As the book opens, Keller explains the difference between Serial Killers, Spree Killers, and Rampage Killers. Then we get the true histories of fifteen different Rampagers, each doing their hunting in different parts of the world. It is worth noting that there isn’t even a mention of a woman who has ever gone on a rampage. This appears to be a male-only activity. I was surprised that I remembered reading about most of these in the papers over the last seven decades. Although they are becoming a bit more common, there really doesn’t seem to be all that many of this kind of murderer versus the other types of killers named above. That is a blessing. At the end of the book, Keller gives a rather short synopsis of another eighteen or so people who also let their rage out of its housing and went wild. I wish that he’d saved the brief remarks for another book on the subject, as details of these massacres just blow one’s mind.
Sometimes when you watch the news you begin to wonder if mass murders are on the rise. You hear so much about school shootings it's easy to believe they are a new and growing phenomenon. As this book explains, school shootings, work place murders, and family and stranger annihilations have been going on for decades all over the world. They occur in countries with stricter gun laws than those of the U.S. so it can't necessarily be assumed that changing laws here in the States would even change anything. This book chronicles many famous mass murders and includes a chapter on Columbine which is the subject of a full length book by the same name which I highly recommend. As always, Keller's writing is superb and makes for gripping reading.
Between the pandemic and DST resets i am so glad books of this caliber are available so readily on my Kindle. After tutoring English as a second language for jocks for a few decades i can't abide other true crime authors whose idea of editing read at the third grade level. Thank goodness and my higher power that I discovered Robert Keller. Well written, empathtic, and well researched. I sometimes forget he's Canadian. Colour is spelled correctly for the frozen north.
Not as good as the other books by Robert Keller. None of the stories felt in depth or surprising I especially didn't like the bit at the end with stories summarised to one paragraph
Very interesting book. The reader will find themselves asking, are these monsters insane or just plain evil. That question may never be correctly answered.
I was not aware there were so many rampage killers, although I knew about several of those featured. These people apparently make detailed preparations for their killing sprees with no intention of facing the consequences of their actions.
It seemed that most of these rampage killers were nursing long-held grudges and didn't care who paid the price besides their targets. The exception was Ronald Gene Simmons who appears to have made a to-do list and, when he was finished, surrendered quietly.
I would recommend this book to other true crime fans.
Not too many books are written about rampage killers so I was glad to find this one. Found out things I didn't know about certain killers. I hope there is a second edition in the works. Would like to know what makes some of these people think murder is the answer. Good author. Good book.
