The opening chapter (Fantastic Four) and the closing chapter (Guardians of the Galaxy) are thoughtful and fun and creative. In between? Not so much. The Spider-man doesn't even belong in this collection.
To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Marvel, a 100th anniversary edition is produced set 47 years in the future (!?)
FF is set in that period with suitably aged cast, Spider-Man might as well be set today but as part 8 of an imaginary story (it's not a great payoff for a 22 page story, let alone an 8 episode storyline), Cyclops is president in an alternate reality, there's a wacky Avengers story (and the only story to really grasp the 47 years in the future) and the Guardians of the Galaxy fight Galactus.
I don't really understand the point. And none of the stories are any good.
I don't even know what to say about this other than it's bad. If this is where the Marvel Universe stories are heading in 25 years, I'll be passing. Maybe if there was some sort of overall arc told throughout the five titles it would have been a little better, but we're basically dropped into the middle of "existing" story arcs, and not a single one of them read as something that I wish I could read the entire arc over.
Unless you are a really hardcore Marvel reader, I'd say that this could be easily ignored.
As a stunt it is an interesting idea, what does Marvel look like in 2061.
But in the end it feels like another stunt, Amalgam, where readers are dropped into stories that are already started. And the Avengers story and art is totally not to my taste.
Basicaly if they had united the five issues into one story the stunt would have done a much better job succedding.
I enjoyed this. Random hypothetical bits of stories Marvel could have on its 100th anniversary. The stories are easier to follow if you're familiar enough with the characters and types of stories they tend to have. This seems mostly aimed at avid comic readers who might get a kick out of the what if storylines. I liked brain-in-a-jar Tony Stark, and Silver Galactus, and Kingpin symbiote, and Cyclops the President. Fun stuff. Not fully fleshed out but that's fine because these aren't supposed to be elaborate stories anyway.
Ugh. Completely pointless. These comics are mediocre when taken singly, but they serve absolutely no purpose....if Marvel was going to do something like this, they could at least have had some common thread running through all of the titles. This is just a waste of time.
This was a quick look at what happens on the 100th anniversary of the marvel family of hero's once they get there. A strange combo of the old and future. Not really what I expected.
The Avengers part deserves 5 stars, because it is unique and innovative with full of mind-blowing ideas and a characteristic style. For the rest... well, they are okay, but nothing special, really. The whole concept of these comic issues are that they are "from the future". Yet for the other 4 comics, there is nothing that would distinguish them from the current titles, style or content. Scott Summers as the President is a fun idea, but not something that we could not read in today's comics. In fact, it is a neat idea that can be a basis of a good storyline, provided there is enough room to fully elaborate it. The others came across as weak-to-average What If? stories.
I nevertheless recommend the Avengers special, though.
James Stokoe's trippy Avengers story rises head and shoulders above the rest in this odd experiment. On paper, jumping into the middle of a story supposedly written 45ish years in the future seems like a good idea, but in reality it's just confusing and frustrating to only get part of the story. Like when you pick up a stack of comics at a garage sale and none of them are in consecutive order.
Being honest, my only issue with this specials was the fact that they weren't actually series, just one-shots without and actual exposition, only conclusion, otherwise they were pretty interesting future perspective from Marvel's most popular characters.
