An Ignatian Introduction to Prayer: Scriptural Reflections According to the Spiritual Exercises

Rate this book
This is a book for those who desire to pray with Sacred Scripture. Following the spiritual itinerary of the Spiritual Exercises by Ignatius of Loyola, forty reflections offer a great resource for those beginning to pray with Scripture. They provide accompaniment in the first, tentative steps of such blessed prayer. For those who already practice prayer with Scripture, and who seek new depth in that prayer, these emotionally rich reflections can provide an opportunity for such growth. They are also useful for spiritual directors, retreat directors, small groups in parishes, and in the home.

This book opened the scriptures up to me in a new way. I've never felt more connected to Christ while reading His Word.

There is so much to gain from this small book and I will definitely return to it. I'm so excited to discover that God's Word is for me today and that He had my heart in mind when He spoke to His loved ones all those years ago.

Not really "finished reading" since the book is more like a guide for contemplations. And a very good guide indeed :).

This was an excellent resource for beginning to pray with Scripture in the Ignatian style. The imagination scenes that Gallagher paints in my mind were much clearer than I would be able to accomplish on my own. While ultimately understanding that Ignatian prayer was not for me, this book helped to open up different stories in ways that I hadn't considered.

Pray this book! Excellent meditations that helped me to pray with Scripture instead of just reading it.

This book is a series of "Scriptural Reflections" as the title states, to be used for personal meditation and reflection. I typically read one reflection per day (more when i was on retreat). The scripture passages were those typically given on ignatian retreats. Many of Gallagher's reflections were very helpful and insightful, the fruit of his own prayer, no doubt. Yet, some of the reflections were merely the scripture passages broken down by verse (hence the three star review).

If one is new to Ignatian Method of reflecting on Scripture, this book should be pretty helpful.

An excellent book to pray with the scriptures and to get to know the scriptures. A chapter a day or even better a chapter a week of meditating on the scriptures passage would provide much consolation.

This book changed my spiritual life. I previously didn’t “get” Ignatian reflections. This book made it all work for me, opening the scriptures in a brand new way. Highly recommend and wish there was a second one!
