The stories in this collection are very short form or “flash” fiction. The collection is divided in roughly two parts. They are either those which can be considered written for contests or those which were performed as a daily or weekly writing exercise.
Flash Flood: Tales from the Shore by Ed Drury is a flash fiction story collection that were inspired from the Indies Unlimited website started by K.S. Brooks and Stephen Hise as well as Dan Mader's Friday "Two minute challenge." This is a marvelous collaboration. Fine writing with an authentic voice.
I have participated in some of these contests but have never penned a story that shines as much as Ed Drury's. He has great insight and comes from an honest place. His stories are filled with heart, emotion and substance. Some dark and others emotional. They cut like a knife and leave you wanting more. Much more.
Some are so poignant that they gave me chills. You will see for yourself. After reading these pieces, one after the other, I understand why they needed to gathered into a book. So many are realistic where some are full fantasy. They leave you dangling while others have such twists I didn't see them coming. Some are so shocking you have to laugh. I am pleased to have the opportunity to read them all.
Quote from Balloon ~
Janus was woken by a small white dog licking his face. His vision still foggy he examined the small white terrier who was affectionately reviving him. Then the dog spoke:
"Hello friend, that was a close one. You should be okay; I gave you my most healing licks!"
"You speak?"
"Oh sorry, were you expecting 'woof!'?"
"Where are we?"
"Well, it's not Kansas and you don't look like Dorothy."
"Will you lead me home?"
The dog sighed as he spoke, "I can show you the way but I cannot go with you. Would you do me a favor?"
