★★★★1/2! Resist (stand-alone). Journalism graduate in need of a job agrees to be kept by infamous Jax Murphy in hopes of writing his story!

Resist (stand-alone) opens up to college graduate Charlotte Lucas is stressing over finding a job, even after graduating top of her class with a journalism degree. A friend brings to her attention that infamous playboy Jaxon Murphy, Jax is running an advertisement for an assistant/kept woman:

…Successful, attractive male requires a full-time, live in assistant. …If voyeurism and explicit fantasies are likely to offend, do not apply. …I am not looking for a slave, or a submissive. I’m after a challenge.

For years Jax has been cloaked with scandal and mystery, even suspicion, most recently with the disappearance of his girlfriend. With hopes of getting his story she submits her application and lands the job….

Story goes on to follow during Charlotte searching for the truth and lusting after the elusive Jax. But soon she discovers there is much more to Jax’s playboy persona; painful past, coveted secrets and enemies with agendas…

Jaxon Murphy, Jax had me a hello with his sinfully good looks and his kinky and darker side. Ten words to describe Jax: Sinister, depraved, commanding, broken, cynical, enigmatic, elusive, calculated, secretive and vengeful.

Eight words to describe Charlotte Lucas: Sweet, timid, unassuming, determined, meek, smart, focused and loyal.

Resist is the perfect blend of kink, sex, mystery, suspense and romance The ending wrapped everything up, but left me wanting an extended epilogue father into the future.

Complex and oh so swoon-worthy hero! Suspenseful and kinky plot! Excellent storytelling!

I should have known something was wrong when I read this job add in the first 10% of the book...

"Position Open.

Successful, attractive male requires full-time live-in assistant. This is no ordinary position. If voyeurism and explicit fantasies are likely to offend, please do not apply. The successful applicant will be female, attractive and very self-confident.
I am not looking for a slave or a submissive. I'm after a challenge.
Fight me. Resist me and you will be rewarded... "

From then on I tried...I really did but this book just isn't for me. He had to many "assistants" for my tastes and I just couldn't get past some aspects of the story...

Resist by Missy Johnson is mysteriously provocative romance laced with suspense, sex, dark emotional undertones, and raw grittiness. Ms. Johnson takes her readers on a love story that weaves suspense, revenge, and lust as the main objective. While this book is a quick read, I didn’t love this book as much as other books that I have read from this author. But if you are looking for a quick romantic suspense that is brimming with sexual desires and a mysterious hero with a secret waiting to be unraveled then this book is for you. I just wished the unfolding of the secret and epilogue were done in a way that left me satisfied.

This is the story of Charlotte and Jaxon. Jaxon has placed an odd advertisement looking for a woman to satisfy specific needs and Charlotte applies for the job hoping to get a story out of it for her breakthrough in journalism.

The plot wasn't what I was expecting to be honest. I was kind of taken by surprise when I realized how Jaxon felt about the women he employed and how empty felt everything to me. The story is original but depth was missing. The writing was good and enjoyable. The book is written by dual POV and it's interesting to see how Jaxon thinks about everything.

Charlotte is a young intelligent woman. To be honest, I didn't particularly liked her or disliked her. She didn't annoy me but she did nothing to attract my interest. I liked her passion but I dislike her lack of good planning.

Jaxon is a very complex character. I wish there was more of him in the book. I missed the connection with him as he felt cold and distant to me. I start liking him towards the end of the book but it was a bit too late.

The end of the book felt rushed! I don't want to spoil anything and that's why I cannot give you any details. I will just say that it would have been nice to have some more information about everyone before everything was dissolved.

Journalism graduate Charlotte Lucas is still seeking employment but is having difficulty getting a position with no experience or anything to make her stand out other then her grades. Her best freind Jess though send shed a job listing that she thinks will help her get a story that will draw the ontrest of some major papers .

Position Open. Successful, attractive male requires full-time live-in assistant. This is no ordinary position. If voyeurism and explicit fantasies are likely to offend, please do not apply. The successful applicant will be female, attractive, and very self-confident. I am not looking for a slave or a submissive. I’m after a challenge. Fight me. Resist me and you will be rewarded .

The author of this very interesting posting m the billionaire Jaxson Murphy, Jax has a history, orphaned at a young age when his family was murdered in their home and recently he center of a scandal when his girlfreind dissapeared without a trace. Leading t suspicion that he killed her.
To get an inside story on him would be a coo,but at what cost to Charlotte of course that is assuming. She could even get the position and then of course the danger of being exposed and what if he really did kill his last girlfreind.
Well Charlotte does wind up landing the position with the verb sexy, domineering, arrogant reclusive Jaxson and the thought of having sex with him is not so off putting now. Charlotte expects that is what the job is comprised of but it turns out , she is actually put to work as an assistant also and she is not the only live in assistant at his command.
Charlotte is hoping to gain his trust to get her information but aka son is not one to let anyone in, he only winds up being hurt, he may be a domineering and what seems like an unfeeling lover on the outside but to her she gets the occasional glimpse of something else.
Charlotte keeps trying but she is drawn further under his spell , enjoying the sex and complying to his desires and comes to a point were the furthest thing from her mind is the story and more along the lines of wanting Jaxson to only want her!
Does Charlotte get what she wants? Will Jaxson find out her ulterior motive? Will the dominant Jaxson give up his other paid submissives? Will his personal agenda come to fruition? Will Charlotte help him? Can this cold man change ?
I found Resist interesting, though I think that Jaxson was the one doing more resisting than Charlotte !
A D/ S relationship with background intrigue!

I was really excited to pick Resist up because I enjoyed Breaking Noah so very, very much. But this was no Breaking Noah. I just didn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped that I would. That's not to say that I didn't like it ... I did! But again, it was no Breaking Noah.

The book had an interesting concept. This dude (Jaxon) puts an ad out there for basically a booty call. I wouldn't say that it is along the lines of a sex slave but I'll be honest, it was in the gray area between sex slave and booty call. It was closer to sex slave though. Can you imagine seeing that ad and then having the cojones to answer it? I would have quickly marked that one out and then moved on but not Charlotte. She's a gutsy character in a way. She didn't quibble about the choice of filling this position (no pun intended) very much. She seemed pretty spunky at the beginning of this novel and mouthy as hell. I enjoyed how frank and honest she was because it really challenged Jaxon. It created an interesting back and forth between Charlotte and Jaxon that really held my attention and had me excited for future conversations.

I was left feeling a bit ... unresolved about the ending. Don't get me wrong, there was an ending and it was okay but it felt like there was more that should have happened. I have no clue as to what that would have been but I just don't think that the ending really closed off the storyline. That could be because the author is planning on a sequel? I have no clue but there's nothing wrong with more in some instances!

The book didn't play out anything like I thought that it would. There was a suspense aspect to the book that I hadn't known about and because of that, unlike other reviewers, I think that pulls the book out of the erotica genre because it doesn't really deserve to be there. I'm not a massive fan of erotica just because I think that there should be more to a story than just sex. Resist just doesn't fit into that box, I don't think. So if you're on the fence about this book just because of the word erotica being thrown around, you shouldn't be. Bite the bullet and grab this one when it comes out next month.

Charlotte would do anything to catch her big break, even apply to work for Jaxson Murphy, the man assumed to have killed his girlfriend. She knows his past and she's willing to bet there's a story waiting to be told. Being one of his girls may not be her ideal job, but as she gets to know the real Jaxson she's not sure the story is worth losing what they could have.
Jaxson knows there's more to Charlotte than meets the eye and he's willing to bet her can get her to help him with his dirty work. When Charlotte plays his game just as well as he does, he finds that he may want to put revenge aside for something more, something he thought didn't exist anymore.

"Thanks for the advice, but I'll pass on the guys for the moment," I say dryly. "That's fine." She grins. "I'm sure there are plenty of fuckable chicks here too."

Within the first few chapters, I was hooked to the unique plot Missy Johnson offered with Resist. A handsome, wealthy, enigmatic man searching for a woman to be whatever he needs her to be. Charlotte was a feisty character, driven to apply for the position to further her career. I never expected for the job to be what it was, but I loved the dialogue and emotions it brought out between Jaxson and Charlotte. While I loved the push and pull between Jax and Char, I found myself desperate to know more about Jaxson's childhood, his missing girlfriend, and the revenge he was so desperate to see through.

She had a spark, and I can't wait to find out what she's capable of -and what she's capable of putting up with.

While the concept of Resist was unique, there were plot holes and continuity issues I just couldn't ignore. From the sex scenes to the suspenseful story line, several scenes didn't connect with the next and left me a bit confused. At one point Charlotte seemed to have a bit of distaste for her mother and later hated her, with no explanation for the change. I wish Jaxson's girls would have had a lot more detail behind them, because in the end it felt like such a minor detail that I didn't understand why anyone cared or why Jaxson really needed them. Jaxson felt like he was missing something, at times he seemed like an empty shell and other times full of feelings. I couldn't get a true hold on who he was as a character, which made it difficult for me to get behind Charlotte's feelings. While I enjoyed Resist, I felt like the last several chapters, and the closure of Jaxon's past, were rushed through. I also could have gone for a very different epilogue, but that's just me!

She groans, her back arching against my touch. She's practically riding my hand as I pleasure her.

Resist is a dark novel that is a lot sexy, very kinky, and has a hint of suspense and mystery mixed in.

I received an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review and here it is: 2 stars.

This is the first novel I've read by this author and although her writing skills are fairly good, I found very little to like in this book.

Charlotte is a recent college graduate with a degree in journalism but no job. She's 24, unemployed and just dumped her boyfriend of 3 years when she found him cheating on her. One day she reads a rather cryptic ad in which the advertiser is clearly looking for a non-traditional, live-in assistant (aka sex slave). The ad is laden with sexual undertones, and when she discovers that the ad was placed by Jaxon Murphy, a kinky millionaire playboy who is suspected of murdering his last girlfriend, she applies for the position, thinking that if she can get close to him, writing an expose of his lifestyle and possible guilt in his girlfriend's disappearance/murder, the newspapers will be knocking down her door to hire her and get the story. Clearly, she's willing to prostitute herself to make this happen.

Jaxon is clearly an alpha male, and when he interviews Charlotte for the position, he makes it clear that not only will she be at his beck and call as an assistant, she will also be at his beck and call sexually, and that she won't need to wear underwear. Jaxon proceeds to give her little more to do than filing paperwork for a couple of weeks, and it's also clear that he has a small cadre of other women in residence and on the payroll whom he also pays to fulfill his sexual whims.

Quite frankly, I found both main characters and their behavior both lacking in depth and rather offensive. I've read many erotic romances, but although this novel sounds like an erotic romance, I found little eroticism in it. Jaxon is emotionally closed off and aside from some fairly vanilla sex scenes, most of which were of the "wham, bam" variety, he expects submission but doesn't treat Charlotte with as much care as one would expect a dominant to treat a submissive. Beyond that is the mystery of his hostility to Ryan, his business partner, and he sets Charlotte up to go so far as to sleep with man in order to pump him (no pun intended) for information, and Charlotte goes along with this, until she sets off a hotel fire alarm to free herself of having to sleep with the man, and she does so by steaming up the bathroom, which, by the way, in 99.9% of smoke detectors, won't set off a smoke alarm.

By the time this novel finally ends, I suppose with what some would call an HEA ending, I was so sick of the main characters and their odd ethics and morality, that I just didn't care what happened to either of them.

Having read the first 7 chapters of this story previously for another blog and enjoying the story, I was eager to see how the full story would play out so it was a no brainer for me to pick this up.

Much like the first portion of their story that I was able to read, I was just as hooked with the rest and enjoyed how their relationship came to be. How they both seemed to change and care about each other more than their immediate goals at the beginning of the novel.

The love scenes between the two were hot, but surprisingly for me, probably because of all the darker reads that I’ve been a part of lately, I didn’t pull dark and twisted from this, even though Jaxon’s sexual tastes were quite eclectic. It did work for me though and held just the right amount of steam with the position that brings Charlotte to his door to begin with.

What Jaxon was after, his motivation from the start, that definitely hooked me. I found myself wanting to know just what had happened to his parents and what everyone’s roles would be. Also, the truth of what had happened to Jaxon’s ex-girlfriend. All of which was answered in full in the story and in a way where I felt as though it was complete.

The pacing was quick, the flow of the story fast paced and easy to follow for the amount of information that was brought forth in the story and even though it did seem like it all wrapped up a little too quickly at the end (I wanted more in that regard), it did end with a happily ever after for both and a definitive end.

My thanks to the author, NetGalley and all others involved in letting me read a copy of this before its official release. This is definitely an author I will be reading more from in the future.

Resist by Missy Johnson was a book I came across while I was scanning NetGalley. I appreciate a good adult book and this one sounded intriguing. Unfortunately it fell a bit short for me.

I think the biggest challenge for me was the characters. Not a single one in this book had me rooting for them. Charlotte was willing to do anything to get the career she felt she deserved and I just found her to be annoying. Jaxon definitely had something horrible happen to him but outside of that situation, he made it very difficult for me to feel anything for him. I mean…girls living in his house for him to use for whatever he wants??

Outside of the characters, the story is set up to have us find out what is really going on right along with Charlotte. She has inserted herself into a world and situation where she really has no experience so she is just doing whatever she can to stay on Jaxon’s good side. As she is yanked into his world, I found it interesting to see what she was willing to do. With that in mind, there were some things that just didn’t make sense to me. Yes, Jax had all these other women in the house and we really only see one of them in the beginning but I don’t buy that Charlotte was just so captivating that he completely gave up his other needs…considering what we saw of him in the beginning.

Overall this one was just ok for me. The overall mystery and ultimately the end of the book were wrapped up in a way that felt a bit rushed and in the end, the fact that the characters didn’t win me over made it so that I didn’t really have any investment in whether they were able to make it work or not.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.

I received this free eARC novel from NetGalley. This is my honest review.

This was a quick, interesting read. Jaxson and Charlotte are quite the two characters and seeing them interact with each other was fun. Both of them are strong willed and determined in their own ways, so seeing them both learn how to change their ways was a great time of character development. I loved all of the twists and turns that happened with the mystery of the story, and seeing Charlotte be assertive in her wants was really great.

I'm glad I finally got around to reading this!

Meh

With this premise, it should be angsty as fuck. But there’s really very little OW angst. The OW scene right after H meets h is the only on-page and the H doesn’t actually fuck any of the OW after h moves in.

The thriller plot is so convoluted I just stopped trying to follow it and started skimming to get to the end…I still DNF’d.

College graduate and aspiring journalist, Charlotte Lucas, falsely assumed that top grades would garner her a job upon completion of her degree. Unfortunately for Charlotte, breaking into the world of journalism proved harder than she had imagined. At the urging of her best friend, Charlotte applies for a position as live-in assistant to the infamous Jaxon Murphy. Desperate and unemployed, Charlotte hopes to get close enough to the elusive mogul to garner a story that will help launch her journalist career. But there’s a catch… Charlotte’s duties would require her to service her new boss not just in the office, but in the bedroom too!

Jaxon Murphy lives for just one thing—REVENGE. He lives, eats and breathes it. Vowing to avenge the gruesome murders of his family, Jaxon evokes an elaborate plan to bring down his nemesis once and for all. The discovery of his family’s lifeless bodies when he was a teenage boy means that Jaxon’s whole life has been little more than media fodder. Now, following the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend Brynne, Jaxon’s name has (once again) been thrust back into the headlines. Still, nothing can stop Jaxon from finally putting his plan into action. And with the help of an unsuspecting Charlotte, Jaxon intends to do just that.

Jaxon Murphy—a sinfully sexy and potentially dangerous man of power and means—is quite the enigma. He’s complicated and confusing, and often makes Charlotte feel off balanced. Everything she knows about Jaxon tells her that she should fear him. Yet, for some unknown reason, she doesn’t. Charlotte isn’t surprised to learn that Jaxon employees a “harem of women” to cater to his sexual whims, but she is surprised at the feelings that he so easily elicits from her.

A man of unique and distinguishing tastes when it comes to his primal sexual side, Jaxon craves a variety of women to satisfy his basest of desires. So then why is it that Charlotte has him suddenly craving just one? Why does he desire only her? Could he possibly be developing feelings towards Charlotte that extend beyond the bedroom doors?

Charlotte is an integral part of Jaxon’s revenge plan, so despite his increasing desire for Charlotte, he needs to push those feelings aside in lieu of his craving for revenge. The push and pull between them is evident, though both try to convince themselves otherwise.

While Jaxon was busy planning and scheming, he had naively and uncharacteristically turned a blind eye to Charlotte’s background. Charlotte knew that her deception would eventually be divulged—it was inevitable. Yet Jaxon’s reaction to that betrayal could not so easily be gauged. What Charlotte feared most is that Jaxon’s reaction could very well become volatile. And if that did happen, what exactly did that mean for Charlotte? What did it mean for the two of them?

Although interesting in concept, I did find the premise a bit far-fetched. Although I have no doubt that there are aspiring journalists that would sell their soul for an exclusive story, how many of them are intelligent young women who would willingly sell their body for the mere possibility of one? My guess is not many—my hope would be none.

Nevertheless, I do love a good alpha male love story and “Resist” certainly fit the bill! I found the story interesting, intriguing and definitely a bit naughty!! But while Charlotte and Jaxon’s story was wrapped up nicely in the end, by the time I reached the last page, I actually found myself craving more. I can only hope that this is not the last we’ll see of Charlotte and Jaxon, but merely just the beginning.

So many different thoughts on this book....but in the end the book was just okay.

Charlotte is a struggling college graduate, who with a degree in journalism is struggling to find a job and to find herself following the break up with her long term boyfriend.

Jaxon is a wealthy man with a trauma filled past, including being investigated and charged with the death of his girlfriend. He has very specific sexual needs, but has no desire for a relationship and doesn't want to go through the trouble of finding a woman in a bar for a one night stand. Instead he employs several women, who live in his mansion to meet his needs at any given time.

Charlotte's friend, knowing how desperate she is for a job, forwards her an add that Jaxon put out on a large, popular job hunting website essentially searching for his newest sex partner. The friend convinces Charlotte to apply for the position so she can get close to Jaxon to write a story about him which will set her career off.

So this is where a few things bothered me about this book. First off, you can't advertise a sex job on a website. The author has the ad so obvious that there is no thought that the position being applied for involves sex. Charlotte applies for the job, is granted an interview and is hired on the spot. She has no reservations about having sex with a complete stranger, about living with him, about the fact that she will share him with other women....nothing. She simply accepts the offer so she has a chance to further her career. If Charlotte had been portrayed as a woman who enjoyed casual sex (as her friend did) her quick decision would have been understood. However, Charlotte just ended a three year relationship with a man she had thought would eventually propose to her.

There is no paperwork discussed; this tremendously private man, doesn't have any of these women sign Non Disclosure Agreements or any other legal document preventing them from discussing what goes on in his mansion with the press. This doesn't make sense for a man who the author wants you to believe values his privacy so much that he hasn't granted the press any interview.

The truth about Jaxon's girlfriend's disappearance was a let down; I expected more behind it. The secret she was protecting is never revealed. It's also not entirely clear what Ryan had to gain by his role in the disappearance.

Charlotte's ex boyfriend is discussed in the beginning of the book, but never mentioned again. I would expect after finding her boyfriend cheating on her, that Charlotte would have difficulty trusting anyone especially Jaxon who is paying multiple women to be at his beck and call. She's jealous at times, but seems to fully trust him which doesn't fit with her past.

It's not a bad book overall, but I think it could have been better.

Review:
“I can make out his shadow in front of me. My breathing is erratic as I wait for him to begin. He’s so mysterious and closed off that I never know what he’s thinking, and that’s part of what makes him so fing attractive.”

4 restrain me stars!! Super sexy game of cat and mouse!

Charlotte didn’t know what she was getting into when she responded to a sexy want ad. But when she finds out, she quickly realizes she’s in over her head. Jaxon is the man she meets and he has a dark past but don’t believe everything you’ve heard about him. When he meets Char (he already knows a lot about her beforehand), he knows he wants to make this super good girl go bad. Can she resist the sexy mogul?

This story started as a Slow simmer start and ended with a rolling boil!

When Charlotte reads a classified ad in the newspaper she is hesitant at first but being a recent college graduate that is having difficulties finding a position as a journalist she knows she has to go for it, this could be the break she's looking for.
Position Open:
Successful, attractive male requires a full-time, live in assistant. This is no ordinary position. If voyeurism and explicit fantasies are likely to offend, do not apply. The successful applicant will be female, attractive, and very self-confident.
I am not looking for a slave, or a submissive. I’m after a challenge.
Fight me. Resist me and you will be rewarded...

Little does she know that this position could be the end of her as well.

Jaxson and Charlotte have great chemistry, Jaxson's take charge (domineering) attitude and Charlotte's willingness to submit to him make for a great time in the bedroom, office, rooftop, dining room and anywhere else Jaxson decides to lay her out and take her.

Can Charlotte get the story of a lifetime or will her true identity be found out?

Who's Resisting Whom?

*Sigh* Perhaps my first question should rather be: Why was the novella titled "Resist"? The story has an interesting enough trope...dark and reclusive wealthy bachelor with kinkier proclivities meet the somewhat fresh-faced ingenue ready to begin her journalism career with exposé of said bachelor's secrets.
When all is said and done the reader can find a reasonable measure of entertainment in this book. However for the reader who needs more than entertainment, there are a few things that are a little off pitch in the story. I'm afraid this tips too far into darker realms for the regular romance reader, yet not far enough psychologically or erotically for the reader who looks for the light in the darkest, hottest erotica. This was sort of lukewarm.
Personally, the characters were written in the beginning like clichés. As the story went on, I did not understand their development, motivations or actions. They read like the author read about how they should behave and then wrote them from halfway understanding the behavior about which she read.
I suppose what I am trying to say is they didn't seem to live in the author's mind and therefore how could she write them so that they would come alive in my mind? I had a difficult time trying to picture the look and movement of our Alpha male and the heroine seemed equally difficult to comprehend.
My last observation is the sex seemed rushed, not too terribly dark and erotic. During each sexual encounter, I believe the characters may have exchanged maybe one sentence of the beloved "dirty talk" that enhances the experience for thecharacters...and of course the readers as well.
If I offend your sensibilities with this review then simply put the blame on me. I so hate to say anything negative about a book. This is of course is only my opinion. Value it whatever way you will. I did say the book entertains just does not seem to offer an authentic glimpse into the worlds in which deep dark romance lives and the brilliant light found in this darkness. I rated it 3.5 stars. Out of respect of the author's efforts I always round up.

Resist by Missy Johnson was a great read and real page turner. It will have you wondering what will happen next while turning the pages. Missy did a great job with each character. It has mystery, passion, suspense and great sexy love scenes. I wish the ending it could have given us more since it left me yearning for more !!!

Jaxon Murphy is a successful CEO willing to do anything in his power to bring down and destroy the person responsible for the death of his family. He lives his life only for revenge after losing everyone he has loved and to top it off he has major trust issues after vicious accusations on his name had been made.

While the hardened Jaxon is trying to find retribution he also can't seem to help but fall for this strong, brave beautiful woman. What happens when secrets are revealed though ? Will these two strike a deal amongst themselves and what happens when things start getting real ?

Recent college grad Charlotte Lucas thinks she has found her breakout story. It all begins when she answers a provocative want ad posted by a secretive mogul who happens to be a prime suspect in his girlfriend’s disappearance. Young and inexperienced, Char has never been pushed to the limit—until their games take her to the very edge. Char has gone in looking for the truth, but now she’s in way too deep with a master who plays her body like it belongs to him.

Jaxon Murphy knows a lot more about Char than he lets on. Although the media has made him out to be a monster, he’s not about to come clean about his tormented past—at least not before he turns this good girl bad and sends her out to do his dirty work. After all, Jax didn’t make it to the top without breaking some rules. But as their play grows passionate and achingly real, Jax can’t resist taking a shot at something that’s bigger and more powerful than revenge: love.

Review:

This certainly was provocative, edgy like other reviews have said, but had a lot of questionable actions by the main characters. I liked Char, thought her character was interesting and how she is ready to do some seedy things to get ahead in her career. I understand her and her motivations. Jaxon, I had a really hard time with. I did not find him all that likable and he really treated people terribly and I had a hard time coming back from that. Theirs is a super complicated relationship that at times made me cringe a little. I liked the idea behind the story, that his family is killed and he does what he can to bring the killer to justice, but man the way he uses people was again a little rough for me. There is of course the mystery of what happened to his family and a romance, both were okay. I think there was a lot of build up to the end of the story and then rush, rush to end it. Though this was just an okay book for me, I would definitely try another of this Author's stories.

RESIST by Missy Johnson was a book that was just to hard to resist reading, look at the cover page alone, it catches your eye and sucks you in to make you want to read it, that's what it was for me, the beautiful cover page.

The story in this book is very well written and very well developed, the plot of this book is very well developed and its fast paced, never a dull moment in this book, there are so many twists and turns going on that you will never know whether you are coming or going. The characters in this book they really stand out and make you want to take their ride along with them, and the chemistry between Charlotte and Jaxon, its so hot the pages on your kindle will be melting.

This book is about Charlotte, she is fresh out of school and looking for work, how hard should it be to find a job in journalism. Weeks of looking finds Charlotte with no job prospects, not even at the paper where she did an internship, so when one of her best friends sends her a link to a job for the one and only Jaxon Murphy for what appears to be a "personal assistants" job, she applies for it, knowing what the job entails. Why you ask would she apply for the job, Charlotte sees it as a way to get the big story that will help to make her name in the journalism world and give her the break she needs to find a real job in her field. What Charlotte does not count on is the way Jaxon makes her feel, and the things he makes her want to do during sex, but who is Jaxon Murphy, what's his story, what is he hiding from everyone?

RESIST by Missy Johnson was my first read by this author and from I can tell, this is the first book in a series of books and I have to say I will be waiting for the next book in the series to come out. I would give RESIST 4/5 stars.

I received an advanced copy of this book for the publisher through NetGalley for an honest review.

This book was a pretty fast read as it involved a complicated story line. With that said, the story is told from a dual POV which helped me as a reader understand where the characters were coming from. Charlotte and Jaxon otherwise would not have been that easy to connect with but we were able to get into both of their minds. Charlotte was the heroine that went to live with Jaxon under a deception and the story takes off from that point. "Not only is this a potentially life-changing story, but I need to find out what his deal is." " If I am offered the job and I decide to take it, there is going to be sex."

Jaxon's past is a big question mark throughout the book and kept the pages turning. I wouldn't say this was an instant love story but definitely had an immediate attraction between the two main characters. He also has a few women living with him which makes you wonder how Charlotte will fit into the mix. "Currently I employ five women to take care of my needs. Each girl meets a specific need, and whom I desire and when depends greatly on my mood." Hmmm.... I'm sure there are a few readers that wonder if there is cheating that occurs in this book and I will admit that this is a limit for me. I don't want to give away any spoilers but will share that I was fine with how this part of the story was handled.

This author can write some hot scenes though which helped make a connection between the main characters. I would recommend this story if you're a fan of Missy Johnson and feel like a quick romance read between a longer books.Missy JohnsonResist

Review can be read at It's About The Book

Resist is a romance by Missy Johnson, who’s a new author to me. The story arc was somewhat like Grey in that it was a very wealthy man who hired women to fill his needs, minus the heavy BDSM that surrounded that story. The alpha/dominant male character also had a damaged past, but in this story he’s still got an arch enemy he’s seeking revenge on. Charlotte becomes enmeshed in his end game strategy and is pivotal in setting Ryan up for destruction. So, in this book the difference is that it leans more heavily on the revenge narrative than the actual sexual relationship, which I found I really appreciated.

Charlotte has a brand new journalism degree but even being top of her graduating class hasn’t helped her find a job in the field. When an assistant job notice comes from a friend, she hesitates. It’s for Jaxon Murphy, who had been the subject of an investigation about his missing girlfriend Brynne the year before. Everyone nationwide had followed the sensational story and public perception tended to lean into the guilty column. Taking a position with a suspected killer is one thing; but for a wannabe journalist, it’s like catnip. What if she could solve the mystery of what had happened? She’d be in a great position to snoop through his stuff if she was working and living on the grounds of his estate.

But Jaxon is always suspicious and even though he’s crazy attracted to Charlotte he’s been burned before. Will he be able to remain aloof to her charms while being in constant contact with her? And will being distracted by his feelings cause him to screw up his long-planned revenge?

Interesting fast and sexy read that ratchets up the suspense until the climactic end. Thanks!

Charlotte is a recent graduate in journalism and can’t find a job. She’s just walked in on her long term boyfriend cheating on her and she’s sort of fed up and lost with what she wants to do. When her best friend sees an advertisement for a guy looking for live in sex assistant, Char’s curiosity is piqued. Jaxon is rumored to have killed his missing girlfriend. Is there a story here? Could this experience make her career or will she end up getting hurt in the end?

I had a hard time with Jaxon. He was pretty despicable and everything he would do, I kept thinking…why am I reading this? I do read dark reads at times but I just didn’t understand how his character would be redeemed. With all of the secrets revealed, I eventually did end up liking the book in the end. I’m still not 100% Team Jaxon and probably will not throw him a party, but it definitely was an interesting read and had a few surprises. I know my emotions were all over the place especially at the beginning.

If you are looking for something different to read, this will definitely fill the bill. I kept moving forward to figure out what motives these characters had because at times, I was at a loss. It finally made sense in the end.

3.5 stars for this stand-alone romantic thriller. This book was originally slated as a serial before it was revamped and I had read the first seven chapters over a year ago so I reintroduced myself to the characters / circumstances and was not disappointed in the least.

Charlotte Lucas is a recent college grad with a shiny new degree in journalism but as she soon found out working in southern California with zero experience in the field will get you zero call backs. Needless to say Charlotte is jobless and then out of no where her long term boyfriend decides cheating on her would be a good thing...as if things could've got any worse. Char is on the hunt for a job when she comes across an add for an assistant's position to an attractive male that requires a bit of a fiery personality. Intrigued by the ad she decides to apply within and life as she knows it will never be the same...

Jaxon Murphy is a billionaire who's family died under very suspicious circumstances. Then not too long ago his long time girlfriend disappeared without a trace and she is presumed dead. Jaxon knows he has darkness and chaos surrounding him but all he wants is justice for what happened to his family. Jaxon does not want any love or relationships he went that route and got burned so he now uses multiple assistants that see to his need/demands. When his latest applicant walks in he feels something different and that should have told him not to hire her but as the saying goes hindsight is 20/20...

While I enjoyed this book very much at times it did feel rushed. There was so much good writing packed into the pages I just wish it would've been a bit longer. Otherwise it was a quick, sexy and intriguing read that I finished in a day :)

Intriguing and Dark

I was hooked from the start. Certainly, the want ad Charlotte Lucas had answered was the carrot to read further. I had to find out more in this intriguing plot. Newly graduated from college, Charlotte can’t seem to find a job with her journalism degree, and learns from her friend that the elusive millionaire Jaxon Murphy has placed an advertisement for a personal assistant who will fill his kinky needs. Sniffing out a possible story that may advance her career, she interviews for the job.

Enigmatic best describes Jaxon Murphy. He is unapologetic about his desires, he’s cynical and vengeful. He’s become a man consumed by his past and the reader is soon led down the rabbit hole to learn the darkness that surrounds Jaxon’s harsh and impersonal manner. I get how he’s broken, betrayed and twisted with guilt, but I found him unlikable because of how cold and selfish he seemed with how he treated everyone around him. I didn’t see his character change much towards the end of the story. And I was just confused how Charlotte thought she could be in love with him. Jaxon did nothing to encourage kindness or tenderness in this relationship, so it definitely felt one-sided. Though the sex was hot, I wasn’t convinced the connection between Charlotte and Jaxon believable.

Resist is a blend of steamy, suspense and mystery, and I really wanted to love it. But the ending came fast and wrapped up too neatly, and left me with some unanswered questions. I enjoyed Ms Johnson’s writing style and hope to find more of her books.
