Mark Morris became a full-time writer in 1988 on the Enterprise Allowance Scheme, and a year later saw the release of his first novel, Toady. He has since published a further sixteen novels, among which are Stitch, The Immaculate, The Secret of Anatomy, Fiddleback, The Deluge and four books in the popular Doctor Who range.
His short stories, novellas, articles and reviews have appeared in a wide variety of anthologies and magazines, and he is editor of the highly-acclaimed Cinema Macabre, a book of fifty horror movie essays by genre luminaries, for which he won the 2007 British Fantasy Award.
His most recently published or forthcoming work includes a novella entitled It Sustains for Earthling Publications, a Torchwood novel entitled Bay of the Dead, several Doctor Who audios for Big Finish Productions, a follow-up volume to Cinema Macabre entitled Cinema Futura and a new short story collection, Long Shadows, Nightmare Light.
So far, this reminds me a lot of John Connolly. Which means I'm pretty close to abandoning it.
Update: I was starting to squirm as "The Biters" wended its soap-operatic way through its longwinded exposition. Then I get to the (literally) tearjerker ending. Sorry, I'm just too old and cynical to warm up to this.
I’ve enjoyed all of the novels I’ve read by Mark Morris but I can’t say the same for his short fiction. There’s a few absolute gems but too many of the stories in this collection had ambiguous endings. I don’t mind stories that make me think but some of the stories just end, with no clues as to what happened. I’ll stick to his full length fiction in future.
Morris has a really easy to read writing style, which I appreciate. Some of the stories had really solid premises that I enjoyed. Unfortunately even those felt a little neutered and had a real “we’re deep, aren’t we?” feeling. A lot of the stories were just plain dull. Did enjoy it and there were no terrible stories, but there were also no standout incredible stories.
