Born in Philadelphia, Paul Langan spent his early childhood in the city before moving with his single mother to southern New Jersey. There he attended public school and worked a variety of jobs—including salesperson at a shoe store, attendant at a horse ranch, landscaper at a mental hospital, and a night-shift stockperson in a warehouse store near Atlantic City. “Each job,” he says today, “could be the topic of several juicy novels.”

In 1991, he enrolled at Camden County College and a year later transferred to La Salle University, where he studied creative writing and literature, earning a B.A. in English. While at La Salle, he lived with international students, traveled to his roommate’s home in Kenya, became a prison tutor, and found “the courage” to write.

After graduation, he worked for a nonprofit agency in Philadelphia and then joined Townsend Press (TP) as an Assistant Editor. After he contributed to a number of TP textbooks and taught English at a community college, Paul reconnected to his interests in creative writing through the Bluford Series. Originally working as an assistant with the Bluford novels, Paul’s role steadily grew. He now serves as both editor of the series and author or coauthor of several novels, including The Bully, The Gun, and The Fallen. His stories reflect his personal experiences, including the difficulties of growing up without a father, being the “new kid” in school, and dealing with the loss of a loved one.

In 2001, Paul completed a Master’s degree in Education from the University of Pennsylvania. In addition to expanding the Bluford Series, he dreams of writing a successful movie script, preferably a “supernatural thriller.” Today Paul lives with his wife and three children near Philadelphia and stubbornly clings to the hope that he will one day see the Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl.

This book was wonderful. Its about the struggle Darcy had to go through after Hakeem has left. After her grandmother has died its summer again and all the secrets start building up. Darcy had almost been raped by Brian and now is trying to put in her past she gets a job working in an ice cream restaurant to have something to do to pass the slow summer. Jamee began going out with Cooper's brother and Darcy did not like that because for one her boyfriend moved away after his father was diagnosis and Darcy was left lonely during the summer. Jamee was confused because she did not know why Darcy was acting like that because for one Cooper was one of Darcy's best friends due to this conflict it added to more tension in the house. Then there was also trouble in the house because of secrets between Darcy's mother and father. After the summer is about to come to a close Darcy's ex friend shows up bringing more secrets for Darcy to endure. At the end things have a way of working out but you need to read the book in order to find that out .

Summer of Secrets is the book I read written by Paul Langan. Highschool. The characters in this book are Darcy Wills, Brisana, Duane Nye, Cooper, Tarah, Jamee Wills, Carl Wills, Darcy's mom, and Jamee's boyfriend. This book is about all of these teenagers that go to Bluford Highschool. In this book, all of them were in thier summer break. Darcy had just said good bye to Hakeem her boyfriend that moved to Detroit. That summer Darcy had started to work at Scoop an ice cream shop. Brisana was Draacy's friend for a long time except that summer Darcy had noticed that Brisana had changed a lot. One day, when Darcy was workin her daily shift a girl came in to the shop with this very flashy dude his name was Duane Nye. Darcy had noticed Brisana had changed because of what she was wearing. Brisana would have never worn the clothes that Darcy was seeing her in. Anyway, all throughout that summer Darcy saw Brisana with that boy. Brisana started wearing very provacative clothes and also very uncovered clothes. One day, Tarah, Darcy, Cooper, and Tarah's cousin Troy were going to meet up at the park for The Fourth of July. When they met up, it was only Troy, Tarah, and Darcy. Then Cooper came late because he had problems with his bosses boy. Then Cooper got in a fight with Duane because that was his bosses boy. After that day, Brisana told Darcy that she thought she was pregnant. When Darcy found out, she took her to the medical center and at the end they found out that she wasn't pregnant. There summer was full of surprises!

What made this book unique, was that it can relate to alot of teenage girls and to alot of teenage boys. I can connect to this book because, a lot of girls go through what Brisana went through and a lot of the problems are similar to the problems we have in real life. What i thought the purpose of this book was, was to connect with us and sort of teach us what can happen if your not smart enough and say no to something that you know is wrong. The other purpose i think this book was written is so this book can warn us and helps us understand those problems.

This book was alomost like a mystery because when you thought somethging was happening it really wasnt happening to that person it happened to a different person. What I am trying to say is Darcy is 16 in high school and she has a problem she doesnt tell anyone about except for her family. Her secret is that she almost got raped by a boy named Brian when her boyfriend Hakeen left for Detroit. Darcy's old friend Brisana is acting different and has changed her appearance. When Darcy see's that Brisana's boyfriend Duane is no good she tries to tell her but wont believe her. Now Brisana thinks she is pregnant. So Darcy arranges a appointment wih a doctor and it turns out Brisana isnt pregnant. Darcy's parents have been arguing and keeping secrets from her and her little sister Jamee. The secret was that their mom was pregnant and she didnt want to tell them because she thought she couldnt handle mopre children...But she will keep the baby.

This book is about a girl who's parents are seperated. The girl is living a tough life because her mother's boyfriend is a aboiuser. He hits on the girl and her mom whenever he is upset. Most of the times hes upset because of a rough day at work. The girl has an internal conflict. Which is, should she run away because her mom is to scared to leave her boyfriend, or fight back and stay living with her mommy.
I can connect to this book sort of because my parents are seperated. But my mother's boyfriend she just met is not obousive like the main characters mothers boyfriend is.
I would give this book a 4 because, in a way that it is scary and sad at the same time. I recommened this book to kids who love to listen to people getting beat. Harsh people like that is perfect for this book.

This book is about a girl named Darcy who is looking for refuge. She is trying to cope with the loss of her grandmother and the effect of almost being raped by a guy she thought she knew. She bottled everything inside and told her her friends and family secrets until she finaly had enough of hiding her feelings and told them. She let them know why she has become this different person and why she's always on the edge. I loved how this had tons of suspenseful moments tha kept me wanting to read more. This is a book that teenage girls can relate to because of the situations that not only Darcy put herself in, but all the other characters put themselves in as well. If you like or even love books with drama and suspense I recommend you read this book!

In "Summer of Secrets" by Paul Langan, its about a teenager named Darcy who's grandma dies and has to deal with her parents fighting. Since its summer vacation, Darcy gets a job in an ice-cream shop so that she can earn money for her self. Darcy is worried because of different things that are going on in her life. Her younger sister, Jaimee, is going out with her friend, Cooper, her parents are fighting, and her grandma has just died. But most of all, she is afraid and has nightmares because of a guy named ,Brain, who tried to rape her before summer vacation, but her dad came in before Brian did anything. Since her parents are fighting, they don't notice how she feels, and Darcy hasn't told anyone about what had happened, except for her parents.
Then she sees her old friend, Brisana, and she tries telling her that she shouldn't be going out with Duane, since Brisana tried warning her about Brian. But then later on Brisana comes to Darcy and tells her that she might be pregnant, and that Duane doesn't want anything to do with the baby. Brisana is worried and Darcy tells her that she will ask her friend, Tarah, for help. At first Brisana doesn't want her help but then she says that its okay. Then one night her parents tell both Darcy and Jaimee that they will have a new baby in the house and everyone is happy. The next day she and Brisana go to the clinc, where Tarah told them, and they found out that Brisana wasn't pregnant, but that she should protect herself. Then she knows that over time, she will get better, and that she will not be scared of Brian, not that much.
My critique of this book is that I realy enjoyed reading this book because it was an interesting book on a teenager. I would give this book 5 stars out of 5 because it was on a teenager who was facing a challenge and it showed how she dealed with it. I enjoyed this book because the main character, Darcy, faces many problems, and has trouble facing them, and she also helps her friend out when she is in trouble.

In Summer of secrets by Paul Langan, there is a lot of exciting points where it may seem like foreshadowing. Darcy is a young girl around 16 or so, who is dealing with a secret that could change the way she will be for the rest of her life. Jamee is Darcy’s young sister who tries to figure out what’s going on .Tarah, is Darcy’s best friend who talks to Darcy and tried to help when she can.Brisana, is Darcy’s old friend who has a secret of her own and comes to Darcy for help. Like when one of the secrets are about to be revealed, but something happens all of a sudden and things go to a totally different topic. This book goes on a rampage of the many different scenes going on with Darcy and her friends and also family, over a summer break. Darcy’s friends become closer after her grandmothers resent death.
If I could rate this book on a scale of 1-10 I would rate it as 5.5-6 .I say this because in points the story would be going on and on about something that’s not even appealing anymore. This book is a great book to read if you enjoy something intriguing and that maybe some teens around that age can compare to. Over this entire book has a good ending, not quite what I expected but a good ending. It ended as if there were more to it, they meet Tarah after she helped Brisana out with her little secret and they ended up letting all the secrets out and got along without being enemies. If there would be one thing I would change it would be the foreshadowing I would make it more suspenseful so it doesn’t loose the reader attention as much as it did mine.

Darcy's life is yet again stressful, the memories and fears from her assault plaguing her as her family seems to disintegrate before her eyes. She manages to work through this stress by helping her friend through a difficult problem, as well. I was struck by how one theme can be so effectively carried through these books -- we must share our problems before they consume us from the inside.

Personal Response

I enjoyed this book, but it was kind of drawn out and dramatic. It was pretty similar to Shattered. This book went more in depth on Darcy's problems and inner feelings. It focused on her and her life. The book was overall decent. It wasn't a long book, and I felt like it could have been a lot longer.

Plot

Darcy’s grandma passed away in her sleep and it was hard for the family. Darcy had a hard time telling people others things about her life, even family. During the summer her ex boyfriend Hakeem, moved far away and Darcy liked this other guy. They ended up hanging out and the guy took it too far by trying to take advantage of her. Darcy and her sister went to the hospital because her sister thought she was pregnant. Although she ended up not being pregnant, her mom was.

Characterization

Darcy was the main character of this story. Most of the conflicts revolved around Darcy and were the main part of the story line. Darcy’s sister was Jamee, the one who thought she was pregnant and a bit of a rebel child. Darcy’s parents were always arguing and having issues with their marriage.

Setting

The setting of this story was in the area of Bluford High. The story mostly took place at Darcy’s home or out on the streets with her friends. The time period this story took place was present day. Bluford High is the most important because this is where most of the dramatic issues are. Darcy’s home is also important because that is where most of the conflicts took place.

Thematic Connection

The moral of this story was that everyone does have their secrets, but there are some secrets that someone can't keep from their parents or friends. When a person tells someone else close what's going on, it can make everything better. Darcy kept the Brian issue a secret until she told her mom. She then felt better and told her friends. A person can only hold everything inside for so long without blowing up.

Recommendation

I recommend this book to all ages starting at the middle school level. This book isn't really a good read for guys because it's about a girl and her secrets. It's most dramatic, and I feel like a lot of guys don't care about the drama. The book wasn't bad. Which is why I would recommend it to middle school and high school students.

I read Summer of Secrets in about a week and understood what the book was about. It's basically about a girl named Darcy,a sophomore, who started off her summer in bad way since her grandmother who lived with them passed away recently. Darcy began to notice that her mother and father aren't getting along and she knew that there was something that was bothering her mom, other than the fact that her grandmother died. Darcy is the type of person that make situations big and likes to know about it. On the other hand, her sister, Jamee, likes to play off everything and hide from tragedies or problems. Her friend Tarah tried to tell her that it was fine, but she wouldn’t listen. Tarah was the type to understand problems and help people out when they are in need of support.

Darcy's boyfriend, Hakeem, who she loved, traveled from California and moved to another state, which made her even more depressed. So when he left, she got with another guy, Brian, until she figured out that he tried to rape her. As he tried, Darcy's father came and saved her. Darcy had a friend named Brisanna, who she knew from long time ago before boys began to steal her mind. Brisanna warned Darcy that Brian was a “playboy” and that she should stay away from him. But Darcy didn’t listen to her then regretted her mistakes. So when Darcy saw Brisanna with a college student who made her dress badly, she knew that she had to warn her about him and that she had to do something. So she told her, but she ignored Darcy, just like the way she did. So one day, Brisanna came up to Darcy and told her that she needed her to support her and not tell anyone about what she did. She told her that she might have been pregnant from the college student. So she tried to comfort her and tell her that she had a friend who worked at the Women’s Nursing Center. Tarah did her best to help her friends out. So they all went and realized that she wasn’t pregnant after all. She was just really stressed out. The reason I liked the book was because it was from a third person's point of view and that helped me realize that everyone had their own specific feelings about a certain topic.

I loved this book. This book was filled with real life experiences of teenagers and the fears they have at times. Darcy is a teenager that goes through many life experiences through her summer. Her boyfriend Hakeem has moved to Detroit because his dad has cancer and Detroit has the best cancer treatment. She is left feeling lonely and decides to date a boy named Brian who then almost rapes her. This gives Darcy many problems, she is scared of boys even if they just speak to her. She hides this from her family but eventually towards the end gets help. One of her BFF's thinks she is pregnant and has to go to a clinic and finds out that she is not but then is given a lesson on how NOT to get pregnant. Her other BFF has a great relationship with her boyfriend but he is having a problem at work with his boss's son and eventually gets in a fight with him at a 4th of July celebration. All the while Darcy thinks her parents are going to have to go through another split in their relationship but finds out all the worrying is not necessary because her mother is pregnant. This shocks everyone but for some reason it brings their family closer together.

This book would be good for any teenager for Hi-Low readers. It is an African American book that gives a purpose. A great read, I plan on reading more Bluford Series books!

Summer of Secrets is a book that is by Paul Langan. It's about a girl named Darcy. During the summer, many problems start coming and many secrets are hidden. Darcy's grandma had died three weeks ago from a stroke and her family has been falling apart since then. Her mother and father had been arguing alot also, and her parents didn't seem to notice Darcy's troubles. Darcy wants to tell her friends about her problems at home but she found that one of her old friends had an even bigger problem than she did. Her old friend, Brisana, thought she was pregnant and Brisana turned to Darcy for help. Darcy then has to help her friend and also stand up for herself.

This book is one of the few book that i can understand more. This is also a book that I read quickly and couldn't stop reading. I think some people can relate to the story if they have problems at home with their family or friends. I also think Darcy was nice to help an old friend when she needed her even though her friend started to act like Darcy was invisible.

Darcy was lived in a place where are secrets all around. there are from their parents, friends and siblings. Keeping all those secrets made her became nut. Also, no one was listen to her. Parents were arguing all day, best friend was dated with a " play boy", sister was dating with other. Also, she was got hurt by a crazy boy " Brian." One theme i found in this book is trust. Darcy's friend Brisana thought she was pregnanted, the only one she could feel free to talk to is Darcy. And Darcy helped her to go to the docter to check and finally is negative. I think trust might be significant in our society. Everyone should had at least trust one person and tell them how you feel, what you do. Without trust, you have no confidant to tell anyone your feeling and no one will know what you really want. In order to please yourself and others, you have to open your heart and let other to observe whats inside your heart!

I think this book wasn’t that good of a book, because it was about a girl.

At the beginning of the book Darcy Wills, the main character, needs help. A frightening ordeal at the end of the school year has turned her world upside down. Her parents, distracted by problems at home, don't seem to notice her troubles. With her ex-boyfriend miles away in Detroit and her beloved grandmother gone, Darcy is more alone than ever. Unable to deny the painful truth she's been hiding, Darcy turns to her remaining friends only to discover one of them has an even bigger secret. Now, forced into a crisis beyond her control, Darcy must take a stand for herself and for her friend.

I would recommend this book to girls in high school and in middle school. I don’t think guys in high school or in middle school wouldn’t like this book that much, because it is about a girl.

Darcy wills and her 14 year old sister Jamee are going through some tough times right now.Between her grandmother passing away, her parents fighting what seems like everyday now, and meeting her long lost best friend for the first time in 5 years Darcy and her sister have no Idea what the future holds for them.Darcy is felling stressed and when I was reading this book and made feel sad for her because she is trying to do the best that she can for her and her sister. Jamee is very responsible but at the same time she is to the point where she doesn't really care anymore but in the book you can tell that she is not that happy anymore with the fact that her parents are always bickering at each other.
