A.L. Mengel is an Award-Winning Author of Speculative Fiction. His novels and stories have each been called a "complex examination of relationships" with characters on a journey of transformation. He writes in the Supernatural, Paranormal and Science Fiction genres. Mengel novels are typically deep, philosophical, and thought provoking.

His works address issues of alcoholism, intolerance, grieving and death, fear of the afterlife, and the journey for understanding, among others. His protagonists, some of which are angels and demons, are frequently found on a search for purpose or transformation, which are recurring themes in his stories.

Mengel grew up reading Stephen King and Anne Rice, two of his favorite authors. He first found a love of writing upon taking a Creative Writing class in High School - but did not become a more serious writer until becoming an Arts and Entertainment Editor in Philadelphia, and later while taking another Creative Writing class where he was inspired to complete his first novel. More recently, he has connected and interacted with his readers via "The Writing Studio" where he shares his writing methods and inspiration. He enjoys time with his two dogs and two cats, and loves to write outdoors as much as possible.

I'm going to make an admission right now - I do not subscribe to NaNoWriMo. I think it is a bit outdated in its philosophy and execution. However, I still enjoy researching writing techniques and how they can help me. Enter in #Writestorm. Author A.L. Mengel does a fantastic job in not only explaining his methodology, but giving you the reader and perspective author the guidelines in how to use it in your own writing style/lifestyle. I've used this style for most of the summer and into fall and couldn't be happier with the results.

Opinion - I dislike NaNoWriMo very much. AL Mengel offers an alternative option to help authors get words on paper which can be used year round. I highly recommend this philosophy.

I don't believe in magic, but I do believe in personal experience, and A.L. Mengel presented his own experience using these basic tactics in a such a compelling way that I just had to try it--with great results.

I hoped this book would help increase my writing output and I can report 100% success! One note, I bought this book because of D.M. Cain’s rave review and she was justified in raving. I hesitated at first because I noticed several authors using the #WRITESTORM method in groups. That’s great for more social folks, but I’m a hopeless hermit when it comes to fiction writing.

But the lure of producing writing more quickly was not to be denied. I bought the book. Read it, grasped it. Tried it out (skeptical by nature). I had great results and I am now happily using it every day with increased word count as a result. The basic method works beautifully when done in solitude. Using it in a group is optional for those who find that part of the method helpful.

The only other thing I’ll say about this method is that I’ve had similar concepts expressed to me in a way that did not help me write more. In fact, if I’d just heard, “here’s the gist of this method” from some spoiler-minded person, I’d have said. “Oh, yeah, heard of that. Didn’t work for me.” I think the main difference with this book is that it's presented in a less rigidly structured way than similar methods. I'm the sort of person who can be depended upon to do the opposite of what people tell me to do, just because they told me to do it, and A. L. Mengel's suggested methods have just enough structure and no "shoulding." Highly recommended!

#Writestorm by A.L. Mengel is a must-read for anyone who writes or who dreams of being a writer. When I first began writing, I took everyone's advice. I didn't know and tried a lot of different approaches. There was one basic comment that stuck with me. Forgive me but "Ass in the Chair" made a lot of sense. I read Stephen King "On Writing" and a bunch of others. All with the same idea. And I'll keep reading these books. But here's the important thing. Mengel has simplified and clarified the process, and made the idea of sitting and writing as easy as a sip of coffee (which we all need). Brilliant in its simplicity, #Writestorm makes it simple—plan to write, do it, but don't overdo it. As writers we all know that life can get in the way in so many ways. A.L Mengel has the solution. Read this book.

This book is great for both those who already write and those that would like to start their career but can't find the time.

As I writer, I thought I knew all the ways to write and wasn't expecting to be surprised by the contents of this book. I was! It made complete sense and I have changed the way I write as a consequence.

It is only a short read and it can be finished within a couple of hours, but it's the power of the words that make you feel 'I can do this'.

It also contains a little humour and I was chuckling when Mengel described me to a tee!

So I highly recommended this book for any writer or would be writer.

I truly believe there's merit to the approach the author recommends.

I've finished one novel and am working on my second. For each novel, I used a different approach to writing. By chance, I stumbled partially onto the approach in this book on my second novel and I do indeed find it more effective. This book provided some additional thoughts and tips, as well. I've rated the book 4 stars because there was some repetition and parts that could have been culled out, but on the whole, I do think someone attempting to write a novel will find this book helpful.
