Allison and Sabrina enter the Miss Acorn Falls beauty contest in the hope that winning will help them achieve their goals, but they both get more than they bargained for
Beauty Queens PLOT: Allison Cloud and Sabrina Wells enter a beauty pageant to become the next Miss Junior Acorn Falls. Allison sees the pageant as a stepping stone to promote the environmental club she started (S.A.F.E). Which stands for Student Action For the Environment). And to get other schools involved in starting similar clubs locally and nationwide.
My Thoughts: When you think about the behind-the-scenes, reality, pageant shows you see on TV there's always some kind of drama. In this book there was none. That to me was a little unrealistic. Pageants, as I know of them, are highly competitive events. In this book, all the contestants seemed to get along with one another. Even the *pro*. It was a *good* change, but I don't think it was real change. There weren't any aggressive, dominating, superior, bitchy girls in this that looked down their noses because they *knew* they had the title. In other words, there was no conflict. At the end, there were no tears, no hysterics, no jealousy, no angry fits in the dressing room. They were all WAY to mature for junior high girls.
Even though this book was supposed to be about a beauty pageant that was minor. The major topic seemed to be heavily saturated with promoting recycling. It's mentioned in every chapter. Which what really is there to say about recycling and saving the environment? Other than it's a good message and Allison had a good idea to use the contest to promote S.A.F.E.
RATE: 6 Stars. I give it a six for addressing environmental concerns. As for the story, there wasn't much to it other than that. I guess if you wanted to stretch it a little deeper you could say that beauty is about more than just having the physical appearance and other things are involved that make you a beautiful person. Like making a difference in what's going on in the world around you.
Looking for an 90's book? Then read Beauty Queens (Girl Talk, #26) by L.E. Blair. This book wasn't all so great, but I do love the concern throughout the book about the environment. The main characters in the book are Allison and Sabrina, the beauty queens. In the story, Allison and Sabrina enter the Beauty Pageant. Allison joins because the winner would be able to go on a tour, giving speeches to other junior high schools, and she thought that was a perfect way to spread the news about the S.A.F.E. program. Sabrina joined because she thought it was a perfect start for her dream career, acting. The book wasn't very descriptive, and it used a plethora of quotation, so I don't really know what else to say besides the fact that the were one of the finalists, neither of them won. I can't really feel much of a connection with the characters, I wish that their personality's were described better in this book.
A light read primarily for teenagers. No cliffhangers and quite predictable. The series focuses on friendship of four girls and their school life. This particular story is about a Beauty Pageant that two of the four friends enter, and each had their own motivation behind doing so. It is not a shallow story as there are some basic lessons to learn from it, but nothing too serious. Personally, I don't mind reading books of this type.
