Change of content for this series of adaptations Instead of 3 short stories, now 1 x novella length and 1 short story. Also felt like change of author as for me this two stories were not as fast paced or as gripping as they should have been. Both episodes were very good on screen, they must have been better than average for me to remember large parts of the stories after a few pages of each. So this was a disappointing step down from previous titles. Short stories were fine as the pace didn’t let up. The first story featuring Colonel Lawton had more pages than previous episodes and yet somehow it didn’t take advantage of them, for me at least. The second story which gave the volume its title read like an after thought - it had better pacing than the first story, and should have been a tight page turner. I found it to be okay but again slightly disappointing.
Overall then an okay read but a step down from previous volumes.
Robert Holdstock’s first shot at writing under the Ken Blake pseudonym. Holdstock’s prose is a step down from Kenneth Bulmer’s, and his episode balance is lopsided, over-novelising the first story while letting the second crash and burn in a wretchedly perfunctory ending.
