable to the ruthless criminal forces hunting them. As Levon relentlessly pursues the stolen SUV, he faces brutal confrontations with mercenaries and thieves. In the end, Levon manages to recover the stolen fortune through his cunning and combat skills, outwitting his adversaries and securing the future for him and Merry. The resolution comes with a mix of violence and strategy, leaving Levon and his daughter free to disappear into the shadows once more, though the lingering threat of danger still looms.

One of the standout qualities of this series is Dixon’s ability to develop rich, memorable characters with minimal words. Levon Cade himself remains a complex and compelling protagonist, his motivations clear and relatable without needing excessive explanation. It reminds me of a Nigerian movie I watched years ago where it was clear the director didn’t understand timelapse—unnecessary lengthening of scenes detracted from the experience. Dixon does the opposite here: his writing is efficient and powerful, proving that if you’re skilled enough, you don’t need many words to tell a captivating story.

Laffertz’s nuggets of wisdom, which I missed in the second book, thankfully make a return. His sharp lines not only bring a gritty realism to the narrative but also provide deeper reflections on human nature. I’m intrigued by Gunny. I hope someday some of his stories will get told.

The fast-paced plot, driven by Levon’s unrelenting pursuit of justice for himself and others, keeps the reader hooked from start to finish, reminding me why I enjoyed the first book so much.

Chuck Dixon – Levon Cade Bk 3 – Levon’s Ride – Reviewed 3/5/22 – Read 3/1/22

Their car was stolen while they were at the mall, what’s inside is more important than the car!!

Being on the run doesn’t mean that Levon can’t take his daughter to the mall. But when they were done, they found that their SUV had been stolen. Of course, the car was just a vehicle; it was what he had hidden inside that meant life or death for the two of them; the million dollars in cash and uncut diamonds!

Now Levon sets about to get it back. Surprising him, he found a local gang network that had inadvertently chosen the wrong car to heist; now they are in Levon’s sights, and he won’t quit till he has everything back.

Join Levon as he works his way up the chain to recover his property…

What did I like? We all know by now that the Levon Cade series is one high-velocity read, and this one will not disappoint you! When you are fighting for the survival and protection of your daughter, Levon will always step up his game and do what is necessary!

What will you like? Incredible action, emotional, gangsters, and local thugs are just a few of the types that Levon faces this time. Wow, watch out for some double-time action as he fights for their survival. Don’t miss this action-packed next adventure in the Levon Cade series with Chuck Dixon’s latest, “Levon’s Ride,” which is available NOW!!!

What next

I am loving this series. Poor Levon can't catch a break. He gets into tough spots and gets himself out too. He can't simply just watch a movie with his without something happening. He is just trying to find a safe place for him and his daughter to lay low, and be together, but the universe and fate will always call on a hero when it needs intervention. Can't wait until next book.

This third Levon's picks up shortly after Night and takes you on a hyperfocued Ride as Levon continues to deal with whatever criminal element obstacles life throws in his way towards his desired Merry destination.

This had an Elmore Leonard Raylan vibe about the way Dixon described Levon's investigations and bending of the rules. Of this, I approve.

Gunny Leffertz' sayings make a welcome return too.

An entertaining story along the lines of a Jack Reacher type character.

In this case, Levon and his daughter are on the run from the bad guys. While eating dinner one evening, someone steals his car. All of his money and personal belongings are in the vehicle.

Levon decides to track them down and deal with them each.

While on the run to relocate after the events of the last book, Levon's car is stolen. The money he had secreted away, his daughter's backpack, his shotgun... all go missing. But you don't mess with Levon and get away with it.

Slight, but enjoyable novella about what happens when you steal Levon Cade's car. This is series reminds me of Jack Reacher with a kid. But Levon pulls no punches and Dixon doesn't skimp on the violence.

Shot a dog page 31

Ok. I gave this series a go. But no more. Books 1 & 3 dogs are killed. Book 2, kids are killed.
I can not recommend this series .
Lots of needless violence to pets and innocents.
Too dark for my tastes.

The Ride Is Slowing Down

Levon Cade series started strong but seems to be straining and running short of both high caliber action and writing. This book is more of a slog through the swamp than a fresh jolt at the amusement park.

This is just one of my favorite books by Chuck Dixon.

One or the things about Levon. I can feel his situation, is his closeness to how his daughter's feelings affect him. Now on to this next book.

I love Chuck Dixon's Levon Cade.

When his car gets stolen it's just a matter of waiting to see the bad guys get taken down Cade style. The car thieves are just the tip of the iceberg of an international crime ring and as expected as bad as they are, Cade is badder.
To balance the over the top macho action is the relationship Cade has with his daughter. He's a tender father that doesn't quite know how to handle a fragile girl but he does his best and it will be interesting to see where this relationship goes in the future. Will she become another "hit girl"? Or will she recede from the action as her father immerses himself into it.

Dixon has a streamlined writing style. This could easily be made into a movie.

I'm ready for the next installment!

A shorter story, Levon heads out from his failed attempt at hiding out in the sticks in the Northeast, and gets his car stolen while eating Wendy's with his daughter Merry. Its kind of a criminal/survival procedural as he tracks the car down through the gang of thieves and runs into a very interesting and distinct group of crooks with an unusual scheme for money making. Poor Merry gets the worst of it, trying to be brave at 12 with her dad basically John Wicking his way through enemies to get their stuff back and keep her safe.

Whose Ride Is It, Anyway

Levon's car is stolen. He doesn't care about the car but what's in it. A group of black youths go around stealing cars for tow companies who they have a business deal with. Levon goes to find the car but what he left in the car is already gone. A big fan of Levon Cade! You're always in for an exciting ride with Chuck Dixon!

Invigorating short story, well done.

Great pace, well written, action packed, straight to the heart. I really enjoy reading this series, Levon is a no nonsense, driven hero, a problem solver. He makes no excuses, offers no quarter. I look forward to reading and learning much more about Merry and Levon. The more I learn about Levon Cade, the more I like.

It's an okay novella. If a person has not read the previous two Levon Cade novels from Dixon, don't bother with this one. Not a good introduction to the series. Lots of action, but absolutely no backstory.

Short and sweet reading

Dixon keeps getting better. The story has action and suspense. Pick up this Levon tale and spend some time with a real lone hero.
