Sally decides to don her father's magic crown in the hope that its "freedom emeralds" will help her locate him. Imagine her surprise when the crown turns up missing! Sonic and the Freedom Fighters are shocked to learn of Robotnik's plan to separate the emeralds and spread them far and wide, thereby rendering them powerless!
Oh, ok, so now we have the Freedom Emeralds too, instead of the Chaos Emeralds? Yeah, alright, sure, we'll just put those right next to the other random emeralds this series has that nobody will remember, like the Time Stones and the Phantom Ruby.... and besides, what do these Freedom Emeralds do anyway? They just sit on top of this crown and make Princess Sally royalty.......... WOW, WHAT POWER! Also, I know I should've asked this earlier in the series, but I'll go ahead and ask now: why are the stories in this series separated into parts? They all begin and end in the same comic, so why do they need to separate them out into multiple different segments? I guess it's so that the readers with short attention spans have a good place to stop whenever they have read enough....... and since this is a Sonic comic, that applies to every single reader.
Issue #3

I guess it's admirable that they tried to create a big story that fills the entire book, but sadly, the final product feels emptier and more mindless than any previous story telling attempts. It's one of those comic book issues where the authors just HAVE to publish something, but they don't have any bright ideas. So the story ends up being random and absolutely devoid of logic. The "freedom emeralds", which the heroes have to collect and are said to have great powers, are nothing more than worthless pieces of glass with the only purpose of being a plot device. And also, Robotnik now knows the location of Knothole village. But no worries, this fact will be absolutely forgotten by the next issue, I'm sure of it. So, is it a complete waste of time? Yeah, mostly. But again, if you're here for those 90s cartoon gags, you might still find something worthy here.
