Edward Elmer Smith (also E.E. Smith, E.E. Smith, Ph.D., E.E. “Doc” Smith, Doc Smith, “Skylark” Smith, or—to his family—Ted), was an American food engineer (specializing in doughnut and pastry mixes) and an early science fiction author, best known for the Lensman and Skylark series. He is sometimes called the father of space opera.
Most oh his books have been out of print for years. If you are a fan, you will enjoy the read, even if some of the tech is laughable, in retrospect.
You will enjoy this look back to some of the first 'space opera'. Since his books have been out of print for over 50 years, don't miss this chance to read one of the all time greats.
This author died before the Vietnam war, he wrote most of his books before Einstein's theories. Some things, like living on Jupiter are impossible, but it makes very fine story telling. He doesn't pad his scenes with sex and how the skies look, it's all action and besides his examples, very few earn 60%! That's 3 out of 10, folks and if he didn't know of smaller particles than an electron and still used vacuum tubes, well, so do we, sometimes! The last story in this collection is not the least and if there are a few copy errors, what of it? We are getting a fabulous collection of stories.
The E. E. "Doc" Smith MEGAPACK TM is a tasty collection of a lot of Smith's greatest, and earliest works, introducing readers to the Skylark, Lensman and Tedric series. Theres a number of other stories featured as well, varying in size, and featuring original publication dates (for those who love the details). It's a nice way to get a great heap of Doc Smith in one. For anyone interested in the author himself, and his not insequential impact on the field of science fiction, feel free to check out my blog post on the topic; https://jrmcculloch.medium.com/why-sm....
The Lensmen series is a bit hit or miss for me. The early works are pretty decent, especially the fun capital ship combat. The later bits drag, sometimes painfully so. It's almost "Flash Gordon" levels of ridiculous in many parts.
Overall, I don't think the series has aged especially well, definitely not in today's climate. Some of it is downright embarrassingly bad.
I enjoyed it a lot more as a young kid, to be fair.
Enjoyed all, shame about the quality of the “scan”, many errors. Sure several chunks missing on lensman books. They otherwise would be a good introduction to EE Doc Smith, an author I have enjoyed for years
This Megapack provided almost two years of night time reading. I loved it. Many of the stories I read as a teenager. Many of the stories I had never read.
