Ran is a 4th grader with a magical family that is too overprotective to the mind of this young sorceress, especially since her mom doesn't spend near the time with her that she'd like. She has a magical pair of sneakers that transforms her little body into that of a grown young woman so why not use them to go one adventures?! Well Ran sure tests her older brother, Jin, and her father's skills at keeping her safe... especially once she meets rich playboy Otaro Mikado, who takes a liking to the grown Ran...

I fell in love with Ran and the Gray World in volume 1 with the gorgeous, detailed art and the precocious 4th grader who wanted to grow up too fast. And could with the help of a pair of magical sneakers. Volume 7 ties up Ran’s story wonderfully in this final installment of the series. I’m sad to see Ran grow up and leave but I’m happy at the magical woman she becomes.

Hibi has been a favorite of mine since he appeared in Ran’s life. I love how he supported her ill-fated romance even though he was totally against it. He features heavily in her mourning of Otaro and I loved how her magic helped show us how fractured she was feeling. When you’re grief stricken friends don’t always know how to help but Hibi and Nio, her rival managed to be there for her.

While we fast forward through Ran’s growth into young adulthood I loved how this was shown to us through her taking magic study seriously and focusing on getting to know her friends better. We also see Jin’s romance end in the best way possible! It was a great way to show us just how mature Ran is too.

The best thing about volume 7 though is the series of character portraits in the front of the volume. Each major player with their young and adult selves. What a wonderful addition and well worth picking up this volume just to have.

Ran and the Gray World is a series I highly recommend for it’s gorgeous, detailed art, precocious protagonist and fanciful magic. With equal measures of romance and personal growth Ran bespells us with her journey to adulthood.

Adorabile! E disegni super. Bello bello.

2020 Read #467

I think, after all is said and done, this concluding volume was what I had wanted from the series all along. Sure, I wanted to see kid-Ran gallivant as grown-up Ran and have adventures, but I didn’t need the problematic (and frankly gross) interludes that were her relationship with Otaro. This final volume acts as a conclusion and epilogue, but it is just really lovely as an ending and as a finale to a coming-of-age story. I just wish the rest of the series hadn’t been so messy leading up to this point. As it is, though, Ran and the Gray World stays on my shelves as a series I’ll definitely revisit because the characters and world are ones I have become invested in for sure.

A book-length epilogue or denouement has Ran grieving, healing, and getting on with life. All the loose ends are tidied up, and many of the side characters get their own little resolutions. It's a nice wind-down for a pretty good series, marred only by the presence of the creepy sleazebag who has single-handedly kept this from becoming a great series in my mind. I don't know why the author is so attached to him . . .

This last volume was very cute and overall a nice conclusion to the mess that was the last few volumes. I especially loved Ran's crying chapter in this volume.

To be honest I'm not sure how I feel about this series though, haha. The art was absolutely STUNNING and unique, and the concepts behind the magic were really interesting. I loved reading a comic where the protagonist has a HUGE, supportive and loving family.

But this series also has a fair amount of problematic content, such as the relationship with a huge age gap, where Ran pretends to be an adult and flirts with/dates an older man. Since it was a coming-of-age story I kept hoping the author was using it to portray Ran as being irresponsible/making dangerous decisions. To an extent she did, however, as the series went on it became clear that the author wanted us to support this relationship and be sad when it comes to an end, bleh.

Along with various questionable things like small side jokes about weight, emphasis on beauty and female character's measurements, Ran's Dad is a normal-looking old man while her Mom looks like an absolute goddess with the body and face of a 25-year old. etc.

The story and storytelling also were a bit sporadic, bouncing from a slice of life/shoujo to an epic fantasy battle (?) and back again. I got kind of bored/annoyed by the middle since I felt the beginning set me up to be reading a cute magical slice of life but was instead suddenly sent to Inu Yasha for two volumes. I probably would have enjoyed it more if I cared at all about the older dude but, well, I didn't.

It concluded with Ran learning some lessons, learning to think about others and not just herself, and in a relationship with someone the same age as her. Overall I'd give this series 3 stars, but 5 stars for the art, haha.

I don't think this is any of the typical manga styles. It's a whimsical and fun fantasy adventure. I love the parent's dynamic and their relationship with their kids. Jin caught my attention the most. He's Ran(the main character)'s brother and he is the best! The characters are quite fleshed out however the pacing is a bit off sometimes. Ran is such an adorkable, seeing her falling in love with Ohtaro and changing him as a person felt weird yet touching. But Hibi and her relationship reminded me of Lee and Sakura from cardcaptor sakura. It is a very lighthearted manga compared to what I just read and the art style is just superb!!!! It is so 'colourful' even though manga doesn't in colour. The story is more like a 3.5 stars but I think the art style really enhance my reading experience with it! So 4 stars!

The most underrated manga series ever by Aki Irie !
The story is about 10 years old Ran Uruma who wants to be an adult. She is a sorcerer's daughter who can transfrom into a teen-adult with her shoes.

basically this is a coming age story of Ran Uruma.
I cried when Ran ask permission to her father to go training with her Istructor, Tamae. and The Father who so protective of her finally realize that her daughter is not a child and ready to grow up finally giver his blessing and permission to go training.

omg. this chapter never failed me. I always cried everytime I read this. This is my third time and it wont be my last.

Go read this series. The art is beautiful to look at. You won't regret this.

I had so many issues with the first few problems with this manga. Mainly revolving around that very problematic theme in the first few. I'm so glad I kept reading this series. This final volume absolutely blew me away. I'm so dad that it's over. This volume moved me to tears. Ran, you will be missed.

Diventiamo grandi insieme!

You can’t discuss this book without addressing the 600 pound gorilla in the room. Ran may transform into an almost 20 year old when she climbs into her favorite running shoes, but she remains an elementary school girl. The sexualization of Ran continues in this volume as hers is the only character description page with physical measurements listed. It is unsettling to say the least. So not only is Otaro a creep, whichever editor was responsible for this is cringy. And, sorry Hibi and Ran, but 4th grade is way too early for a romantic entanglement! This oversized (nearly 300 pages) final volume adds redundant closure to the larger story with a corpse insect vs sorcerer prologue along with an epilogue, of sorts, for many of the main characters. I love Irie’s line work and the dense, vibrant backgrounds. Her storytelling has been largely scattershot, however, throughout the seven volume series. So I’m not sure I would recommend this series.

Rating for the full series.

While I did find this wrap up to be a satisfying heartwarming conclusion, I have a hard time reconciling the choice to progress a relationship between the physically aged up Ran (still mentally an ELEMENTARY SCHOOL aged child) and a grown man who assumes she’s still of school age. That was definitely a CHOICE, and severely detracted from this story that has so many OTHER interesting characters and story lines. Also, Otaro could have easily not been a pervert, predatory and potential love interest character, and the story would not have changed for it. So yeah, that was… a choice. I continued this series to end due to the gorgeous art and interesting world, could have been a knockout series without the previous mentioned “ick”.

thank god i finished this horrendous series, Makoto and Ran are cute together, okay but i don't understand why and how Ran was suddenly all happy after Outarou passed away, i was like huh? So she leaves to learn magic, her brother married Sango and has a baby, predictable. In the end i can assure you that the Outarou character was flat.

Lovely and heartwarming conclusion and epilog to the series. Though I still can't get over the Ran/Otaro teasing in the previous volumes, I'm relieved that this volume strayed from it and gave Ran more story and purpose (her training and actual growth).

Growing up is about both change and choice. You suddenly have to find a balance between being unattached and discovering a reason for living. That space must be the gray world that Ran was slumbering through.
