With her dying words Ivy Speex plunges her children into battle. Using the key she has left him, Odell discovers a race of highly evolved beings: proditoris aevus—Time Traitors. He learns that their millennia-long mission to protect humanity from the hostile forces of time has failed. The timeline is fragmenting, and only the siblings Speex can stop it. Odell travels back to the American colonies on the cusp of revolution to alter an important historical event. Meanwhile his twin sister, Ettie, struggles in the present against a constantly shifting reality. And it is left to Odette to seize her destiny and fulfill the prophecy their mother died to protect. Imaginative and rich in historical detail, Twin Speex: Time Traitors Book II delivers another exciting chapter in the Time Traitors saga.
I liked the first book better, but this one is good. Both books have excellent dialogue, and I really enjoyed the friendships and family relationships. The author doesn't invent situations just for the sake of conflict. So when things do happen, they are very believable (for a time travel book). Book two switches back and forth from the past to an alternate timeline. It's fun, if a little confusing at times. I thought the social and political undertones enriched the book and were well-integrated into the story. The focus on slavery and racism was interesting and surprisingly timely. Overall, a good addition to the series.
Twin Speex is the second of the Time Traitor books It is a little harder to read then the first but is a good story. Two Speex is once again sent back in time to the American colonies to alter an important historical event which has somehow been changed to alter the present. He must find out why time has changed. While his twin sister Ettie has been left in the present and must deal with her reality constantly changing. The two struggle to find a way to stabilize their worlds. It is left to Odette the original version of Ettie to except her destiny and fulfill the prophecy their mother died to protect.
I loved the first book, but I actually liked this one even better. The historical portion in pre-Revolutionary Philadelphia was really well done. The drama surrounding the makeup of the new nation really drew me in. But unlike the first book, this one has a parallel story line in the alternate steampunky New York City- which is a lot of fun. Also more scifi with the Time Traitors and all. The dialogue was great and the different plot lines were all drawn together at the end, with a bit of a twist I did not see coming.
This second book in the series goes full PC, into pure heavy handed propaganda, until I couldn't take it seriously anymore. It's almost like some of the 19 century books that make the author's blood boil because of all the stringent, cosseted attitudes, only updated for the bluenoses of the 21 century.
There's some time travel shenanigans and romance and such, but the rest is such a distraction, one hardly notices the plot, characters, or setting.
With a little subtlety, this could be a good book.
I really enjoyed this book. A very promising new writer. This book was very entertaining and much more indepth than her first book. If you like time travel, this is the book for you. It is not just time travel but also parallel timelines. Really a good read!
