He looks for crimes that fall through the cracks, criminals who do horrible things to those who can't defend themselves and get away with it. His ex-wife was murdered years ago, but until a mysterious young woman magically appears at his apartment, he had no reason to find out who did it or why. Soon the two of them are traveling up and down the length of California in order to bring a killer - and maybe a couple of others who deserve it - to justice.
This short story features an early version of the character who became Logan, the urban vigilante antihero of "Logan's Young Guns."
Nathan Walpow's most recent work recounts the exploits of Logan, who tracks down those who prey on women and children and sees that they pay the price. The novellas Logan’s Young Guns and Logan Shoots First, currently available as e-books, will soon be joined by a third in a trade paper volume from Down & Out Books.
Nathan’s Joe Portugal mystery series consists of four novels, with a fifth and final one in the works. His short fiction includes “Push Comes to Shove,” selected for the Best American Mystery Stories series, and “A Good Day’s Work,” optioned for a movie.
Nathan is a member of Mystery Writers of America and International Thriller Writers, past president of the Southern California MWA chapter, and a five-time Jeopardy! champion. His website is at www.walpow.com.
Very short, and decant enough read. It was good considering how short it was, and how hard it must be to get in enough details. I couldn't really understand how the daughter ended up like the father (as far as extra curricular activities), when she didn't really know him? Maybe, I missed something.
Very well written. The story is about a vigilante who tries his best to do what is right. Sure he shot s kid on the head, but he thought he was saving the kid from a life of doom.
His life soon takes a turn when his daughter shows up and is looking to avenge her mothers death. Will he help her? You will have to read to find out.
Not sure what to write. A very short story of Vengeance. But I didn't enjoy reading it all. Just felt very rushed. Would have been better if it had been made into a full length novel and explained better
I liked this short read, which reminded me of an old black and white crime show from forties TV. I don;t thin the man who is the main characters name was ever said, but he is a bit of a vigilante, delivering justice when the police don't. When Jenny shows up on her doorstep to tell him his ex-wife died 5 years earlier, this man and Jenny are on a mission to find out what happened and who was behind it. Good short story that will definitely catch readers attention.
A brief and bloody tale about a vigilante killer. A laconic delivery, the action is up-front in your face and the characters and settings are pared down to a minimum. Just how I like it. I must keep an eye out for more from this writer. That's what these shorts are all about - to give you a taster, to encourage you to sample a main course.
Sometimes you know that your foe of the moment has no future. That he is too far down the wrong road so you put him down because you have to end his misery. That and you can rescue the three young girls held in the back of the van. It is just part of the job.
The woman in his living room also has a job in mind. A far more personal job for the man who used to be Special Forces and now is a vigilante killer working out of Los Angeles. A job that is complicated and also very much needs doing in the short story Daughters by Nathan Walpow.
Told in the first person, this is a hard edged fast moving short story featuring a nameless and very interesting main character. Borderline sociopath with a touch of humor our antihero is very much of the opinion that the world is a place that needs cleaning up after on a fairly frequent basis. One can’t reveal much about the short story without giving away too much, beyond what has been said above, but there are a couple of twists in this tale that help create a mighty good read.
Good quick read. What would you do when bad guys seem to rule? When the hero in this story becomes a vigilante and serves justice up continually. When he comes home one night, he finds a stranger who is not a stranger waiting for him. Intrigued by her tale, he decides to help solve a crime that has haunted him for years. Traveling up and down the California Coast in search of new clues helps bond the two.
If you like crime stories, you will enjoy this short story. Fast paced with lots going. I thoroughly enjoyed it, though the ending was no surprise.
A quick, little story to thrill and chill you! This first person story is about vengeance. The storyteller never gives himself a name but identifies himself as someone who delivers vengeance on wrongdoers. One day his estranged daughter appears at his door seeking vengeance of her own. The two of them join forces to right the wrong of her mother’s death. At just 14 pages this story moves quickly but will keep you guessing. Definitely worth the time!
I was a little bored by the story and a little lost at parts due to it. But it was a quick read that shows short stories can form a proper plot and tell a complete story.
Repetitive. The same sentences often found at least twice in the book. The name of the book makes no sense. So girls here and there so what. What is the point? They point of the book didn't make a strong enough sense of an argument to use this title. It could have been called Lucies, Maries or anything in between and it would not have matter to commit it to memory. Really dumb book from beginning to end.
Dumb book from one end to another. Can't think of anything good to say. I call it how I see it.
If you enjoy a poorly written story, unlikable characters, no character development, an almost non-existent plot, a rushed ending that wasn't great, and slight digs towards white people and Christians, then this book is for you. As for me, I wish I could get back the last 15-20 minutes I wasted on this story. At least it was free.
Walpow notes at the end that this story was an early incarnation of his Logan character and it does feel very much like a sketch/idea. It's very hard boiled with the main character adding a little backstory and showing a certain ruthlessness.
It's hard to fully judge the author on this alone and I might have to seek out a Logan novella in time.
I was very curious to see what could be done for a story of this magnitude with so little a page home. Of course the story went quickly. It came off as very matter of fact but I could see how the story could have been elaborated upon, answers were quick to be found. Most books and stories the main character has to work a little bit harder. Decent storyline. I liked it

There was not enough of the story to give too much of a briefing. This book seems to start in the in the middle and ends in the middle. If that makes any sense. Seems like it could be very good
A short story. Decent character development (as much as can be done in such a short story) but the plot didn't develop beyond the characters. There was no resolution. It left me wanting more.
