This is a short, action packed prequel to the novel Family Reunion. It follows several characters who are travelling across America to a family reunion just as a flu type virus brings on the zombie apocalypse.

Ryan is on a Puget Sound ferry when the outbreak begins and is trapped by zombies everywhere. I liked him instantly because he is terrified to the point of panic and physically wetting himself. He is also vomiting at the sight of mauled bodies which is also a believable reaction for an ordinary man. I liked that realism in the character. It was nice to see a male character so scared instead of being big and brave. He is close to the meeting point for the family and tries to keep in touch with brother Max. Max is at the airport to collect his stepdaughter Lisa but the military have quarantined the building, leaving Mike to find a way in as Lisa tries to find a way out.

I liked the switching POV of these three characters as we followed the different problems they had-Max dealing with jittery soldiers, Lisa dealing with pervert airport workers and zombies, and Ryan dealing with more zombies than he can handle. It keeps the action non stop and the tension high and I felt that for it being a short story, it kept you interested and you cared what happened to these three people.

My very slight niggle is that the characters don't want to use the word zombie to describe the infected. We seem to get lots of novels that call them all kinds of strange variations. In this book, zombies are called 'zekes'. I don't get it personally...I mean, 'zombies' was good enough for the likes of Romero! For me, if it is trying to eat your brains, it'a zombie! Seriously, that's just my preference and makes no difference to me in the story!

I am very interested in going on to read the first novel in the series which follows all of the family who are making the journey, hoping to find each other safe and sound. I think this series has great potential and I'm excited to read it!

I liked this short story and the fact that it introduces us to main characters in the upcoming series "FAMILY REUNION". It gets into the action pretty quick, giving us an idea about the character and personality of some members of the Brant family and their harried journey to get to their agreed upon reunion site. The background on the characters are quick but gives you an idea of what to expect and they practical, impulsive, ingenious. Ryan Brant is not the oldest but he is over fifty and while fit and has some training realizes pretty quick he is over his head and does the practical thing and hides. No, I didn't consider cowardice but common sense. His older brother Max and his step daughter Lisa have their own problems when they get stuck at an airport and that is where the impulsive and ingenious part comes in. The virus is raging through the cities and they just want to get away from the crowds and make their predestined location. If you are waiting for the release of the full novel then this short story is worth your the time.

This is another story about the zombie apocalypse, this time it's happening on the West Coast. It's about a family who seems to be used to getting what they want through slinging words and BS around as well as using their intimidating physical presence as well to get people to do what they want.

***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS*** ***SPOILERS***

Another thing that I didn't like about this book was the Ryan character, everything is just too convenient for him. He has combat training from being in the Coast Guard, he also seems to come across things to help him a little to conveniently. Like things that he can use as weapons, actual weapons (Firearms), military hardware, etc. I just don't like the character.

The character of Mike is also someone who I didn't like. He rolled up to a military blockade at an airport and thought he could just throw his weight around and get what he wanted. I loved the fact that the commanding officer there calmly pulled his firearm and pointed at his head as the other soldiers tackled Mike and cuffed him. Then he was told that martial law had been declared and to clear out before they killed him. That is the one part of the book I really liked. It's nice to see in fiction, when people who in real life have all this power because of status, money, family, and positions of power suddenly lose all that and become powerless when society crumbles and a gun is pointed at them.

That was really the only part of the book that I liked and it gets an extra star because of that.

So this book was really not interesting to me, the story was pretty standard, the characters were flat and one dimensional, and I have really no desire to read the other books that will come later in the series. Give this one a pass

In For A Dollar In For A Dime is a short story and also the intro to P. Mark DeBryan’s book Family Reunion, which is one of my top favorite books of 2015. This short story will draw you into the lives of a few of the characters during the beginning of a crazy apocalypse that is starting out as a bad case of the flu but blows up into a full blown epidemic of man eating creatures. With the whole family heading to Washington for the big family reunion and this pandemic breaking out, the action starts and doesn’t let up. There is a big cast of characters because this is written about one…big family all trying to make it to the meeting place with some unfortunately not as lucky as others. Pleased do yourself a big favor and download this story and you will then want to continue the journey on and read Family Reunion!

Entertaining read, but was a cheat of a short story - not fleshed out, without a real story arc. It felt like the author felt he had enough for the free short story, so he just stopped. Perhaps it should have been advertised as the first chapter of the first novel and it could have gotten more stars (although there is a major scene missing). There was also at least one phrase that seemed glaringly offensive - and I am not offended easily... I think I liked the three main characters, somewhat too soon to tell.

People turned into crazed flesh eaters by a vaccine created to prevent the spread of the world's newest pandemic. Freaks! The Bryant family are fighting to find their way back together!
Excellently written characters, with nail biting suspense and edge of your seat action. This tale leaves us dangeling off a cliff.
Luckily this great short resumes in, Family Reunion, the new novel by P Mark DeBryan,
Go buy it!

Well written and engaging

October is such a lovely time to read zombie stories. This one is engaging and well-written for a short story and definitely leaves you wanting more at the end . I was happy to see that the characters are continued in a full-length novel that is available on Kindle unlimited. Just downloaded it!

The writing style is rough but affective. There is a lot of family history crammed in that doesn't seem necessary. The actual story is interesting but scattered. It's like when someone tells an exciting story for the first time. The details are a bit out of order because the teller is so frantic to tell it. Overall an OK intro to a series.

In for a Dollar in for a Dime
P.Mark DeBryan’s prequel to Family Reunion.

This is the prequel to Family Reunion.(A must read series) We follow Ryan Brent as he makes his way to his brother Max and his daughter Lisa on the way to the family reunion. As they were in transit a pandemic breaks out of the South African Flu. The CDC was commissioned to create a vaccine to combat this outbreak. From there things rapidly decline.
P.Mark DeBryan shows the hellish struggles one would endure if they were traveling at the time of a pandemic, not only the struggles but coming to term with what they are witnessing. What type of restrictions the powers that be, (our government) would impose of the public in this scenario.
Mr. DeBryan created a wonderful series in Family Reunion & Family Reunion J. I am waiting on pins and needles waiting for what will come next.
If your family is spread across the country what would you be willing to do to be reunited? Would you follow the government restrictions or would you do anything to get out of their quarantine? How would you get to where you need to be?

Quick read; setting the tone for perhaps a larger series. Little stretch regarding finding each other at the airport which was in lock-down.
