Mal, Evie, Jay, and Carlos are the offspring of some of the most terrible villains of all time. They're offered a chance to leave the Isle of the Lost, where they have been imprisoned all their lives, and go to prep school in the idyllic kingdom of Auradon with all of the 'good' kids. There, they must choose whether or not to follow in their parents' evil footsteps. Watch out Auradon--here come the Descendants!
This Disney channel movie novelization starts out right where The Isle of the Lost ended. Mal, Evie, Jay and Carlos have spent their whole lives on the Isle, because of their villainous parents. But when Prince Ben declares that the 'innocent' children of the Isle of the Lost should be given a second chance, they find themselves sent to Auradon, with a special mission from their parents to take down the kingdom and bring Fairy Godmother's wand to Maleficent. Will the Descendants continue on with the evil legacies set by their parents? Or will they find some goodness in their hearts after all?
I didn't like this quite as much as I did the prequel ( by Melissa De La Cruz ). It was a lot shorter and if I hadn't read The Isle of the Lost first, then I wouldn't know much about the setting of the Isle or the group of Descendants or Auradon. This one didn't have much about the side characters either. And I felt that some of the MC's seemed pretty different in this book compared to the sequel...But this was a movie novelization and both the adapting author and writers of the Disney movie 'The Descendants' were different from the author of the prequel, so even though it was a bit annoying, it made sense why. But it was a cute, quick read so I can't complain too much. I'll definitely be checking out 'Return to the Isle of the Lost' by Melissa De La Cruz when it is released in a few months.
It was nice to see what happened to the heroes and villains in the movies that we grew up with. The next generation all seem to be cool. Glad that Mal, Evie, Carlos, and Jay are doing well at Auradon. Wonder who the villains' significant others are.
Just to clarify, I never watched the movie, nor have I ever heard of a movie about the Descendants.
3.5 stars.
I almost didn’t want to read the book, as the cover for this one is just terrible and horrendous, and it doesn’t make me want to read the book, nor (when I found out) watch the movie. Yes, I am still a cover lover, and covers need to attract me. But I decided for once to just go for the blurb and check it out, and I am glad I did as the story was fantastic.
Welcome to a world where Good and Evil are separated. Good is on one side in Auradon, and the Evil is all locked up on the Isle of Lost. I was kind of confused about this happening, but luckily we get a quick rundown on the situation and it quickly became clear what happened.
I thought the idea of getting the kids of the worst villains all time to a prep school was hilarious, what could possibly go wrong? I mean, you ask the kid of Maleficent, the kid of the Evil Queen, the kid of Cruella de Ville and lastly the kid of Jafar, to just go to a peaceful kingdom? What did you expect, happiness and unicorns? These kids have had a lifetime of evil, with parents drilling them in the art of it. It was really fun to see them get thrown in a country with so much goodness.
The ex-supervillains, it was delighted to see them all, though I was disappointed with how they acted and how stuck they were in their ways. Jafar was the only one who I wasn’t surprised by. I had a feeling that he would be like this since he was quite useless in the Alladin movie. J
But seeing Cruella de Ville being totally unstable and hugging some kind of plushie/keychain, seeing the Evil Queen all like that, Maleficent still being a bitch but just without too much powers so she was kind of lame. And even with all this happening, they still wanted to take revenge, they still wanted to be evil. Oh well, guess supervillains just never learn. Especially since they decide that their kids going to school will be a brilliant time to do something for them. I won’t say what, just read the book, but I was laughing quite a bit. Even stuck they never learn. J Evil through and through.
I am also kind of confused, so the Isle of Lost is the place to dump all the evil stuff, and yet there is a difference between evil evil and evil? As in the book quite often people that live in the village are just called villagers and then there is a separate part of the others like Maleficent? I know that Maleficent and some other are like the uber evil, but seriously, it just made me wonder what the villagers did. They must be evil, otherwise they wouldn’t have been transported to this land, but apparently they aren’t that evil that deserve a better role in life.
I did like that at times we had big capslock parts (at least on my ereader it was in big caps) where Mal (I am guessing it was her) would talk to us. Telling us more than often how hilarious this all was and she was making fun off a lot of things. It was fun and it gave the book the extra dimension it really needed.
Our actual main character is Mal, but we also see the POV of all the other characters. Which at times it was a bit annoying as it jumped around from one to another, but luckily I felt that the characters had their own independent voices and you could easily read who is who when their part popped up.
At first I didn’t particularly like our characters, they felt like carbon copies of their parents. Rude, bad, horrible and more, but as the book goes on you can just see the differences, and you can see the characters develop and change. The change was especially fun to see. I won’t say much more, but I am sure others will also be delighted to see this.
I hated the good guys and their judging. For a couple of good guys they sure had a big attitude towards the evil side. Even if these are the next generation and haven’t done anything wrong. I hate that, people who judge on what your parents have done. Sure, Maleficent is a bitch, but that doesn’t mean Mal will be the same. That doesn’t mean Jay is going to be like his mom. I was just flabbergasted at this, seriously, this is the good side? Even more stuffed with prejudices and stereotypes than the evil side? Wth. No thank you, I will just stick to the evil side.
The ending was a stereotypical ending to this kind of book. I knew what was going to happen from the moment the kids got to the school. Still it was a good, no great, ending and I really loved it. Yay for the kids!
At the end of the book we apparently have some photographs of the movie/series? And it just made me snort so hard. It reminds me of those tv-shows you had back in 90’s, early 00’s (things like The Tribe). The clothes, the hair, the make-up, everything. It is hilarious, we are now in 2015, but apparently nothing changed.
But all in all, I still had fun reading this short book. :)
Eleanor says: I love Descendants! Ever since I saw the first movie, then I watched the second movie, then I watched the third movie. I heard some kids talking about it in class and decided to try and watch it. I loved it. This book is exactly like the movie.
This was certainly amusing, I have to say! I love the idea, and I vaguely remember seeing a snippet of the movie on TV before the place's channel switched, so I can't compare.
But the book is short, sweet (well...sorta sweet *wink*), and something fun for a Saturday afternoon.
Oh my gosh it's over and I'm bummed out. I've (through no fault of my own) developed a highly unhealthy obsession with this world and these characters.
Obviously, this wasn't as well written as the Isle of the Lost, because Melissa De La Cruise didn't write it. But I enjoyed it nonetheless. I wanted to watch the Disney Channel movie as soon as I finished the prequel, but, since I was pretty late on the whole "descendants" train, I haven't been able to find it yet. So I figured why not do the next best thing, read the novelization. Plus all the reviews on amazon and goodreads stated that this was word for word the same experience as the film. Now I have seen and read novels that were made after the movie an they're always this skinny little, flimsy, unimpressive glossy cover book. This wasn't like that. Firstly, it's hardcover. And the pages are beautiful with these dark edges and ah. It's just great. Now, on to the story.
The friendship between the four was still well intact, which I appreciated. There was also this weird nice little bond going on between Jay and Carlos that I was just loving... I kind of ship them in this installment. Is that weird? Eh, I don't care.
Every scene with Mal and Ben had me grinning like an idiot and I just knew since Isle of the Lost when they were dreaming about each other that I was going to love them as a couple, their date, that scene right before his coronation, just ah! They are too cute.
Auradon wasn't as interesting a location as the Isle of the Lost, but it was still fun. There was no development of the characters or as strong of a plot and the details were pretty scarce. But I didn't get this book for some sort of literary masterpiece, I got it, and read it because I needed to know where these characters that I had grown to love were going next, plot wise. And I just needed more of them and the world and that is exactly what I got with this book.
(Thanks mom!)
Oh and p.s. no offense to the girl cast as Evie, but I just felt that all of the castings were spot on (BooBoo Stewart is bae) when I read both books, but found myself picturing Evie as Alex from My Digital Escape again as I did with the first one. Idk, maybe I'll feel different when I see the movie.
On the surface, this book is definitely a poorly novelized adaption of a Disney made-for TV musical. It has flat, undistinguishable characters in a predictable world following a similar plot as High School Musical, only this time with the children of our favorite Disney big screen heroes and villains. I was able to read it in less than two hours, and I struggled to differentiate one character from other.
However, I know that I am not the intended audience for such a book.
This book was read as part of my Kids Lit Book Club, and we received this recommendation strongly from the 7-year-old cousin of my roommate. This is the intended audience. The goal of books such as these is to encourage children to find a passion for reading. While this book isn't a masterpiece by any means, there is a series of book being written with the same characters. Isle of the Lost was written by Melissa de la Cruz and (while I haven't read it) seems to be a fully fleshed out novel. Hopefully this book, The Descendants, can serve as a gateway-drug of sorts to get children reading.
There were some good messages in this book. Or, well, woven into the made-for-TV-musical. The obvious message is that your destiny is not written for you. You can be whomever you want to be, regardless of your past or family. It also lightly touched on how appearances aren't everything, not to judge a book by its cover, and book-smarts can be cool. I was a little disappointed at the continued popularity contest being shown and
Not my cup of tea, but not everything has to be. Whatever we can do to get kids reading in a world more and more run by video games! If you can keep them reading Disney, I support you.

I read this because my daughter loved descendants and I wanted to see what it was all about. Not bad at all, it is very much a kids book but I did enjoy the story and getting to know the different characters. I am totally fine with my daughter reading these books
Truly terrible. No matter how low you set the bar, this book will limbo under it. Even for a movie novelization, it's pretty bad. Even for middle-schooler-written fan fiction, it's pretty bad. No character development, just a blow-by-blow retelling of each detail of each scene in the movie (I must assume - I haven't seen it and now have no desire to do so). The quote that comes to mind is, "What you've just [written] is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever [read]. At no point in your rambling, incoherent [movie novelization] were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having [read] it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."
In the movie novelization we meet the evil villains kids and follow their adventure from their town into the land of the good where all the Prince and princesses kids live and go to school.
So when two opposite groups collide, they clash but still integrate too as they discover love and friendship and find themselves actually having fun, will they go through with their wicked plan?
It is a great story with the characters being led it seems by Mal so we get a strong feel of her leadership and not really the others at all however that being said, the storyline was engaging and made the characters still fit the story as it played out even though the other villains kids seemed to be more background character's.
Mal is the narrator also daughter of maleficent, and she tells us how her mother cursed sleeping beauty and her kingdom all those years ago. And then how king beast finally married belle and became king and queen of Auradon and when he booted all the evil stepmothers, sidekicks, and stepmothers and stepsisters to the isle of the lost. And how her town is the greatest badest isle no Wi-Fi, no magic and no way out for her and her wicked friends
A great short read!!!!!! Loved the creativeness of imagining what would it be like if all the Disney stories we have grown up with also had kids & the moral of the story: good triumphs evil of course!!!!!! :)

This book is actually like the movie ... But if u seen the movie a hundred times like me, there is no used to read the book. My suggestion is you read the book first and then watch the movie. " I Am rotten to the core. "
Growing up I was OBSESSED with the Desendants franchise. Recently I found they have books so thought I would read them because why not. This book is literally the movie. There is no extra content in the book that isn’t in the movie
This is so great the book has everything you ever wanted to know about .it inspires so much people because they think because they are bad they can't turn over a new leaf but this book teaches you that heel inspiring thankyou
I tried... I just... can't. I'm supposed to accept 1) that all Disney villains inhabit the same universe, 2) they all (or many) have kids that didn't exist in their original movies, and 3) all the kids live and hang out together.
I just... no. That's three different ways that this whole premise hurts my brain. One would be hard enough to accept, but three?
I won't leave a star rating, since the writing seems fine. I just can't handle the universe they exist in.
Descendents adapted by Rico Green, is about Evie, Mal, Jay, and Carlos who are the children of Maleficent, Jafar, Cruela Devil, and the Evil Queen. They are all trapped in the Isle of The Lost(For bad people). But, one day, the villians' children were chosen to go to a prep school in Auradon( where the good people live). Maleficent made them go , so they could steel Cinderela's fairy god mother's wand.
This is a novelization of the movie, so it's literally one big spoiler (like the diary and spellbook weren't) so be aware of that if you want to watch the movie. I personally dont mind spoilers. They actually make me more excited for whatever I was spoiled for. So I REALLY liked this book, and I'm super excited for the movie!!!
I loved it because it's a back story on how the VK's came to be. Now yes this is the movie version yet it fits perfectly as a fallow up from the first book. So if my theory is correct reading the next book will pick up between this and the second movie. I'm hoping.
