Douglass McGrail is a Scottish water horse—his clan the deadliest in the British Isle. When the shifter chooses to save—rather than eat—a young lassie, he never expects her innocent face to mark his memory so strongly.
Months later, he stumbles onto a perceived attack in progress and plays the hero once more. He’s shocked to find the victim is the same lass who haunts his dreams.
Jinny Fairchild is an English miss who’s come to the Highlands to live with her last remaining family. She is pursued by her handsome older cousin, Lachlan Brockhouse, but he has a dark side that lands her in the path of the mighty Douglass McGrail.
Douglass wants Jinny for himself, yet discovers she is connected to the attacker she denies knowing. He’s determined to find the truth.
Jinny loves Lachlan, even with his dark side. And she loves Douglass, even with his dark secret. Her heart is torn, but one thing is certain—no matter which of these men she chooses, she will be choosing a monster.
I adore castles & all they hold—people, furnishings, fashion, drama. A time travel author lost in a paranormal romance world & I wouldn’t want it any other way.

I'm having a hard time rating this actually. I'll be honest to say that I liked it but only parts. Its not for the faint of heart. Its got things in it that will bother some, but I was warned before I read it. Since Amazon has no warnings or the publisher/author in the blurb I'll mention at the end in my notes. There are some SPOILERS!!!!!
Jinny is coming to live with her Uncle after settling things with the death of her beloved Father. Her Uncle welcomes her but his wife not so much. Her cousin Lachlan has his eyes on her. He's spoiled and used to getting what he wants including Jinny. He'll even use violent means to get it. Jinny is confused and vulnerable and welcomes his affections at first but when he turns mean she refuses him. Jinny is rescued by a beautiful horse at the beginning when she comes to live with her Uncle. Then again when she is found being attacked. When she meets Douglass she is wary but realizes who and what he is. She's is drawn to him and he to her. His kind lures and eats her kind and well he doesnt want to. He wants her in a different way. However, being with Jinny is forbidden by his people. Will he convince his people that Jinny is different or will he have to say goodbye to his love forever?
I enjoyed parts of the book. I liked Jinny but she really is naive and has no backbone for a heroine. Granted women didnt really complain about things in this time setting but when it comes to her safety you'd think she'd go to her Uncle who in fact loved her like his own child. Douglass I like him a lot. He was really good to her and sweet especially for such a violent creature. I wish there was more relationship building and romance with Jinny and Douglass. Lachlan really was a sick bastard just sayin. He got what he deserved.
Warning notes: I have to warn some readers because Amazon did not and I know some readers can be sensitive to certain situations. There are attempted rape scenes and coercion with a few scenes Jinny has with Lachlan. He forces her to do things and is violent with her and hits her a couple times.
This is a very creative story that quickly drew me in. I was kept glued to the pages wanting to know what was going to happen next. I was intrigued to see this was about a water horse, I was very curious to see how the author would tell the story. The story does deal with a dark topic, I hesitate to say more for fear of giving too much away. I would be interested in reading more books in this series.
I received a copy of this manuscript from the author, my review has been voluntarily submitted.
Very interesting concept. I've never read anything about water horse shifters so this was an unexpected treat. I really enjoyed how Douglass and Jinny met and started spending time together. I felt so bad for her uncle and want him to get a second chance at happiness. Her cousin Lachlan was a psycho who made Jinny feel like it was her fault that he had an unhealthy obsession for her. I would definitely read a sequel.
I absolutely loved this book, finally a different shifter to read about!! Douglas who turns into a water horse and also a gorgeous big, black stallion. That is the form in which he first meets Jinny, an English lass coming to Scotland after the death of her father to live with her Uncle, her mean spirited Aunt and her creepy, perverse cousin. The story is catchy, keeps you reading and wanting more, well done!!
Jinny has to move and live in the highlands after her father dies. There she meets Douglas and realizes the stories her uncle told her about the the men how change into horses are true, though they are not all as mean as she was led to believe. She calls in love with Douglas while trying to fight off her cousins advances.
I never really cared for historical stories but this was very good and entertaining.
I really enjoyed this book. It has some dark moments, and even darker truths running through it, but people can be dark and twisted sometimes. Plus who thought a water horse could be so hot! There is somewhat graphic violence, and detailed adult content. Not a story for someone who likes sparkly fairy tales, but very good.
The first thing that grabbed by attention about this book is the gorgeous cover. It really sets the tone for the first two chapters of the book. I also enjoyed most of the first two chapters. It uses a lot of Gothic tropes, and I love Gothic literature (my MA thesis was on Gothic literature). There is a dark, foreboding sense, a mysterious setting, a heroine with an obscure background, a hint of the supernatural. The Gothic setting is set up really well and I was having fun reading it. The Scottish setting is also described well and the Scottish brogues are well-written.
However, the dramatic scene that is revisited throughout the book because it sets the initial meeting between Jinny and Douglas makes no sense. I cannot imagine it at all even though I read it several times. Somehow the carriage tips over and is dangling over a cliff, but the horse manages to lift the carriage up with his back, even though that would make him under the carriage and thus also over the cliff yet he is also looking into the carriage at the same time because their eyes meet.
In spite of this, though, I kept reading, determined not to let my confusion ruin the fun of the novel. But it only got worse. In the book’s description, it says Douglas “stumbles onto a perceived attack in progress and plays the hero once more” (emphasis mine). This is not a “perceived attack,” it is an attempted rape. Later in the book, the victim, Jinny, says herself that it was an attempted rape. For the author to describe this as “perceived attack” and not as an attempted rape is indicative of the author’s attitude toward rape throughout the book. The writer also uses sexual assault as titillation, and I simply cannot condone that. In one scene where Lachlan is forcing himself on Jinny, Jinny describes the pleasure she feels and the scene is written in a sexual way.
There are lots of other problems with this book, including the fact that Douglas wants to slaughter a whole clan of other Waterhorses and steal their women instead of trying to make some marriage alliances first, the lack of any discussion between Jinny and her uncle when Douglas starts courting Jinny even though her uncle warned her about his clan, the way Douglas’s entire clan just rolls over and says Douglas can marry Jinny in like 2 seconds (if they can marry humans and they are all cool with it why haven’t they been doing it all along?), the title has no connection to the book, and so forth.
As I said, I wished I liked this book more and it started off really well, but it fell apart quickly and I will not recommend a book that uses sexual assault as scintillation.
An interesting read that was unique and entertaining. You don’t come across many books that feature water horses, and having the story set in the historical Scottish Highlands gave this novella the perfect setting. The story had a bit of a dark undertone to it, but it fit the characters and helped tell the story.
There wasn’t a whole lot of character development, mostly because this was a novella, but the author did a nice job filling in the blanks and giving history where needed to understand the emotional and psychological makeup of the characters. Enough information was always provided at the right time to get a better understanding of why a character behaved a certain way or why circumstances played out the way they did. My only complaint is that I would have loved to have known more about the Clan McGrail and the water horse history…but again, for a novella there was enough information to tell the story, I was just left wanting to know more!
Jinny was a bit naïve. Her initial welcoming of Lachlan’s advances were a bit surprising, but after spending her life growing up on her dad’s ship I thought she might have been a bit more of a fighter. Granted, she is young, but being around sailors all day for so many years I would have loved to see her do a little better job of standing up for herself. I did love the fact that she never asked Douglas to deny his heritage – that scored big points in my book!
Douglas was wonderful. Although he has a dark nature that’s part of his being a water horse, he is totally smitten with Jinny. I loved the fact that he was always true to his nature, but where Jinny was concerned his need to protect overrode those instincts. Lachlan on the other hand was pure evil in my book, and deserved so much more than he got!
All in all, I really enjoyed this one. It was a bit dark and edgy, but I was swept into the time period and loved the water horse lore!
I received this book from the author for an honest review.
Jinny Fairchild has lost her father who was really her last family member. But she does have her Uncle who is kin to him through her mother being adopted. Once she reach there she find she really liker her Uncle but his wife and son are another matter. His son is constantly trying to hurt her and rape her. On one of these tries Douglass McGrail sees them and stops her cousin from hurting her. Douglas finds that the lady he help is the same one he saw a few weeks ago. Douglas is a shape shiftier and ech-00shkya so when he first saw Jinny he was in his horse form. Think she would not know him because of this he feels okay to talk to her. Once they start talking Jinny does realize what he is...this does not stop their growing love. This is a different kind of love story but one that I really enjoyed!
I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. This was a very different book for me. I read paranormal romances all the time, but I have only read about waterhorses once. It's a little disconcerting to worry about whether or not our heroine's lover is going to literally devour her. There was little character development, and I felt that the resolutions to the major conflicts were underdeveloped and convenient. As a piece of writing it was well done with neatly turned phrases and few errors. As literature, it was definitely lacking. That being said, it was an enjoyable read for what it was.
Outlander meets water horses in this magical tale. Albergucci weaves a tale of an English girl moving to the Scottish Highlands after the death of her father where she lives with her uncle and cousin. It is here that she meets Douglass, a man who beats up her (awful) cousin, except that he has saved her before - as a water horse.
Albergucci switches between Jinny and Douglass's POV's smoothly. Each one has their own distinct voice, which is refreshing. The romance feels right, and it moves quickly.
This feels right at home next to Outlander on my shelves. Five stars.
To each his own is a creative, unique and very entertaining story. This is the first Water horse shifter I have read so I wasn't quite sure what to expet but, I was pleasently surprised when I realized how quickly I got lost within the pages. I was glued to my seat from the very beginning and just couldn't put it down until I knew how it ended. I wouls absolutely recommend this book!!
Douglass is a water horse. Jinny is coming to the highlands to live with her last remaining family. Douglass in water horse form save Jinny carriage from going over a cliff. Months later in man form he save Jinny for attack. Douglaas want jinny to love him but can she over look his dark side?
Wow!! What a great Novella about a sexy, alpha shifter. A Water Horse!! I have read a lot of shifter books, but how unique, a water horse with a dark side. Anna Albergucci shares the love between Douglas McCall and Jinny Fairchild. I was able to follow the characters from the beginning and the plot was amazing! Ms. Albergucci is a new author to me. I will definitely continue to read more of her books. I would highly recommend this book
