For Shane Clifford, things can't possibly get any worse. What should have been an idyllic vacation - a week of snowboarding at one of Canada's most beautiful ski resorts - becomes toxic when his wife tearfully confesses her infidelity. Overcome with grief, all Shane wants is to get away, but a freak storm has closed the roads, and it seems there will be no escape from his torment until the weather clears. Yet when Shane snaps and tries to leave the resort against all advice, he soon discovers that there is more on the mountain than just snow and trees. And things can always get worse...
Born the son of a wealthy philanthropist, Griffiths was orphaned by crime at a formative age, and subsequently raised by the family's kindly butler.
Nursing a bone-deep rage at the loss of his parents, Griffiths invested his inherited billions into extensive combat training and the development of sophisticated technology which he now uses to bring justice to the streets of -
No, wait. That's Batman. Sheesh. I always do this.
I was born in Wales, and lost myself in books as soon as I discovered them. That kid who hangs out in the library. Yeah, that was me.
I never wanted to be anything other than a writer/superhero and eventually I moved to London, finding work as a journalist and editor, before turning to writing horror and science fiction, and being continually amazed that people actually read it.
This novella makes a brilliant addition to my Wildfire Chronicles collection, although it could be read as a stand alone short story in its own right. K.R.Griffiths is my favourite horror writer, if a writer could make you jump it would be his books. There are only a few characters in the story which is set at night at a ski resort. It is all extremely eerie and atmospheric. Definitely one to make you look over your shoulder. Loved the book waiting for the next one now as I have read everything else he has written.
I'm not fan of zombies but I do quiet like this author, and the short novel keeps you reading until the end hopping for a happy one. I love how Mr Griffiths describe the necessary of each escene and don't let a heavy feeling of unecessary information pull the story down. Last resort is a must for the wildfire world but can be read as a stand alone too.
What to say about this novella? Wow! Big Bang in a short story and shocking all the way to the end. This was a great twist on a scary scenario. Highly recommended by me.
As much as I loathe zombie books this short story was quite a good story. That being said, I won't be reading the series. I would recommend it to zombie lovers everywhere.
The last two words of this book are also the title. Thought that was kind of cool.
This is not a review. It is my version of the book in less than three paragraphs. Feel free to read if you never actually intend on reading the book (short story).
So this guy and girl are on a vacation in the mountains and then she tells him she cheated on him or some shit and he's all like wahhhh I don't want to be here with you anymore I'm leaving. But then HE CAN'T LEAVE. OMG, CUE SCARY MUSIC. An all-of-a-sudden snow storm (should have checked the weather channel) strikes their cabin and all the power goes out and the guy and girl hear gun shots and screaming and the resort owner or front desk clerk or whatever comes and says you all need to get to the main building because there's a bunker there and will protect you from this horrible storm.
So then the couple, looking out their front door into the tornado-like snow storm in the middle of the night, decide it's in their best interest to WALK to the main building even though they can't see it and don't remember where it is. First mistake. And then they hear more scary noises and stuff and now they're being chased around by a vampire bear and somehow get away. Guy loses girl. Guy decides to leave cabin resort and go down the mountain. Guy finds nearby town with nobody in it except this convenience store owner who is hiding in his office. Convenience store owner tells him that everyone, including animals, are all zombies now and they are attracted to noise. So he's like, omg, did you see my fiancé? Because fuck the zombies right? So he leaves the store and finds his fiancé in a hotel in the town and now they hugging and not hating each other anymore. Then the big climax...
Gun shot. All the zombies hear. Guy/girl are done for. To shoot zombies or shoot themselves? Last Resort. Boom.

It’s crazy-time, as eyeless grizzly bears chase the characters and devour anyone that they find. Very gradually Shane and Kelly’s problems seem more and more irrelevant in the face of almost certain danger. The phones have all gone out. There’s no internet or electrical power or television. The lodge is in the middle of whiteout conditions, where you can’t even see the danger until it’s right on top of you. If it weren’t for occasional screams and shots. Shane and Kelly wouldn’t have even known something terrible was going on until it was too late.
The ‘zombies’ of this tale aren’t standard zombies. They’re still mortal and you can still kill them in the normal ways. They’re alive, they just appear to have had portions of their brains turned off.
A few details are off. They know the creatures hunt at least partially by sound, yet the characters compromise their hiding place in a noisy fashion.
It’s an interesting tale in which someone out in the middle of nowhere, without the news, could be caught out in the zombie apocalypse.
First off, I love the setting. A resort outside of Jasper in Alberta gets hit by a killer blizzard. It takes about two seconds in this novella for the gory action to begin. The 84 pages go fast. It is like reading a comic book. We do not get a chance to bond with the characters and the suspense of such a sudden change of events does not take hold. It is because this is a teaser to a series. It seems that authors cannot write a standalone book when the subject is 'the world is falling apart'. Zombies, survivalist, aliens...whatever the premise, all require a multi-book series. There are so many competing offers in this genre that it has to be superlative to follow and invest in. I am going to read the next two because they are free on the Kindle.
I don't usually read novellas but I do love this author so I thought I'd give it a try. I had no idea what the book was about, but knew it would frighten me....it did not disappoint!! This is not your typical zombie novel and I am not sure if zombie is quite the word I would use to describe the "monsters". I hope there is more like this coming soon as I liked the change of pace and I loved that I was actually frightened by the situation this couple was placed in!! I really can't go into detail since each reader needs to get wowed by each turn of events. Again, it is only 83 pages but it doesn't skimp on the details.
Once I started, there was no going back. I LOVE this author. He never disappoints!
A young couple, vacationing at a ski resort in the Canadian Rockies, in the middle of a horrendous storm discover their very lives are in jeopardy. From who, or what I cannot say. I don't want to ruin it for anyone. But run for their lives they did, and what comes next I leave you to discover! I will only say it sure surprised me. Never saw it coming! So in my opinion, it was perfect. Keep up the good work Mr. Griffiths!! I love reading your stories! A big thumbs up!
This was a great story, but after reading the Wildfire Chronicles first, it all seemed a little anticlimactic (I would much have preferred this story to be directly included in the Wildfire world building, similar to what the author did in World War Z) So my issues are mainly contextual. If you have never read the Wildfire books though, have at it. You'll likely love it. I am jealous of you being able to discover this zombie mythology for the first time.
This is a short read (81 pages on my Kindle) but it packs a punch. It has everything you could want in a horror book - atmospheric and sinister, tension and thrills and imaginative “killers”.
Shane thinks he's having a bad day. His wife has just admitted she slept with another man while he was away on a tour of duty in the army. Now he's trying to drive away from their skiing holiday in whiteout conditions.
But he has no idea how much worse his day is going to get.....
Another fast-paced, tautly-written shocker from KR Griffiths.
I enjoyed this book very much. You can always count on Mr. Griffiths for the fear factor. It is set in Canada where a couple are vacationing, but something strange is happening to the animals and eventually the people.
I did not know this book was part of a series. I must now read them all. Great idea for a book. I so didn't see where it was going at first. I was thinking some Bigfoot like creature was hunting them. Awesome. I'm hooked now.
A short story edition of sorts to The Wildfire Chronicles. The ending was a bit of an anti climax in light of the series; would liked to have seen it go a different way.
