B.A., University of Michigan; Th.M., Dallas Theological Seminary; Ph.D., Northwestern University
A native of Michigan, Richards entered the world on September 25, 1931, to faith-affirming parents. His father served as an elder in their Presbyterian church, and Richards grew up immersed in religious education classes. However, he lost his interest in religion, later decided to enroll at Antioch College, and lacking any guiding factor in his life, he enlisted in the Navy.
Stationed in New York City, Richards encountered Donald Grey Barnhouse who led him to rededicate his life to the Lord. This forever changed Richards who finished his Navy time and went back to school to receive his bacherlor's degree in philosophy. After getting married, Richards attended Dallas Theological Seminary and was ordained in 1962. Moving to Illinois he worked as an editor for Scripture Press Publications and as an associate pastor. His role of overseeing the church education program and teaching a Bible class concerned him. Richards believed that Christian education, practice, and theory needed to be changed and reevaluated.
While teaching as an Assistant Professor of Christian Education at Wheaton College Graduate School, Richards also applied himself to Ph.D. studies. His dissertation research provided him with the framework for his Sunday School PLUS curriculum, and a summer seminar with Wheaton faculty resulted in a book called A New Face for the Church. The impact of this book led Richards to become a full-time author and speaker at conventions and seminars. A prolific writer, Richards has penned over 200 works with much of his writing having been translated into 24 languages.
With his emphasis on the theory of Christian education, Richards has created many changes in the church environment, but he also has taken some criticism. As a researcher and writer, Richards hasn't put his theories to the test in the church or the classroom as he once did. Some practitioners have disagreed with his ideas based on their troubles implementing them. However, other people have found that Richards has found a way to teach Bible content productively, and his approach to teaching Sunday school is the one most used by curriculum publishers.
Currently Larry, who is a member of the International Society of Deliverance Ministers, writes on biblical demonology on the blog www.demondope.com. He conducts FREEDOM WORKSHOPS in churches and communities around the country. These workshops and any personal ministry are offered at no charge to individuals and to sponsoring groups.
I found this to be easy to understand. It offers a wealth of information pertaining to spiritual warfare. Spiritual warfare is very real and something we face each and every day. The book offers an abundance of information as to what to look for and how to fight an effective spiritual battle against the evil, lies, misinformation, and wiles of Satan. This book offers 13 gifts the God has given us that enable us to experience some of God's eternal community of love in the here and now. At the end of each gift there is a summary and Scripture is given thoughout the book which makes for some very good devotional or Bible study. I have already selected several other books by Lawrence Richards for further Bible study and enrichment.
It seems strange to consider: The Creator of the universe is at war with one of his own creatures. The cosmic battle with evil is real, however, and spilling over into the lives of unsuspecting dwellers here on earth. In this evangelically friendly approach to spiritual warfare, Richards describes the invisible war raging around us. Through careful analysis and exceptional scriptural insight, he exposes the origin of evil, the demonic hierarchy, and Satan's current strategies. Richards then helps God's people go on the offensive. This revealing look at deliverance will help even the most cautious believers participate in Jesus's victory and move confidently to defeat the power of darkness in their own lives.
Satan Exposed highlights and emphasizes Biblical truths about how Satan works to deceive, confuse, distract, and destroy. This book is a wealth of knowledge on common sense truths that are brought to the light for intentional thought. Christians of all maturity levels could glean truths and habits worthy of consideration from this book. It was almost prophetic as I read parts of it during the pandemic. This is a book to return to again and again. The only reason I didn’t give five stars is bc it was repetitive, which, all in all, is not a bad thing when being taught about your enemy who prowls around, seeking to steal, kill, and destroy.
Satan Exposed is all about spiritual warfare but it is much more about thoughts, beliefs and attitudes than it is about confronting and casting out demonic entities. In fact, it is not about the latter at all. But that’s o.k. because according to a prominent deliverance minister that I heard recently, 80% of deliverance is about renewing our minds from believing lies to believing truths. So that is what this book is all about, and it is much needed in the body of Christ.
The author begins with an introduction to the invisible war and how humankind got to where we are today. Unless you are totally new to this type of information this will probably be review for you.
Section two is where the good stuff begins. For each chapter of which he begins with “The Gift of…” (as examples: The Gift of Family, The Gift of Peace), the author goes over the tactics of the enemy which are not in mere list form but includes clear real life examples of how each tactic is frequently played out.
A few of these tactics are (list is not meant to be exhaustive):
to encourage relativism to isolate age groups to distort our concept of God to convince believers that they are unlovable to increase the accusation to convince us that God is both capricious and easily angered to attack our sense of self-worth to use wealth to corrupt a person’s character to erode the concept of truth to cause doubt
Personal stories and scriptural citations also abound and directly tie into each point the author is trying to make.
One of the best things I liked about this book was that it did not stop with talking about the bad, but in every chapter in section two it included a list of ideas to be pro-active on the positive side.
If you are a Christian interested in spiritual warfare and particularly in renewing your mind, this book is worth it for you. If you are looking for a book that talks about how to cast out demons this is not the book for you.
