Civil unrest floods the hometown of a medical researcher and his doctor wife just as he is on the brink of a major discovery. They flee to an isolated Nordic research facility to finish the project, but fractures in their marriage start to appear. As the outside world grows increasingly hostile, they are forced to choose between conflicting allegiances.
Perhaps not the best play to read during the third lockdown of a global pandemic; nevertheless, this is a well crafted piece of pressure cooker drama. Valhalla somewhat falls off the tracks in its final act and leaves certain threads hanging without clear resolutions - which could have resulted in some brilliant twists and revelations - but it is a two-hander dripping in subtext. It’s a piece ripe for a pair of strong actors to sink their teeth into and delve into the unspoken fractures that exist between this troubled couple.
