My 6 year old is fascinated with our solar system. She enjoyed reading this book. It explained the weather, gravity, and its Earth's center.

[Series Review] The Earth’s core, crust, mantle, and more are explored in this easy non-fiction reader from Scholastic. A photographic Word Hunt chart listing “words to watch for” allows pre-reading in each of the books in this Space Science series. Colorful photographs and large print text increase readability, and each title includes a map of the solar system, a glossary, index, additional resources, and a chart listing interesting facts about the planet, all features that make this series an excellent introduction to the solar system for young readers.

This review is for the whole series.

I purchased three sets of books on the planets for my students to use as they did a research project during our astronomy unit. I have to say that this set was my least favorite. The text is written in something like 36 pt font, so there are perhaps 100 words total in the 24-page book.

The only thing I found useful was the last page of each book that had a summary of facts about the planet.

A very nice introduction to earth science for grades 1-3. Not only does it address the earth's crust, mantle, and core--and explain these well in kid-friendly language--it also does a good job of explaining how "plates" work. As a Canadian teacher, I was pleased to see that distances are also given in kilometers!

Steve says...it was good because it was easy for girls to remember and they were able to grasp the concepts. Short sentences that compares geology to common things (e.g. plates of earth not being like dinner plates). Pictures good--descriptive with words.

This book is also a great book to use when studying space. The real life pictures capture the students minds and enhance the text features. This book could also be used to teach earth day.
