Engaged To The Wrong Sister: A Pride and Prejudice Variation

Rate this book
After being soundly rejected by Elizabeth Bennet, a broken-hearted Fitzwilliam Darcy gave in to Anne de Bourgh’s deathbed plea to make her his wife before she died an old maid. Unbeknownst to Darcy, Anne’s imminent death, attested to by her personal physician, was merely a ruse. Trapped in a horrific marriage which ended eighteen months later because of Anne’s irrational behaviour, Darcy is now single once more.

Having given up all hope of ever having Elizabeth, he vows to enter a marriage of convenience simply because he still desires children of his own. Before he can act on his plan, however, he is called upon to perform the duties of an executor for a friend who died unexpectedly. Regrettably, said duties will require him to interact with the Bennet family once again.

Will Darcy be able to face Elizabeth as an indifferent acquaintance or will the allure of being close to his heart’s desire plunge him back into the abyss he had fallen into when she scorned his offer of marriage?

Welcome to my author page; let me tell you a little about myself.

First, I have never followed soap operas, I hardly have time to watch television at all. Thus, if any of my characters match names of soap opera characters, I assure you it is a coincidence. I come up with the names all by myself. Now that that is addressed, I shall move on. "big smile"

I worked for years in the accounting world until I traded my career for life on a small farm. A voracious reader and romance movie aficionada, one day I happened to notice that one of my favorite Jane Austen books had been made into a movie. It was the 2005 production of Pride and Prejudice and I went to the theatre to see it instead of waiting, as usual, for the DVD or online video release. Nothing can compare to seeing this production on the big screen. It captured my imagination and made me want more of these beloved characters or others like them. I began buying all of Jane Austen's novels on Amazon.com and discovered the Jane Austen Fan Fiction genre.

I read everything I could find and then decided to write a story of my own, which was posted on a fan fiction site. A nice response from my readers convinced me to publish the story. I began a forum, DarcyandLizzy.Com, where I post my stories before they are published. It features many other writers as well.

The Wrong Sister, But the Right Love
Brenda J. Webb takes Darcy and Elizabeth down a rather different and difficult path in this multi-trope variation, and there’s plenty of the angst I’ve come to expect from this author. The premise isn’t entirely new to JAFF, but I enjoyed her take on it.

Darcy finds himself in a predicament involving Elizabeth’s ‘most beloved sister’—a sham engagement undertaken out of a sense of duty. As the story unfolded, I must admit that Jane’s increasingly calculating behaviour gave me cause to be wary. She is certainly not the sweet, selfless Jane we’re accustomed to. She’s not an entirely ‘bad Jane’, but she tries to take full advantage of the new circumstances in which she finds herself. Thankfully, she eventually has to admit her mistakes and redeems herself.

Meanwhile, there is much more going on than Darcy’s unfortunate engagement. A murder investigation leads Elizabeth and Colonel Fitzwilliam into some dangerous territory, and it soon becomes apparent that Elizabeth herself is the object of unwanted attention. But who is behind it, and what does he want with her? There are different motives at play, and with Wickham involved, we can be certain that no good will come of it! I had my suspicions along the way, but I still wanted to see how it all played out.

What I enjoyed most, though, was the depth of Darcy and Elizabeth’s love for one another. Even when circumstances and their own sense of duty seem determined to keep them apart, their feelings never waver, although neither is entirely certain of the other’s feelings. It was most satisfying when they finally acknowledged their love was meant to be.

I thought the plot was excellent, with enough going on to keep me interested throughout. My one reservation was that the writing could have been tightened in places, as it does run a bit long. Some situations and characters’ motivations were explained more than necessary, when I felt the dialogue and events had already made things clear. A little less of that would have improved the pacing, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the story.

There are lots of twists, some danger, a good supporting role for Colonel Fitzwilliam, and, of course, a hard-won happily ever after. An enjoyable variation for readers who appreciate a generous helping of angst with their Darcy and Elizabeth romance, as well as a not-so-nice Jane.

Highly recommend!
