शेखर : एक जीवनी’ अज्ञेय का सबसे अधिक पढ़ा गया उपन्यास; हिन्दी की एक ऐसी कथा-कृति जिसे हर पीढ़ी का पाठक जरूरी समझता आया है और जिससे गुजरने के बाद वह जीवन की एक भरी-पूरी छलछलाती नदी में डूबकर निकल आने जैसा अनुभव करता है। उपन्यास का नायक शेखर स्वयं अज्ञेय हैं अथवा कोई और व्यक्ति, यह हमेशा कौतूहल का विषय रहा है। कुछ लोग इसे पूरी तरह उनकी आत्मकथात्मक कृति मानते हैं, लेकिन स्वयं अज्ञेय का कहना है कि यह 'आत्म-जीवनी’ नहीं है। वे कहते हैं कि 'आत्म-घटित’ ही आत्मानुभूति नहीं होता, पर-घटित भी आत्मानुभूत हो सकता है यदि हममें सामथ्र्य है कि हम उसके प्रति खुले रह सकें।...शेखर में मेरापन कुछ अधिक है।’ लेकिन यह कथा ऐसी नहीं है कि इसे 'एक आदमी की निजू बात’ कहकर उड़ाया जा सके। अज्ञेय इसे अपने युग और समाज का प्रतिबिम्ब मानते हैं। इसमें 'मेरा समाज और मेरा युग बोलता है,...वह मेरे और शेखर के युग का प्रतीक है।’ बहुआयामी और संश्लिष्ट चरित्रों के साथ अपने समय-समाज और उनके बीच अपनी अस्मिता को आकार देते व्यक्ति की वेदना को तीव्र और आवेगमयी भावात्मकता के साथ अंकित करते इस उपन्यास के नायक शेखर के बारे में अज्ञेय की टिप्पणी है : 'शेखर कोई बड़ा आदमी नहीं है, वह अच्छा भी आदमी नहीं है। लेकिन वह मानवता के संचित अनुभव के प्रकाश में ईमानदारी से अपने को पहचानने की कोशिश कर रहा है।...उसके साथ चलकर आप पाएँगे कि आपके भीतर भी कहीं पर एक शेखर है जो...जागरूक, स्वतंत्र और ईमानदार है, घोर ईमानदार।’

About the author

जन्म : ७ मार्च १९११ को उत्तर प्रदेश के देवरिया जिले के कुशीनगर नामक ऐतिहासिक स्थान में।

शिक्षा : प्रारंभिक शिक्षा–दीक्षा पिता की देख–रेख में घर पर ही संस्कृत‚ फारसी‚ अंग्रेजी और बँगला भाषा व साहित्य के अध्ययन के साथ। १९२५ में पंजाब से एंट्रेंस की परीक्षा पास की और उसके बाद मद्रास क्रिश्चियन कॉलेज में दाखिल हुए।वहाँ से विज्ञान में इंटर की पढ़ाई पूरी कर १९२७ में वे बी .एस .सी .करने के लिए लाहौर के फॉरमन कॉलेज के छात्र बने।१९२९ में बी .एस .सी . करने के बाद एम .ए .में उन्होंने अंग्रेजी विषय रखा‚ पर क्रांतिकारी गतिविधियों में हिस्सा लेने के कारण पढ़ाई पूरी न हो सकी।

कार्यक्षेत्र : १९३० से १९३६ तक विभिन्न जेलों में कटे। १९३६–१९३७ में ‘सैनिक’ और ‘विशाल भारत’ नामक पत्रिकाओं का संपादन किया। १९४३ से १९४६ तक ब्रिटिश सेना में रहे‚ इसके बाद इलाहाबाद से ‘प्रतीक’ नामक पत्रिका निकाली और ऑल इंडिया रेडियो की नौकरी स्वीकार की। देश–विदेश की यात्राएं कीं। जिसमें उन्होंने कैलिफोर्निया विश्वविद्यालय से लेकर जोधपुर विश्वविद्यालय तक में अध्यापन का काम किया। दिल्ली लौटे और ‘दिनमान’ साप्ताहिक, ‘नवभारत टाइम्स’, अंग्रेजी पत्र ‘वाक्’ और ‘एवरीमैंस’ जैसी प्रसिद्ध पत्र पत्रिकाओं का संपादन किया। १९८० में उन्होंने ‘वत्सलनिधि’ नामक एक न्यास की स्थापना की‚ जिसका उद्देश्य साहित्य और संस्कृति के क्षेत्र में कार्य करना था। दिल्ली में ही ४ अप्रैल १९८७ में उनकी मृत्यु हुई।

१९६४ में ‘आँगन के पार द्वार’ पर उन्हें साहित्य अकादेमी का पुरस्कार प्राप्त हुआ और १९७९ में ‘कितनी नावों में कितनी बार’ पर भारतीय ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार।

विभिन्न पत्र–पत्रिकाओं के संपादन के साथ–साथ ‘अज्ञेय’ ने ‘तार सप्तक’‚ ‘दूसरा सप्तक’‚ और ‘तीसरा सप्तक’ – जैसे युगांतरकारी काव्य–संकलनों का भी संपादन किया तथा ‘पुष्करिणी’ और ‘रूपांबरा’ जैसे काव्य–संकलनों का भी।

वे वत्सलनिधि से प्रकाशित आधा दर्जन निबंध–संग्रहों के भी संपादक हैं। निस्संदेह वे आधुनिक साहित्य के एक शलाका–पुरूष थे‚ जिसने हिंदी साहित्य में भारतेंदु के बाद एक दूसरे आधुनिक युग का प्रवर्तन किया।

Sachchidananda Hirananda Vatsyayana 'Agyeya' (सच्‍चिदानन्‍द हीरानन्‍द वात्‍स्‍यायन 'अज्ञेय'), popularly known by his pen-name Ajneya ("Beyond comprehension"), was a pioneer of modern trends not only in the realm of Hindi poetry, but also fiction, criticism and journalism. He was one of the most prominent exponents of the Nayi Kavita (New Poetry) and Prayog (Experiments) in Modern Hindi literature, edited the 'Saptaks', a literary series, and started Hindi newsweekly, Dinaman.

Agyeya also translated some of his own works, as well as works of some other Indian authors to English. A few books of world literature he translated into Hindi also.

शेखर - एक जीवनी को साहित्य के क्षेत्र में अज्ञेय जी कि श्रेष्ठ रचना माना जाता है और ये भी कहा जाता है कि लेखक ने अपनि जीवनी हि प्रस्तुत की है। ये दो भाग में लिखी गयी है। पहला भाग वस्तुतः शेखर के बाल्यावस्था और कैशोर्य पर आधारित है।
कहानी शेखर के शब्दों में शुरू होति है। वह कारावास में अपनी फाँसी के तय दिन कि प्रतीक्षा कर रहा है और विस्मृतियों कि गलियों से अपनि कहानी लिखना शुरू करता है। मैंने इससे पहले कोई ऐसा उपन्यास नहीं पढ़ा जहाँ एक बच्चे का इत्ना गहरा और प्रभावशाली चित्रण किया हो। लेखक ने शेखर के बचपन कि कथा के माध्यम से उसके मनोवस्था और मनोव्यथा का जो विश्लेषण किया है वो इससे पहले कहीं पढ़ने को नहीं मिला। उसके मन का विरोधाभास, उसका अपने वातावरण से सम्पर्क में रहते हुए भी पृथक रहना। एक बालक के मन के सहस्रों प्रश्न, पर उनके मिले हुए उत्तर से सहमत ना होना और बराबर उत्तर की खोज में रहना। कितनी विचित्र होती है बच्चों के अंतःसंसार।
माँ-पिता से लेकर मित्रों कि छाप उसके चरित्र को कैसे ढालते हैं। शेखर के अंदर का विरोध, अतृप्तता। अपने जीवन के लक्ष्य को खोजते हुए किशोरावस्था में पहुँचना। सरस, शशि, शारदा, इन सबकी अमीट छाप कहीं अंदर बहुत गहरे पैठे हुए।

शेखर: एक जीवनी प्रकृति में अर्ध-जीवनी है और इसे अज्ञेय की महान रचना माना जाता है। यह उपन्यास विभिन्न प्रकार के अनुभवों की कथा में मनोविश्लेषणात्मक विषयों का उपयोग करता है। यह बच्चे के व्यवहार और भावनाओं को समझने के लिए एक मार्गदर्शक है। यह एक बेहतरीन पुस्तक है। आप इसे पढ़ते हुए एक मानव की मानसिक जटिलताओं से भलीभांति परिचित होते हैं। एक बालक से वयस्क होने के रास्ते में कितने तरह के बदलाव होते हैं। समाज से लेकर व्यक्तिगत स्तर तक। सब कुछ इसमें देखने को मिलता है।

लेखन शानदार है और यह दुर्भाग्यपूर्ण है कि ज्यादातर लोग इस पुस्तक के रत्न के बारे में नहीं जानते हैं। शेखर एक विद्रोही है जो स्वतंत्रता-पूर्व समाज के सामने अपने दृष्टिकोण को साबित करना चाहता है, लेकिन स्पष्टत है, यह एक आसान काम नहीं है। इसी तरह कहानी आगे बढ़ती है। इसमे आप पाते हैं की कैसे किरदार अपने मन के संसार में डूब जाता है। कुछ किताबें कुछ परिपक्वता के बाद पढ़ने के लिए होती हैं, यह किताब उन किताबों में से एक है। यहां तक कि उनकी पिछली किताब नदी के द्वीप भी इसी श्रेणी में आती है।

अज्ञेय. भाषा मनुष्य का प्रतिबिम्ब है. जो इस प्रतिबिंब और मनुष्य के मध्य का भेद न्यूनतम कर सके वही लेखक है. लेकिन जिसे पढ़कर मनुष्य और भाषा में भेद करना कठिन हो जाए या मनुष्य ही भाषा का प्रतिबिंब लगने लग जाए उसे क्या कहा जाए. अज्ञेय.

Shekhar: Ek Jivani (Shekhar: A Life) is a novel written by Agyeya, a prominent name in the modern Hindi literature. Born at Kushinagar (UP) in 1911, Agyeya published three novels Shekhar: Ek Jivani, Nadi ke Dweep and Apne Apne Ajnabi. Shekhar had taken the Hindi world by storm when it appeared in 1941. It brought a revolution in the way novelistic characters would be created henceforth. There was also a mystery around Shekhar, as it was announced as a novel in three parts. But after the publication of the second part, readers were made to wait eternally for the third. It was, therefore, always read as a yet to be completed novel. The two published volumes, titled Uthan (Rise) and Sangarsh (Struggle) respectively, explore the evolving notion of individuality in a society grappling with the questions of caste, religion and sexuality. To confront these barriers, one must be a rebel and Shekhar, the protagonist, is a rebel in many ways. On the night before he is to be hanged as a political prisoner, Shekhar finds himself drawn into a vortex of scattered memories – flashes of childhood angst and youthful love amidst days of high idealism and constant struggle against the colonial rule. He tries to navigate his path in the world musing on the philosophical questions of life and death, despair and hope, success and failure, love and hatred, creativity and self-destructiveness, subjectivity and objectivity. In the prologue to the first book, Agyeya writes, “we are rebels against homogeneity, against conformity; we want to change everything; ours is a revolution driven by our opposition to religion, to politics, to economics, and in the end even against our personalities.” and this is what he explores in the first book while contemplating on his childhood, his relation with the different institutions like family, school, religion and society at large. With a lot of focus on "self" and "I", it delves deep into the psyche of an individual. Agyeya, in the prologue, justifies his decision, "There is not a single character in ‘Shekhar’ who is not by and large a composite character, although my experiences and my pain are irrigating Shekhar. And the irrigation is such that saying, ‘ultimately, all literary fiction is at its root autobiographical, if not a sketch of one’s own life then a projection, the story of one’s own possibility’ will not free it from the charge. There is too much of me in ‘Shekhar’; I was unable to follow Eliot’s example (whose importance I concede). ‘Shekhar’ is doubtlessly one individual’s record of personal suffering, although it is simultaneously a reflection of that individual’s life struggles. ”
But overall, it is a powerful narrative and a must read.

Shekhar: Ek Jeevani by Sachidanand Hirananda Vatsyayan Agyeya: Sachidanand Hirananda Vatsyayan Agyeya was born in 1911 to Mr Hirananda Vatsyayan who was an officer in the Arechological Survey of India. His father’s job wass transferable thus he lived in Gorakhpur, Lucknow, Nalanda, Udipi, Madras, Jalandhar, Jammu and Srinagar. He was tutored in Persian, Bangla, Tamil and Sanskrit languages. He completed his B.Sc degree from Foreman Christian College, Lahore in 1929. He was associated with underground Indian Independence movement and was arrested. In jail he wrote the above book in three volumes. The third volume was not returned by jail authorities. First part of the Book is titled “Uthan” (Progress) In the above background, the book needs to be judged. A book by a young man who has just completed his teens but has traveled round the country and has strong feelings about removing the yoke of slavery from the country. Shekhar is the male character while Shekhar’s mother, Shashi, Saraswati, Shanti, Savitri and Sharada are the main female characters. Shekhar does not love his mother much. As a revolutionary, Shekhar gets arrested and in this situation, on the canvas of his mind, the pages of the book move one by one. In the book, the mind of a young man has been described well. The Books revolves round three instincts- ego, fear and sex. First is Shashi, his cousin, a bit less than his age. As young children, they play and study at home. Shekhar seriously keeps reading and writing while Shashi looks at him at intervals and is impressed by his serious study. She has a feeling of love for Shekhar but Shekhar rubs it aside. As the story progresses, Shekhar meets friends who are planning to take action against the British for the early declaration of independence of the country. Shekhar comes in contact with other women Saraswati, Shanti, Savitri and Sharada. Shekhar wants that these women should express their love for him but he should remain uncommitted. Shashi stays with him for a night. Later when her husband refuses to live with her, Shekhar meets and requests her husband to accept her. Such concepts are not accepted in the society. It is shown that he is and inexperienced young man. Shekhar is a loner, rebellious but is not abe to take strong decisions. Shashi‘s character as a strong woman has not be portrayed well. In the absence of the third part of the book, the reader is not able to conclude what is the end of the story. The story depicts the situation of India in 1929. It is quite a good read book.

Review later. But this is a masterpiece of Human Psyche.
Sometimes you don't feel like taking about something when it impresses you beyond all bounds... You feel that talking about it will limit it's grandeur... that you don't want to contain the feel of the book within mere words... I don't want to talk about this book, coz this biography of Shekhar (Ajneya's alter-ego) is simple, deep, emotionally charged, raw, philosophical and it brings back so many memories, a perpetual sense of deja vu it seems.
There's just one word if at all I'll describe the book: 'INTENSE'

Shekhar ek jeevani , restored my belief in contemporary Hindi literature , with its rich content , deep understanding of human turmoils and spiritual vacuous ness of human being . Through the life story of Shekhar writer portrays the different emotions of ham at different stages of life, more so as a rebel and at times a conservative rebel.
However, yet again from a Hindi writer I was disappointed at not being able to take a good thing to a higher level, somewhere the writer holds back his story, and then resets to trite ness , both of Hindi literature in general as well as of the books itself. Also, a good part of story appears contrived when barely an adolescent talks with a Socratic wisdom, as well as imposes that in his surrounding as well. I finished part one, but couldn't gather the courage to start second one , partly because I somehow know, writer has already exhausted all that he had to stay in first half of first book, and he could go no further.
There is a very good reason why Indic - authors haven't gained large publicity despite of being decently good in trade , this book perhaps shows why.

Agyeya was one of the giants of Hindi literature and this book is an autobiographical novel broadly covering his own life. The book covers his own quest for knowledge and encapsulates his struggle to become a "free man”. It is a difficult book and Agyeya here attempts to unwrap the workings of an individual's mind, the pointlessness of life itself and finally comes to conclusion that love is the only anchor on which human life can be based. Rest all is a big muddy pool, the more you go into it, the more you struggle against it, the deeper you go into the cesspool. Hardly anybody in West knows about Agyeya but I wish more people read him. His sutras for living life of which some are captured in this book are precious gift to humanity. It's a pity that Noble Committee overlooked him, otherwise he would have been famous and more people would have read him had he got the award.

एक बच्चे के मन पे तीन भाव (भय काम, अहंकार), के प्रभाव का इतना बढ़िया मनोविश्लेषण। आज मुझे पता चला की ये अज्ञेय की सबसे ज्यादा पढ़ी जाने वाली कृति क्यू है। ये इतना बढ़िया, और पूर्ण है कि अगर इसके दूसरे भाग को ना भी पढ़ा जाए तो ऐसा नहीं लगेगा की कुछ छूट रहा है (मुझे तो पढ़ना है, किसी भी हाल में)। दो भागो में विभाजित होते हुए भी ये अपने आप में एक पूर्ण उपन्यास है। इतने विस्तृत ढंग से इसको लिखा गया है कि यह आपके मानस पटल पर हर लम्हे को इस कदर उकेरता है कि आपको लगेगा कि आप भी इस कहानी के हिस्सा है।

यह हिन्दी साहित्य की उत्कृष्ट रचनाओं में से एक मानी जाती है। हालाँकि, मैं थोड़ा अभिभूत रह गया था। शायद यह थोड़ा बहुत लंबा-घुमावदार और धीमी गति से चलने वाला था। शायद मैं उपन्यास की सेटिंग के ऐतिहासिक संदर्भ से अपनी पहचान नहीं बना पाया। बहरहाल, गेय भाषा और शुद्ध हिंदी शब्दों का प्रयोग पढ़कर अच्छा लगा। अब मैं दूसरा भाग शुरू करूँगा। वर्णन तेज गति से प्रतीत होता है।

एक प्रकम्पमय दीप्ती, शरत्काल में सेंकी हुई आग की मीठी गरमाई, उसमें है बेला के स्वर-सा घनत्व, उसमें है उषा के समय दूर पहाड़ पे बजती हुई बीन की खींची हुई वेदना, उसमें है बरसात की घोर अँधेरी रात में सुनी हुई वंशी का मर्मभेदी आग्रह और इन सब के साथ-साथ है यौवन के गहरे और टूटने की सीमा तक आकर न टूटने वाले स्वर की ललकार-सी।

तट पर छोटी झाड़ियां और ठूँठे वृक्षों का घना जंगल। खींची हुई आह की तरह गर्म और निस्तब्ध रात। ऊपर पेड़ों की सूखी शाखा में उलझा हुआ एकाध तारा, नीचे मरे हुए और धूल हुए पत्तों की सूखी आहों की भाफ और सामने .... एक बिखरा हुआ शव। उसके दोनों हाथ कटे हुए हैं। एक पैर कटा हुआ है, पेट खुल-सा गया है और उसमे से अँतड़ियाँ बाहर गिरी पड़ी हैं। फटी-फटी आँखें, ऊपर शाखा के जाल को भेदकर देख रहीं हैं किसी तारे को, और मुँह एक बिगड़ी हुई दर्द भरी मुसकुराहट लिए हुए हैं

शिक्षा देना संसार अपना सबसे बड़ा कर्त्तव्य समझता है, किन्तु शिक्षा अपने मन की, शिष्य के मन की नहीं। क्योंकि संसार का 'आदर्श व्यक्ति' व्यक्ति नहीं एक 'टाइप' है, और संसार चाहता है की सर्वप्रथम अवसर पर ही प्रत्येक व्यक्ति को थोक-पीटकर, उसका व्यक्तित्व कुचलकर, उसे उस टाइप में सम्मलित कर लिया जाय. उसे मूल रचना न रहने देकर एक प्रतिलिपि-मात्र बना दिया जाय।

इसमे बहुत शक्ति और स्फूर्ति आ गयी है, उसे लगता, उसे जीवन की एक नई क़िस्त मिलने वाली है … वह अपने ही मद में उन्मद कस्तूरी मृग की तरह या प्लेग से आक्रांत चूहे के तरह या अपनी दुम का पीछा करते हुए कुत्ते की तरह, अपने ही आस पास चक्कर काट कर रह जाता …

An encounter with the caste system on joining a boarding school

उनका भोजनागार सब ओर से घिरा हुआ था, ताकि किसी आते जाते व्यक्ति के कारण उनके भोजन में 'दृष्टिदोष' न हो जाए, वह छोटी जाति देखा जाकर भ्रष्ट न हो जाए। कभी ऐसा हो जाता, तो वह भोजन उतना ही अखाद्य हो जाता जैसे किसी कुत्ते ने उसे झूठा कर दिया। यद्यपि कुत्ते कई बार भोजनाघर में घुस आते थे और उन्हें 'हिश' करके भगा देना पर्याप्त होता था.

सबसे पहले तुम शशी - ये चार शब्द मेरे ज़हन मे मानो ऐसे घर कर गये जैसे कोई धुन जिसे ना चाहते हुए भी मै गुनगुनाता जाता हूँ। सबसे पहले तुम शशी - कितनी मधुरता है इन चार शब्दों मे, कितनी गहराई। शेखर एक जीवनी का पहला भाग पढते हुए मुझे ऐसी ही किसी रहस्यमई गहराई मे उतरने का मौका मिला। मैं नहीं जानता कि किताब को कैसे बयान करूँ। किताब शेखर के बारे मे है, उसके होने के बारे मे है, और इस बारे मे भी कि कैसे उसका होना किसी सीधी सड़क के जैसा नहीं है। उसका होना है किसी समुंदर के जैसा, जिसकी गहराई को नापा नहीं जा सकता, जिस मे से कब कैसी लहर उठ पड़ेगी, इसका अनुमान नहीं लगाया जा सकता। किताब शेखर के अंतरमन का एक्स्प्लोरेशन है, सिर्फ उसकी बाहरी ज़िंदगी का स्केच नहीं। और यही उसकी कहानी को स्पेशल बनाता है - जैसे हम सभी की कहानी। कैसे माँ कि कही एक बात उसके दिल मे घर कर जाती है, किस तरह वो अपने पिता को देखता है, जैसे कोई अजनबी, फरेब से भरा इंसान। कैसे वो कास्ट, जेंडर और भगवान से जुड़े सवाल खुद से पूछता है। कैसे उसे दुनिया मे सिर्फ मक्कारी ही दिखती है। किस तरह वो कभी पंछी बन जाना चाहता है तो कभी झरना। शेखर नेचर मे खुद को देखता है, और नेचर की तरह ही खुद को विशाल और अनियंत्रित पाता है। घास के बने शेर से वो सीखता है कि 'डर डरने से होता है'। पिंजरे से आज़ाद हुआ तोता उसे सिखाता है कि आज़ादी कितनी विशाल होती है, कि आप किसी भी दिशा मे उड़ सकते हैं, उसे सालों एक पिंजरे मे बिता देने के बाद स्वीकार कर पाना बहुत मुश्किल होता है। आज़ादी मिल जाने के बाद भी आज़���दी के लिए खुद को तय्यार करना होता है। शायद शेखर की ज़िंदगी भी यही है - पहले पिंजरे का ज्ञान होना, फिर उस पिंजरे से निकल पाना, और उसके बाद मिलने वाली इतनी बड़ी आज़ादी से जूझना। किताब का पहला भाग खत्म हुआ है। दूसरे भाग को शुरू करने के लिये मै उत्सुक हूँ। खूबसूरत।

किताब जो आपको अपने ही अंदर चल रही बहुत सी उलझनों जो आपने अपने बचपन या आस पास देख कर महसूस करी है उसकी दृश्यात्मक छवि प्रस्तुत करती है, शेखर के जीवन के हर चरण में एक प्रसन्न और अगले उमर के चरण में उसका तर्कपूर्ण उतर देने का बहुत ही विचारात्मक प्रस्तुति इस किताब में की गई है। अभिभावकों द्वारा की गई अन्याय से लेकर सामाज के अनेकों अन्याय जो केवल शेखर के नहीं अपितु आस पास और ये कहा जाए आज के समय का अनुभव भी है बहुत ही गहनता के साथ लिखा गया है।

"शेखर एक जीवनी" जो अज्ञेय जी ने तीन खंडों में कारावास के दौरान लिखा था लेकिन तीसरे खंड का जेल से रिलीज न होने के कारण से इसे दो ही खंडों में छापा गया। कुछ लोग इसे अज्ञेय की जीवनी बताते है जबकि अज्ञेय जी के अनुसार शेखर में मेरापन कुछ अधिक है लेकिन ये आत्मजीवनी नही है।

शेखर एक ऐसा लड़का है जो बचपन से हर चीज में एक सवाल खोज लेता है फिर वो भगवान(धर्म) को लेकर हो या फिर समाज को लेकर। जैसे हम क्यू भगवान की पूजा करते है, क्यू पड़ोस में रहने वाली लड़की(जो की शुद्र है) के साथ मैं खेल नही सकता या उसका दिया कुछ खा नही सकता। ऐसी ही कई सवाल है जो वो हमेशा पूछता रहता है।
उपन्यास के पहले खंड में शेखर के बचपन के जीवन का वर्णन है जहां उसके स्कूली जीवन तक का वर्णन मिलता है। वही पर दूसरे खंड में स्कूल के बाद का वर्णन है।
शेखर शुरू से ही विद्रोही होता है अपनी इन्ही आदतों की वजह से जहां वो कुछ गरीब बच्चो को फ्री में पढ़ाता है वही पर एक स्वयंसेवक संघ से जुड़कर 10 महीनो के लिए जेल भी चला जाता है जहां पर उसकी मुलाकात बाबा और मोहसिन से होती है जिनसे वह जीवन और मृत्यु, निराशा और आशा, सफलता और विफलता, प्रेम और घृणा, रचनात्मकता और आत्म-विनाश, व्यक्तिपरकता और निष्पक्षता जैसे विचारो पर सवाल करता है और पूरी पुस्तक में वह इन्ही विचारो से जूझता रहता है। उसकी मौसेरी बहन शशि का उसके जीवन पर बहुत गहरा पर पढ़ता है जिसका पति उसको शेखर से उसके रिश्ते के शक के चलते घर से निकाल देता है।
यह एक बहुत ही खूबसूरत उपन्यास है जो 1920 के आसपास के समय के बारे में बहुत अच्छी तरह से जानकारी देती है साथ ही हमे कुछ कठिन प्रश्नों का जवाब देने की भी कोशिश करती है।

यदि आपने इससे पहले अज्ञेय जी के "नदी के दीप" या "कसप" को पढ़ रखा है तो आप उनकी लेखनी से वाकिफ होंगे कि उनका उपन्यास ऐसे ही सीधे सीधे नही लिखा होता हर पृष्ट एक किताब जैसा लंबा लगता है लेकिन फिर भी आप उसे पढ़ना चाहते है।
"शेखर एक जीवनी" एक कमाल का उपन्यास है जिसे सभी हिंदी साहित्य में रुचि रखने वाले को पढ़ना चाहिए । मुझे पूरा विश्वास है कि इस किताब के बाद आप उनकी बाकी रचनाओं को भी जरूर पढ़ना चाहेंगे।

Agyeya is comparable to an extent with Miller regarding fascination of human sexuality,with Woolf when seen in context of stream of consciousness,Cortazar if we want to read randomly starting from middle of the work.
But inspite of that there is a tinge of naturalism in his works,especially in this one in which protagonist strives to be in unity with the nature in a cosmic manner.
There is a reflection of person's inner contradictions when he is seen with respect to his social milieu,there is element of rebellion of the protagonist along with a wholehearted feeling of contentness in him.
But along with all these shades he doesnt fails to paint a picture of rebel that is inside him,inside us and inside this whole society itself which continously propels to strive towards a subjective perfection that in itself is indescribable.

जब इसे पहली बार पढ़ा था तब मैं 17 साल का था... स्कूल के बाद जिंदगी बहुत बदल गई थी.. सब कुछ बदल गया था.. हिन्दी किताबें छूट गईं थीं लेकिन मेरे मन में वो वैसी ही थी, ईश्वर की तरह.. मैं जानता था कि एक दिन इस ओर लौटना ही है.. तब से पूरे ग्यारह बरसों के बाद फिर से इस किताब को पढ़ना मेरे लिए जीवन को समझने जैसा है.. वो बातें जो 17 की उम्र में पढ़ तो लीं थी लेकिन समझ में आज आ पायीं हैं.. इसका दूसरा भाग अभी पढ़ रहा हूँ... 🌸
