Desperate times call for desperate measures...

And desperate is the only way to describe Kayla Davis's current situation. Out of work and almost out of money to cover her bills, Kayla finally caves to her roommate's nagging and follows her to Arrangements, an online dating site that matches pretty young women with older men of a certain tax bracket.

Convinced this "make-rent-quick" scheme will surely fail - or saddle her with an 80 year old boyfriend - Kayla is shocked when Michael Bradbury, Internet billionaire and stone-cold salt and pepper fox, offers her a solution to all her financial troubles.
It's hard enough for Kayla to accept his generosity, but what's a girl to do when the wealthiest man she's ever met is a dream in and outside of the bedroom?

Every time I pick up a book by Rebekah Weatherspoon, I’m just reminded how fuckin’ good her stories are.

I just adored this. Short and utterly sweet.

Black girl getting spoiled in every way, a fuckin’ age gap and a half, starts off as a sugar baby arrangement but turns into something really genuine.

And Rebekah Weatherspoon always delivers on the sex.

This is a first in a series and I’ll definitely be reading the other two, since it follows the same couple. I couldn’t get enough of them.

I had a terrible day. You know that kind of day that just beats down your soul and makes everything look bleak and a little hopeless.

I was desperate for a distraction and remembered I had heard to the author, Rebekah Weatherspoon, being interviewed on a podcast where she said this book was fluffy. I needed that last night. I needed to forget about my stress and pain and just lose myself in a hopeful love story. Holy hell did So Sweet deliver and then some.

Kayla is a delight. A big beautiful black girl who love her body, is sex positive, and pro-sex work. She's also hilarious. I was laughing out loud (or rather muffling it in my pillow in order to not wake up my husband) at the dialogue. Fans of witty banter and foul mouthed women, this is our kind of book. Micheal is sexy older man who respects women, is driven, and upfront. (He's in the top 5 of my Steve Rogers Alpha Males romantic leading men list.) His honestly both in the arrangement and his feelings had me swooning on the floor. God damn this man is so damn hot.

This couple are hot! They're chemistry jumps off the page. I was flailing and giggling right along with Kayla as she and Micheal exchanged flirty text. Concerned for her through every step of their complex and unique relationship. I shed tears of joy over the beautiful happily ever after these two beautiful sexy people so richly deserved.

This is fantasy fulfillment of the highest quality. I wanted to wrap myself in this story and never say goodbye to these characters. This is a guaranteed reread and one of my favorite romances of all time.

This book was something else! Let's see...hot, sexy, an interesting spin on the usual hot billionaire trope, and did I mention hot?

When I say hot, I mean HOT. Also very sex positive, which was great.

This author is new to me but I definitely will be keeping an eye on her from now on.

First read: March 2016 (3 stars)
Reread: November 2016

Upping this a star higher because although this book isn't perfect (Kayla and Michael fell in love with each other too quickly for my taste; it did feel a bit rushed--something I didn't notice in my first read but did now, weirdly), I love Kayla and Michael so much and sometimes that's enough for me to rate a book a 4. I enjoyed Kayla's wittiness and her banter with Michael (where can I haz a Michael), and I enjoyed the writing--the way Ms. Weatherspoon wrote this is very light and entertaining.

Also, I'm rereading this because the final book of this trilogy is just released, and I still haven't read book 2, so yeah I'm bingeing the whole thing.

Love, love, love!

Rebekah Weatherspoon really does have one of the funniest voices in romance. Never fails, and I adored the heroine of this book. It's first person narrative and Kayla is hilarious, in a thoroughly real "your friend who makes you laugh" way, I loved spending time with her. Also, a plus size heroine who is happy in her body and fully appreciated for it. Yay!

The romance didn't entirely work for me, which I think is primarily because I just don't get billionaires--which is why I'm so late reading this, it just isn't my trope. Can't stand billionaires, shifters or rock stars. I'm probably going to get drummed out of the romance community. :/

Given that, I thought the sugar-daddy setup was well handled--it was squicky, but Kayla/the author know very well it's squicky and it's handled thoughtfully and consciously, negotiating a situation that's never going to be equal on a practical level.

(And there's a sequel which I'm clearly going to have to get because MORE KAYLA.)

This is one of those books that keeps popping up/getting recced/what-have-you. I was in the mood for a quick and fluffy read and decided to give it a try. At 100 pages, the story is meaty enough to write a quick review.

What I like

+ Kayla

She’s a smart and young African-American woman who is also sweet and occasionally goofy. I liked her on own as well as with Michael. She didn't play games and was the kind of person I'd love to have as a friend.

+ Humor

For some reason, I wasn’t expecting this to be such a funny story. The clever turn of phrases and Kayla’s inner monologues had me giggling.

+ QUILTBAG representation

Not only is Kayla not straight, but there are several secondary characters who are queer as well.

What I felt neutral about

+/- The plot itself

It’s Kayla and Michael entering a sugar baby/sugar daddy relationship with both eyes open. Like, just because Michael was rich af, it didn’t mean he had all the answers. As for Kayla, she didn’t compromise her sense of dignity regardless of being three weeks away from getting evicted. She negotiated her terms in a way that didn’t come across as cold. They are a v. cute couple.

But there’s an obvious strong quality of fantasy as Michael sweeps Kayla into a world she had only been able to imagine. I get the escapism, but the story doesn’t move past that.

What I didn’t like

- Sudden personality change for a side character

In the last two chapters, one of the characters behave radically different than at the beginning. It was confusing because there really was no need for that?

- Michael as the ideal partner (too much?)

Outside of him being a workaholic, he’s v. chill about everything. I’d have liked to have seen him shaken up a little or having at least 1 flaw. Here's hoping he shows the less shiny side to himself in subsequent books. Since this the reader meeting him (alongside Kayla), it can almost be forgiven that he's perfect. The twist is that perfection can also be boring. #Hmmm

- Needed more detail

As fun as reading this story was, I couldn’t help but notice a severe lack of detail (both minor and major.)

On the minor side, we have a scene in which Kayla needs new clothes and Michael arranges it so that she gets her wardrobe of her dreams. However, nothing is described so we don't know how similar or different it is from what Kayla normally wears. Kayla is a character who is stylish and so this is a sort of a miss, imo.

On the major side are the sex scenes. Although pretty hot, they also feel somewhat impersonal. I mean, part of what takes a good sex scene and makes it great is the ability of making the readers feel everything. What the MCs are smelling, hearing, feeling, tasting, etc. is just as important as whether or not they are doing PIV or something else.

The missing descriptiveness was a big negative for me.

- Minor typos

They weren’t many or terrible, but I did kinda go "hmm" about them.

- Too short

This novella has 8 chapters but it needed at least 2 more.

The pace goes OTT in the last chapter. Up until the last chapter everything had been pretty steady. But the way the last chapter goes, it felt like there was about 55% of it missing.

TL;DR: A super-fast quick novella about a May/December romance that unfortunately has a rushed ending. I do recommend it since I did like 90% of it AND that there are 2 more books in the series.

I was simply delighted by this book. I wouldn't have tried it if not for the good book buzz around it and I am happy to buzz some more.

It is a lovely little novella that takes on so much that matters: friendship, age differneces, sexual agency, class, inter racial dating, varied bodied but does so with joy in each each person.

The heroine is great and the hero is steadfast and honest. Everyone in this book in grown (well maybe not the heroine's best friend) and reacts in realistic and practical ways.

Weatherspoon does such a good job with the attraction, falling in love and dilemma's of this romance.

I do wish we had a bit more. I like to linger into happily ever after. I hear we shall be seeing more of them in the future. I need Daniella to have her own book. Need.

So sweet & super sexy.

This is a great super sexy, sweet, and funny novella. She's not your typical sugar baby & he's not the typical sugar daddy. I love how real the dialogue is & how hot the sex is. I can't wait for the next installment.

This was a great hot and easy age gap novella. The relationship starts out as a sugar daddy/baby relationship but it is pretty apparent from the beginning that both mc's had an automatic attraction and feelings for one another. They get increasingly serious, and I really loved the fantastic communication they had and the chemistry between them was fantastic. For a steamy novella though, there was sometimes where it would fade to black (not always!!! just a couple of times). The heroine was plus sized and bisexual! This was a great easy read and just what I needed.

Unlike most billionaire romances, this one actually tried to turn the trope upside down by giving the heroine some autonomy, a healthy sex-positive attitude, and a hero who's actually decent despite his wealth. Had this not been a billionaire romance, I think I'd have enjoyed this way more. Kayla (the heroine) had a good head on her shoulders and was refreshingly honest, which I could see why Michael was strongly attracted to her.

Unfortunately, I'm just not the target reader for this type of story. The power imbalance just isn't sexy to me. The fact that Kayla (the heroine) found herself desperate enough to look for a sugar daddy through a dating site that caters to wealthy men looking for arm candy squicked me out.

The other trope that needs to die: the plus-sized hottie who compares herself to her skinnier roommate/best friend/etc.

Let's be real, had Kayla still had her job and financially solvent, neither she nor internet billionaire hottie Michael would have ever met. Maybe I could suspend my reservations if said billionaire met financially comfortable heroine at a Whole Foods or a bookstore. Then there's the typical (and tired) trope of younger woman/older man. Most romance readers are perfectly okay with this kind of pairing, yet lose their cookies over the reverse - older woman/younger man. Me, I'd love to read more books like those.

With that said, this was my first Rebecca Weatherspoon novel and I really like her narrative voice. Little details like mentioning Kayla's sewn-in weave were cool (though I kept wondering if she'd let Michael play with her hair). I read this because I'm trying to whittle down my physical books stack before going back to my Kindle and Nook. And it was short. If she gives all of her heroines this kind of autonomy and sex positivity, she'll be an instant auto-buy.

Didn't Get The Connection Between the Characters

FINAL DECISION: Sorry, this one didn't work for me. The premise seemed creepy -- but I have enjoyed other strange premises before. This one never worked for me. The characters seemed flat and I didn't get the connection between them.

THE STORY: Kayla Davis is out of work and near desperate as she agrees to her friend's plan to go to Arrangements and find a Sugar Daddy. Arrangements matches pretty young women with men of a particular income bracket. She expects to be disappointed with the selection of men and she is until she meets MIchael Bradbury, owner of Arrangements, internet billionaire. He ends up offering her an arrangement to take care of her financial worries if she will be his girlfriend for hire.

OPINION: This novella had promise, but I didn't end up being interested in either the premise or the execution of the story. The premise was strange and made the heroine difficult to like, but I have read other stories that had difficult premises but the authors were able to give the stories depth and the characters motivations enough sympathy to overcome the difficult premise. Here, I never gained any sympathy for Kayla. She was willing to take Michael as her sugar daddy and I never felt any sympathy for her. Even worse, I never felt any genuine chemistry between the characters. Their relationship felt cold to me despite the attempts to make it feel like a sweet romance. This one was just a miss for me.

WORTH MENTIONING: This novella is super hot with explicit sexual encounters.

CONNECTED BOOKS: This is the first Sugar Baby novella.

STAR RATING: I give this one 1.5 stars.

Light, fluffy and slightly scandalous romance that's exactly what the title is selling: sweet.

I'm usually averse to this extreme level of fluffiness, but I have to say Rebekah Weatherspoon manages to obliterate my extremely prejudicial preconceptions against anything corny by delivering an extremely well written insta-romance that's filled with several other terrifically good details that never seem forced or contrite: mixed-race couple, huge age difference that's never a caricature but also never a source for silly misunderstandings, an unconventional beginning, racy-hot sex scenes and most importantly a black, sturdy and fully curved confident woman lead. I loved it.

While filled with tooth-aching fluff it's also a new take on the Sugar Daddy trope that I ate up like it was chocolate. Plus it's funny, the sex scenes are hot and slightly kinky without ever being ridiculous (no growling!!!) and it's perfectly paced for the novella format.

I am fan. I can't wait to start the continuation.

Only complaint? A friend that turns out to be a back-stabbing bitch. Not necessary to the story and not a trope that bears any more screen-time than it's already got. I hate girl-on-girl hate. Also, as a side-note: there are a couple of typos that even I noticed and I'm not a native speaker, so that needs to get remedied.

Didn't really work for me. I know it's a novella, so there wasn't that much room to add depth, but I honestly never got a feeling of connection between the characters. There was no real conflict, either, which meant... it was just a collection of meh sex-scenes strung together with a thin narrative.

The premise could have been really interesting, but there just wasn't enough in this book to make it work for me.

There's something about So Sweet by Rebekah Weatherspoon that's like going to a buffet and eating only what you like. In my case, that's salad, more salad, meat, more salad, more meat, and then unfathomable amounts of cantaloupe chunks. Okay, fine, I'll eat this roll because carbs are party of a healthy balanced WHATEVER GIVE ME ANOTHER CHICKEN THIGH.

Let me translate that: it's short, and most of it is the main character having a good time having all her financial problems solved and then get sexed to her heart's content by a handsome silver fox who's unrealistically nice and sweet and amazing. All of which is super soothing to read -- I mean, this is some well written sex, y'all. I don't always actually read the sex details when I'm reading sexually explicit romance; sometimes I kind of... skim and zone. Rebekah's isn't like that. Rebekah's you savor. "That was how I died. Kayla Davis, age twenty-four. Cause of death: sexed into oblivion by one Michael Bradbury, Internet billionaire and master of cunnilingus."

I love the quirky, casual, personality-filled voice of her heroine, Kayla. "I think I should head home. Check on my roommate. Show my face so she knows you didn't murderer me." I love that she says "didn't murderer me" instead of "didn't murder me." I have friends who talk like that. I probably have my own Shira-isms. The author herself is pretty damn quirky and adorable; in a scene where Michael has the predictable "pool party where people much cooler than you" are invited, the two hot movie actors who show up are both named Chris, a direct dig at real life's flock of hot actors named Chris. (And she has the skill to play that one straight and let the audience enjoy themselves without having it waved in our faces, too. Calling attention to it would have decreased the joke's freshness.)

A well-balanced story does need conflict and unpleasantness of some kind. I want to spend some time talking about the one dark cloud in the book, which is the part where I eat the roll -- it was a damn good roll. This was a quality roll, y'all. It belonged in this meal. It enhanced it. It seems that a certain character in the protagonist's life sexually assaults the love interest (in a groping way), and the way it was handled is as far as I know unprecedented at least as far as my reading history. A man's sexual assault claim is respected and nobody serves him that "ha ha you lucky devil" bullshit; neither is it used as a bludgeon over feminism (you know how MRA's are always bringing up male survivors but not in a way that actually helps them?) He's believed and respected and everything about the way Weatherspoon handled this is very needed in our modern culture.

I really liked the way Kayla sees herself -- chubby and fabulous. She's also bisexual, which is brought up in the context of "me and my other qpoc friends from work" -- who seemed pretty cool, too, and I like the fact that the trans girl in the group winds up getting romanced by... a rock star? One of the Chris's? I actually forgot, but anyway one of the famous dudes at the pool party.

Anyway, yeah, it's candy, but it literally has candy on the cover! So Appropriate. ;-)

I was intrigued by So Sweet because it looks at love, lust and money in a way that's different from other billionaire books. Kayla isn't an wide-eyed ingenue; she's a cute, chubby single woman who's on the broke side, and reluctantly agrees to try sugar baby/sugar daddy site Arrangements. She's still skeptical when she goes to her first party, but quickly becomes intrigued by a hot billionaire, Michael, who doesn't quite fit the stereotype she has of sugar daddies. He's sexy, although pushing 50, and he's refreshingly candid about his money and his motives. Watching their romance unfold, as well as drama with her roommate and family as they adjust to this new twist in Kayla's life, is fun. Kayla is a realistic character, and Weatherspoon has her be a voice of reason, rather than simply getting swept away by the mere prospect of a cute guy with money. She knows the value of money, but falls for Michael for who he is inside, not what he can provide for her. This is a sexy twist on the modern billionaire romance, and I look forward to the next installment in February.

This is my third Rebekah Weatherspoon book and unfortunately, I've consistently found them kind of meh. There wasn't anything overly bad about this one, it just wasn't the book for me. Also, I kinda wish Adler, the female MCs friend, wasn't just a jealous person trying to get in between the couple. I'm over reading romance (or any book) with shitty female friendships.

Okay, so, I've read about two novellas by this author (and I have two more on my kindle that I'm itching to get to), and I really like her a lot. She's a great writer. She tends to tackle serious topics, or at least topics that you wouldn't necessarily think could be tackled in the way that she does. By that I mean, she does discuss characters who may have mental illness or mental health issues but the story still contains a few moments worth laughing at and there isn't this underlying thought of "is the romantic interest 'fixing' the main character" type of thing. Like, you'll get tasteful jokes alongside of these characters having this tender, sweet moment.

So Sweet is no different than that. It really is...actually sweet. Kayla and Michael meet through a dating service (of which Michael is the owner). However, the particular dating service that they meet on is for people who are trying to develop a sugar baby/daddy relationship. Kayla was convinced to sign up for this site by her Adler due to the fact that they were down on their luck with cash and needed money quickly. But Adler makes it clear that sex doesn't have to be involved if she doesn't want it. Kayla is still a little skeptical of the whole thing but goes anyway, and decides to attend a mixer held by the service...and here is where she meets Michael. And so it begins.

I'm not even going to comment on hot it was. That's a given. (It was smokin'!!!!). But my favorite thing I would say was Michael and Kayla. While they did move kind of fast, it at the same time didn't feel like it. They were really just cute together and how they interacted with each other. This really was a romantic comedy for me. (Of course, with much, much more sex).

This is going to sound sad but I like how Michael respected Kayla and her wishes. While he showed that he wasn't opposed to helping her out, he also tried not overstep her boundaries and listen to what she comfortable with (and what she wasn't). Given the fact that he was so much older than her (and even though I know CLEARLY this author wouldn't write a character like that), I kept myself braced for him saying something(or doing something) that would be gross (sexist/racist/etc., etc.). I AM THRILLED that wasn't there. Again, even though there is a large age gap between the two of them, I didn't really feel like they were taking advantage of each other. While Kayla was compensated, it came across really clear that they just like to hang out and kick it with each other. That was great.

I LOVED that they trusted each other so deeply. I felt that was so important. While there was still some thing they kind of had to establish with their relationship, there wasn't a constant, repetitive reminder of doubts and being warm then cold to this person over and over ad nauseum until they decide they love each at the end of the book

It was a quick read. It's actually a novella. But it is worth the read, especially if you're like me, and you like reading short stuff anyway or in the first place. I highly, highly recommend this to you. Trust me. It's really, really sweet and cute. I laughed and I can't wait to read from her.

description

Kayla Davis' unemployment situation is verging on critical. Unfortunately her roommate is the same boat. The same roommate has past experience in the sugar bowl, and suggests it answer to their current problems. Kayla doubts she's built for that life, but tags along to a mixer event anyway. She never expects to snag the attention of billionaire Michael Bradbury, the sweetest sugar daddy of them all.

The Good:
1. Kayla is the plus sized heroine I've been waiting on. She is lovely, great sense of humor, and confident in her sex appeal. I never got that sad sack feel that normally has me avoiding anything tagged BBW.

2. Michael will make beta hero fans happy. He is very chill, and sweet in a believable way. Plus being a sexy bearded silver zaddy doesn't hurt.

3. Despite being only a hundred pages, the romance didn't feel plot-point-rushed.

4. You know the black hair real-ness is strong in a book when the heroine asks for satin scarf for sleeping.

5. I appreciated the way sugaring itself was handled. Both parties were practical, respectful, and open.

The Bad:
1. I'm alpha addicted, so sometimes Michael ‘s Zen was too mellow for me.

2. All of the heroine’s friends irked me in some way.

3. The ending is open ended without being a cliffhanger. You will have to read more books to get the couple's complete story.

Final Thoughts:
This is a fast, cute, sweet hit of interracial erotica. It hit all the sweet spots, while adding a bit of unexpected realism. I definitely would recommend to fans of the sugar-ship trope.

A light and super fluffy fast read. I really like the sugar-baby premise, especially when a hot billionaire is involved offering to pay all the bills ( I mean really, stop making me swoon here! ) I liked that Michael was not a cocky dickhead in any way as many billionaires are, he was upfront and honest throughout, they never played games between them.

Kayla was cute and funny, I liked her inner voice. I liked she wasn't stick thing and she was body confident.

description"You’ll hear from me tomorrow. And maybe you’ll be with me on Monday. And Tuesday. Maybe forever." ---- Swooooon. Silver tongued devil.

For a short read it was paced as you'd imagine, so certain things weren't touched upon as I would have liked, the big age gape of 25 yrs for instance.

It's a pretty much one toned story, there's no major drama ( a couple of pages with a spiteful bestie but that's it ) for what it was I liked it, there was just something so NICE about Kayla and Micheal's relationship ( and the hot smut, so much hot smut ) that had me wanting to see more of them. The filler work story in between was a bit meh, I was in it for the couple.

description I was just holding on for dear life, praying we didn’t break the bed or my pelvis.

( spoiler alert, I ended up buying all three and reading them yesterday. each is 3 star cute fluffy reads )

Adorable. I wasn't sure about this one when I read the premise. The sugar daddy/sugar baby story gave me pause. But I always love an age gap romance and I love Weatherspoon's writing so I figured I'd give it a shot. Kayla is young, black and in difficult financial circumstances. Her roommate suggests they go to a sugar daddy party being organized through a service she had once used. Kayla isn't so sure, but goes along with it and meets Michael. Michael is an almost 50-year-old, hot Internet billionaire.

This story ended up being so much sweeter than I anticipated. A lot of LA set romances with these sorts of set-ups can get kinda gritty, but this one was charming all the way through. Michael and Kayla are attracted to each other sure, and the relationship starts off with the heroine promise of an exchange of funds, but what keeps them together is Kayla's honesty and wisdom and Michael's caring consideration.

My only gripe was that the ending seemed a little abrupt. There's a quick scene addressing family stuff and then, bam, it's over. I'd have maybe liked one more scene (even a sex scene--and lemme tell you--this book doesn't skimp there) just to tie everything up in a pretty bow.

All in all though, a thoroughly sweet novella with tons of charm and personality.

This was both my first time reading a book by this author, and my first time reading a sugar baby/sugar daddy romance. Despite the age difference between the characters, I really liked them both. Kayla definitely comes off true to her young twenties age, but even though the arrangement she makes with Michael is initially for money, I liked that she didn't try to take advantage of her position (as no doubt many young women would). Instead she seems to genuinely like Michael and wants to show him that she does have a strong work ethic and moral character, despite what it might seem. And Michael really is a sweet, and wonderful man. Though they are brought together by a mutual sexual attraction, he really cares for Kayla and listens to her concerns and feelings about their arrangement. Sure it's a fantasy - rich older man falls for poor younger woman, and can give her anything her heart desires. It's insta-love at its finest, with some sexy scenes between them but with the sense that they've established enough of a connection to make a relationship between them believable. 4 stars.

I've enjoyed Weatherspoon's earlier books, so even though the premise behind this one sounded particularly unappealing (a down-on-her-financial-luck post-college-age woman signs up with a "sugar daddy" dating service), I decided to give it a try. Unfortunately, it was even less my cup of tea than the premise had suggested, in large part because the first person narrative spends a lot of time telling rather than showing a sexual romantic connection being forged between our 24-year-old black heroine and our 49-year-old white hero. No idea why these two appeal to each other, beyond the fact that the heroine isn't fawning and gold-digging over the super-rich tech hero. No real conflict in the story, either. Particularly disliked the plot twist regarding the heroine's friendship with her roommate/best friend, which came out of left field and made me doubt the narrator's judgment. Have to side with the heroine's mother here when she's pretty upset hearing about this older white guy paying the expenses for her far younger black daughter...

This booooooook. I'm just lying down on the floor, thinking about it all and I must say this book is amazing and I think it's addicting and so easy to get into. It's also really fun and I spent a good amount of time laughing and swooning so A+ for that!

Kayla and Michael were my little tiny bunnies and I love them together, so much? One of my favorite trope is age gap between the ship and oh my god, does this one have it *wink* But yet again they were also really cute together, like small quirks between them and what they said to each other even though they have known each other for about of little time. I kinda liked their relationship really much and yep, this was a good read *high five*

I gotta read more Rebekah Weatherspoon's books because they just sound so fascinating and SO SWEET was definitely up in my alley. Basically it's about a broke black girl, (hot) sugar daddies, age gap and lots of fun!
