Several months ago, Zane Halloway was hired to kill magical genius Irving Farns. Now he has a new client, Irving's daughter.
Beth Farns hires Zane and Lily to locate her father's greatest creation, a new type of magical device, neither thorn nor tangle. She believes it's hidden beyond the Blue Wall. To complete the job, Zane and Lily will need to infiltrate restricted elvish territory, face off against a charismatic, young leader, and unravel the mystery of why the elves surrendered from a war they were winning and allowed themselves to subjugated by the people of Opel.
LIGHTNING and THRONES is the third Zane Halloway novella. It continues the tale of magic, mystery, and assassins that started in THORNS AND TANGLES.
Another fun-filled instalment in this ongoing novella series by PT Hylton. This one I picked up after having finished up the second one earlier today and so I really wanted to just continue straight on with the series and stay with the characters and adventures. This series follows Zane and Lily, a Ferox and his apprentice, as they get mixed up in all sorts of assassination plots and schemes (as is their job description).
This third novella felt a little bit like there was a lot of fantasy influence as Elves came into the story in a big way and I could certainly see similarities to other fantasies I have read, but still PT managed to put his own spin on things and keep me engaged throughout! I liked that we got to experience a bit more of the wide world and see another culture and whilst these are only short stories, the level of involvement and enjoyment I get from reading them is just wonderful.
I like the two main characters of Zane and Lily a lot. They work well together but equally they can act on their own initiative and figure things out for themselves which makes them more fun to read about. I think that seeing the lengths that these characters go to in this one in order to help out the other shows a development of a strong relationship and mutual trust, and I think we're constantly seeing the layers of the story build up novella by novella.
Overall another great, fast story with a lot of fun stuff happening. I don't tend to read many novellas or much short fiction generally but this is a series which I always make sure to check out and pick up because I just find them so engaging and chirpy. A great sword and sorcery style series and I will be looking forward to the next one being released later this month. 4*s and recommended :)
When I started these Zane Halloway novellas by P.T. Hylton I never expected him to connect the novellas together into one large story. I thought it was going to be more episodic and less serial but I am happy to say that I think the serial take is why I'm enjoying them so much. Even though each novella has its own story, they all relate to each other. As I read each novella the world building gets more interesting and complex. I liked what he did with the Elves in this novella and I think it's a fresh approach to a race that has been done often in fantasy.
This novella in the overall story has Zane and Lily going after a very powerful tangle within the Elven district behind the walls. The history of this world and the complexities of the magic system get expanded in this volume. I enjoyed reading it and I look forward to the last 3 in the series. I think that this volume suffers some by being a "middle volume" in the overall story with it being a mostly building up and world building centered volume, but it was still a great read.
If you enjoy secret assassin organizations, rogues for hire, or just a good ol' assassin teacher and student relationship, then give these novellas a try. They are quick reads and a lot of fun.
Lightning & Thrones is the third book in the Zane Halloway series by P.T. Hylton. Zane convinces Beth Farns, the daughter of an abditus that he killed, to hire him to find her father’s most powerful creation. To do so Zane and Lily must travel beyond the Blue Wall into the elvish ghetto. There, they clash with an elvish leader and find out that someone else is also searching for the same item they are.
“I have a bad feeling we’ve just got ourselves mixed up in local politics.”
In this series, Hylton has not included any of the typical fantasy races and creatures other than the elves. I like this, as I sometimes find that books get bogged down in characteristics and descriptions when everyone is a different race or species. Unlike human abditus, the elves can create magic with their bare hands, without the use of thorns, tangles, or other magical items. Long ago, prejudices between humans and elves led to conflict and war between the two races, resulting in the elves being holed up in their ghettos. In Lightning & Thrones, Zane and Lily find out why the elves surrendered and what they sacrificed when they had been winning the war against the humans.
While the story is still very much about Zane, Lily’s role continues to grow and she really takes the lead in the second half of the story. Since Thorns & Tangles she has grown from apprentice to almost Zane’s equal partner. Hylton writes her as a very strong and independent thinking female character. In book three we see her sacrifice, what she had spent years working towards, in order to protect Zane.
“That’s the secret. I don’t tell myself the lie that I’m a good man. The war between good and evil wages within me, as within all men. I deny the existence of neither.”
I rate Lightning & Thrones five stars. This series keeps getting better, and Hylton kicked it up a notch with book three. The stage is set for book four and I look forward to finding out what comes next.
