Succubus in the City

Rate this book
“Sleek, sexy, and fun.”—Susan Sizemore, author of Primal Desires

After three thousand years of one-night stands, a girl just wants a little more.

Working for Satan is a hot gig. The Devil really does wear Prada, and Lily can sport all the dazzling fashion she desires, eat all the fabulous food she craves, and hang for all eternity with her three demon girlfriends. But serving up bad boys to the fiery pits of Hell is just getting . . . lonely.

Lily gives the jerks, the creeps, and the liars the best (and last) night of their lives, but she’s tired of waking up to a pile of ashes. She wants a guy who will stick around.

But a mysterious man is turning up the heat . . .

Nathan Coleman is a devilishly handsome, laid-back P.I. who wants to ask Lily a few questions about a missing man. But someone—or something—wants Lily and her friends dead, and Nathan seems to know more than he’ll admit to. Can a sweet-talking mortal and a girl from Hell find true love?

Well, I'd love to say I enjoyed this book...but I finished it feeling angry and cheated. There is no HEA, I don't know if there's another book planned, but even so...couldn't SOMEBODY have been happy when the book ended?

I think the author was likely going for a PN version of "Sex and the City". Unfortunately, I wasn't a big fan of Bushnell's book, nor the series. I'm just a fairly well-read, literate, readaholic who wants to feel something pleasant at the end of my escapist reading.

The descriptions of New York City and snobville regarding fashion and all the 'in' things was fabulous. I just wish I was shallow enough to believe those things are really important. That may have made the difference in being able to enjoy this book. I'd like a heroine who was a little deeper than my fingernail polish. I'd like a hero who had more to recommend him than a silver spoon and a great wardrobe. Silly me.

Considering she is a Succubus, I figured the spice would be a little higher than it is. That being said, the story line with the ending: I'm gonna have to finish this series as I have more questions than answers.

Lily is one of the favourite succubus girls working for Prada loving Satan who will do anything to help her girls-but Lily is getting tired of sending every guy to hell and never having one wake up beside her in the morning. Now it looks like somebody wants to kill her and her friends.Just then sexy PI Nathan arrives to discuss her connection to a missing man...
Full of humour, quirky characters and a decent plot this book is the Satanic version of Sex in the City. I loved the idea of Satan as a fashion horse and den mother to her beloved girls! It was a good fun read though I'm not sure whether to buy the rest of the series yet. Will maybe read this again and decide later.

I want to give this 3.5 stars - not quite a 4 star but better than 3 star!!

Have you ever wondered what Sex and the City would have been like if all the ladies were demons serving Satan? Read Succubus in the City where the four friends are all demons in Martha's inner circle who lead modern New York lives while delivering their prey to hell.

Martha? That's Satan at the moment, previously known by other names. Very useful for getting into all the best places in the City.

The central character is Lily, a three thousand year old Babylonian Priestess who is getting sick of only ever having lust. She craves love, problem is she'll turn him to dust unless he pleases her first, makes finding Mr Right difficult. The clause in her contact with Martha/Saturn allows her to leave service if she can find a man who truly loves her and knows what she is. Not exactly an easy task!

Enter Nathan, could he be the one? The plot takes us through twists and turns is he or not. If he is how on earth will Lily be able to get him to truly love her when he knows she's a Succubus? Wait, how is she going to get him to believe she's a Succubus in the first place? Introduce a secret society who is trying to uncover the demons and the plot deepens.

If you are looking for a light hearted paranormal romance which is easy to read it's worth a try. May rove rather tame for some though.

Hmm.. I don't now how to put it nicely. I just finished reading it and I thought it was predictable but actually everything was twisted another way round when what I'd expected doesn't seem to match. This rather be a short review of mine since I don't anything of which if I like or dislike it. Maybe the book is just a so-so for me.

Everything was pretty subtle. It was a fast read and quite entertaining. Actually I was amazed of how a demon works like any other normal people in a daily basis. Wow. Demons live among us, no wonder there's so many bad people around. However, instead of ruining or wreck people's live, Lily's work is only delivers jerks a.k.a bad guys while having sex. I know it sounds gross but there's no erotica scenes in the book. It was done nicely and I kind of like of how Nina Harper managed to make it moderate. I mean, it's OK for everyone to read it. Some said the book similar with Sex and the City but I never read it.

As I read the book, I kept imagining Elizabeth Hurley and Brandon Fraser (oh he so cute!) in Bedazzled. But there's nothing in common. Just imagine that demon traps people to sell their souls and sign contract to hell. There are a few interesting demons like sex demon, greed demon, jealousy demon etc. If you have any of that feeling, then it's because demon is near you. So you are totally not the one to blame. But that's not the point. She's a demon and of course she's lonely when every man dates her become ashes afterward. When she met Nathan, well, it's predictable right? I thought Nathan will be the one who will release Lily being a demon and be her one true love. NO. Nathan freaked out! He's ok at first, but he NEEDS TIME to think. That being said, it's twisted right? The end of it, is quite weird.

The only flaw I I found in the book was the mysterious of Demons Hater @ Knight Defender is quite cliff hanging. It doesn't relate between Lily's being lonely and not turning her man into ashes. Maybe I'll find out in the second book, Succubus Takes Manhattan. Weird thing is, I never know about the 3rd installment. Anyone knows about it?

Okay, yes, it's about a *succubus*, which means I have, perhaps, reached a new low. HOWEVER, this particular succubus at one point randomly decides to go to a Werner Herzog movie to find a pretentious asshole to kill for Satan. So, you know. Perhaps not such a bad read after all. I can't wait for the sequel.

Lily is a succubus in Satan's inner circle. She can only return to mortal life if a human falls in love with her for who she really is, not just the irresistible succubus side.

Which would carry a lot more weight if Lily truly hated her gig, but she doesn't. This book was all kinds of stupid. Shallow characters, sexist views about men, a plot that barely got started, and for a book about a succubus there isn't even very much sex. It tries to be Sex and the City, but is devoid of any charm. Interesting concept poorly executed.

Felt like a ripoff of Sex in the City but with demons.
I never got attached to the story or characters.

This is a rather strange book. First, it approaches things from the viewpoint of those who are generally considered evil; Satan, various demons, and a succubus. Yet the book manages to take this approach and make it not only really fascinating but, at times, extremely funny.

For example, one of the major players in Hell is in charge of airports in the real world. Is there a better explanation for lost baggage, delays, overpricing, etc?

Anyhow, the story centers around Lily, who is a succubus who was originally from Babylon. She and her girlfriends (other demons such as Eros (temptation), Desi (desire), and Sybil (prophecy) love to get together and do some heavy duty shopping and eating at fancy restaurants.

Satan is a woman named Martha.

Lily's job as a succubus is to tempt men to have sex with her. When they orgasm, they burn up into a pile of ash, and their soul goes to Hell. Lily takes men who are obnoxious, and who are nasty if not outright dangerous to women.

As part of her contract with Satin, Lily can get out of being a succubus if a mortal man falls in love with her, knowing what she is, and avoids having sex with her for a month.

Lily has a couple of main problems. One, she wants someone to really love her and she finds a man who does, but wonders how to convince him she really is a succubus and works for Satin, and how will the man react if he even believes her?

Secondly, there is a matter of a bunch of religious fanatics who are out to kill Lily and all of her kind.

There is only one problem with the book, and that is it's the first part of a series (of at least two books). This means neither of Lily's main problems are solved at the end of the book. The book it self, though, has nothing in it to indicate that there is going to be another book in the series (I found out by checking Amazon.com), and thus the reader might judge the book quite negatively for failure to tie anything up.

I find that to be rather hard to figure out. Couldn't the publisher have put some kind of notice in that a sequel was in the works? Very strange.

In a quick, escapist read like this, I expect an ending. None of the plot threads were tied up at all, and my frustration at that has colored my overall feeling for the book. If it had an ending, I could have given it two stars. The characters were reasonably entertaining. It had a few pieces of plot that were moving forward and that I wanted resolution to.

There is a LOT of fashion, and eating, and angst, and hand-wringing, which I would have been okay with if the book had a complete story arc. Now that I see that it doesn't, the whole thing feels like a shallow vehicle for talking about purses, Ben & Jerry's, and all the desserts you can eat if you're immortal and don't have to watch your figure.

In real life, people do spend an incredible amount of time obsessing about relationships and he said/she said and how one single thing might have been taken wrong and where things might be going. And they rehash it and get additional feedback from their friends. And rehash it yet again. It's true to life. But it's not interesting reading. You can really only put on the page about a tenth of the angst people might actually experience without making your characters seem weak, wishy-washy, whiny, irresponsible (How many days can you be late to work without getting in trouble or behind?) and/or alcoholic.

I also have a problem with paranormal books that have main characters who have been alive for thousands of years and still don't seem to get how people work or who act like twenty-somethings with little life experience.

I might have been tempted to take a look at the second book, just to get a few answers (hey, I could skim through the food and fashion bits), but the reviews from that make it seem like there is no ending in sight.

Succubus in the City is for people who know and understand the hotspots in NYC, and appreciate top brand names. Although Ms Harper tried hard to make her main character, Lily, appear to not be shallow, I walked away from this book with all its pretentious name dropping feeling that the character was nothing but a shallow girl whose only care was about how she looked. Seriously, who could read a book where Satan is projected to be a female with classic type taste and really believe that the book was about demons and the lord of the underworld?

Succubus in the City is about Lily the succubus and her desire to find love, when she became a demon she had a clause written into her contract that stated if she found a human to love her that she could once again be human. The whole idea of Lily really wanting to become a mortal has me astounded, this girl is all about the products that only money can buy, and her love for Satan and being in Satan's social circle are all she cares about. I am sure that if she ever did find herself in the position where she could become mortal again that she would suddenly realise just what she would be missing out on, who knows maybe at that point she'd even burn her guy to make sure the temptation was no longer threat!

For those akin to Lily, this book has some action and is a little bit of a detective story, as someone is out to destroy the 4 girls and their wonderful master. However, as it is the first in a series, we do not get to find out who it is that is after them, and need to wait until the next book is read.

Unless you love brand names, all I can say is don't even try to go there.

Review originally published at BookThing! (Reviewed by Tracey Risebrow)

Prepare to see Satan and her demons (yes I said her!) in a totally different light.

Lily lives in New York, has a great job at a fashion magazine and has 3 best girlfriends who are always there for each other. She also happens to be a Succubus; a demon who delivers (bad) men to hell after they have had sex with her. Working for Satan isn’t so bad but Lily is getting tired of seeing her encounters go up in smoke (literally!).

When Lily meets P.I. Nathan Coleman she starts to wonder if he might be the one to release her from her eternal contract (only the small matter of all the conditions Satan set up) but then things start going wrong. Someone or something is trying to kill Lily and her friends. Is Nathan all he seems or is it merely coincidence that he appeared when he did?

This book had me feeling sorry for demons and even liking Satan who was portrayed as a caring boss! However, the demons are quite shallow and can be selfish at times. The plot moved along nicely but I was left feeling cheated at the end, clearly this is one of those sagas where you have to keep buying the next book to get any sort of closure. Unfortunately it was not good enough to make me want to go out immediately and buy the next one so I will probably never read it.

The only thing that kept me reading was the fact it was light hearted and easy to read, nothing too complicated going on. As I read very quickly, I knew it would not take too much time to get to the end.

I thought this book was little more than a harlequin romance novel with a clever title. It took a while for me to really get into it, a good 150 pages at least. The beginning is a lot of fashion & dessert.

However, the plot finally did emerge, and is intriguing. It's a rather fresh idea.
Harpers' writing style is easy to read, though it's a bit repetitious. of redundancy. (To specify - there is a fair amount of what I would consider man bashing, though mild not blatant, mostly in regards to how men treat women twisted into dating 'advice'. Much of it is extremely cliche at that. There is a lot of whining on the part of the main character about not having love in her life. You'd think she expected that, being a 3000 year old succubus and all. I mean really, what did she expect?)
Overall, it's definitely not a 'deep' read. It's just easy, and with the exception of the redundancy, the flow works well. I thought the author did a superb job of not running away with erotic side, given the title. What she did was well written, appropriate, not overdone. There was no real ending which was surprising; I had expected the fairy tale.
It left the perfect setting for the sequel, which I will read when it is released in November. I'd like to see more character development with less whining and man bashing.

Lily is a succubus who works for the Devil who in this case, really does wear Prada. She has fabulous clothes, a great job, caring friends but feels lonely because men only want to sleep with her and not get to know her. Until she meets Nathan Coleman, a laid-back, gorgeous P.I who seems to genuinely like her.

Nathan is looking for a missing man who had Lily's contact information and he wants to know if there's any connection between her and the guy. What he doesn't know is that Lily is a succubus and she specializes in sending guys to hell. Lily doesn't know the missing man at all but she suspects that he has to do with the creepy group of man who want Lily and her friends dead - for real.

From the beginning I had problems with this book. I couldn't click with the main character, Lily, at all. I thought she was a whiny little snot who didn't bother to notice just how good her life was and always focused on the bad. The plot was all over the place and there was more about Lily whining and talking about her accessories than actually any plot at all. Nathan was the only decent character. He was smart and funny and honestly, I think at the end, he made the best decision for himself. I didn't like this book at all and I'm rather disappointed considering the blurb looked good.

Interesting and fun! The heroine characters are beautiful, sexy, and somehow nice in the middle of their demonic jobs. There are many great brands everywhere. Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik, and Chanel. Even the Greatest Satan here wears Chanel and Hermes scarf! ...and She is the only woman I’ve ever seen who makes an Hermès scarf look like a scarf and not an advertisement for the size of her bank account...

However, I'm a little bored in the middle of this book. The problem here doesn't really have the strong roof. I kind of compare this book with Succubus series by Richelle Mead. Problem of Lily (the main character) is easier than Georgina. Lily can have sex with a man without kill him or steal his souls, unlike Georgina. But, she'll kill a man right away after they come into climax. They'll be turned into a dust, which will be cleaned by some cute Satan's subordinate. It kind of surprised me at first. :)

After all, this book is worth as a light-reading. Well, where you can find four kinds of succubus heroines with different temptations: eroticism, desire, greed, and sex?

The supernatural elements were, I thought, fantastic. In this book, there is a slight twist to the mythology behind demons and succubi which I thought was inventive e.g Hell is like a 'department' of Heaven and, just like humans, demons aren't inherently evil.

However, the lack of resolution really brought this book down. I was just about coping with the endless (and often mindless) pages of girlfriend talk in the style of Sex and the City but when the plot is dropped in favour of relationship drama, that's where I draw the line. I don't understand why this was done because the plot was interesting - it's revealed that someone, possibly a high ranking demon, is feeding information (names, whereabouts, hunting practices etc) to a group of demon hunters about Lily and her friends.
Lily and her friends are, understandably, concerned and shocked. Their goal is to start an investigation and find out who is betraying their own kind. Alas, this pesky plot is getting in the way of all the drinking, gossiping and flirting that Lily and gang get up to so the investigation is pretty much abandoned.

On StaticMultimedia.com I gave this 3 stars. Below are some highlights from that review. To read my full review go to: http://www.staticmultimedia.com/print...

Nina Harper dishes up chick lit with a supernatural twist in her novel Succubus in the City. As the title hints, this "Sex and the City"-style story follows the exploits of four fashion savvy New York businesswomen who also happen to be some of the Devil's favorite demons....Harper's novel is an entertaining read, though not without flaws. The first few chapters make for a slow start with repetitive exposition and an overabundance of details about the demons girls' apartments, wardrobes and dining habits. There are explicit sex scenes, but descriptions of fashion and food are more frequent. (Of the seven deadly sins, readers may fall prey to gluttony after one of Lily's many indulgences in wickedly tempting desserts.) Those who love details about New York hot spots, top notch restaurant menus and Manolo Blahnik shoes will not be disappointed.

I gave this book until well beyond the midpoint, but I cannot bring myself to finish it completely.

The repetition was endless. It was like all of sex in the city was boiled down into a super concentrated syrup that was impossible to swallow and extremely unpalatable.

I promise. You can tell me something ONCE and I will be able to retain that information through an entire BOOK. Give me a recap if there's a series and this is the second book. I don't need a recap of anything from page one on page TWO.

Interesting premise with the different types of succubi and with the Devil being female (and literally wearing Prada). The constant repetition of just how high class they all are, how down to earth Satan (Martha) is, how they are at the forefront of every trend and trendy hot spot, and always wearing the height of high fashion was mind-numbing.

If all the excess was edited down to the parts that actually established and furthered the plot, there wouldn't be much over a single chapter left.

Lily works in a fashion magazine by day and is a succubus by (some) night(s). Her girlfriends are also demons. They're all trying to get on with their jobs both in the real and demon world and dealing with the aftermaths of their demonic jobs. Theres also a fundamentalist group looking to stop them.

When Nathan Coleman enters her life Lily is intrigued, then they become friends and she wonders if he would be the one to make her human again.

Entertaining but nothing much, reminded me of Sex and the City, only with men turning into dust. The Label dropping was pervasive, the character didn't have a bath, she used Lush bombs; she never ate another type of ice-cream than Ben & Jerrys and her clothes are annotated. I was a little annoyed at the 3 mentions of the old saw going that a succubus seduces good husbands and pillars of the community, fine, got it the first time but by page 140 it was getting tired. I've read worse though and it did keep me reading.

An enjoyable read, if you liked Sex and the City and The Devil Wears Prada. Sure, the characters are shallow, but they are engaging, and the writing is good. You have to suspend a lot of disbelief--but not all that much more than in the aforementioned books (I have sooo little in common with that milieu). I rounded up from 3 1/2 stars because it was such fun to read--even included a quick tour of Hell, which is a pretty fun place, if you're not one of the damned. And I loved the snooty Bastform (catlike) Akashic librarian with a fondness for Cherry Garcia and Florentine cookies. Of course, all the characters eat lots of Ben and Jerry's. The plot includes a mystery about who is betraying the demons. I was maybe seeing clues where there weren't any, and maybe some of that was due to sloppy writing. I don't know yet, because the loose ends don't get tied up. I hope they do in the sequel, which I will read soon.

This started out with some interesting possibilities and could have been a fun read. But the story bogs down with a plot element that's never quite fully developed. The ladies are in DANGER. There is a traitor somewhere. Oh my. But this just fizzles and ends on an unresolved note. Not cool. The ending is so badly presented that it felt like the book had to end on a certain page number.

I also tired of the endless sexist discussion among the women that there are "rules" about dating that make no sense and feel like petty mind games. "You can't accept a Saturday date on a Wednesday. You can't call a man back on the same day he calls you. You can't show that you're smarter than him on a certain subject." Ewww. Is it 1950?

There's apparently a sequel. Part of me is curious to see if this book's loose ends get wrapped up. But after being jerked around for 200+ pgs, I think I might be done.

Ugh. Painful, very painful. I read a few negative reviews, but thought what the heck! I'll give it a whirl. That was my first mistake. My second was hoping it was comparable to Succubus Blues (Richelle Mead). It wasn't.
Think Sex in the City. I hate Sex in the City. Stupid brand name dropping bimbos with nothing to do but talk about what they want to buy/screw/wear...but I'm off topic.
The book. Right. Much the same. I'm not really a fan of vapid women, in books, tv or reality. I like a little depth, just enough that they become less of cliché, and more like a character that I can relate to in some way. I think it's supposed to be Urban Fantasy-ish, but it's got a definite chick-lit (I think...) vibe to it. Anywho, I guess if you're a fan of Sex in the City, this might be alright, but it just wasn't my cup of tea.

A lighthearted ChickLit Occult novel, made all the more fun since I'm playing a succubus in Threads.

Lily is a succubus who has a few demon girlfriends. Living all those centuries without love really seems to be getting to her, even though her life otherwise is lots of fun. If you aren't too straightlaced when it comes to fiction and religion (main characters include Satan) and liked books like Sex In the City and The Bridget Jones Diary, you might enjoy this book.

Ends with a cliffhanger, be prepared to seek out the second in the series.

I wanted to like this book more since it was a gift, but I felt no sympathy for the main character; she was shallow and whiny and overall just not interesting. The plot was choppy and the book spent more time talking about the apartments, clothes and accesories owned by the characters than the characters themselves. The ending did provide a satisfactory conclusion that I felt was true to the situation, while leaving the possibility for a sequel, but I won't be reading it (unless it is gifted cuz that would be rude:).

I couldn't help but compare this to the succubus series by Richelle Mead as the plot line started off along vary similar lines - lonely succubus looking for love etc but it turned into more of a thriller/who done it type book (although loosely!) rather than straight forward romance. There's no happy ending in this one and it's hard to feel empathy with the characters as it's very much a supernatural sex in the city situation.
It's enjoyable for something to read but not really a book you'd find yourself unable to put down.

This book was, as the title says, just ok. I liked the relationship between the four friends, and I even like how Satan is depicted as a "Martha". But, the ending left me feeling - unfulfilled. There were too many unanswered questions. The ending felt unresolved, and there was nothing that alluded to a sequel. Now, I see that there's a second novel coming out in November, but I would have never guessed with the way the first one ended.

so this book was filled with missed opportunities it could have been really good. Lilly is a succubus and one of satan's "chosen" this book should be about Lilly trying to break her contract with satan or at least her wacky exploits as a succubus. instead it was a book dedicated to chic new york restaurants/food/alcoholic beverages/and ben and jerry's ice cream. and then there was the ending that wasn't an ending basically i felt robbed blind.
