Ali Reynolds #10.5

No Honor Among Thieves

Rate this book
For the first time ever, Ali Reynolds and Joanna Brady, New York Times bestselling author J.A. Jance’s popular series sleuths, join forces to solve a terrifying crime in this exclusive enovella that has everything you want in a thriller—page-turning action, breathtaking twists and turns, edge-of-your-seat suspense, and…Legos.

“A semi’s gone over the embankment.” The call wakes Sheriff Joanna Brady in the middle of the night, but what brings her fully alert is the rest of the story. The driver didn’t drift off to sleep and cross the center line—he was shot, multiple times, by someone with serious firepower. And when the truck crashed through the guardrail, its payload wound up scattered all over the road—boxes upon boxes of Legos.

Legos that are being tracked by B. Simpson’s security firm to reduce black market sales—and Ali Reynolds is just the woman to get to the bottom of the crime. She has the tech and the intel to follow the money (or, in this case, the Legos), which makes her a valuable asset to Joanna’s team. Soon these two strong women realize that they’re not just sharing a case, they’re kindred spirits—which is paramount, because the killer they’re up against is anything but child’s play.

I have only previously read a novella by J.A, Jance, but that was with J.P. Beaumont. This time, I got to get to know two other characters Ali Reynolds and Joanna Brady from Jance's two other series as they join forces to stop LEGO thieves.

Limited LEGO products are apparently quite valuable and there seems to be a black market for it. But when something goes wrong and a truckload of LEGO gets ambushed must Ali Reynolds and Joanna Brady find the culprits.

I find novellas the perfect way to get to know series, to see if I find the characters interesting enough to read the books and get to know the writing style of the authors. I found this story OK, well-written and quite enjoyable action-filled. I must admit that I wasn't completely taken with the story of LEGO theft. For some reason, it just didn't appeal that much to me. Perhaps I'm not just that interested in organized LEGO thieves.

Thanks to Gallery, Threshold, Pocket Books and NetGalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

3.0 Stars of 5.0 Stars - "I Liked It" (just)

J A Jance - Ali Reynolds 10.5 - No Honor Among Thieves (Novella)
Audiobook - 02:33 Hours - Narrator: Karen Ziemba

I rarely read or listen to "novellas", but this one has J A Jance joining two of her series protags, "Alison (Ali) Reynolds" and "Joanna Brady" in a short story. It was readable and interesting, but nothing to get me excited. Jance's writing deserved a minimum of 3.0 Stars, and the plot/storyline probably deserved less, so 3.0 overall it is.

This novella unites two of J.A. Jance’s three sleuths: Sheriff Joanna Brady and Ali Reynolds. Brady is called out to investigate an early morning truck crash, where the truck cab is riddled with bullets and the cargo (Legos) spread all over the highway. High Noon Enterprises finds out and dispatches a team to investigate how its client's merchandise ended up in the Arizona desert. Lots of action, but Jance missed an opportunity to develop the bad guys, and make this story richer.

This novella started out with such a jolt of action that didn't let up until the end.

Ms. Jance introduces Ali Reynolds to Cochise County Sheriff's Joanna Brady in this action-packed novella. It was a clever way to introduce the reader to her other successful series.

Sheriff Brady gets an early morning wake-up call about a truck that has gone over an embankment, it's not your typical accident. The truck is riddled with heavy gunfire, she assumes it's a drug war due to the amount of heavy artillery that they find in the truck and the driver, who was already dead before he went over the embankment. She's puzzled because of the cargo, it's Legos! Why would anyone go through that much trouble to kill someone who is hauling cartons of Legos unless there is something hidden in those cases of toys?

In comes Ali Reynolds, whose husband's security company is working for the Lego company. She is dispatched to go to Cochise county to find out what is going on with these legos. The two women are suspicious of each other at first but end up solving this little caper together.

I've not read many of Ms. Jance's mysteries and it's my loss. I love strong female leads and she has just that in these two women. I can't wait to read what's in store for Sheriff Brady!

I would like to thank Pocket Star Publishing and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book for my honest review.

I miss the Joanna Brady series. It has been sometime since Jance has written a new book in the series. I saw this novella that combines Joanna Brady and Ali Reynolds together and thought it might be a fun read even if it is a novella.

Sheriff Brady received a call in the middle of the night about a semi- truck going over the embankment. It is not an accident; the driver was shot. The cargo was Legos being tracked by R’s security firm. Ali is sent to investigate and to follow the money with all her high tech equipment. It is great to have these two work together; all we need now is to add Beaumont. Maybe this will be a new series.

The book is well written. The pace is fast. To fully enjoy this novella, the reader should be familiar with both the Brady and Reynolds’ series. One thing I like about reading J. A. Jance books is there is no profanity.

Karen Ziemba does a great job narrating the book. She is the regular narrator for the Ali Reynolds’ series. Ziemba was a ballet dance, actress, singer and did musical theatre. She now is a well-known audiobook narrator.

Not really a fan of these short novellas in between the novels even though it was nice to have a quick catch up with what's happening with Sheriff Joanna Brady. I read the first 2 Ali Reynolds novels when they came out and wasn't that taken with her character. My feelings haven't changed after reading this one. I will continue to read all the Johanna Brady and J.P. Beaumont stories, but will definitely pass on the author's Ali Reynolds series.

Update 5/19/21
My feelings about the Ali Reynolds series have now changed since reading the first 3 novels in the series. I still don't care for those first 3 books, especially #3, but I've since gone back in the last 2 weeks and read a number of the later novels, (and reread this one), and have really been enjoying them. I guess maybe it took a number of books for the author to get the character just right, or just right for me.

Very short story.

Two very strong, but different many ways are working together. Missing shipment of LEGO's. Fast paced story, love to read about this two characters in the future books.

Actually a 3.5 as I think they bit off too much case to cover in a novella. The whole stinking mess was resolved in just one day with a body count of seven! Did enjoy having Ali and Cami bring their gifts to the table. Hope to see them in a later case with Joanna.

For some reason, Jance treated us to two Sheriff Joanna Brady novellas forerunner to her full-length novel “Downfall”, 17th (and currently latest) in that popular series. Both “Thieves” and “Random Acts” feature both Brady as well as Jance’s younger geek Ali Reynolds, whose stories we abandoned after a couple of tries. Fortunately, Brady has by far the larger role in both these short works, although this one is good for over an hour of entertainment.

Awakened at night for a vehicular fatality involving a single truck, Brady soon finds homicide on the table when the truck driver-side door is obviously riddled with machine-gun fire. The lack of any skid marks presumes the driver was dead well before the vehicle careened through a guardrail and broke into pieces. Identifying the body by fingerprints as a felon, the driver's cargo oddly was literally boxes and boxes of expensive Lego sets. Meanwhile, Reynolds’ security firm is investigating smuggling, and the Lego caper seems to fit. She and Brady team up, and through some clever surveillance work, we soon have a real action-packed adventure on our hands as more criminal deaths follow ere the perps are ultimately located.

While at first we were puzzled that two straight novellas would start in similar fashion (highway deaths turned murder), this one was suspenseful and interesting. It seems Jance, one of our favorite writers, is pretty good at shorter form media!

I love all things Joanna Brady, and this novella was quite action-packed and suspenseful. However, I saw something to me that was a glaring issue in the story - which I won't detail because I don't want to create a spoiler. It made the story not work for me as the whole thing became literally unbelievable to me.

So to me, although this novella was fun and action-packed, it lacked the character development and the credibility I usually find in the Joanna Brady series.

Review:

I have read and enjoyed many of the Joanna Brady series, but I do not think I have read any of the Ali Reynolds series. So this novella was a great way to meet and learn about this new-to-me character.
The characters are well developed and well rounded. Both Joanna and Ali are strong willed and determined women. They are not afraid to do what whatever it takes to get the job done. As you can imagine, the two butt heads at times but that made things all the more interesting.

The writing style flows smoothly and this novella is a quick, easy read. As in all of the books that this author writes, there is action, mystery and suspense to keep the reader turning the pages.

I would recommend this novella to anyone who enjoys a well written mystery suspense. If you are a fan of either of the two series, you will enjoy a short visit with these characters.

I received a free copy from NetGalley in exchange for a honest review. I would like to thank NetGalley and Gallery, Threshold Pocket Books for the opportunity to read and review this novella.

From the Joanna Brady side of the equation, this book probably deserves 4 stars. From Ali’s side, I’m trying really hard to talk myself up to a 2-star rating. I enjoyed watching Joanna and Ali work together. I love seeing strong female leads in a genre that tends to be masculine, and I adored the chance to see Cami out from behind her keyboard. I didn’t enjoy that Ali willfully chooses to do something so incredibly, and almost fatally, stupid. I’m sure there had to have been a different way the author could have achieved the same ends without portraying her heroine as a needlessly reckless idiot – even more so than she’s ever been in any of the other books. I was really loving this story up to that scene. This one really angered me because Ali behaves like a petulant toddler whining that she’s not the center of attention. Dammit woman! With the potential for automatic gunfire, be grateful you’re not at the center.

Tagged as a novella in the Ali Reynolds series, this mystery brings her together with Joanna Brady, the protagonist in another of Jance's series. With Joanna's storyline reveal in the last few pages, I was surprised that this was not part of her series especially since the crime is in her neck of the woods. Nonetheless, it was an interesting quick mystery that will introduce readers of one series to the other. I was familiar with Joanna not Ali when I started this mystery and will probably stay that way as I was not impressed by Ali's attitude toward her role in solving the case or her disregard for Joanna's orders.

As usual, J.A. Janice gives us a fast paced novella, this time with Ali and Joanna Brady working together.
From first word til last J.A. Maintains her status a top notch crime writer.
It was also good to be back in Southeastern AZ and to a heads up on a Joanna Brady surprise.

It's always interesting how an author can blend the main characters from two otherwise separate series into one joint storyline. The not-unexpected meeting of Ali Reynolds and Joanna Brady, both long-time Arizona residents, comes about through the Cochise County murder of a truck driver who was carrying valuable merchandise that belonged to one of High Noon Security's prominent clients. That Ali Reynolds would become involved with her husband's company and be sent to Bisbee to work on the case was totally logical and of course would result in the meeting of the two women. That there would be mutual respect between the two is also not unexpected and I believe their paths will cross again in the near future. Kudos to J. A. Jance for her clever plot development and also for the surprise personal event at the end.

Twice the sleuths means twice (or maybe ten times) the violence. Fans of the Joanna Brady series will not want to miss this one, though, because there is an important development for the Sheriff.

This book starts off with a bang and does not let off until the end. You begin with the sheriff getting a call about a big rig going over the side of the road, and then it turning into something else altogether once they find the real reason. You are slowly taken in by this story not thinking how a load of Legos could have anything to do with it but as the author takes you through the process it starts to make sense. I can’t really say too much else about this book without giving out the rest of the story, but it is well written and a fast read. A very good book. I got this book from netgalley. I gave it 4 stars. I really liked this story. Although it was short it introduced characters in a wild ride way. The action was well described and the characters brought the reader within the scenes in a real way. The ending left the reader hanging and as a series book that's all right. I recommend this to any one who likes detective, police stories.

This short story is weak. The dialogue and plot points are extremely unbelievable. The character set-ups are disjointed, almost as if put together in a group writing effort. It feels sloppy.

Much too predictable and even though I know this is fiction, there is no way Southern Arizona Law Enforcement would operate this way. This was nowhere close to being believable.

A nice short little novella of a mystery about a trucker killed while driving his truck though Coshise County in Arizona. It is called in to Sheriff Joanna Brady in the middle of the night and she rushes out to see what has happened. Apparently, the trailer of the truck was full of toys...somewhat rare and therefor valuable toys.

Joanna is the first female sheriff and has worked hard to get her good reputation in the community. Her family, the male members at least have been part of the law enforcement of the county for years. She is carrying on her family history.

Meanwhile there is what amounts to a security company in another. They are concerned about the toys that have gone amiss so they send Ali and Cami, the owners wife and her assistant to help figure out what has happened. Ali and Joanna gradually learn to work with each other although Joanna is naturally reluctant to let a "civilian" get involved. However Ali and Cami prove their value. Apparently, there are a series written by the author for each of these women, and this is her effort to combine them into one narrative. I think it works well

I recommend it to anybody who likes mysteries with criminals and traitors and all the elements of a good crime mystery. The fact that it is only about 95 pages long (I read it in about 24 hours on the ebook form) makes it even better.

A truck crash is reported to Sheriff Joanna Brady, but the driver didn’t fall asleep. He was shot.

Ali Reynolds is tracking stolen Legos.

The truck scattered hundreds of boxes of Legos when it crashed through the guardrail. And that is how Joanna & Ali ended up working together in this novella.
-----------
All I had to see were the words Joanna Brady and J.A. Jance along with a sale price and two nanoseconds later the novella was mine. I am unashamedly hooked on the Joanna Brady series. You’ll note that I listed Joanna first in the series and honestly, to me, the story involved Joanna more than it did Ali. This title isn’t even listed in the Joanna Brady series, but I would put it as 15.75 — just before Book 16, Remains of the Innocent. It is the first novella that combines the two series.

While only 70 pages, No Honor Among Thieves is packed with action. If you are wondering about stealing Legos, have you purchased any lately? Especially, the large sets. So, yeah — they’re worth stealing.

Recommendation: Do not make this your first book of either series. I have read only one Ali Reynolds book and that was years ago. But I know, as a Joann Brady fan, that a reader won’t get many of the nuances if you haven’t read at least a couple of series. I’ll admit that this novella is for Joanna and/or Ali series fans. For me, it’s still a five-star read.
