Having loved two series that this author wrote, I was both eager and hesitant to dive into this series, eager because his writing is amazing and hesitant because this was one of the first series he wrote and I didn't want to be disappointed because his other series are phenomenal. I need not have worried though because I ended up loving this series.
Plot wise this was incredibly fast paced and exciting. The action starts right away and it's breakneck speed from there. I had to take several deep breaths when I finished this because it took my breath away with it's relentless pace. Absolutely non stop!!! It's not just the action that was non stop, it was also the emotions I had while reading this. I think I went through them all!! When the gang leave the biosphere, they come out to a world that's changed forever. I loved how the author portrayed the aliens and found myself quite frightened by them, especially with what they were doing! He has created a unique spin on the classic invading alien story and I raced through this to see how it'd end.
One thing I've seen with this author, is his amazing ability to write great and memorable characters. This one is no different!! Sophie is one strong, fierce main character and I was rooting for her the whole way through. She is smart, confident, headstrong, and relatable. Each of the characters are well written and developed and I pretty much liked them all!!
In all, this surpassed my expectations. I wasn't sure what to expect from it, but what I got was an exciting, edge of your seat read. It drew me in and I devoured it!! It's movie worthy good! If you're on the fence about reading this, don't be. Give it a go... you might be pleasantly surprised! It's fiction, it's there to be enjoyed :)
White Sands and Red Sands are short stories.... In White Sands, we see brothers Jeff and David, along with their stepmom, heading to see their dad, Michael. From there we see what happens them from the moment the Orbs appear. In Red Sands, we see more of the boys and also get a look at Dr. Hoffman and his escape ship.
Both of the short stories were very much needed, in order to answer some unanswered questions from the main books. I loved seeing the boys and getting to know what exactly happened them. I was also glad to read about Dr Hoffman, though I'm still not sure what to think of him!!
Well written and developed, these shorts, and indeed the whole series is a must read!!
This review addresses the entire Orbs Series, Books 1-4 including two shorts, Red Sands and White Sands. Suggest reading the prequel shorts first, but it doesn't matter. Just read from the beginning of the series to get the most from this exciting SciFi story. Several characters traverse the entire series.
Plot. Earth is invaded, a handful of humans survive to save the human race, and the earth itself - even taking you to Mars. The aliens are sucking up all the water on this planet, and other worlds in the cosmos. Lakes, rivers, streams, oceans, the snow from mountain tops, ice, and ... the human body. As the climate changes, temperatures soar, and more humans are gobbled up. Cut to a huge space ship that has abducted some humans and other life forms and it is speeding through space headed for........no spoilers. Did you know alien blood is blue?
Liked. Length. Just a personal thing. Long stories are yummy. This series is close to 40 hours of listening in unabridged audiobook format. Narration, production is fine, no sex, no language inappropriate to the scene. Given this is very futuristic, sexism is not an issue - there are many strong female characters - yea!
Not so hot? Not too much. You may get attached to a few characters that become alien munchies, but that's SciFi. Hard to roll your eyes at fantasies - but you may. 🙄
Written by Nicholas Sansbury Smith, narrated by Bronson Pinchot, released in 2019 by Blackstone Audio, Inc. Okay for the SciFi fan world, but not so much if you are not a fan of gooey aliens and monster spiders.
If I was reading this instead of listening to it, I probably would return it or leave it on the shelf. If your gonna write SF then do some research. The characters are well done and the story is pretty good but the premises of the story line are just not believable. I highly doubt it but maybe I'm just too smart for this book or maybe I'm just too picky. The reason for the alien invasion is completely ludicrous and an outdated and much used cliché that has been disproven and dismissed as any kind of logical reason for an invasion. The "reason" the aliens invade, what they want is so prevalent, available and so easily obtained elsewhere that is ludicrous that an alien species that can travel, in the author's words, millions of light years would come all that way to get it. There are also so many other things that you just have to go "well ok gonna have to ignore that glaring inconsistency or obvious fallacy". A team that is "vetted" to go into solitude in a biome for 6 months but then act like a bunch of HS teenagers in a zombie flick is ridiculous. Not to mention "state of the art, bleeding edge A.I. that are slow and stupid. If you can get around those few I mentioned and a few more then you will probably enjoy this fine but if that stuff makes you nuts might want to skip this one. The writing is well done and the characters are likeable (some hateable on purpose XD) and the pacing is pretty good. I hope this gets better.
Orbs is a fantastic post-apocalyptic alien invasion story. This 3 books for 1 credit is a steal! Nicholas Sansbury Smith is one of my favorite authors and his books never disappoint! Bronson Pinchot does an excellent job with the narration! I blew through these three books so quick and didn't want it to end! Thankfully there is a fourth book and a prequel book.
I have just finished books 1 through 3 along with the short stories. Amazing writer who even when you're not engrossed in the books themselves, you find yourself thinking about the story. A great new twist to the ever poplar 'little green men '. Now, going into book 4!
Other than a couple of the Marines and Jeff, I didn't really like most of the main characters of this series. Especially Sophie. I do look forward to reading the last book of the series to hopefully answer some questions.
I like books by Nicholas Sansbury Smith, and this series did not disappoint. Generally his book are a mix between military fiction and science fiction. The series kept me wondering and worrying about the protagonists until the end.
Great read starts slow but persevere, you will not be disappointed. Fabulous series, first time I've read books from Nicholas. Love the theme spiders and globe's that devour any thing that lives.
Nicholas Sansbury Smith has a way of grabbing your attention with these stories and sucking you in. Great story lines, easy to imagine the scenes, like you are right there with them. Very good read!
Gave up, simply annoying, great science team, not a clue among them. The Timothy character is a cliché, but really, part of this great science team? No. So many other annoying issues, can't continue. How did the spiders get past the blast doors? A secure defence facility breached so easily? Right.

Training for life on the surface of Mars, the crew of the Cheyenne Mountain Biosphere faces an uncertain future.
Dr. Sophie Winston had been training for the Mars mission all her life, it seemed. Now finally the preparation was nearly complete. As Team Leader for the first Mars colonists she would lead her crew into the Biosphere in Cheyenne Mountain They would be learning how to survive in the enclosed environment simulating the journey to Mars on board the Secundo Casu, humanity's Second Chance, and the maintenance of the Biosphere on Mars. Dr. Hoffman, CEO of the New Tech Corporation and designer of the spacecraft and biosphere habitat on Mars, accompanied Dr. Winston and introduced her to her crew.
Joining Dr. Winston in the Cheyenne Mountain Biosphere were Saafi Yool, engineer, Dr. Emanuel Rodriguez, biologist, Dr. Holly Brown, psychiatrist, and Timothy Roberts, programmer. Sophie knew Emanuel from the team investigating the Solar Storms of 2055, when a huge Coronal Mass Ejection baked and irradiated 15% of the Earth's surface. Investigation into the event showed that magnetic forces originating on Mars had guided and intensified the CME. The results of that investigation had led to the development of the Secundo Casu and the Mars project.
The Biosphere was entered through a series of airlocks and decontamination chambers, leading into a series of chambers or biomes where a garden would be grown, a huge pool of water to supply their needs, laboratories, living quarters and kitchen/cafeteria. There were also some livestock to supply them with eggs, milk, and meat. The team quickly adjusted to living in the Biosphere, as they had trained to survive in the harsh conditions of Mars.
Conditions quickly began to deteriorate as they lost contact to the outside world. Something caused the deaths of the livestock. They seemed to go crazy, battering themselves to death trying to escape their confinement. Something was driving the animals to madness. Investigations outside indicated that an alien force or presence was stealing the water from the world's surface. Thousands of glowing blue orbs littered the ground, each orb proving to contain a human or animal being drained of the water in their bodies. Strange alien creatures were processing the harvest of water as the planet's surface was turned into an arid wasteland. The Earth is losing it's future to the invaders, and everything is not going well.
The characters quickly become familiar, facing certain extinction, their strengths and weaknesses become apparent as they learn to deal with their survival, and discover that things are not as they seem. The action is desperate as the survivors fight for their existence.
With surprising twists and unexpected developments, the storyline is character driven. And the characters deal with fear and frustration as they fight for the survival of the Earth. This is a remarkable series. As the surviving characters fight to continue existence in a world being extinguished, the storyline breaks from Earth to the supposed safety of the inner planets. What awaits them on Mars is . . . for you to find out for yourself! Scratch, scrape! I heartily recommend enjoying this dystopian future! And you can't beat the price!
Training for life on the surface of Mars, the crew of the Cheyenne Mountain Biosphere face situations not covered in their training as things go sideways around them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this series. The only downside: it ended! My only hope is that the author decides to write a new trilogy that answer my one nagging question, and that follows our heroes on their next journey.
I loved that the main female character was one of the key heroes, was so very strong, motivated, passionate about her work and self assured. All of the characters were interesting and well-developed. There were multiple plots...not too many, not to few. Enough to advance the story, maintain interest and make a great read.
The meat of the story, as it were, is alien invasion. And if a fiction novel can be realistic, this one certainly was. There were few, if any typos or grammatical errors. I highly recommend this set.
I have read this omnibus and the fourth one in the series too. Loved them all!
Look, I get it, the 'suspension of belief' does get a bit stretched in this book what with trips to Mars, moon and some planet in a different system piloted by total novices. However, what were you expecting picking a post-apocalyptic novel with the name 'orbs'?
Excellent character arcs. Author made no bones in killing off characters too which was a plus. Good dialogue, nothing heavy and sci-fi was average but tolerable. Overall, a value for money product. Worth your money and time, please buy first hand.
I enjoy reading Sci-Fi, but new ideas and well written books have been hard to come by over the years. This series has it all; original & riveting story-line, excellent character development, creepy aliens, stuff of nightmares. These are what readers expect when they read a book written by this author. He never fails. An award winning author, with good reason. Read this series, it will not disappoint.
This series knocked my socks off! Absolutely LOVE the story and am addicted to this authors books. This particular series is my absolute favorite. Definitely will read again and again. Edge of your seat storyline and had a hard time putting it down. Can't wait to see what he comes up with next! Get these books and your favorite beverage, have a comfortable seat and begin one heck of an adventure!!!!
The 'Orbs' series is a complete and yet complex science fiction series that details the resiliency and perseverance of the human race when faced with ultimate extinction.
I highly recommend this entire series to anyone who enjoys an excellent sci-fi tale filled with suspense, action and determination. Outstandingly well done!
I thought I was getting to read a good book. I had read his books extinction which I thought was a very good read. In this book I couldn't wait for the main character to die. This is one of the worst books that I have read. The ratings were so good I thought it must be a good read. Was I ever wrong
This series has man struggling to survive while they try to find answers to what is happening around them. The characters are strong and the tale is both scary and exciting. If you like sci-fi and apocalyptic fiction this is the series for you!
The author clearly states that this is not hard SF, so one should approach it with that in mind. I read all three books in the box set, but I doubt if I'll pick up book 4 to finish the series. The story wasn't bad ... I just didn't find it to my taste. As a retired engineer, perhaps I had trouble with some of the main story elements.
Nicholas Sansbury Smith writes a fun sci-fi story. The action is realistic. The bonds formed between the characters, makes you care what happens to them. The short stories are my favorite <3
Loved everything about this set of books. So much thought and imagination put into every page. Spiders from Mars and far worse what’s not to love. I want more and more of this series.
If you like end of the world scenarios then this is going to be a good read for you! Tad bit too depressing but I imagine an alien takeover wouldn't be anything but depressing.
I just finished the four book Orbs series. It was so good I couldn't stop until I finished. Books 1 - 3 are available in one volume. I recommend this series t anyone who liked science fiction and survival fiction
Absolutely brutally agonizing but I read the entire series and I've also read all the short stories save 2 prequel stories. I plan to read them one day, call me a masochist but I need to finish the entire series even if I can not stand it.
