Junichi: A Boy of Japan

Following Junichi through his school day, his rambling after school walks and his household, the captioned photographs describe a people who are half-way into the 20th century, retaining the best of the old while making use of the new. Junichi lives in a sliding wall house where space is at a premium and cleverly used: a large, labeled diagram shows just how and with which materials. The elaborate courtesies, which are so often overemphasized in books about Japanese children, are largely ignored here, but the disciplined cleanliness of school and home,-- an essential part of living in a crowded society-- is well done. This is the first book I ever read about Japanese life. One could say it was the beginning of my love for Japan.
