Joseph Delaney was a full time writer living in Lancashire, in the heart of Boggart territory.

He was the author of Wardstone Chronicles, Starblade Chronicles, Arena 13, Aberrations and a new book came out in April 2020, Brother Wulf. This is a new spooks story featuring Tom and Alice, but introducing a new character, a young monk called Brother Wulf.

He first got the idea for the Spooks series when he moved to the village where he lives now and discovered there was a local boggart - ‘a man like me needs boggarts around’. He made a note in his notebook ‘a story about a man who hunts boggarts’ and years later when he had to come up with an idea at short notice developed this into ‘The Spook’s Apprentice’, the first book in the series.

He continued to draw upon the folklore of Lancashire and has acquired much local knowledge over the years which he tweaks and modifies to create his fictional world. Another source of inspiration has been Lancashire's varied and atmospheric landscape. Many of the locations in the County are based on actual places in Lancashire.

In the early days of his writing career Joseph worked as a teacher at a Sixth Form College: his subjects were English, Film and Media Studies. He used to get up early and write every morning before work. That way he could write a book a year – which promptly got rejected! When the Americans bought the series he decided to give up teaching and write full time.

Prior to teaching he worked as an engineer in his twenties, completing an apprenticeship just like Tom Ward in the spook’s books.

Joseph described his method of writing as a process of discovery. He didn’t plot too far ahead and often didn’t know what is going to happen until he writes it down. In other words he made it up as he went along. He prefed writing dialogue to description, in which he said he is a minimalist and leaves much to the reader’s imagination.
Joseph had three children and nine grandchildren and was a wonderful public speaker available for conference, library and bookshop events.

The Spook's Apprentice, The Spook's Curse and The Spook's Secret have all been shortlisted for the Lancashire children's Book for the Year Award. The Spook's Apprentice is the winner of both the Sefton Book Award and the Hampshire Book Award.

This took me agessss to get into, I felt like it started off really slow and was quite uneventful throughout most of the book - which is a shame because I really enjoyed the first one! I have to say this book did feel like it had that second book slump thing going on - though it did get better towards the end. Hopefully the last one will be more eventful!

So the previous book was rather anti-climactic. Here's hoping this one really surges up in its tension. I have a little theory that Hob is actually Math and I know they've fought against each other in the arena but I was speculating if Hob takes on the appearance of every man he's defeated. And he's kept Math as his final doppelganger/lac/djinn appearance. I mean, the mask has to be hiding something.

I could also be totally and absolutely wrong. That sounds more likely.

But it's coming out in June, it's coming out in Juuuune *does a little dance*

Arena 13

Once again Joseph Delaney has written another extremely fantastic book. He wrote the book very well with lots of detail when required. Relationships are very well written especially Lief's relation with Tryon and with Kwin. I would have like to have had a little more action in the Genthai lands but what was written was very good. Overall this is an amazing addition to the Arena 13 Trilogy

Disappointing second installment in the Arena 13 trilogy.

This series seems to be a mish-mash between Frankenstein, Norse mythology, Matrix, The Terminator, Vampire and Werewolf lore with a dash of the post-apocalypse. This made for an interesting, varied world.

However, the characters are extremely annoying. Leif was so stupid and idiotic. This boy had no brain throughout the second book. If you told him to jump off a cliff, he'd do it. Anything for a smidge of acceptance.

In The Prey, Leif's still looking to carry out his revenge against the creepy Hob. He accepts a facial tattoo to gain acceptance in his dad famous Arena 13 warrior Math's Genthai tribe, even though even his dad refused to get the tattoos. At least he had some sense to not uglify himself. Afterwards, Leif is worried about what his "twu wuv" Kwin will think about his new look. Seriously, whenever he had romantic thoughts about her, I cringed. I fail to see what admirable qualities that brat has that marks her out from the rest of the underdeveloped characters in Midgard. Conveniently he's only worth her time of day when she finds out who his dad is. -.-

I liked Tyron and Deinon, but I seriously could not be bothered if the djinn over the Great Barrier finished the other characters off.

Delaney sucks with writing dialogue. I swear all his characters, good or bad, male or female, sound exactly the same: like an old Northern dude.

If the characters didn't make crappy decisions (I'm looking at you, Leif. What dumbass provokes their villain when they're helpless to him, behind a grill. Omg.)

Still, it was a fast read with simple writing and gory fighting scenes, but it felt like a typical filler book. Again, I would of liked more action centred on the actual arena but what can you do? This series had so much promise too, but maybe the last book in the trilogy will be better.

The Prey is a disappointment in contrast to Arena 13. Less action, more soul searching. Leif travels to discover more about his father’s roots, where again he accepts any challenge if they say ‘danger’ is involved. He seems to be anybody’s ‘tool’ or ‘slave’, whether that be Tyron, Kwin, Ada and Konnit.

Not much character development, the pace dragged and the plot just revolved around preparing and talking about taking down Hob for good .

The themes of identity, family, acceptance and female empowerment got lost in this Frankensteinian and Terminator mess, where I had lost any empathy for the characters. Especially when Ada and Kwin manipulated the male characters and had digs against them.

Leif and Kwin’s romance felt hollow. Just another sacrificial plot device for Hob to torture Leif in the showdown that is expected in book 3.

All I can say is “Delaney, step up the action and pace! Thank goodness, this is only a trilogy”

I decided to marathon this series, since I had a day off and always find Delaney's writing so easy to get through quickly. This novel went somewhere that I wasn't expecting, therefore I added half a star onto the rating, I enjoyed it a lot more than the first book.

Once again, Delaney's dialogue is as cringe-worthy as ever, and the characters themselves aren't any different. I rarely feel any sort of love towards anyone as most of the characters aren't entirely developed, and the ones that are annoy me.

Delaney seems to take a lot of aspects from his Spooks series and adds them into this novel. Kwin is basically a mirror image of Grimalkin, Leif is another Tom, and Tyron is of course the Spook himself, all that's changed is the settings and the circumstances.

Something that stunned me about this novel was the use of relative issues. The main character, Leif, is mixed race, something that was mentioned in passing in the first novel, but in this one his race becomes the centre of attention. Bringing up the prejudice that mixed race children suffer in society, as Leif talks about how he doesn't belong to any race, as both sides turn him away. I was so pleasantly surprised that Delaney brought this aspect into the novel, it's a very important topic and I would say that it was handled well.

Again the timing of this novel confused me, while Leif is away with his fathers family, he is taught about electricity, and Mozart is mentioned, and computers. One thing that this book certain lacks is the explanation of how this world came to be, all we know for certainty is that computers were sentient and (most likely) led to the downfall of the human race.

Another averagely good novel by Delaney, and I will definitely move onto the conclusion.

With the fighting season over for the year, Leif travels to find his father's kin - the Genthai. Despite not being
welcomed with open arms and visibly and verbally scorned, Leif lives among them, learning their ways and customs. Some are even more brutal than Hob's and he is sickened by it. It seems the unfairness of the world is spread wide.

Returning to the house of Tyron, he is pleased to see them all. His training regime continues, as Tyron's plans for him slowly slot together. A new force enters their lives - Ada is an accomplished trainer of lacres, and has knowledge of the creatures who keep the human race captured within the barrier of mist and fog around their city. With this knowledge, she builds the fastest, strongest lacre they have ever seen, who will aim to protect Leif in his fights in Arena 13.

But any day, Hob can demand a fight with Leif and they have to be ready. Ada, Tyron and others have constructed a plan to be rid of Hob for good, not realising the wrath that can be brought down on them all.

I liked this part of the trilogy nearly as much as the first despite it being a 'middle' book. The relationships aren't portrayed in a deep and meaningful way, but just enough to make me groan when they made mistakes and cheer out loud when they prevailed over their antagonists. It's a good story, with lots of action, planning and power plays, and this episode explains a little more about the past where things called computers were important to humankind. It was also interesting that the Genthai race are loosely based on the early Maori of New Zealand, with sacred tattooing and life in the bush.

Quite linear but until the last chapters, looking forward to the conclusions to confirm (or not) what's beyond the Barrier. The story lacks the rythm and grind of the Spooks series and may seem gratuitously complex.

I like this series. It is very different from the Last Apprentice (Spook) series. The really interesting thing is the world. Obviously, it is post apocalyptical. On New Zealand? Not so obvious. I think that Mr. Delaney could write a great prequel series. Or just fill in the blanks as this series goes along.
