First half is a good way to show how friends and acquaintances of Tatsuya and Miyuki react to and deal with the news through conversations with one another. Some good character development and though I feel for Honoka, it is good that it is neither quickly forgotten nor ignored through the easy harem route that is so common in the genre. The second part has some long term plots and events from past events coming together and setting up what appears to be an intriguing continuation of the story and resolution to a very long running behind-the-scenes plot. It raises some questions as well, but that is to be expected from the first part of an arc. For a first part of an arc, the ending is also good, no mid-combat cliff-hanger, just a short-term resolved event which leaves you wondering about the long term consequences.
Still, if you read it for the High School stuff you are going to be disappointed. I also feel that the author at times is a bit too descriptive of scenes and people. The earlier complaint about differences in height is a good example on why it is weird to describe a character as 5'11" or 6'2" since a casual observer would just think "about 6'".
All in all, a solid addition to the series and an enjoyable read.
In the afterword, the author says that there's no action in this one, but a lot of "angsty emotion (just kidding)." He might be just kidding, but that's basically what it is. Well, not terribly angsty. But this is a set-up story for the rest of the trilogy it starts as well as a wrap-up for the previous story, so I wasn't expecting truly great things.
Actually, it was better than expected. I got a bit irritated with the political machinations, but the fact that Maya wasn't part of them was kind of cool. Honoka disappointed but did not surprise me. Lena was back, if briefly. Despite saying I could have done with less politics, I breezed through this in a day, basically. Nothing much happens until the last few pages, but somehow it was quite enjoyable.
(Then the afterword revealed that this is a three-part story, so I'll be waiting until May to get part 3. Hmph.)
Overall, I think the author is back on form. It'll be interesting to see where the story goes from here.
This was the perfect follow up to last volume‘s event‘s. Loved seeing all the reactions from everyone. The 10 Master Clans Conference is also very exciting. The parts in the USNA were a bit boring but the volume was still great

I like this kind of fantasy-scifi genre, but yeah, as the story goes it's a little bit boring. Though this series still interesting enough, but there are a little secrets to be revealed now.
Volume 17 of Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei is slow, even by the series standards. Very little of the plot is moved forward and there is no action. The entire novel is just different people reacting to the shocking news revealed at the end of volume 16. We do get to see a little more of the Ten Master Clans inner workings and their relationship with the Japanese government but otherwise it's still pretty bad.
