For Mike Gray, his life continues to be series of mysteries and unanswered question. Even the man who raised him, his paternal grandfather, was a question mark. Beyond the love, understanding, and nurturing lay the unanswered question of why a disgraced ex-Royal Naval Admiral would pulled himself out of a bottle and take upon himself to bring a child home as raise him as his own. The death of his grandfather still haunts him, and even after confronting the head of the Tregallion clan, Max Tregallion, so many question remained unanswered. Still looking for answers, Mike battled his way across the stars now that the Sirriens have declared war, and prepares to take the fight to the enemy. In a covert war in new ships and untested crew, all the while swearing to protect the lives of the men and woman under his command and just do his duty. Fate and destiny had other plans, plunging him and the woman he loves into one desparate situation after the other, and the future of the free stars hanging in the balance, Mike reluctantly accepted his destiny, and the part he must play.
The book starts with Mike and HMS Nemesis returning from there mission and then suddenly goes back to before the start of the very first book. If this was so important to the author why didn’t he put this at the start of the first book?
Eventually the author gets back to the main story, but I found this didn’t hang together that well. Perhaps I was irritated by the start of the book, but lots of little things just didn't feel right. Contrived Incidents that you would expect in a third rate Hollywood movie. Even Mike seemed a bit off, some of his decisions were a bit questionable. However there were still some interesting moments and the story moves on at good pace.
In comparison to the previous book I found this one a little bit disappointing, however it was still a very decent read. If possible I would have given 3.5 stars.
Story behind the but: I was enjoying the work of another author who carried on the works of H. Beam Piper magnificently😁 there were 2 books in a series which were a continuation the classic Space Viking. It was a cliff hanger at the end of volume 2 and then----NOTHING!!!!!!! The author wasted his talents on some sword and sorcery series and left a lot of people hanging without a fare-the-well. 😥Please PLEASE.don't do this again. A 4th volume finishing this war would be welcome indeed. You have done a great job world and culture building don't let it languish Bill Hodges a fan P.S. if my comments about the other series seems harsh to the author (You know who you are) I apologize, but that work was like reading Treasure Island---- with the last 10 chapters torn out.
Rob Buckman is dam fine writer and story teller. A lot of people can write but only a few can tell a great story Rob is one of the few. If you have never read him before read this series you won't be disappointed.
The first book in the series i felt was a bit slow to start....however once i got going it got more addictive. The second and Third book did not disappoint..a darn good yarn. Sure there were some editing issues, but those did not detract from a good story. Can't wait for the next episode.
A very good series building to a great not-ending. We need to know what happens next but it has been too long for a 4th book. Strongly recommend the first ( and only) three books
So far, the entire series has been one notch above good. Some editing errors make it a little difficult at times to read (breaks between obvious stopping points, such as going to sleep need to be added) and a few correctly spelled but wrong words made it in. Story wise, good well developed background. Current plot is also good. Well worth the time and money. I will be checking out other series from this author.
The story is great but the editing sucks. He really needs a decent proofreader because all the spelling and grammar errors are very distracting. A major error in my opinion is that he uses Ag plates in the first two books and in this one it was referred to as Cg.
