The Chicken Chronicles: How Chickens Ruined My Reputation

Rate this book
Never before has the dark and twisted psychosis of the backyard chicken been revealed. . . until now.

Forget everything you think you know about chickens. You only know part of the truth. No one speaks of their sexual deviance and dark unknowable rituals. Flock keepers have remained silent on chicken's potential to disrupt familial harmony through sleep deprivation, needy behavior, binge eating and random acts of violence.

This tale is the recollection of one woman's desperate struggle to hold on to her family, her friends, and her very sanity after she stumbled into the trap of urban chicken keeping.

When family finances got a little tight, Jennifer Mervine decided that there was no reason she couldn't raise a small flock of chickens in the backyard. She had a few problems convincing her husband and getting around some county ordinances and zones, but she soon got her project underway. The ensuing pages are totally hilarious, even if I was a little grossed out at times! And I learned a LOT about chickens!

Thanks to Goodreads First Reads for making this book available to me free of charge, and MANY thanks to the author for brightening my life tremendously!

Funny & informative! Mervine has strong voice as a writer: clear, funny, take-no-prisoners. This is presented as a series of journal entries during her first year of chicken keeping. The goings on of her flock and her reaction to their shenanigans is priceless. I loved her handwritten notes sprinkled throughout. Wish there were pictures of her little feathered freaks! If you have chickens or are considering getting some, you should really read this.

A great book, full of hilarious descriptions of not quite prehistoric creatures. Against all expectation or intent (mine) I learned quite a lot about the keeping of chickens. Against all expectation or intent (the author) I still want some. Looking forward to more publications from this author, in this subject or any other!
