Life isn't going too well for Yuzuki. She's a 34-years-old and without a boyfriend. The elementary school she works at is close to firing her, and to top it off she doesn't know what to do with her life at all. But even when she quits her job and tries to have an arranged marriage things don't work out. Only the bread she eats at the small stationery store around the corner gives her comfort. So one day, she asks the storeowner to marry her on a whim and to her surprise, he agrees...?
a lovely story honestly, i was quite surprised bc usually the surprise marriage stories are very crazy in a bad way (think hapimari, funny, lots of drama but the character development works BACKWARDS and at some point it gets more frustrating than actually entertaining) but bread and butter starts off real quick and moves kinda quickly too but it doesnt actually feel like it yknow? really having a good time reading abt how their rxshp progresses! the art is also really great, it reminds me a bit of moyoco anno's style
🌸4/5🌸

Cute story with a cute art style. Yuzuki is 34 and unmarried. She's going through a bit of a mid-life crisis, quits her job as an elementary school teacher, and decides to find someone to marry and start a family. She strikes out repeatedly with a dating service but meets an interesting guy running a combination stationery shop and bakery. She proposes to him almost instantly after tasting his food, and surprisingly he agrees. The plot is silly but the characters are cute and I enjoyed it.
Bread and Butter, at least in the first volume, is a mature romance of second chances and baking bread. Yuzuki is a mid-thirties bachelorette questioning her direction in life after burning out on her teaching career. She leaves her career with the goal of becoming a wife, but finds that she doesn’t really know what she wants in a husband. All she knows vaguely is that she wants companionship.
During her search, she meets the reticent Mr. Hara, owner of the local stationary shop and bakery, and a man following his own path toward change. Though the set-up for the story is a bit silly, I enjoyed both of the main characters. I could relate to Yuzuki’s uncertainty about finding the right partner and Mr. Hara’s quiet charm.
Overall it’s a sweet beginning to what seems like a lovely romance. There’s a strong message in the first volume about how mistakes can change you, but not define you.
The premise is really silly, but I think you'll find that this series quickly blossoms into a mature story with characters that feel REAL. I was very surprised by the depth of it all and this grace is extended to side characters too.
The mangaka unfortunately committed suicide in early 2024 and, as such, the chances for an official English translation are slim. Fans have translated roughly half of the series, but it seems there will be very little progress for quite some time. It'll be rough to read the entire series, but I think this is a story that is well worth the effort required.
I will personally be attempting to translate the remaining half of the series on my own, so keep a look out on Mangadex for everything after Chapter 21. :-)
