Supremacy of Wolves #2

Kiss of the Alpha

Rate this book
Jay Tabor, rebel leader of Territory Three has done something he swore he would never do, and that’s work with Quinn, the Supreme Alpha of the Nine Territories, to save his brother Aaron’s life. Now on the run after his rebel hideout was discovered in Virginia, Jay has found a relatively safe haven for his insurgent group deep in the mountains of Tennessee. His peace is short-lived, however, when he gains a new captive—Devon, the Alpha of Territory Three.

Devon has been beaten, tortured and starved by the rebels in an effort to "tame" him, but when he's transferred to a new camp, he discovers not only kindness but an unwanted attraction to his new captor—one that goes both ways. Devon has finally found his true mate in Jay, but the man is his sworn enemy, and a dominant, controlling lover, who insists on his independence.

When they’re both kidnapped by forces bent on harming them, Jay has only one chance to save his wolf. He has to prove that Devon is his submissive partner and he has to do it in front of their enemies in order to save their lives. With only one chance to make it good, he has to put on a show or risk losing his lover and his mate forever.

This book just hooked me from the first page to the last! It really matches the first book but has is own sizzling, touching and steamy scenes for sure! Jay and Devon, both were already introduced with the first book but now you've got the chance to know them better. Both men are typical Alpha males, okay, one more than the other, but the mixture of that mating makes the whole book quiet intriguing and so damn hot. Both, Devon and Jay, got under your skin instantly and to see them circling each other with their stubborn thickheads, well. Sometimes you just want to shake some sense in them! But to see them getting closer and closer to each other is just amazing and you will love every minute reading and following them on their way! The submission and trust building and the hot as hell "mating" now and then...awesome!! And then the twist at the end...I really found myself whispering "Oh I dare you, Jay!!!" more than once. But hey, when someone deserves a HEA then it has to be these two for sure after this rollercoaster ride of feelings. When you loved "Property of the Alpha" you just have to read this book!!

Decent read but I just couldn’t stand Devon’s characters, his and Jay’s dynamic was just so odd throughout the entire book, I couldn’t wrap my head around it entirely. Really loved Tessie and that we got to see more of Aaron and Quinn!

4.5* I put off reading this one for a while because, with very few exceptions, the trope of Alpha wolves submitting to humans gives me agita. I finally decided to read it because Book 3 interested me and I knew the main characters would be introduced in Book 2. I LOVED IT. Jamie (Jay) is Aaron's brother (Book 1) and Devon (spelled Devan in Book 1) is the compassionate Alpha of the Third Territory. They meet when Devon is captured by the rebels and presented to Jay as a gift. Jay immediately stops the cruel treatment, feeds him, clothes him...and notices how Devon responds to his firm touch, and authoritative commands. Could the Alpha wolf indeed be a submissive?? Their response to each other is instantaneous and scorching and in the heat of the moment Devon attempts to bite (mate with) Jay. Though the mating bite is not completed, Devon's wolf has already accepted Jay and should Jay refuse the mating, Devon would suffer horrible pain, become feral in weeks and eventually have to be put down. Jay, a Dominant human, has zero interest in being an Alpha wolf's bottom boy like his brother is for Quinn. However, Quinn shows up, hears about the botched mating and accepts Devon's request to put him down now, before the feral stage sets in. Jay can no more allow that to happen than he can deny the attachment he already feels to Devon. He bares his neck and accepts the bite.

What I really liked about this book, apart from how damn hot it is, is the way Devon's submission is handled. Though he submits to Jay, he is still strong and is not afraid to show it when needed. It is obvious that, while he can rip Jay limb from limb if he were so inclined, he chooses to submit to him. The authors also showed that the Wolf kiss only exacerbates traits the human partner already has, so Jay is already Dominant becomes more so, and his strength increases as well. This helps to make it more believable that a wolf submits to him. I loved that their submission was confined to their private moments and (with the exception one of the final scenes) there was no humiliation involved. I loved that the authors didn't have Devon be all 'Master this and Master that,' and I loved that Jay was turned on when Devon was, at times, dominant.

The story flows well. The humor is amazing, and I loved the inclusion of Tessie and all the hilarity that came with her. Just a wonderful, feel-good read.

I did take 1/2 a star off because I hate public (humiliation) scenes even if they're supposedly necessary to save the protagonists' lives. Some of the plot was also slightly off, but I just loved everything about this couple and was happy I read this book.

Off to book 3!

The second book in this world, set thirty years after the Pestilence eradicated over 70 percent of humans and werewolves took over, is just as intense, fascinating, and suspenseful as the first. And I strongly recommend you read ‘Property of the Alpha’ before ‘Kiss of the Alpha’ – much of the world is explained in that book, and I don’t think you’ll get the full effect of this powerful sequel without those details. ‘Kiss of the Alpha’ starts right after book one ends, and shows things from Jay’s perspective. Jay is Aaron’s younger brother, and a rebel leader trying to regain freedom from the werewolves for all enslaved humans. Jay saved Aaron’s life at the end of book one, and had to relocate his camp since Aaron’s mate Quinn, the Supreme Alpha of all nine northern American territories, would not have let the rebels survive near his residence in what used to be Washington, DC.

Meh...
This time around we have Devon (a trained) Alpha for territory 3 and Jay leader of the rebels in T3 and Aaron's brother.
Quinn (book 1) figured the lack of 'real' Alphas could be helped by training Alphas, since it was a matter of 'attitude'. This is why that the somewhat timid, history-loving and peaceful Devon ends up being Alpha after the atrocious way the previous Alpha treated the inhabitants of T3.
Devon is trying to work together with the humans in the territory and make sure that everyone is educated and living together in harmony.

One day Devon is captured in a trap by the rebels (Alan the ULTRA evil rebel from book 1) and tortured (like REAL torture) for weeks, before the rebels that captured him arrives at Jay's camp.
Then Devon is gifted to Jay, and Jay has to decide what he wants to do.

Here is where the story becomes too 'clean' for my tastes. Devon has been tortured for WEEKS (we're talking waterboarding, being kept awake, put in a small cage and so on) but as soon as he meets Jay we have sunshine and happiness. I get that this is the shifter-world (something I felt 'forgave' some of the actions in the first book) but the way Devon just trusts Jay, and the way they both come together even though Jay is a freaking, fucking idiot rebel, did not work for me.
description

Then they have to decide how to continue on after their very public mating... I never felt that Jay gave much of a crap for Devon. He kept having his plans and his ulterior motives and NONE of them freaking opened their mouthes and had a conversation.
Also And even worse Mikkail is still alive and breathing?! What the hell?????
Once again Quinn's inherent disregard and total lack of sympathising with the human population is beyond my comprehension.
On the one hand they keep talking like humans are stupid idiots that need to be taken in hand and have Masters to help them because they are too stupid to live, but on the other hand the werewolves completely ignore the responsibility that comes with such a decision.
Which means that Mikkail is still walking around, and I have more than a little sympathy for the rebels (again sometimes! Not Alan though!)
description

Well onwards and upwards. Devon and Jay arrive at Devon's house, and then follows a fight to be 'on top' in the relationship. Jay does not have a submissive bone in his body, and Devon has submissive bones in SPADES. BUT with the articulation that humans need to be the subs, Devon and Jay have quite a few issues.
Also we have Mollie, Tessie, Aaron and Quinn taking up the pages.
When both Jay and Devon are kidnapped by the evil Alan, things turn... Really freaking weird and the voyeurs come out!

Yeah this book, did not work for me! Way too much horrible stuff, not enough redemption, the MCs were quite unsympathetic (especially Jay) and the whole love-connection did not work, since Devon and Jay didn't talk and it felt like Jay had a foot out the door, most of the time.

REVIEWED FOR PRISM BOOK ALLIANCE

4.25 Stars

This was a great follow on to Property of the Alpha but with a very big twist – the dominant one in the relationship is not the wolf, completely turning everything the wolves believed on its head and causing Quinn yet more problems.

Where Aaron in book 1 was totally submissive his brother Jay in this book is at the other end of the scale and no matter how hard he falls for his wolf he will not defer to him or call him master.

Jay has been the rebel leader in territory three for a while and has caused untold problems for the wolves. We learnt a little of his back story in the first book and the authors expand on that here. Jay is tired both emotionally and physically and although he will do anything for the cause all the death and destruction is starting to take its toll on him. He is compassionate and open to reason but he must be careful as those attributes could get him killed.

Devon, or Devan as he was in book 1, is also compassionate and has settled in well to his role as the new alpha in territory three, especially as he is not a true born alpha but one that has been trained for the role. He has his work cut out if he is to win back the trust of everyone there as the memories of the previous abusive alpha are still very clear in people’s minds.

Devon is kidnapped and brutally tortured by a group of hard-core rebels and then gifted to Jay. Jay is horrified at the treatment the wolf has received and feels oddly drawn to care for and protect him. Devon is nowhere near as submissive as Aaron is but he is happy to let Jay make the decisions, well mostly, there is nothing at all submissive about Devon when Jay threatens to leave! It feels well balanced between them, although there are all sorts of teething problems, but overall they work well with each other – a fact that doesn’t escape the notice of Quinn.

Great second book, totally different dynamic and further world building – really enjoying this series.

HOME RUN! This one is delicious in all sorts of ways. It turns the normal stereotype on its sipe (the dominant is NOT the wolf) and that sets up a dynamic that is not only interesting but fresh and engaging. Neither man/wolf seems "lesser" then the other - and that makes you really see this as a relationship rather then a dynamic. Hot sex, working through different feelings and situations. This is the type of writing which I love - and Ms. West has left behind, in this one, same o same o and gone with a shift that delivers the goods.

Another great story

This is the second book in the Supremacy of Wolves series and it is just as great as the first one. Well-written and full of action. Add in a fascinating storyline with wonderful characters and I was so captivated that I refused to close the book until the end. Amazing world building and I am eagerly looking forward to the next book!

The only reason I am not giving this book 5 stars is because it was similar to the first one and because I was already bored of the stupid (easily fixed) constant misunderstandings on the first book and then I get to this one and it was misunderstanding after misunderstanding.

Honestly?? If I were Jay I would feel sad, disappointed and angry at of how little does Devon think of him. At the smallest of misunderstanding Devon starts thinking the worst of Jay. This trope was a constant thing during the first book and this one too. Let’s see the next one...

Sigue siendo problematico pero está mejor estructurado, la dinámica es diferente y hay mucho más contexto. Las advertencias son necesarias. Hay mucha intimidación, manipulación y coherción antes de llegar a lo consensual, así que... no lo recomiendo.

This is my favorite so far. Jay and Devon made me feel so much anxiety and love, I can't even describe the precise moment when I felt so powerless ... Los quiero mucho.

It's very similar to the first book. If you liked that, then you'll like this too no doubt.
I enjoy the idea of this alternative world and the characters, but the execution feels whacky and has several odd inconsistencies, not overly good writing, spelling errors and unreasonable characters.

My issues in more detail:
Consistency. Pretty sure Aaron and Jay had incredibly blue eyes in the first book, now they are both green all of a sudden. Devon was spelled "Devan" throughout the first book. What the hell?
Quinn is kinda likable here, but apparently Aaron turned into a complete dimwit plaything! Ugh!
There's quite a lot of spelling and grammatical errors as well.
Some facts are mentioned over and over and over, and get so boring.
The characters are unreasonable. Jay is similar to Quinn, in that he is such a damn dominant guy he acts like the world will explode of he has to submit to anyone, and that's just... silly!
I hated how he acted a lot like "oh I don't mind letting him do me in the a** even though I was straight up until 2 days ago, but he wants me to call him MASTER? As if that would EVER happen?!"
I love dominant guys, but the way it was written here came across inconsistent and weird.
Their love happened over the course of what, 3 days? I get the wolf mating bite and it's suddenness but the characters go so much back and forth being eternal love and "omg he lied to me after all!" acting like prepubescent teens. How often they get heartbroken because their mate does not love them after all made me wonder if they ever use those heads of theirs.
I cannot help but feel bad for Devon, because he's loyal from the start, and Jay acts like an ass trying to prove an unnecessary point of how dominant he is over him.

Don't expect a well written, well thought out story with amazing characters and their growth here. It's a rather mediocre story with a lot of (not that satisfying) smut, it has it's good moments and it's not a bad read simply cause it is a longer book so you get attached to the characters a bit.
All books in this series basically follow the same pattern... a struggle for dominance between two characters, with the sub giving in very early on and being totally loyal, but the dom treating him like a slave for no real reason... oh and someone wants to make the other call him "Master".

I had read the first book in this series last fall, and figured it was time to find out what was going on with Aaron's brother Jay....

Jay (Jamie) Tabor believes in the rebel cause -- taking back their world from the wolves -- but when he discovers that Devon, the captured Alpha of Territory Three, is being tortured by his team, he's furious and is determined to help Devon recover. He senses a deep connection to Devon, and is sure that Devon feels it too. Devon's overwhelmed by his reaction to Jay -- there's something about this human that calls to Devon's wolf, and makes it want to submit to Jay's innate dominance. As Jay and Devon bond, they discover that they're also life-mates -- and Jay reluctantly agrees to stay with Devon and live with the wolves so they can both survive. As he adjusts to his new life, he slowly realizes that the wolves are not the monsters they've been made out to be, but isn't entirely sure how much he can trust them. Devon knows that Jay's not happy being his mate, and worries that he wants to return to the rebels. However, they now see him as a traitor, and abduct him, and when Devon attempts a rescue, he's captured as well. In order to find a way to freedom for both of them, Jay must rely on Devon's trust and submission in a way he'd never intended.

It's a great sequel to the first book, and you learn much more about the post-apocalyptic world where wolves rule. Devon's such a sweetie! Although Devon's the 'Alpha' of the territory, he wasn't born an alpha -- he was appointed, and it shows. He's never completely comfortable in the role. He craves Jay's dominance, and is happiest when Jay takes the reins. Similarly, Jay's a confident rebel leader, but when he goes to live with the wolves, he is forced to rely on Devon for guidance and support. So the D/s dynamic between the two is very....fluid. You're never sure who's going to be pitching, and who's going to be catching....

I probably would have gone to 4 stars, except for the ending. Jay's forced to devise a way to get himself and Devon away from their captors, but I really wasn't expecting it play out as it did. And...I couldn't figure out how/why Devon could forgive him so easily for what seemed to be a colossal betrayal. A definite WTF!!!

2019 = 3 stars
2022 = dnf

It's been a few years since I read this, and my tastes have definitely changed. After having just finished a well-written shifter mates novel, this one was so bad in comparison.

It started out with major torture, but improved when Jay arrives to help Devon. They kiss and mate with each other. Things go downhill when they get back to Devon's home. Jay wants to leave, and Devon chains him up to keep him from leaving. Then Devon forces Jay to submit, with the help of the chemicals in his saliva.

Let's throw in some dub-con as well.

🚫 This is where I was done. Ugh, no. It all felt so wrong with torture, rape and a fight for dominance. I'm going back to reading romance now!

Dystopian world where wolf shifters rule the world, after a virus decimates the world, and humans are servants. In this book Jay is the leader of the human resistance. His brother Aaron is mated to Quinn, the leader of all 9 territories and Alpha wolf shifter. During his travels he meets up with a group of rebels who have captured a wolf. Devon is highly mistreated. Jay takes care of him, but Devon needs more if he is going to make it. He needs his mate, who happens to be Jay. There is some wild passionate very public sex to save Devon (in front of Quinn no less). But what then? Jay does not want to say goodbye to the resistance but can't leave Devon either. And Devon is an unusual wolf. He runs one of the nine territories for Quinn, but is not a greedy bastard. He does not use or mistreat humans. So Jay falls in love in the end and stays with Devon to rule the territory together.
There is a little bit about Aaron and Quinn in this book and I loved to see them again. Developing their relationship further.

*SPOILERS*

I have been a fan of Shannon West's books for several years now and this book doesn't disappoint. It's a great sequel to the first book in the series. Jamie "Jay" is a rebel leader in territory three leading the revolution against the wolves. He soon finds out that he is the mate to the Alpha of territory three, Devon. However soon after mating with Devon it becomes clear that Devon isn't a true Alpha wolf and that in surprise to Quinn the supreme Alpha, Jay is the dominant lover in Devon and his relationship. I don't wanna give to much away beyond that, but if you enjoy M\M romances with D/a dynamic then this should be in your to be read list. However this book my not be everyone's cup of tea as it has dubious consent, drug references that may make some readers uncomfortable. All in all it was a great read and what I have come to expect from Shannon West.

Meh. I'm guessing this was a try for plot diversity...

It fell short for me as it just.was.not.believable. At all. How could an alpha wolf.shifter be submissive to a human, no matter that that human had dominance oozing out his pores! Just, no. Even Jay admitted Devon outweighed him, and Devon, when at full strength also outsized him. For this plot to.work the human has to be at least double the wolf's size. Anyway, although there wee some hot scenes, this book didn't do anything for me since the main theme was so hard to swallow. Great writing of course despite the unbelievable details that were too offputting to accept for this.reader.

Love this series!

Each book gets better and better! Well paced, great characters, a storyline that isn't a typical shifter series. Jay and Devon had much to overcome, Jay especially, and watching his transformation into being Devon's mate and love was fun and teeth grinding at the same time! Didn't know if I wanted to hug or slug him! Well worth it, and I can't wait til the next book!

I enjoyed this series; it was a fun read and so far I have really loved the characters.

I don't typically write reviews or ask questions, but this one thing is driving me crazy. I can't figure out if I missed something in the story or if it is an editing miss...

In book one Aaron and Jamie(Jay) have blue eyes....in book two they are green....did I miss something??
