I liked a lot of aspects of this book. Biblical fiction really is one of my most favourite genres, and this one was accurate, and enjoyable. The account of Moses and the Exodus out of Egypt has been coming to my attention quite frequently, and so it was great to read another “retelling” of it. I appreciated the variety of characters and their point’s of view through out this book. They were good characters, for the most part, there of course being the ‘bad’ characters, like Pharaoh who was more frustrating than frightening, and the vizier who I very much disliked.

I wish we could’ve seen more of Zipporah in the very end. I was expecting her part of the story to get wrapped up, but perhaps that will continue in the next book of this series.

I wasn’t really able to relate or get to know the characters a whole lot, but I think that is partially because of the writing it style – it just didn’t ‘hit’ me. The writing was somewhat choppy – it didn’t flow all of the time. But there was some great spiritual depth to it, so it was fairly easy to overlook. There were many quotes I wrote down so I can keep in my memory. I will share a few at the end of this post. :)

It was really, really interesting to see the historic side of things – like how devastating the plagues would have really been, and how each plague was God refuting/showing His immense power over each of Egypt’s “gods”. That was just fascinating. I really appreciate the amount of research Sonya Contreras went to, to develop this book. It really added depth and more understanding to this well-known Biblical passage.

As I said, the spiritual truth to this book was great, and I really loved getting to see the Power of God in “Until My Name is Known”. That is one reason I love Biblical fiction so much – it keeps my mind focused on God and surrounded by His glory. Truly magnificent. :)

Some of my favourite quotes were:

“Salome nodded; her eyes were full of tears, ‘Rest comes in letting Him control. Tell Him all your thoughts, but don’t try to control what He does.'” – Chapter 5

“There’s no danger when we are where God has put us.” – Chapter 11

“The Friend of Abraham is bringing His people to know Him. We must change our thinking; we must trust His ways. Yes, it hurts, but I must trust Him.” Spoken from the character, Adlai, Chapter 11

“Ellis responded, ‘How do you know that you’ve done enough?’ ‘It’s not about doing, it’s about being His. When you are His servant, you obey because you love Him. His desires become yours as you obey.’ Nathan said.” – Chapter 20

“Nathan added, ‘God keeps us focused on what we are doing today. He takes care of tomorrow.” – Chapter 20

“The danger of God is the only place for peace.” – Chapter 22

Reading, "Until My Name is Known" I was really impressed by the level of commitment Sonya has shown the Book of Exodus and although this is a fictional re-telling of what could have happen, the author shows a love and desire to bring to this book, research and a sense of authenticity to bring the readers into this re-telling of Moses, not from when he started out as a baby, but as an adult and facing a task that he felt at the time,he wasn't the right person.

Even at the end, there was an inclusion of a map, glossary, and amazing list of books to reference and throughout the story itself, I felt like Sonya really brought the story of Moses and the Exodus to life that toward the end, I found myself anxiously waiting for book two to see how she will continue this series.

The biggest thing to highlight is the fact Sonya shows respect to those who are familiar with Exodus and the story of Moses.

There are gentle nods throughout the book that makes this, even though its a fictional re-telling of the book of Exodus, a fictional story that is biblical sound.

"Until My Name is Known" is a captivating read and one quickly gets lost into the rounded out character development without the background either overpowering or getting lost in the story development.

Instead, there is a wonderful character development and even if you know the story of Moses by heart, this will not only bring a fresh outlook to this known biblical story.

The story changes smoothly. Character interactions are realistic for what could be expected and there are glimpses of both the love Sonya has for the story, but also for the characters as the story progresses to it's ending.

I couldn't help, but wonder, as the story concluded, if there was study guide that could go with this and even if there wasn't one, just transitioning from this to studying the Book of Exodus itself would make this a great addition for a personal or group bible/book study.

Sonya capture the time and the culture that "Until My Name is Known" and along with it, create that much love anticipation for the next book in the series.

This is a book that is well worth the time and investment to read once, maybe twice, or even more than several times.

Thank you LitFuse for this review book.

The account of the Exodus of Moses and the Israelites is probably one of the most widely familiar accounts in history. We may know there were a lot of plagues, but what were the plagues and why were those particular plagues used? It all seems so random. Not so. Our God is a warrior! Everything He does is done with purpose. Sonya Contreras reveals the truth in this astonishing historical fiction retelling.

Excellent representation of viewpoints from Pharoah, Vizier, the top Egyptian priest, Moses, Aaron, Egyptian and Jewish middle class members, and Jewish slaves
Revealed the significance of the plague God used
God took on the gods of Egypt and won decisively
Exemplified the love of God in the midst of tragedy
Convincing story line fits within the Biblical account
Well written, you step into the story and forget you're reading pages
I was learning all the way through the book

Deb’s Dozen: Moses called by God, Zipporah left behind, but God’s Will Be Done.

Until My Name is Known by Sonya Contreras retells the familiar story of Moses from the time he saw God in the burning bush until he led the Israelites across the sea bed to safety—but with a twist.

Contreras personalizes Moses in a way I’ve not seen before. By starting at the burning bush, we see a Moses who has lived contentedly in the desert for forty years. He and his wife, Zipporah, and their sons, Gershom, have tended sheep and lived well. The new baby, Eliezer, is growing strong and healthy. When Moses comes back with the incredible story of the bush and the mission God has given him, Zipporah scoffs—why should God choose him? They’re comfortable where they are, why should they leave? Despite her desires to stay in their home, Zipporah packs up and journeys with Moses as they begin their trek toward Egypt. The night after they receive leave from her father, an angel of the Lord appears demanding that their sons be circumcised, something Zipporah has forbidden. Afraid the angel will kill her sons, she takes a knife and does the deed herself, but she is very bitter. Moses realizes what this cost her and also that the best place for her and their sons is with her father, so he sends them back home.

Aaron is a prominent swne, or healer, in Egypt. One evening he hears a voice telling him to go and meet Moses. Aaron and his trusted slave, along with their guard, head out to meet Moses. Meanwhile, in Egypt, the high priest of Amon-Ra, Badhu, also hears a voice, “Beware of one who seeks to take all of the power of Egypt from Pharaoh.” The stage is set; the die is cast; the Lord God is on the move.

The difference in this book is that Contreras takes us into the everyday lives of the Hebrews and Egyptians. She shows us what their lives were like. We care for these people and are saddened when the plagues begin to strike the land. The ordinary people didn’t really understand—much as so many people today do not understand that God is not to be mocked—He is in charge of this universe. Dinah and Adlai and General Chike and Hannah and Nathan and Carmel—all people you will get to know who are affected by this strange battle between God and Pharaoh. You may like this retelling of such a familiar story though the device of the ordinary people caught up in the conflict.Until My Name Is Known (Tell of My Kingdom’s Glory).Three stars.

Sonya says of herself on her webpage, “I’m Sonya Contreras. Author of Biblical Fiction. Married to my best friend. Challenged by eight sons’ growing pains. Enjoying the moment. Writing about my family, reading and life.

Childhood with five sisters could never prepare me for the future God had for me. Graduating from Cedarville University with a major in comprehensive science education failed to fully equip me for my future. Teaching two years in Christian schools only showed me how much I needed to know.

While attending Institute for Creation Research Graduate Program, I married my husband of 23 years. Whatever training I received had to be enough for the eight boys that God gave to us.

No amount of sisterly interaction prepared me for a boy’s mind searching for adventure. No degree of college could help me stay one step ahead of the creativity and ingenuity of a boy on a mission. But all that training established my roots deeply on the Bible and enabled my searching heart to keep their wanderings grounded in truth, love and God’s Word.” Walk well, Sonya!

Some of my favorite fiction novels since I've been a book reviewer are those that take a well known story from the Bible and expand on it without losing the initial meaning. We all know that there is more to the story than what we read and once again, another talented author has managed to do just that. Sonya Contreras has launched a series called Tell of My Kingdom's Glory and in the debut novel, Until My Name is Known, we are transported back to the time of Moses. Not the Moses who was put in a basket and floated up the river, but this was after his killing of an Egyptian guard and now he has be called by God to go to Pharoah to seek the release of the Israelites who have been slaves for more than 40 years.

Those familiar with the story remember how Pharoah isn't about to let them go, because they are the man power capable of building his empire, and no matter how many times Moses and Aaron attempt to convince him to let their people go, Pharoah refuses. After all he has the power of all the Egyptian gods he can call upon through his viziers and priests, so until the threats are taken seriously by all, the plagues of Egypt will continue. I love how Sonya will expand on the outcome of each of the plagues, how they might have been perceived by both the Egyptian people as well as the Israelites who got a slight reprieve from the plagues but still had to endure the first few. It showcases how Pharoah might have perceived his sense of power prior to the plagues and how with the downfall of each, he loses a bit more of his power but also the respect of his people who look to him for their sense of well being. Just like those in powerful positions, Pharoah isn't about to be taken for granted, and until it seems like it all is just about to slip away, he relents, but only enough to realize, he can't let the people stay gone. He has to bring them back otherwise suffer the ruination of his kingdom.

I received Until My Name is Known by Sonya Contreras compliments of Litfuse Publicity and Bull Head Press for my honest review. I did not receive any monetary compensation for a favorable review aside from a free copy of this book, and the opinions contained here are strictly my own. I look forward to seeing what is next in this series and it truly does convey to the reader, that God doesn't want any to perish but to come to know Him, through the many wonders and promises found in His Word. You can tell quite a bit of research went into this book based on the number of resources she refers to in her bibliography to help us fill in the missing pieces. The best part of this book for me, was seeing it laid out as the 10 plagues of Egypt were called down by Moses and how it simply did just happen in the course of a couple weeks. It shows how far God is willing to go to reach people with each plague getting more darker as Pharoah turns in desperation to the gods of Egypt to counter God's power. I would rate this one 4 out of 5 stars based strictly on the formatting of the book. I would have like to have seen it spaced better to help the reader from feeling overwhelming by the lack of spacing on each page.

It seems that the Exodus tale has been popular fiction fodder this year, as this is the third I’ve read involving Moses. Until My Name is Known comes from a new to me author and starts with Moses recounting his meeting with God at the burning bush. The narrative doesn’t stay with Moses, however, and we soon get perspectives from his wife Zipporah, his brother Aaron, and various Hebrews and Egyptians as they experience the plagues God sends to the land. It’s possible there were too many voices though; I had to reread sections sometimes in order to remember a particular person and their relationship to another. A list of characters – especially of those who aren’t in the Bible – at the start might have been helpful.

Much of what’s written is based on Biblical text and imagination where the fictional characters are concerned. But I admit to being surprised at some of the suppositions Contreras made. Aaron is described as a doctor, while Joseph was supposedly the great Egyptian architect Imhotep. Interestingly, I found no mention of Miriam, the sister of Aaron and Moses. The theme throughout the book is that Pharaoh doesn’t care for his people. He lets them suffer through each plague out of pride. How can a man who thinks he is a god surrender to another God?

Until My Name is Known is a readable novel and I certainly didn’t have any reluctance to finish it. I did spot a couple of errors that made it through the editing process, but they weren’t enough to throw the book across the room! I do need to admit something though: I signed up to read and review this book without doing research on it first. I looked up Bull Head Press after receiving my copy and found the only company officer I could locate is the author. It’s my view, therefore, that this is self-published and I have a long-standing policy of not reviewing self-published works. I also believe, however, in honoring commitments. Book two in this new series is called I Have Called You by Name, but I’m not sure if I’ll read it. Until My Name is Known doesn’t end on a cliffhanger and works well as a standalone piece of Biblically-based fiction.

My Review:
Very similar to Lynn Austin, Sonya Contreras blend a rich Biblical history with a fictional account. This book actually appealed to me more because of the type of story that was written. Sometimes it's nice to get a break and read something based on a real situation or happening. The author managed to give each character in the story a strong voice, so we get a chance to see the vantage point from each character, no stone was left unturned. Each vivid character comes to life through the words and writings of the author. Very rich, strong and very believable.

The story the Israelite's exodus from Egypt. That Biblical account is a pretty huge one that saturates the Bible. The world now turns towards Israel and watches how history once again will unfold, but will God's people be protected? And I think we all know what the outcome will be in that situation. It is one situation I hate to watch but at the same time I'm believing God for a victory. after all they are His people and He will do whatever it takes to protect them. That is why a story like this is so fitting and this moment in time. It was a good reminder of past and future as well as present events.

Today’s historians and archaeologists puzzle over the fall of the Old Kingdom of Egypt, But the world at that time heard of God. The world knew that He is the Lord. His Name was proclaimed in all the earth. Book One of the series Tell of My Kingdom’ s Glory

I think the best movie version of the Exodus story is Cecil B. DeMille’s “The Ten Commandments” starring Charlton Heston as Moses. I think, so far, the best book version is this one. Ms. Contreras has done a magnificent job of bringing Moses and Pharaoh to life and their clash of wills. She has also done the same with all the supporting characters giving them their own unique identities. The story begins after the incident with the burning bush and takes us all the way to the crossing of The Red Sea. Even though you know the events that are going to happen let me tell you this is one very exciting book. Ms. Contreras has done a great job with her research and her skill is evident in her presentation as a story rather than a message. “Until My Name is Known” is a wonderful, interesting story that will keep you flipping pages. I recommend this book highly and I do look forward to the next book in this series from this highly talented author.

My Thoughts:

Until My Name is Known is the first book in Sonya Contreras debut series, The Tell of My Kingdom's Glory and it is a good book. As my regular followers know I am always interested in reading books from brand new authors and that one of my favorite genres is Biblical fiction because of all the history. Sonya Contreras writes with authority about the bible, Egypt during biblical times, how the different religions were structured, and how the hierarchy was structured. The book has the right balance of fact and fiction to keep the book interesting. I enjoyed this book and felt like I was there watching things unfold as I read. I liked that the book told the story from the different points of view from Pharaoh to the slaves. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Biblical Fiction, you will enjoy this. I look forward to reading more from Sonya Contreras.

Until My Name Is Known begins just after the Lord speaks to Moses in the burning bush and goes through the crossing of the Red Sea. Rather than solely focusing on Moses, Until My Name Is Known also follows several Egyptians and Israelites. I've pretty much always thought of the Exodus through Moses's perspective, so it was nice to get a picture of what other Israelites and the Egyptians may have been thinking. While there are many, many characters in Until My Name Is Known, I never once became confused about who was who—Contreras handled the multiple characters expertly.

The story moves at a fairly rapid pace, and it never got boring. However, I found myself struggling to connect with it, for whatever reason. I was interested in the story, but I wasn't captivated. Still, Until My Name Is Known is a well-written fictionalization of the end of the Israelites' time in Egypt, and I definitely recommend it to fans of Biblical fiction.

I enjoyed reading books that add to my historical knowledge of a subject, and this book did just that! It was very clear that Sonya Contreras has committed tremendous time and energy into the research for her latest book Until My Name is Known. She starts with Moses meeting God at the burning bush and finished when the Israelites cross the Jordan River. The details that Sonya shares with the readers clearly take us deeper into this story which really brings it to life.

Reading through the story of Moses always reminds us of who God is and was and always will be. I found this telling solid and highly accurate. If you enjoy fiction based on history you will enjoy Sonya’s book as well. Reading through the thoughts of Pharaoh and the people all around him and Moses gives great insight into what they might have been thinking, as real people.

I enjoyed this book and look forward to her next book, I Have Called you by Name, book #2 in this series.

TIME: 2450 B.C.

PLACE:Old Kingdom of Egypt

This is a love story between God and His people. God brings the people to him as he gets them ready to leave and escape slavery. But, before they leave, possession of His people is fought between God and Pharaoh. The world's eyes are on God as he frees His people from the bonds of Egypt. He touches many lives.Pharaoh is challenged when Israel's God arrives. He has great power. The people have to change, but some won't and they pay the price. Others do change. This book will show the reader that there is one true God. The book was a fictional account of very real history. The author wrote an interesting book but it rather drug me down with the fact of going over and over the same things. I'm sure a great deal of research went into this book. I just couldn't connect with the characters. They just didn't seem real. They were rather stiff. Everyone has their own opinion so read the book and gather your own opinion.

I would give this book 3 STARS.

On the title page of the copy I received, the author signed the book and wrote, “Read it to see Him!” Reading this incredible story, I did see the way God has worked in history. And I saw his awesome power and his amazing love for his people.
Sonya Contreras has woven together many unique angles of the ancient story, creating a complex, but not confusing, book that many people will enjoy.
The characters are well-developed and unique, and the dialogue is natural. The descriptions are excellent, and the book is very well written. My one caution is that there are some graphic descriptions of violence and medical conditions and procedures. It is not so bad that it will offend the average reader though.
I really enjoyed this book and I give it 5 stars. I highly recommend this book for age 15 and up. I look forward to the next book in the series.

Sonya Contreras crafts an interesting retelling of the biblical account of the Israelites’ exodus from captivity in Egypt in her novel, Until My Name Is Known. Though the overall story will surely be familiar to readers of the Bible, Contreras brings it to life with perspectives from a variety of characters, as well as interesting attention to historical detail and an emphasis on God’s love and pursuit of His people. An novel of biblical fiction, Until My Name Is Known will certainly provide many fans of the genre with a compelling and fascinating read.

I received this book, only 3 days ago and My review was to be posted by yesterday. However this book, is a very hard read. It has way to many characters, and for me, was just all over the place. While I loved the premise of the story (Experience God through Israel’s Exodus from Egypt’s power through those who were there.) (taken directly from Contreras website) found at sonyacontreras.com
You can also find this you tube video on her website that helps to explain and discuss the book

There is extreme research and historical facts in the book. So much so your brain can get on overload, when you try to read it as fast as I did. I will be going back and reading at my leisure and taking the time to soak all of this incredible knowledge in that Sonya Contreras brings to the table with Until My Name is Known. The book includes maps and a very large glossary at the end as well as other research information

In Until My Name Is Known the Almighty sets out to reveal Himself to mankind. He takes both the Egyptians and the Hebrews from “Who is this God, that I should obey?” to “Surely this is the finger of God!” The great I Am clearly unveils His character, but wisely allows each one to choose whether or not they will honor His supremacy. Reading this account helped me step out of modern America into Egypt, 2450 B.C. and brought the Biblical Exodus to life. I think you, like me, will be uniquely compelled to view God through the eyes of the story characters as they stand in awe of His mighty miracles, wonder at His patient persistence, and grapple with questions about fairness and faith. I want to thank the author for the privilege of reviewing her book—I enjoyed it enough that I chose to purchase my own copy rather than accept the complimentary reviewer’s copy.

The story of the Exodus is told from a variety of view points in this novel. In doing so Sonya Contreras allows the reader to see and understand different view points. While we tend to think of just Moses and Pharaoh when we read this story, it involved all of the Hebrew, Egyptians, and other nations as they heard about the things going on. I did feel that perhaps there were too many view points and it created a few too many characters.

Readers will enjoy Sonya Contreras research and attention to details. You will be able to get a better view of ancient Egypt than before and enrich the way you understand that historical time.

I am a huge biblical fiction fan, so when I was asked to review this book I said yes without hesitation.
This is a different take on Moses, Sonya doesn't start at the beginning of his life where he is found floating in the basket of the Nile river, she begins her story after he's killed the Egyptian and has run from Egypt. I've studied Exodus quite a bit as a Bible quizzer as a child and teen, and then I coached quizzing of Exodus as an adult. I found the book interesting like a companion to the book of Exodus as a commentary. Her research is extensive considering the bibliography that she includes at the end of the book. I did enjoy it, I wish it had pulled me in to the point that I didn't want to put it down.

My thoughts:

I really enjoy reading books about the Old Testament and the characters within it. A different perspective on something can make us view things and actions in a whole new light and increase our understanding. The story of Moses contains so much and so does the book of Exodus. I think that this piece of historical biblical fiction has really caused me to rethink and relook at those stories. I really enjoyed it! Definitely a series I’ll be following!

I received a copy of this book from Litfuse in exchange for my review. All thoughts and opinions are my own and not influenced in any way.

Watch God free His people from Egypt's bonds before the watching world. Trace His fingers in the lives He touches.
This book gave me a better understanding of the pain and suffering of the Hebrews in Egypt. The plagues were described so vividly that I could actually visualize them. What a wonderful book, it was exciting while adding to my knowledge of God's power and His glory. I'm looking foreword to the continuing book

This book is the story of Moses and how God worked through him to set his people free. This is a story taken from what some believe could have happened a certain way. The author Sonya Conteras has written it as what could have really taken place from someone who was there to see it. The account is written so that easy to read and understand the people that were involved at the time. The author believes that if you read this you will understand. I give this book a 4/5. I was given this book for a review and these are my opinions.

I was captivated so much by the story that I could not put it down until I was finished reading the whole book! In my experience, I see things from a different perspective when I am not just being told about an era but when I can experience it for myself as I read
