People in glass houses... A mysterious murder in a lift has everyone baffled, including P.I. (and witch extraordinaire), Jill Gooder. Meanwhile, her love life might be falling apart, but at least Winky, her one-eyed cat has a date. ...should hide their custard creams.
Okay, still Enjoying Jill and her adventures. I felt this volume was ever so slightly on the slower side this time around, or a bit less peachy round the angles :-) but the general plot around TDO (no spoilers here!) Takes shape slowly. Can't wait to find out more :-) One thing for sure, those volumes are easily devoured in a few hours. Works for me!
This series gets funnier and funnier with each volume, I was laughing so hard with the cat scenes in this book I was almost crying. The mystery is a bit more complicated then in previous volumes but that's not why I read the series it's all about the crazy cast of characters.
This was, of course, excellent! I really like a mystery that has some fun elements of tongue-in-cheek commentary in it. This series lends itself well in that regard. Grandma is a dangerous witch that one must be careful around as she reads thoughts and has no sense of humor. The twins are a pair of squabbling adults with the mentality and behavior of a couple of teens. Kathy, the human sister, is self-centered and obnoxious, and doesn't get the personal boundaries of others (but just don't get in HER space!) Put this all together with one new witch who is trying to learn to be a witch while juggling 2 families (one human one witchy), a career as a PI, 2 men, and life in general, and you get a story that keeps one laughing and wanting more!
Yes, these are fluff reads. The previous books have been heavy on the humor and quirky situations. This one has a more serious mystery to solve. All in all, it was enjoyable but the side characters need to quit asking for "favors".
Flying through this series fast! I attribute that to the fact that the books are so good. I cannot get enough of the humor, romance, mystery, and drama that is Jill Gooder's life.
Jill Gooder is a witch! At least she just recently found out she was one. She also runs her late adoptive father's detective agency. Jill travels and solves mysteries between both worlds, but cannot let humans or her human family find out about her magical life. Understandably this becomes difficult as her witch family have decided to visit a number of times, and her Grandmother opened up a yarn / wool shop nearby with an Everlasting Wool subscription available (like Netflix). That and there is a cat in Jill's office... flying a remote control helicopter?
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Jill Gooder Jack Maxwell Pearl Amber Kathy ---------------------------------- What happens? Jill is a witchy PI. She follows two cases in this book one for the paranormal or supes and one for a human. The human case is certainly more interesting of a man being murdered and no one knowing how he was murdered in the lift. The supe case was of cakes arriving at shops smashed up. Amongst this Jill is dealing with a lawyer(I think he was a lawyer) trying to take over her office space. Basically hes a general jerk who thinks he owns the world and Jill doesn't bow down to it. Final thoughts I like this book, as usual I couldn't put it down and I was enthralled in it as I started. Its hard to pace myself with these books. So many things happen there are so many little details you can over look. I also have to say although these mysteries aren't groundbreaking I don't always guess them mainly because I enjoy this so much I don't want to spoil it but sometimes they are good mysteries. Would I read again?: Yes Would I read this author again?: Yes
I love the Witch P.I. series! While one could possibly read each book on its own, I prefer to read them in sequence and watch how the characters develop from one book to the next.

Maybe I could shed a little clarity on when to use "(Name) and I" or "(Name) and me." As a long-ago elementary school English teacher explained it to me, "(Name) and I" = "WE", while "(Name) and me" = US. So, in the note for page 246 above, "maybe Jack and me could give it" translates to "maybe US could give it." That is obviously NOT what the author wanted to say!
This was another good one in this series. Jill has her hands full with several cases, and it appears she is only get paid for one of them. To top it off her dating life seems to be going downhill, but both of her animals seem to have dates, and she is alone. To top it off she has to deal with her scary grandmother, some other witches who don't want her around, and a few other things as well.
This book was really good. I enjoyed Jill and her humor in this one. Even though I can't stand her sister, I still enjoyed the book. I just wish her sister wasn't in it as much, or at all.
This one is still wonderful, but so far has been my least favorite. It seemed like there were a lot of cases with a lot of random things and people thrown into this one. She is working on a case involving a man who was stabbed in his apartment elevator, trying to find out why the cake supplier for Cuppy C is providing smashed and blemished cakes, trying to find out what happened to Aunt Lucy's beau (Lester) because he's suddenly gone radio silent, trying to fight off the developer who wants to buy her office space, and trying to juggle the 2 men in her life (Drake- wizard, Jack Maxwell-human detective). Drake's brother comes in at the very end and says he took the blame for the crime he (the brother) committed, so she's confused again about what to do with Drake. Jack hired a partner who tried to keep Jack and Jill apart, but by the end he got rid of the partner, thus opening himself up again. She also goes to her twin cousin's 10 year high school reunion with them and meets the guy they both had a crush on, but he is now fat and bald. He is interested in the twins, but they have no interest whatsoever. Additionally, her grandma enters her into a "Levels" contest in which witches from every level compete and one advances all the way to level 6. She did not win, but she made it beyond her level 2 status. As you see, there is just SO much going on in this book and its still just over 200 pages so its a lot to keep up with and jumps around a little. In the very end, you find out that there are murders going on at a bar and grill called Magpie. The last scene of the book is when Jill comes in to her apartment and sees a card on her coffee table congratulating her on her levels test and below it is a picture of a magpie standing in a pool of blood. BUM BUM BUM. I'm reading one of these every day or 2 so I will keep reading until closer to Halloween, but then I think I will be ready for a little break from this series. Its just a lot to keep up with in a short period of time and the side characters pop in and out so briefly that is hard to get to know them and keep track.

For the first time in this series, the murder investigation was actually interesting. And the resolution was also understandable. On the other hand, the quirky side characters weren't their humorous selves. While I found the idea of cats communicating via semaphore amusing, the toy helicopter was pushing it. If humans aren't supposed to notice how smart cats are then a toy helicopter flying back and forth between two buildings is not the way to go. The twins were even more annoying than usual (first the thing in the club and then asking Jill to turn their high school sweetheart into a toad), the beanie storyline with Kate has got to stop. These relatives are probably the most egotistical people on the face of the earth. The book, however, introduced one character that (deliberately) topped those three in lieu of annoyance: Sushi, Maxwell's new partner, who apparently wants the detective for herself.
Jill wasn't her best either. First, she avoids Drake after finding out that he was one of Daze's ex-clients, without having asked about his crime or giving him the chance to explain. And then there was the garden party thing. Wearing heels to a lawn party is kind of idiotic but there is an easy remedy. Take the shoes off and go barefoot. Why do I have to listen to the complaints about a bad shoewear choice for pages? And why is Jill's first answer to any possible confrontation a (bad) lie and making her escape?
If you liked the other ones for because they are entertaining if superficial reads then you are going to like this one. However, the case is better than the humor for a change.
The writer has started to get her rhythm in this book. The characters are more well rounded, and the irritating parts of the cousins I found off putting in the first ones has mellowed out. The multiple mysteries are still OK, since you would expect a PI to have more than one case at a time. I like that some of them are not murders, but things you might actually see a PI investigating, both in the human, and the paranormal world. There are a lot more books in this series, and I hope it continues to get better. I will say, that I would recommend if someone was beginning the series to start with this one. The author does a great job getting one up to speed so you do not feel lost if you had not read the others. And, since this is the best of the four, one would more likely want to continue to read.
A funny and entertaining cozy mystery series. A great cast of characters with which is where Wells vampires and other supernatural characters intermixing with the human world in the supernatural world. Our main character is a female private investigator that finds out she’s a witch and gets to straddle both worlds solving mysteries on both sides of the tracks. Also there is a cantankerous old grandma who is a top-flight which trying to teach Jill the main character how to be a witch. Mini hilarious interactions at times with a dark twist at others with a hilarious twist. Check them out
Still bewitched by the spells, characters, and story line!!! This is so funny and interesting. I am so happy I read the first book, it got me hooked right from the first. This series is so intriguing and I am enjoying the journey so very much. Thank you so much for your talent and for providing something that has kept my mind off what's going on in our country right now! I makes it so much easier to stay in and not be out in public taking chances of becoming the next victim perhaps. I love this whole series so far. It's intertaining, funny and interesting! Thanks so very much for providing such wonderful intertainment. Stay well a d be save.
I can't stop with this series... I've already bought the next one.
I really enjoyed the main mystery in this book.. the elevator one. It was tricky, well developed, intriguing. As usual there were others investigations but not as catchy as this one.
The humour was less in amount but always present. I really enjoyed Jill dealing with her jealousy toward Sushi. I hope we see more of her but far away from Maxwell.
Her Grandma keeps getting scary and scary.
I want to know the truth about Drake. I missed him and was glad to read in the end his brother jumping in for him.
I would say 3.5 - 4. The cliffhanger wonderful... Lets keep on reading 😁👏🏻

Jill keeps getting into unusual problems which helps make this series continue to be interesting. There's a baking competition going on in Candlefield (witch central). Jill learns a new spell and someone is murdered on an elevator.
Jill's grandma enters her into a magic competition without bothering to check with Jill first. Detective Maxwell has a attractive woman working with him and she tells Jill off in no uncertain terms.
Amber and Pearl learn not to mess with the Grandma. There's a mystery about pastry and another about who poisoned Jill. There's more threats and Winky, the cat, is still around (unfortunately.)
The formatting of this series is really my only complaint. The humor is absurd but knowingly so.
Though to me, Winky makes this series what it is. I adore him — who wouldn’t love a talking one-eyed cat who uses semaphore to communicate with his lady love and who has a snarky kick-ass sense of humor?
But honestly, Abbott’s sense of the absurd is what drives this series. Grandma is the best, the twins are annoying but funny with their blonde moments, Kathy is such a good older sister, and Jill is a snarky, sarcastic, mischievous heroine that makes me smile.
I love the dry sense of humor that the protagonist has in this set of mysteries and by this book you really feel like you’ve grown to know the characters personally. There are a few intriguing long term mysteries going on in the background as well. The only improvement I see would be that there are a few areas where the author provides a recap and there is even one that is a recap of an earlier chapter in this book. That could be edited out but I still love the series and have a hard time putting them down.
I tried VERY hard to like this series. I was looking for something that wasn't over the top gory or sexy. It succeeded in meeting those qualifications so I gave it a HUGE chance but I JUST COULDN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE.
About 2/3 of each book is dedicated to people treating her like garbage, cheating her, trying to kill her, and basically making me VERY uncomfortable. She's supposed to be the HEROINE but can't stand up for herself against ANYTHING. She was just too pitiful to continue reading. I felt my self-esteem shrinking right along with hers. How could ANYONE think these books are funny?
Another delightful trip to Washbridge and Candlefield
I have to say that I am thoroughly enjoying the reads of Jill and her antics of being a PI and a witch, while getting to the grips of all the spells, very neat! My one and only gripe is whether or not we are some where in England or America, as there are references to both as in using pounds for money and 'going to the mall' which is typically American! As well as using 911 to call the police. Despite all that the concept for this story was very clever, and cleared up nicely for the next instalment! Can't wait to read it!
Another cute chapter in the story of Jill Gooder, PI following in her adopted father's shoes, and newly reunited with her witch family who are teaching her how to use her magic. The characters and shenanigans are cute and quirky. The author relies a bit too much on introducing too many minor characters and mysteries rather than going deeper into the characters and many storylines but all good and fun. Winky, the one eyed cat, and Mrs V, the knitting secretary, are my favorites. In this book, Jill solves a murder, participates in a magic competition, solves cake smashing crime spree, faces of Jack's new partner, helps Winky with his lovelife, helps Mrs V in a challenge against her sister and then some.
I really enjoy this author and the concept of the series. The four stars are simply because I wasn't inundated with ant long, drawn out sez scenes, something remarkably difficult to find.
I also enjoy the writing style. The pacing sometimes is harder for me to track, but that's probably me.
I am tired of the holier than though attitude of the main character. Of the childish behavior of the adult twins. Seriously. Are they 16?
I'm less than thrilled about the constant stereotyping. Men don't know anything, etc.
And yet, I like the writing style. So I'll probably borrow the next one.
This is the fourth book I’ve read in this series .... and I’ve really enjoyed every one. The characters in these books make me really smile .... takes me back to reading as a child, when I used to fall for Edin Blyton’s fabulous characters .... and that’s not an easy thing to do .... they are easy to read and simply a joy ... already reaching for the next one!
Just finished reading Witch Is When Things Fell Apart (A Witch P.I. Mystery Book 4) Kindle Edition by Adele Abbott . I liked the story of a private eye solving cases in both the human and the witching world. She also has a cat with one eye that knows how to hack into her computer and buy things, who finds a girlfriend, and finally wants Jill to move to a more expensive building. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01...
