Catherine is a detective, looking for the murderer of two young women. She is certain that their mutual lover, Nicholas, is their murderer but has no hard evidence. After she pushes to hard, she finds herself removed from the case and placed on leave.
Determined to solve the case, she accepts an invitation from Nicholas to join his harem and find the answers to her questions. Catherine agrees, certain she'll prove his guilt. What she finds is anything but straightforward.
Before long, Catherine has fallen in love with Nicholas and changes course. Once certain of his guilt, she's now certain of nothing but his innocence. The suspects are many, she's just got to figure it out to clear Nicholas.
Although the book was set in present time, it felt like a historical romance. Perhaps it was the idea of a harem or the overly formal speech patterns, but I kept having to reorient myself because I felt like I'd gone back in time by a hundred or more years. At times this was a little distracting, but nothing too major.
Much of the book seemed preposterous to me. Yet, I enjoyed every minute of it, far-fetched or not. This wasn't my usual type of story, but I thought it was very good. Overall, I give it 3 1/2 stars!

This was a great story! It had a bit of everything! Mystery, passion, romance, suspense! The writing is direct and vivid. Everytime I thought the book was getting a bit boring, something was happening and it had my full attention. I really had difficultied to put it down.
The book is written from Catherine's POV and it's nicely made. There is a healthy balance of doubt and passion. Catherine is a great character and her personality was really nicely thought and written.
Nicholas was a great alpha in this book. He had the control of everything and I have to admit that I couldn't decide if I like him for the most part of this book. I had serious doubts about him.
There were points in the story that I miss a bit of information or action and that's why I took away a star. I would like to know for example more about the background of each mistress of Nicholas or about his sister. I would like to know a bit more about him as well.
The end was great! I really loved it! There was also an epilogue that was a sweet closure of this story!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.
I usually give a little description of the book before I start my opinion but I have to tell you that I LOVED THIS BOOK! I would give it more than 5 stars if I could!
The story is set in England. Catherine is a police officer, or copper as she says, lol. She is a widow of less than a year, her husband James was on the police force and was killed in the line of duty. No one really knows that her marriage was over and that he was planning on leaving.
She has been investigating the deaths of 2 young women and she is sure that Nicholas Redthorn is guilty of the crimes as both of the victims had been his lover at some point. Once again she has interrogated him and he calmly denies he had any involvement in their deaths.
Nicholas can prove his alibi and she is ordered to release him. Her boss is very upset with her and tells her she has no proof and can't keep accusing him. He removes her from the case. He also stresses that maybe she didn't take off enough time after the death of James, her husband.
Soon after, Nicholas has a meeting with her boss and basically says he may sue for Catherine's harassment of him over this case. Her boss decides Catherine needs time off to get her act together (as she never really grieved) and puts her on leave for 6 months. She is very angry but can't really do anything about it.
A few days later, Catherine receives an invitation from Nicholas. It tells her that if "she wants to know the truth, then meet him tomorrow night @ 8pm". This is beginning.......
Catherine is very beautiful but not feeling it since her marriage was failing and her husband was unfaithful. Catherine is very vulnerable at this point in her life. She has a good friend Olivia and her brother Brandon but since she hasn't told them everything about James they can't really help.
Nicholas is handsome, rich and powerful He was a "show" child though. His father was working all the time and this mother a cold woman who only wanted him around when she wanted to impress her rich friends. This poor guy doesn't even really understand what love is.
There isn't much I can say because I don't want to give anything away. This book has to be read....it is very subtle and then it's like you were hit in the head. As a woman, there are 2 things (OK, 3 if we include my hard earned money) a woman doesn't trust easily with, her heart and her body. I know for me this is very hard and many of us have had experiences to make us feel that way.
So there are "5 steps to the harem": Expectation, Consideration, Commitment, Realization and Fulfillment..The book splits the chapters under these steps. Maybe this is really the formula to happiness: What you expect, How to accomplish, Committing yourself, Realizing what can and cannot be done and Getting the fulfillment you deserve.
The murder investigation is done very well and has a few twists and turns. There are several issues happening at once so every time I thought I figured it out, it would twist on me and prove me wrong!
There is lot of steamy sex in this book but why Nicholas thinks he is doing all the teaching...he is also learning even more. Like I said, it's subtle.
This book really needs to be read to show why it enamored me so. One character I loved was Mona and would love to read more about her.
This book was amazing. It had everything I love in a book, sex, greed, mystery and drama. And last but not least romance and a happily ever after. The author does a good job of keeping you on your toes. Because I didn't know who to trust. When all is revealed in the end, I was stunned to find out who really committed the crimes. I do know that from the beginning, Lord Redthorne truly had a thing for Catherine. I felt his feelings were genuine. But was he a murderer? Awesome and spellbinding book. One of the best, I've read in a long time.

I was not sure what to expect when I started reading Five Steps To The Harem. The synopsis had intrigued me, so I was curious to see where the story would take me.
Five Steps To The Harem was so much more than I thought it was going to be.
Catherine has been chasing down Nicholas Redthorn for months - in her capacity as a London cop. There has been so much happening in her life the past 12 months, and she is completely focused on them "getting their man"
Nicholas Redthorn is not what she expected at all. When he tempts her with an indecent proposal, things start to really heat up. But he is a big ol' riddle wrapped up in an mystery inside an enigma. I just could never tell if he was the good or the bad guy.
And I didn't until A.M Helen wanted me to know. Then it was like "woah! I was not expecting that!" - which is good, because I don't like to have been able to have picked it! I want to be surprised, shocked, taken back.
There are 5 steps to the harem - Expectation, Consideration, Commitment, Realization and Fulfillment.
These could be chapters of Catherine's life. As the story progresses we see her coming to terms with things in her past and present, and looking towards her future. It is as much a voyage of self discovery for Catherine as it is a murder mystery.
A.M Helen is a new to me author, but I will definitely be reading more in the future.
Five Steps is quite a difficult book for me to review. I found it quite cumbersome and slow at times and if felt like a book that didn't really know what genre it was aspiring to be. Part crime thriller and part erotic romance it was a bit like 50 Shades meets Rizzoli and Isles.
Catherine is newly widowed and throws herself into a murder investigation trying to find the killer of two young women. Her primary suspect is the arrogant and handsome Lord Nicholas Redthorne. After a number of police interviews with him she is placed on compassionate leave after he complains about police harassment. At this point Nicholas sends her an invitation to become part of his harem. At this point it all goes a bit 50 Shades with concubine contracts and hard limits. And I got a bit bored. I didn’t find Lord Nicholas sexy or interesting. He was just a bit of a twat really. Catherine didn’t feel “right” either. It felt like it would be really out of character for her to agree to something like that out of the blue.
Her convictions seem to be swayed far too readily and is soon brain washed into accepting Nicholas is innocent. Of everything. Ever. The language seems a bit stilted too. It makes it feel a bit old fashioned and odd. The way that Nicholas talks just made me laugh out loud at times and I don’t think that was the desired effect. If you are after a romance story with quite a lot of erotica thrown in you’ll think this is wonderful. It didn’t quite hit the mark for me and it was a struggle to get through it.

This is the most perfect erotic ROMANCE I've ever read.
Nicholas...perfect yet flawed, strong yet vulnerable, surrounded by sex yet lonely. He was a wonderful and compelling dichotomy. I LOVED how much he needed Catherine, how deeply he fell for her. Catherine was the perfect mix of strength and gentleness.
The secondary characters were great, adding the right amount of depth and background to the story.
The older I get the less appealing an alpha male is to me, I enjoy strong males who don't need to flaunt their need for control of all things. I don't enjoy the aspect of " you don't need to know, you just need to trust me." ... There are some exceptions as far as story goes.
This being said this book is more like a 3.5 stars for me, because the story is intriguing to say the least. Catherine Moore is a newly widowed detective in England who is working a case involving Lord Redthorn who is a suspect in a double homicide and it just so happens the two victims are part of his harem.
Catherine is disgusted and yet intrigued by him from the start, she becomes obsessed with pinning this murder on him to the point her boss gives her leave. That's when she decides to take Nicholas Redthorn up on his offer and delves into his harem to see if she can't figure things out.
She figures things out, but also discovers quite a bit about herself and finds herself entirely lost to Nicholas.
While the story is intriguing, the romance to it is... A little off for me. They're both obsessed with one another and the way they clicked was fairly insta love which seemed displaced for me. The more things begin to develop the worse this feeling gets to me.
However, the side story of her husbands cause of death and how that wraps up with Redthorn's story is quite interesting, a lot of twists here and then the ending... You don't quite see that coming.
Catherine is forgettable though, she's wishy washy and inconsistent.
I will say this though, I did read it straight through and it kept me engaged.
The following review is the result of a complimentary copy of the above book, via NetGalley.
Five Steps to the Harem follows DI Catherine Moore as she investigates the rich and powerful Lord Nicholas Redthorn, who she believes has killed three women. She repeatedly hauls him in for interviews, during which he denies everything and instead behaves in a sexually aggressive manner that both infuriates and entices her. When she's told to take a leave of absence, she goes after Redthorn by becoming his 'mistress,' one of several women who collectively make up his harem. In the process, she discovers who the killer is, and what Redthorn has to do with the recent death of her husband.
I liked the storyline of this book - admittedly, I enjoyed reading about Catherine's 'sisters' more than Catherine herself, though the investigation kept me interested in her relationship with Redthorn. The ending was predictable, and perhaps a touch "happily ever after" - not my cup of tea, but it tied up loose ends nicely.
One quibble I have with this novel is Redthorn's dialogue - I understand he is a Lord, born and bred English, but it was difficult to picture anyone, let alone him, speaking the way he did. And curiously, his dialogue at the beginning was much more believable compared to the end.
Overall, this book had many of the elements I enjoy in a good erotica - tension filled situations (particularly at the beginning), angsty internal dialogue, English accents, and female friendships.
Received copy from Net galley to review. The title to this book does not envelope the total range of its narrative. It is a deep study of our main characters Catherine and Nicholas. The five steps are Expectation, Consideration, Commitment, Realization, and Fulfillment. These steps were explained to Catherine so that at the end of the contract she would TRUST Nicholas in all things. Catherine is a police detective who has just lost her husband and is struggling it and the pressures of work to solve two related murders. For some reason not really explained her main suspect is Nicholas. When Catherine is given a leave of absence from work because of her narrow view in the case she seeks another avenue to solve the mystery. When Nicholas offers her a contract to join his harem, Catherine accepts because he promises to reveal secrets he has on the case. There are many twists and turns before all is revealed at the end. No cliffhangers in this book just a great Romance and Mystery. A.M. Helen has a smooth flow to her writing and makes the characters endeared to the reader. These five steps could explain overcoming challenges in many situations.

This book started of really great. Catherine is investigating two murders and she has zeroed in on Lord Nicholas Redthorn. I almost thought for a second this was going to be another 50 Shades knock off, so happy it wasn't.
There is a point in this book where it just started to drag for me. The pace seemed to be getting slower and slower and Catherine looses herself in Nicholas. I normally like reading D/s books but I was starting to find her lack of backbone pathetic.
The ending shocked me. I never picked up on who was killing the ladies until it was revealed. Major plus!
Overall this book was good. The writing style isn't my favorite. A bit descriptive and almost poetic at times. I think I would have enjoyed it more if it would have moved at a quicker pace. But, the sex was pretty darn hot!...Sara
Expectation, consideration, commitment, realization, and fulfillment are the Five Steps of Harem. I received this novel as an Arc. Over the last several years I have moved more towards the murder/suspense novel and this one didn’t disappoint. Catherine, the detective had to find the murderer of two women who had a connection with Lord Nicholas Redthorn. Because of her focus on this man, she was suspended from the case. She wanted nothing to do with the sexual advance thrown her way by him but in the same thought she wanted his hands on her. No longer on the case, Catherine placed herself in his harem, one of many, to solve the murders of Lord Redthorn dead mistresses. What connection did he have to the dead girls and her husband? I won’t tell but read and find out.
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.......This was ok but it could've been better. I enjoyed the characters in this book and the ending was a shocker for me but I had a hard time swallowing the fact how easily Catherine fell for Lord Redthorn. It was a too soon for my taste. I know she was trying to put on a facade but it didn't last very long. Also, the women in his harem? Beyond unbelievable. Plus, he was a bit creepy; after she found his secret "lair". How could she not be turned off by that? How do you excuse that? I understand his reasons behind it but it was a bit too much in my opinion. Overall, it was a good read full of intense and sexy moments but there were a few parts that left me saying "huh?".

Oh my gawd....what to say about this book! I was hooked from the first page until the very end. The more I read, the more engrossed I became and had to reach the end to find out who the culprit was, which my opinion kept changing the more I read and was introduced to the other characters. In my opinion, there is not a dull moment at all in this book, between the hot steamy sex, the jealousy, and searching for the murderer of two young women, the reader is kept on their toes. If you're a fan of erotica and thrillers, then you do not want to miss out on reading Five Steps to the Harem.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is the story of a detective who is determined that she has found the killer of 2 women, although there is no evidence and nobody else believes her. When she is handed 6 months leave to grieve her husband, who died 7 months ago and whom she has not mourned properly, and also invited to be a concubine by the man she suspects she decides to do some undercover work on her own and find out the truth. I highly recommend this book and will look out for others by this author. ARC from NetGalley for an impartial review.
Catherine is a police detective and trying to discover who murdered two young woman. She believes that Nicolas a man they both were involved with is the guilty party but when she crosses the line she is removed from the case and suspended. She receives a note from Nicolas to meet her if she wants to learn the truth and she learns much more than that. Lots of drama and suspense, plenty of twists and turns to keep you interested throughout and very steamy. I really liked it.
This is a murder mystery hidden within a woman’s discovery of her submissive nature. I enjoyed both aspects of the book. I’m actually quite horrible at murder mysteries, so the ending was a surprise for me. Although, I’m pretty sure others may figure out the mystery way before I did. I didn’t get bored of it at all. Some times I wish writers would speed up the plot, but this one was just right. Recommended.
This was different from anything I've read. But I enjoyed it. I wish the plot line of Catherine trying to solve the murders could have been more interwoven, rather than everything just all of the sudden happening at the end. But overall, a good read.
