A coming of age debut novel from The Boondock Saints and Young Indiana Jones actor Sean Patrick Flanery.
A young Mickey navigates through the dense Texas humidity of the 70s and out onto the porch every single time his Granddaddy calls him, where he's presented with the heirloom recipe for life, love, and manhood. But all the logic and insight in the world cannot prepare him to operate correctly in the presence of a wonderfully beautiful little girl who moves in just behind his rear fence. How will this magical moment divide Mickey's life into a "before and after" and permanently change his motion and direct it down the unpaved road to which only a lucky few are granted access?
I'm still really really angry about this book even though it's been months because I really got into it. Like the writing was so good and I loved the narrative and the voice. I was enjoying the characters and I didn't want to put it down at all. Then I got to the end and it was just such a predictable cliched way to end it, like for once I would've totally understood the author having a happy ending to the book because all the build up would have led to it nicely and it would've worked so well. But no we had to have a plot twist that has been done so many times I wanted to gouge my eyes out. The writing was so good though and I'm in love with Mickey.
Jane Two sincerely nestles a place within your heart. Flanery reveals his soul to the world with his affection, vitality, love, regret, pain and admiration for life. The story is an awakening force that shares with people the importance of love and the importance of life and actually living it to the upmost and taking nothing for granted. Live each day and shine your brightest until tomorrow. I was truly touched by this brilliance and this gift that Flanery has shared with all of us. Take the message you receive while reading this book and deliver it into your own lives. You won't regret reading this story, if anything you'll want to start all over again and smile as if you're spending time with an old friend you used to know but would never forget.
I was lucky enough to read Jane Two prior to its publication, and the book completely rattled my cages. Not only did I devour the novel in three hours, I spent my time post-reading racked with sobs.
This is an everyman's book. Every man and woman should read it, absorb it, and let it filter through their bloodstreams. Jane Two will suck you in and make you laugh, then spit you out and make you cry. Rarely have I ever read a book that took me on such an emotional rollercoaster.
I highly recommend this book. Read it, wait a month for your heart to heal, then read it again.
A coming-of-age story of a young boy growing up in rural Texas, Jane Two was a tedious and often creepy read from Sean Patrick Flanery. Told from the perspective of Mickey as an adult, the novel reflects on his experiences growing up in a small town and dealing with school bullies, grief, sports, and romance.
Flanery attempts to keep the tone of the novel appropriate with Mickey’s age, and he is for the most part successful in doing so. But that becomes too much of a good thing, as each of Mickey’s interactions, such as his conflicts with his older sister and confrontations with other boys at school, are approached with a child-like innocence that rings false for someone who is looking back and reflecting on those moments. The snippets of life missed the tone of self-reflection and it lent a very black-and-white portrait to the story that felt inauthentic to real life.
The aspect I found creepy was the romance at the center of the story. It wasn’t so much a romance as it was Mickey’s obsession with Jane, a neighbor who he stalks (he hides in the bushes near her house to watches her for hours, volunteers for Swim because the pool is near her home, films her playing outside her house without her knowing, then obsessively watches it over and over again). Throughout the majority of the novel, the romance is pretty one-sided, but it felt less boyhood crush and more Annie Wilkes.
The parts I found the most tedious were the rants Flanery put in the mouth of the main character’s grandfather, and his attempt to pass them off as wisdom.
In one scene, the grandfather warns Mickey away from certain types of women. After asking Mickey to assess a friend of his older sister’s, described as scantily dressed wearing copious amounts of perfume, he tells Mickey, “That one got the VD right there. All treat and no sustenance. Ain’t got what you need though ya eyes be tellin ya otherwise. A momma for yer babies need to be able to offer ya lots of things that she ain’t never offered no man ‘fore ya… A hussy got her place but the chapel ain’t it.”
Such tidbits of “wisdom” are peppered throughout the novel, with Granddaddy giving thoughts on masculinity, women, violence, homosexuality, and more. I began skipping over these diatribes when they appeared. But the lazy way in which Flanery weaves in gender stereotypes to portray all of the secondary characters couldn’t be skipped—the passive mother who lives to serve, the teacher who lovingly dotes on her students, the man who acts “like a girl.” These characters become one-dimensional props meant to “prove” Granddaddy’s points to be right.
Hateful rhetoric pushed by what the author would have you believe are righteous characters is one of my biggest pet peeves, and will usually cause me to put the book down. In this case, I stayed through to the end because I wanted to find out the answer to the Will-They-or-Won’t-They for Mickey and Jane. The answer is not nearly as interesting nor satisfying as I would have liked, and you won’t miss anything if you skip this one.
DISCLAIMER: I only read 40 pages, but they were enough. Nope, nope, nope. I feel bad giving it one star when it was given to me, but...I can't. The main character irritated me so much, and I couldn't handle the bad writing. Life's too short for less-than-stellar books, y'all.
It has taken me some time to get all my thoughts together. This novel is so much more than a beautiful piece of art. To me it embodies the human condition. I can honestly say I have never read another piece of literature that has moved me the way Jane Two has. The beauty of this novel is that even though it may be in the fiction genre; everything it encompasses is this thing we call life. What I love so much this story, is that It doesn’t shy away from the truth in life. Life isn’t always rainbows and you have to work hard for what you want. This story shares the good, the bad, and the ugly.
While reading Jane Two, I felt like I was transported to another time; I felt every experience as if it was happening to me. Even though I may not have had the exact experiences the character Mickey has; I’ve had similar ones. Jane Two has brought back so many memories of my youth and everything that went along with it: the trials & tribulations, my first love, heartbreak, & even tragedy.
Sean Patrick Flanery’s Blog ShineUntilTomorrow.com is what introduced me to what an incredible story teller he is. With that being said I never thought I’d still feel the way I do days after reading this novel. Do yourself a favor a buy a copy of Jane Two; you won’t be sorry. This story stays with you; that’s the beauty of it. I have already order another copy because mine currently has wrinkled pages from my tears.
I want to thank Sean for bearing his soul and sharing this with the world. You have ignited a spark in me that I didn’t even know was there. The importance of life, love and being brave is essential to truly being alive. Sean, you’ve inspired me with your blog, but this novel has truly been a gift. I’m so proud of you and I cannot wait to read your future novels.
Jane, My Grandaddy says that the first half of finding happiness yourself is giving it to someone else. So I just wanted you to know that you're halfway there.
*Also the cover artwork was brilliant in all that it symbolizes <3
Jane Two was an amazing and heart wrenching story of true love and taking chances. Sean Patrick Flanery's debut novel was inspiring. He truly is a man of many talents and if this novel is a taste of what he has to come, I can't wait to see what more he has in store for us.
Jane Two was interesting but because of the language I just can't recommend it. I will say that the crass southern Grandpa is a spot on depiction (I had one so I know) but again he drops the f bomb way too many times for my tastes.
I would have liked the story to be tightened up and the language cleaned up a bit. The story just droned on through the elementary years taking up the majority of the book. Then almost abruptly we see Mickey in high school, college, and adulthood in just a few chapters. When you come to the end of the book you realize that he has loved Jane this whole time. I just wished that there was more time spent developing that.
While I was not thrilled with this book I did finish it and I would probably give the author's next book a try. His storyline idea was interesting but just too fragmented and base for my tastes.
Most people know you from Boondock Saints. But not me. I'm the sort that watched Simply Irresistible a zillion times. You, along with Sarah Michelle Gellar, always brought a tear to my eye and a smile to my face. I first saw you in Powder. I only saw that movie once and I cried so hard...It's never left my mind or my soul.
The problem I'm having is how should I review this book. I'm not sure I can do justice to this book with a basic review. I feel like I should talk to you face to face about this character, Mickey. And his Grandaddy. That rotten sister of his....Kevin, her boyfriend. I could keep listing characters I want to talk about as they were all written very well, written as though they were true-to-life individuals. It was as if I knew them personally.
I just know my words aren't going to be enough. It wasn't just a story you were telling. It was as though you were sharing a piece of your soul. I laughed at places. I got teary, eventually crying towards the end of the book. Highly relatable and so heart-warming. I do wonder how much of this book is truly real.
The writing--and I never comment on someone's writing as we are all different and unique in style as writers, reviewers, and authors...The writing was superb. The way it was presented...it reminded of The Body or Shawshank Redemption. Very Stephen King in they way the story was told without the macabre. So true to the character and the emotions. that's the only comparison I can come up with. It outshines a typical famous person writing a story. (To me anyway.)
This book will go down as one that I will probably read once. But just because I say that doesn't mean it's horrible in any way. (I already added it to my absolute favorites shelves.) Much like your Powder, it's a story that will stick in my head, my heart, my soul....for the rest of my life. I know I am going to go back and underline, highlight my favorite quotes. I know I am going to go back and read over parts I loved. I know I am going to hold onto my copy forever.
I'm so glad I never gave up my search for it. I'm so happy I asked the woman at the bookstore where it was since it wasn't on the shelf. I'm so thrilled I waited as she searched for what felt like an hour.
This is going down as one of the best books I've read this year. And maybe one day, I'll run into you and can have you sign it. Thank you for a wonderful story with a beautiful soul.
To everyone else,
Please go find a copy of this. I cannot recommend Jane Two highly enough. I'm left without adequate words to say anything other than...It's worth a read.
Flanery's no holds barred account of a young boy's navigation through life, love, and loss sent me spiraling into an emotional purge. I laughed. I cried. I felt anger, excitement and pride. The familiarity and warmth of the characters made it seem as if you were merely spending time with an old friend. From beginning to end, I was completely invested in the story. I was torn between not being able to turn the pages fast enough and wanting it to never end. The fluidity of his writing kept me locked in the moment. The imagery was so vivid it was easy to be transported to a different place and time. You can practically smell the Texas air and Jane's intoxicating spice. The constant, dependable soundtrack only accentuates the reminiscent tone of youth. He captures all the little moments. The ones that really matter. The exhilaration and insecurity of love. Seeing your heart's desire and suddenly they're the only thing in focus. The eye opening but inevitable lessons that life teaches us. Learning how to navigate the world and growing into the kind of person that can some day instil the same knowledge into future generations. The book is filled with situations that make you stop and think about your own life. The complexity in its simplicity is brilliant and refreshing. I cannot recommend this book enough. I implore you all to read. Sean, and the book, are so much more than what you think. He's not just some actor who wrote a book. He's a man with a stunning mind, an unparalleled ability for story telling, and an astonishing amount of courage. With this book, he's put a piece of his soul out there for us all to see.... Trust me, it's worth it <3
This is one of those books that stays with you forever. My mom had wanted to read this and she told me she thought I would love this book and wow....Sean Patrick Flanery really knows how to speak to the soul. I highly recommend this to pretty much everybody. I cannot praise this enough. This is probably one of, if not, my favorite reads of this year and the year just began. Seriously, though, from the moment I began reading, I found myself in the adventures of Mickey and his most awesome and faithful dog, Steve McQueen. It made me fondly think of running through the woods, years ago, with my own Golden Retriever, Hogan, and splashing through the creek in the summers as I met my girlfriend, halfway between her house and mine. Going on the journey with Mickey, as he wrote all those letters to Jane, his loyalty to her, all that time, all those years....We've all had childhood crushes but this book isn't about a childhood crush. This novel is about love, loss, family, personal growth, making friends, losing friends, moving on, not moving on, and the wisdom that was Mickey's amazing grandfather. Do yourself a HUGE favor. READ this book. If you've ever loved a dog, read this book. If you've ever had a best friend, read this book. If you've ever loved someone with cancer, read this book. If you've ever had a weird family, read this book. If you've ever had a crush on someone with super cool shoes, read this book....I'd give it 20 out of 20 stars if I could.
There are very few times that a book can touch the inner most crevices of your heart and soul, and Jane Two defies all rules and will make you feel with every ounce of your being. I long for words that come together in books such as this - as they are too far and few between. I absolutely could not put this one down…there are no words to describe the beauty of this book. Its raw essence explores all the wonder, fears and challenges of growing up, and conveys exactly what it was to transition into adulthood having no idea what the hell you were doing.
Sean, I don’t know how you did it, but there were moments…even single words that felt as though you pulled them directly from my life. This book is a rarity…I can see parts of myself in each and every character from Jane, to Mickey, to Kevin, to Firefly and even to Lilyth. Their insecurities, movements and thoughts are exact. You touched old memories, fears and tears that were not forgotten but dulled and brought them all back to life for me. To say that I wait impatiently for your next work of art would be a drastic understatement. I thirst for your thoughts and your words and I know that your next story will be equally as epic as Jane.
Actor Flanery’s first novel suffers from an incredibly slow plot, which never truly gains momentum. An extreme amount of gratuitous profanity makes this book impossible to recommend for the inspirational audience. The ending is heartwarming, but most of the tale is plodding and dull. Growing up in mid-1970s Texas, Mickey’s life is full of ups and downs. His grandfather’s sage words and advice help him to make decent choices, but Mickey’s attention is mostly focused on Jane, the girl who moves in next door. Over the years, Mickey pursues his life and admires Jane from afar, sending her undeliverable letters that get returned. It’s only after he reaches adulthood and gets perspective that Mickey realizes the impact Jane has had on his entire life. - See more at: http://www.rtbookreviews.com/book-rev...
There are very few books that stop the world and allow you to reminisce the memories you wish you had. This one did that for me. The grandfather was surly but honest and looked after your best interest because he loved you. The dad that saw the bigger picture, past your failures, and remained tough at all the right times. The mother that was willingly blind because the love for her kids was bigger than her criticisms. The grandmother that was kind, loving, and patient enough to put up with it all. The life lessons that we're passed on to a boy by a calloused but kind hand. And lastly, the unseen love of the neighbor girl that measures all women for eternity. Did I like this book? What an understatement that would be. 'Jane Two' was living the childhood memories that I wish I had. A true gem indeed.
This was a most unexpected book, found by complete accident, devoured in two days. I read a lot of books, but not too many touch me the way this did. It was that good. Go out & get yourself a copy, Sean Patrick Flanery is a genius!
I really quite enjoyed this book and really liked the MC Nick, he was really relatable but overall just told a great story. I was definitely not expecting to like this as much as I did and I just feel it left a bit of an imprint on me. The end just got me right in the heart. Great Read!
In Jane Two, A novel, Sean Patrick Flanery weaves a beautiful poignant story of growing up in a small community in Texas. We are transported to the 1970’s and we learn all the lessons that one needs to learn from our main characters Grandaddy, many of them very hard to swallow, some that shape your life forever.
Who says an 8 year old can’t fall in love…
Sean weaves a tale so detailed that we know the neighbourhood like it was our own, and we can picture the characters in our mind, right down to the smell that wafts in the room when they enter. Mickey grows up, trying to find his place within his community, his circle of friends, his school, and in Jane’s life. You route for him when he plays football, joins the swim team, and speeds around the neighbourhood trying to break his speed records, and especially when he builds up the courage to knock on her door. And you cry for him when life doesn’t always go as planned, and hard lessons are learned with the throw of a punch, or an opportunity that is missed. As he grows up, he is eventually distanced from his home, but everything that shaped him as a child comes rushing back with such devastating force that it hits you right smack in the chest, and takes your breath away.
Deep down everyone is just looking for that one love, pure, uncomplicated, earth shattering, simple, quiet love that moves us forward and makes our life better, Mic finds it as a young boy, and knows exactly what it is, it is Jane ….
Sean put his heart on every page and it is perfection
I had the good fortune of getting Jane Two on April 20, 2016 and the very next day meeting Sean Patrick Flanery and his adorable mom, Genie, at his book signing at Blue Willow Bookshop. I hadn't read the book, and quite honestly, wanted to, but not wanted to, for the simple reason that I'd read the excerpt and knew I would be upset it was over. And I was right.
I finished Jane Two in 6 hours. I laughed a bit. Got upset a bit. And cried quite a bit. This was wonderfully well-written and very easy to become immersed in. The way Sean wrote felt like he was speaking to friends. He captured my attention quickly and didn't let go, once. You really won't want to put this book down.
There was a question posed to him at the book signing, and it was along the lines of "What do you want your readers to take away from your book?" He'd said there wasn't anything specifically, because he'd written this for himself. Events have happened in my life where I look around and wonder if anyone else has ever been affected so much, and the answer is yes. The experience of others in writing is drastically different than hearing it verbally. It's easier to identify with the emotions in black and white than spoken word. Sean's Jane Two is the first written work to help me see that. I can't take his experience for myself, but I can take away that everyone has had an experience, or a time in their life where the feelings are similar. It's sometimes just not as easily expressed verbally as it is on paper.
There are books that touch my heart and stir my emotions. There are novels that amuse me and fill me with fond remembrances of childhood days gone by. There are stories that are “must-reads” for their pure literary genius.
Jane Two is all this and more.
Jane Two is that one book every reader searches for, that special story that stays with you for a lifetime. It is that rare novel that fills my eyes with emotional tears days after I finished the final word. Jane Two makes me ache with sentimentality for my youth, for that one true love that every person on this planet dreams of finding.
Sean Patrick Flanery writes with the emotion of a person who lives what his granddaddy preached. He opens his heart, mind and soul with this book and he gives the reader a rare treat by introducing us to the characters that define him as a man. I read this book slowly in an attempt to savor every word, every morsel, as the author painted a vivid picture of a young man coming of age and discovering the love of his life.
Jane Two does not disappoint. I laughed out loud more than once and I shed tears as my heart ached for those missed opportunities and what might have been. And when I was done with this beautifully woven story, this incredible legacy, I did what I have never done before. I immediately read Jane Two again.
Jane Two is a book I will cherish and hold dear to my heart, for as long as my heart beats.
I was eagerly awaiting the release of Jane Two, wondering what Sean would have in store for us. After finishing it, I can tell you, I was NOT disappointed. Jane Two, set in Texas in the 1970’s, is truly an emotional, personal moving story. From the lessons taught on the porch by his Granddaddy, about life, love and being a man, to finding his place amongst his peers in school and his neighbourhood and to his first sighting of Jane, his beautiful unicorn, bouncing on that trampoline over his backyard fence, Sean takes us on such an intimate journey through these impressionable years that shape all our lives. Sean’s writing is so honest you feel, hear and experience the power of all his emotions while reading this wonderful book. Many times I laughed out loud, only to be brought to tears in the next paragraph. I cannot wait to see what he shares with us next. Shine on, my friend.
I don't believe I was properly emotionally prepared for this book, in all the best of ways. Jane Two swooped in unexpectedly, and took me by surprise in all the ways that it captured my heart. Sean Patrick Flanery has an uncanny ability to remind you of all the important moments in your life and reflect on some of them a little differently, even those long forgotten. As you journey through the pages of this wonderful story he graciously shakes you out of the monotony of what every day adulthood has become, and reminds you of what it's supposed to feel like to be alive. I began this book as a person who had lost sight of who I am, and though I still don't have answers, I finished this book with direction, with hope, and with an excitement for my life that had been diminished over the years. I encourage anyone that feels as if their life has come to a stand still to immerse themselves inside the pages of Jane Two.
I was mesmerized from the very first sentence all the way to Amen. Jane Two made me want to revisit the days of my youth when life was starkly black and white, to the point, and unclouded by the haze of adulthood. Sean's words whisk you away to a magical time when our young minds are open and fresh to learn the lessons that will shape us into who we are to become. Sean's debut novel is a beautifully written return trip back to youth, full of love, heartbreak, trails and triumphs. This story is loaded with wise gems that should be passed along to each and every generation to come. Thank you, Sean Patrick Flanery, for sharing your rock solid values and "Grandaddys Law" with me. Both will become valued learning tools in my family forever. and as always, Shine...Until Tomorrow!
Read this book ASAP! It will shock you and make you cry. You won't forget it and if you are like me you will not be able to put it down. When he was talking about Jane it was surreal because i loved someone that much once still do if i'm honest. the way he describes the atmosphere changing when jane was around floored me been there felt that. I got absorbed in this book. The main lesson I think is if you love someone tell them now. Brilliant book Mr.Flanery thanks for sharing some of your soul with us.
A heartfelt love story that pulls on every string as if they were your own. I found this book to be very honest, extremely relatable, with strong values, lessons, and morals that seem to rarely exist. One's heart can easily fall in love with Jane, by simply turning the pages, as their heart bleeds for Kevin and ache for Charlie. Thank you, Sean, for sharing your journey and taking me on this trip that I feel I will never forget. Always believe, and keep checking that box.
With the exception of a few recounts that went on a page or three too long, this book was fabulous. It was like sitting with a friend, it's late at night and they are giving you a fantastic deep and meaningful insight into the highlights of their life. I loved how original the delivery was. I do not agree with the ending but I won't elaborate on that because that would most definitely be a spoiler!i won't be forgetting this story any time soon.
It was an amazing story!! I laugh, smile, and cry. A phenomenal writer my dear friend/mentor Sean Patrick Flanery. Great job. Audiobook was amazing! Congrats Captain! #1 Best Seller!! & my favorite novel of 2016! Thank you for sharing your journey with us! Love you! God bless! Shine Until Tomorrow
I deeply enjoyed this unique and unapologetic debut novel. It’s crass, and heartfelt at the same time with intense and important life lessons weaved in. It’s also highly relatable as I think we all secretly have a Jane on some level. I hope Sean Patrick Flanery continues to write more powerful words, as I am looking forward to reading them.
A surprisingly sweet coming of age novel. The characters are loveable (except the evil sister) and well developed. Despite the abundance of curse words, there are some deep rooted life lessons embedded in the story. I highly recommend this audio version read by the author himself.
Everyone – whether they acknowledge it or not – has a soundtrack that plays through the story of their life. Lord knows I have a triple anthology. JANE TWO is Mickey’s soundtrack.
Mickey falls in love with Jane at the tender age of 8, and their parallel love for music could just be the thing that binds them together – really together. But it doesn’t. Or does it? It sure does its damned-ist to keep his heart focused on her – all through the years.
A love story is the at the center of this coming of age gem – where our hero battles the ups and downs of life – taking the wisdom from his Grandaddy with every blow and every achievement. Set in the early – mid 70’s – a time when things were stated a bit more “frank” than now – a time when truths were truths and a lie was a lie. A time of “movements” when very little stayed grounded. I rooted for Mickey – for Jane – for Kevin – for Firefly – and for Lilyth, then applauded that they had influence to look to in their elders. Even Genie, Mickey’s mother – who – even though she may not have felt it deep down – gave mantra to “everything is fine”. A woman of very little words – but she evoked enough.
Sean Patrick Flanery delivers a nostalgic bleeding for those of us who grew up at that time. Reminding us that you are never too young to feel real love – want real love – or give real love – and that the definition of Puppy Love is well, BULLSHIT. Because – when you know, you just know. It will certainly make you wonder if you have ever been, already are, or ever will be someone’s Unicorn – their more than half – deserving of the Bull Yawn. And Sean’s delivery is contained in this soundtrack that encompasses every element – where he sings the lyrics of Paul Simon, Donovan, Ronnie Van Zant and Marc Bolan (to name a few) without even reciting the words. Beautifully written in a voice no other than his own. Kudos, Mr. Flanery. Well done.
