People tell you all the time you can choose who you want to be ... forge the direction of your own path, but what happens when life chooses for you?
Haunted by my past, I’m living my life the only way I know how.
Emotionless. Disconnected. Alone.
A last minute change in assignment puts me in charge of protecting her, Julia Parker, daughter of the wealthiest businessman in Brookedale, New York. She’s attractive, stubborn, and completely closed off.
Worst of all? She’s affecting me in ways I can’t even begin to comprehend.
Being around her is anything but easy. I’m losing focus. I’m questioning things I never would’ve questioned before. I’m forgetting the real reason I’m here.
But when I’m with her, the constant darkness that surrounds me disappears, and the only thing that seems to matter is figuring out why.
*Please note: This book is a companion novel to its predecessor, Moment of Weakness. It is not a stand alone. For maximum reading enjoyment, World of Darkness should NOT be read before reading Moment of Weakness.
***This novel contains adult/mature young adult situations. It is only suitable for ages 18+ due to language, violence, and sexual situations.
Katie Fox was born in Florida and raised in Pennsylvania, where she still currently resides with her husband and son. A hopeless romantic, she is a sucker for a good love story. When you don't find her nose buried in one, she's usually found in her writing cave, giving life to the voices in her head. Since a very young age, writing has been her passion. Katie has a crazy obsession with social media and loves interacting with her fans.
'It's not our pasts that define us, but the way in which we handle them.'
Roman. He makes my heart sigh.
If you're reading this I'm just gonna assume you have already read MoW cause this book really isn't a standalone, you have to read the other first or it'll make zero sense, also its really a great book and there can never be too many of them so there's that too. Anyways, MoW was really Julia's story while Roman tried to steal the show and left us with oh so many unanswered questions. Nothing makes me happier right now than to say that all the questions are answered in this book and then some. To think that this is only the second book from this author is astounding. The talent that shines through from every single page is something rare to find. The author really does seem to have a gift for drawing you in and keeping you gripped from the first page to the last. Do not start this book with plans for anytime soon, not only will you want to read it all in one sitting but you'll likely want to sit for a while when its done and just absorb the awesome before quite possibly going back to the start and reading it all over again.
Now to get down to the nitty gritty. You may have noticed that I have a slight (huge) soft spot for Roman. It started in the first book but this one just completely cemented his position as one of my all time favourite book boyfriends. Without giving anything away cause this is another book that should be read without spoilers, (obviously not counting those from the first book) he was to me, the absolutely perfect balance of cocky and sweet, he let his emotions show when needed and was nowhere near as closed off and hard as he sometimes appeared in MoW, whilst still maintaining everything that makes him 100% alpha. He is by no means flawless and that just adds the extra dimension to his character that helps it spring off the page. Seeing more of him and what helped make him who he is really tugged on the heart strings. Julia was actually a character I liked in the first book but to see her through someone else's eyes (Romans) put a new spin on her character and I actually liked her more this time around. There are many other characters, both new and old that we come across but not one of them falls flat, they all have their part to play and do it spectacularly, no matter how small their role may seem they all helped to keep things moving.
I know some people are not huge fans of POV books but please don't let that put you off in any way cause this book is so much more than that. Yes its almost like a retelling of the other book from Romans pov and there were times that I could match up what was happening in this book to what happened in the first but that was it. There wasn't anything that felt like a simple repetition, it was a new book from a new set of eyes with some intertwining details and so much more. When it was parts that had happened in the previous book it was almost like visiting an old friend.
'Life is full of moments. I can't promise you they will all be good, but I want you to embrace them. All of them, even the sad, scary and weak ones, because its in these moments we figure who we are - who we are meant to be.'
And on that note, I implore you all to go, embrace this moment and buy this book. You won't regret it in the slightest.
World of Darkness by Katie Fox This is the second book of the series and it is Roman’s POV. To read this book, you would have to read the first book” Moments of Weakness” to understand fully what is going on. So you have read the first book and you know how it is going to end, but what you don’t realise is that there is another full story in this book, even though its being told from Romans point of view. Roman is such a broken character and you will devour him and want to place your arms around him. The emotions you feel for this character is unbelievable. You will find out more about his past. How he travelled the road that lead him to be what he is and what he became and what he feels for Julia. What I can tell you is that Ms Fox will put you on an emotional roller coaster with this one. Ms Fox you have definitely become one of my top authors. What I can say is that both books are definitely worth reading and I would highly recommend them. Received an advance readers copy in exchange for an honest review Reviewed for Marebare's Book Shelf
This was a very unique concept, I've never before read a companion book like this in a series. This takes the first book, Moment of Weakness, and showcases Roman's side. It was nice to get some additional background information, though I did find myself skipping over chunks because it was redundant to the original story. I would say I enjoyed MoW better, but it was a nice change of pace and still a great read.
This is the next book after Moment of Weakness and you have to read it first or this book won't make sense. It's written from the perspective of the other main character, Roman, and you get to understand him better. The books are blended well together and it is as enjoyable as the first.
Is it possible to love a 2nd book in a series more than the first ? I believe so.
Straight to the point – if you haven’t read ‘Moment of Weakness’, firstly, what are you doing, go buy it and read, it is wonderful. Secondly, don’t start reading this book until you have, its not a stand alone you need to read the first book, trust me you won’t be disappointed.
Ok lets get started, if you have read the first book then you will know that this is from Roman’s POV and you may be thinking “What’s the point I know how it goes and how it ends” as obviously the ending is a given. What isn’t a given, is the fact that Katie has completely knocked it out of the park. There is a whole new story amongst the story you already know.
Roman is in a World of Darkness, broken to the core and doing all he can to exact revenge and retribution against those who hurt him.
What you get from this book is just how broken he really is, why he does what he does, how he got involved and and how he feels guilt for the love he feels for sweet Julia. Although it runs co-herently with ‘Moment of Weakness’ it feels like his POV in these scenes is not the be all and end all of this book. To be honest that’s the brilliant part about it.
I fell for Roman in the 1st and this book clarified the reasons why. The emotional twist and turns and the clever plots are brilliantly executed and well written.
Loved this... I could totally see (& hope) this being an amazing trilogy! One thing about stand alone books (and I can't even remember if this said it was) sometimes the whole book is about what it takes the couple to finally be together. I get soaked into their story & really enjoy the times they sync & get along--get a fix of the love or chemistry they share. When the beginning is rocky & full of obstacles that fix doesn't ever last long enough & I'm left craving more. This is one of those books. I need to feel their growing pains now that they've decided to go with it. I need to experience more of these 2. There are too many questions that I don't want to imagine on my own. I need to know what happens with Roman, what develops with Vinny, I need 1 or 2 more books that alternate POV's, I need an epilogue that gives us a glimpse of the future they both have envisioned. I need a lot... lol... One thing I know though... when a book leaves me needing I know it had an impact & it was worth every minute of my time. Recommend 100%
People tell you all the time you can choose who you want to be....forge the direction of your own path, but what happens when life chooses for you?
World of Darkness is written in Roman's POV. This book will take you on an emotional rollercoaster ride. In this book you will understand why Roman is the way he is. He is who he is because of his past. And boy it's a doozy.
Roman has become Julia's security detail due to her father having some issues. He falls for Julia. But there are some things Julia doesn't know. And he struggles with telling her the truth.
When he is with Julia, he forgets who he truly his and begins to let his guard down. Big mistake on his end.
I haven't read a book that was written so perfectly in a POV perspective.
This book is not a standalone. To fully understand Romans story its best that you read Moment of Weakness first.
If you haven't read moment of weakness, go read it first. If you have I'm sure you were begging for Romans pov the whole time like I was. The first book was amazing and perfect in every way but it did leave you with knowing very little of Roman. I fell in love with him and needed to know all about him. I was so excited to get my hands and this book and it did not disappoint. There was so much depth to his character and his story. The author blended both books beautifully. You didn't feel like you were reading the exact book at all. Although she did a great job of letting you see moments of weakness also, so therefore you don't have to reread book one to feel like you know what's going on. This author knows how to beautifully portray how dark the world can be. Can't wait to see more from this author.
**Advanced Read** I have read and fell in love with Moment of Weakness and I am so glad Katie came back and revisited the story through Roman's eyes! Heart wrecking, masculine, and I fell in love all over again with Roman! The emotions he felt from both his past and his present were palpable in the air around me as I read. His struggles were real to me and I loved that about this book. It brought so much more to his character and helped me to understand him better. One thing I seem to always find in male POV books written by women is there is a disconnect with what really goes through a man's mind and what his emotions and even his language is like. This was not one of those. World of Darkness made Roman like a real man to me. Wonderful job. I highly recommend this, but only after you read the first one. ;)
This book is emotionally exhausting on every level!
If you've read book 1 in the series "Moments of Weakness" you know how it's going to turn out in the end, but it still doesn't prepare you for the emotional roller coaster this book takes you on.
This is the story from Roman's point of view - and the boy has been through some crap! After enduring a life that would have left anyone broken, hollow and skeptical that there are actually good people out there he meets his next assignment. Well, his next assignments daughter, Julia.
Fighting to keep her safe from the shadows & himself, Roman struggles as he falls in love with the one woman he knows he shouldn't
Fox does an unbelievable job of in sighting every emotion available and you can't help but to fall in love with her beautiful, broken character.
How can you fall in love with a fictional character....because it's Roman, that's how. We first met him in Moment of Weakness and I strongly suggest you read that first to be able to really understand the dynamics of the story. We see the same ending but it's the journey that's so different. This journey is all from his point of view (POV) and what a view it is. He's a broken and complicated man. A man who has been through a dark world starting from a young age. We see and feel all his emotions like we are experiencing them ourselves. We fall in love all over again (and again and again). I was anxiously awaiting this story because even though Moment of Weakness ended well I just needed more. I needed to know who Roman is and why he is the way he is and I'm left even more in love than before.
I'm so glad the the author wrote Roman's POV by the end of the first book you could definitely tell that a lot more was going on behind the scenes. I loved Romans character in moment of weakness (you so have to read that book first!!) but this book just solidified that! He is a strong alpha male that has lived a hard life and made some questionable chooses in his life but he owns them and lives by his own rules when he meets Julia she makes him question a lot of things and also reawakens emotions that he thought died long ago. I loved reading the story again from his POV, we got to fall all over again and maybe just a little harder for a man that is struggling not only with his past but also how he feels for Julia and what it means for them both. So glad Katie Fox revisited this story to give us readers this!! Can't wait to see what Katie Fox puts out there next!!!
I received an ARC Of World of Darkness. I fell in love with Roman in Moment of Weakness, but after this I fell a lot harder for this man. I fell in love the little boy, the adult version, and the man he became throughout the book. It is masculine, in every thought. You know those pangs in your chest, I had so many of those moments reading it. I felt every word. Every detail. Every moment. A must read on my list, and I will definitely read this again and again.
This was an excellent addition to Moment of Weakness. I truly enjoyed getting to see the world and the story through Roman's eyes. I felt his heartache in the words the author beautifully crafted. The emotions were raw and tender like a wound that just won't heal. I have a new love for the characters in this book and Moment of Weakness.
I enjoyed seeing things from Roman's point of view. It is important to note that this book doesn't really stand alone and you should read Moments of Weakness first. While this story didn't really contain too many new elements than book 1, it did add some clarity. I really enjoyed the epilogue as well. Looking forward to more from this author!
I really enjoyed seeing the other POV. This book gives you Roman's POV and I think it really helped with the first book. I will say that I really hopw that there is more of these books. I was hooked on Roman in the first book but this one just made me fall harder for him. The bond that he & Julia has is something so amazing. I can not wait to read more of Katie's books!
I always love alternate POV's, my only complaint is that this book didn't have an epilogue! I'm curious about what could happen with Roman and Julia, and of course with Lacey. Hopefully more to come with this series!?!?!
Well that was worth the read, great to see the story from Roman's point of view, and his struggle to keep Julia away from him. I really enjoyed the story of Roman and Julia, especially the extra bit at the end of the story.
